It was more about drug addiction than sex. The best part was the trailer for CMBYN.

I just saw it tonight. It was a character driven movie, and it's main subject was this kid in turmoil. Beautiful images and the lead actor was surprisingly great and hot as balls. It didn't have a definite conclusion. I think the director is telling us to figure out ourselves.
R2 the main actor is homely? You need to have your eyes checked.
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 18, 2017 6:05 AM |
The lead character was so gorgeous, it made you wonder why he was hanging out with such a bunch of uglies.

R3, there's explicit gay sex, dumbass. STFU and stop posting if you don't know what you're talking about (or how to spell). I agree that the ending was very abrupt. I felt like the smallest of his "friends" might have been closeted also.

I saw it. I know the technology changes quickly, but why wasn't he using Grindr or Adam4Adam to meet guys? The whole idea that there was this website called Brooklyn Boys was hard to buy. If anything, it would have been called New York City Boys, with click points for each borough, sort of like Adam4Adam.
The ending was bleak. He just about gets the chance to connect with someone closer to his age range, it goes wrong, and he is left alone in his isolation.
The movie sure made Sheepshead Bay look dreamy, like some sort of destination.

I noticed that too, but my partner pointed out afterward that the girlfriend had a cellphone and was taking selfies. We decided that they were too poor to have cellphones, from what we could see, none of them had a job.
Presumably they're all 21, how else could they have gotten on to a booze cruise, so you'd think they'd at least have jobs as stock clerks at the Shop-Rite.
I thought it was odd that the father was dying of cancer yet both the mother and the son both smoke. Then I got to work today and my co-worker told me his father in law is in the final stages of lung cancer and is being moved to hospice, right before he went out for a cigarette, so maybe that part isn't so odd after all.

R25 Frankie (the lead actor) was taking selfies in the mirror with his cell phone.
I'm thinking of the movie as akin to a fable. The emotional core was true, but the little details were intentionally off.

Some good insight here, and a few well aimed barbs, but the movie is still an enigma wrapped in a metaphor. Even the articles and reviews don't lend any greater clarity. I guess I need to see it again. Maybe when it gets to Amazon.

I just saw it tonight. First sex scene, where he gets fucked, is unrealistic, no preparation or anything.
The second one, at the motel was very relaxed and realistic and reminded me of different encounters ive had just like it.
In the third one, after the disaster on the boat, where he needed to get a cock in his mouth, was also extremely true to life.

R9 is being pedantic R19, but is also 100% correct about the definition of acronym. Sorry!
The movie was only okay but was definitely interesting. I think there's an some discussion to be had about whether it was homophobic, as R32 suggests. I don't think I really agree but I get it.
The idea that there was a gay hookup WEBsite specifically for far outer borough weirdos was very silly but sort of worked within of the hazy, dreamlike world of the film.
The star is unbearably hot and you got to see some of his dick, so who cares about the rest of it?

This movie was a believable portrayal of a young working class guy with no father in his life coming to terms with his attraction to older men. Along the way he encounters many pitfalls, some of his own making and some not. It was as much a portrait of his social milieu as it was a portrait of the young man. No. it doesn't resolve into one pat life lesson. It's a bit like real life that way.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | November 21, 2017 11:50 AM |
I found it slow and boring. I ended up skipping through chunks of it. By the time I got to the disappointing ending, I didn't care what happened to him anyway.
Still, the lead looked so much like a young woman I used to date years ago that they could have been twins. I always liked those pretty boi types!

Harris Dickerson and Beach Rats got Spirit Award nominations. God’s Country got nothing. I haven’t seen it yet don’t think it is as brave as BR but it is nice it has a happy ending which is the main reason everyone loves Maurice.
BTW Harris is in the Danny Boyle FX series and plays John Getty the third.

Yeah the whole brooklyn boys website to meet guys seemed so weird, as if it wouldn't just be a phone app. The lack of smartphones in general just made this movie feel odd when it wasn't supposed to take place in the past.
The end is pretty unsatisfactory, there is no character arc, he ends up in the same position he was at the start.
I will say I am happy to see Harris Dickinson got remembered come award season. He really does a commendable job with this role, the movie would have been a slog in the hands of a lesser actor. And props to him for showing his penis, but of course it takes a brit and not an American to be comfortable with the nudity of the role.

Well, actually -
[quote] Acronym: 1. a word formed from the initial letters or groups of letters of words in a set phrase or series of words and pronounced as a separate word, as Wac from Women's Army Corps, OPEC from Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries, or loran from long-range navigation. 2. a set of initials representing a name, organization, or the like, with each letter pronounced separately; an initialism.
So, technically, ACLU is an acronym even though everyone would say A-C-L-U, rather than saying ak-lu or some such.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | November 30, 2017 2:15 PM |
I always found the more inclusive definition of "acronym" to be acceptable. But there's some queen who shrieks constantly if you call an initialism an acronym. He is probably the "jealous, not envious" queen as well.

Of course there were homophobic characters - that's not what made the film homophobic. The entire representation of anything gay being dark and dangerous and foreboding - just cast everything gay as negative, destructive, twisted, violent, etc. And yes, there is definitely a dark underbelly to aspects to any lifestyle, but we felt this film went for every easy, gay negative stereotype - even down to the pedantic, obvious 'daddy' issues. Gay, to this woman filmmaker, was nothing more than something to be dreaded and feared. We left the theatre (yes, saw it on the big screen) feeling like it was all something to be frightened and ashamed of.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | December 5, 2017 4:20 AM |
The scene was left to your imagination but the mother was going to accept his gayness The very nice gay guy wasn’t beat up because he was gay it was because of drugs. Harris Dickinson goes fully naked in several scenes, including this one where you get a nice glimpse at his dick from another angle.
Either you believe that for some reason they stopped the scene to put on a prothesthic for this blink and you miss it moment. Or the obvious explanation, he was doing the sex scene while nude and got an erection.
[quote]The actor must be gay if he had an erection.
Wouldn't say that. How many non-gay guys get erections in gay porn everyday?
I mean it is just like actors getting themselves to cry during a scene, you are supposed to be believe the emotions you are feeling. Personally not going to say he is a gay closet case just because he was feeling the moment. Though maybe while making the movie he came to appreciate he isn't as straight as he might have assumed.
Anyway, we can all agree it is hot. And that his costar was a lucky guy.

