I had never seen the actor playing Matthew before Difficult People, I think he's terrific.

The character, Matthew, is repugnant, but that's intentional and well-done.

I also love that they're sending up Lola SJW-types. Well, all types, really.

I loved Julie's doting, PBS BF last season, but am concerned they're getting lazy with his character and that they're running his pet-name running joke into the ground.

The show is scathing to those people and trends and pastimes that need to be skewered, and the takedowns are well-deserved and sometimes long overdue.

Other times, it feels as though they're cramming too many words into the mouths of the characters while someone is off-camera cracking a whip to keep things "LouderFasterFunnier"; such must be the pressures of getting episodes finished in time to start on the next one, I guess.

I like what they're up to, and Andrea's character is coming into its own.

Can't say I miss Gabourey, but the guy playing her husband has a certain charm.

John Cho seems less talented than I had thought - I'm surprised, but glad he's game to play Billy's love interest.

The recurring casting director bit is so smart, and eerily accurate, I'm sorry to say.

Andrea Martin as Julie's mom keeps me watching the show. She can do no wrong.

I love his over the top character. I think TV entertainment, at least mine, is all about loving to hate over the top characters. Maybe that's because I grew up with loving Absolutely Fabulous and its leads Eddie Monsoon and Patsy Stone. And I totally agree with r17.

Cole Escola is what Martin Shkreli should have spent his money to look like.

The restaurant staff has made me chuckle a few times, but they are for the most part hugely unnecessary - Gabby Sibide's character, Lola (the trans character), and Matthew. Even the black guy who is Sibide's husband, while not really annoying, doesn't bring anything to the table. That whole location could be cut from the show and it wouldn't make much different.

Matthew is grating, but he doesn't really get a rise out of me.

Every time they cut to a restaurant scene, I groan.

I like Difficult People for the most part; though I don't think it's outstanding. I'll say it again - how the hell are they getting that collection of guest stars? It's not that prestigious or THAT great of a show and it doesn't even have that much history. I'm always impressed at who pops up.

I think he's genuinely funny. The Matthew character is supposed to be grating. I remember first seeing him on some YouTube video making a Bernadette Peters sex tape. I found him amusing then and was surprised to see him turn up on Difficult People.

I need to be inside him quite deeply.

R49 I got intrigued after having seen this thread pop up so many times. So I started watching it two days ago and I can't stop! Gut-bustingly hilarious. The trans truther waitress "12 barrels of olive oil" gag was one of the funniest things I've ever seen on TV. I love how they're making fun of overzealous trans activists, anti-trans gay men, and conspiracy nuts with this single character. So good.

Cole is playing Matthew the way the writers directed him to. He's clearly a mirror character to Billy and also acts as an annoyance buffer so we feel empathy towards Billy. It's brilliant, really, because Billy would get irritating real fast without Matthew there to field the audience's punches instead. And it takes some real balls to run in a crowded place in New York in nothing but briefs that look like nappies.

I bet Ryan Murphy hired Eichner just so they would shut up about AHS already; they get [italic]really[/italic] brutal sometimes. Love all the guest stars and Julie's mom is a joy to watch. The facial expressions she pulls when she's about to sing Send In The Clowns should be studied somewhere.

I tried to watch Amy Sedaris’s show last night. I turned it off while the lady of the woods was gutting a fish. I just couldn’t do it. I love Amy, but she is much better IMO when she is playing off a straight man like David Letterman or Martha Stewart. When she is by herself I feel like I am watching a crazy person wandering around her kitchen.

I enjoyed the crazy queen’s little skits people posted here. He’s got some wacky characters inside of him.