What am I missing? I didn't see an erection: I saw a guy's arm.

Delusional 'Beach rats' fans see visions everywhere. One of them saw the Virgin Mary's pudenda on a cheese dog.

by Anonymous | reply 119 | December 10, 2017 10:58 PM |
I just watched it and was not impressed. It is filmed like a Britney Spears' video/after school special. Enough with the close ups already. Bad acting and cliché everything. It is void of emotion and "who cares."
The film should have focused on the sister and her boyfriend. They had the better story and were better actors.
by Anonymous | reply 120 | December 11, 2017 5:28 PM |
You are definitely in the minority in thinking Harris Dickinson is a poor actor r120, I've been impressed that even many independent film awards organizations have been acknowledging his performance.

We take peen very seriously around here. Though the person who can't see it I don't know how to help, I guess if they actually watched the scene it would help them place where to look.

Grew up in a very similar outerboro neighborhood - my sister still lives there - my nephews are roughly the same age as the protagonist - trust me homophobia is still alive and well out there amongst many of the 20 somethings. The girls line about 2 girls kissing is OK is also pretty spot on.
I also thought the dad was dying of 9/11 related cancer - I don’t think it is explicitly stated, but here in NYC that’s just what you assume - there were lots of small details about the neighborhood & characters that are true to life if you know a place like that - obviously the filmmaker could have chosen to be clearer for non NYC viewers, but presenting & not explaining is clearly her artistic choice - the film often does seem more like a documentary - and it is one of the things I really liked about it
It’s not a perfect film - saw it with an ex - (who is half my age so we had no problem believing his attraction to older guys) and we both liked it but felt overall it didn’t quite work.
Saw it in the theater - want to watch it again because the lead does an excellent job & is hot as hell, and it has lots of specifics I can relate to personally coming from that world - a world that has changed less in the last 30 years than you wish it had.

His first hook-up scene felt unrealistic though. He bottomed just like that? Did he douched? pre-lubed ? lol.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | December 12, 2017 12:19 PM |
Yes, that anal scene seemed unrealistic to me. It takes some work to get up into a dry hole, especially while standing.

The main character is such a loser, isn't he? The poor gay dude who gets beaten up gets into that situation not because of the lead character's cowardice--though that does play a big part--but because of his utter stupidity and his complete unwillingness to do anything to extricate himself from the quagmire in which he finds himself. Will he eventually come out? Judging by everything we see of him in the film, probably not.

I cannot believe this movie gets 82% rating on RT. It should be 75% at best.

More like 28%.

Not interested in films about gay men directed by fish.
by Anonymous | reply 130 | December 17, 2017 8:40 PM |
I think it’s a really good film, but hated the scene where the handsome guy gets gay bashed. That was a very upsetting scene.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | December 18, 2017 12:51 AM |
The director didn't seem to have much interest at all in the subject. In fact, the only two scenes where she did seem to suddenly come alive and actually show some interest in what she was filming were the scenes when they were taking selfies and the scene where they were blowing smoke rings towards each other. Both intensely boring, but at least filmed with some devotion to the subject.

I was surprised to see the blu-ray on the shelves at Best Buy. I picked it up with a couple of other films. The guy at the checkout seemed rather curious about the film and kept looking over the cover.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | March 6, 2018 2:28 PM |
The main guy was scorching hot. Like the type of hot you talk about for a while and re-evaluate what is and isn't hot. That being said, the closet kills and apparently can get you robbed !! Eek!
by Anonymous | reply 136 | March 6, 2018 2:43 PM |
Are these boys all supposed to be Irish-American?
This film is streaming free on Hulu.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | March 6, 2018 3:16 PM |
This film was supposed to be a lot more popular but surprisingly it went nowhere.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | March 6, 2018 3:56 PM |
Was it r138?
It is a low budget gay film starring an unknown director with an unknown cast.
Harris Dickinson was able to score nominations off of it at the Gotham awards and Independent Spirit awards, so it was hardly ignored.
by Anonymous | reply 139 | March 6, 2018 3:59 PM |
R138 It's not something that was shown at any theaters. The fact that the movie showed up at Best Buy is a start. The cover art makes it look like a gay porn film.
by Anonymous | reply 140 | March 6, 2018 4:01 PM |
Also, Universal was the studio that released this.
by Anonymous | reply 141 | March 6, 2018 4:03 PM |
Ha, the description is hilariously desperate "A film of erotic heat"
No one who has actually seen "Beach Rats" would describe it that. It wasn't some erotic romp at all.
But they knew the easiest way to get gay men to check out a movie.
by Anonymous | reply 142 | March 6, 2018 4:04 PM |
It's probably the only bad gay movie released from last year.
Beach Rats almost looked trash especially if compared to GOC, CMBYN, BPM, Handsome Devil, Tom of Finland and Something Like Summer..
by Anonymous | reply 143 | March 6, 2018 4:20 PM |
I found it pretty hot, and as far as it being an erotic romp, I wouldn't want it to be.
by Anonymous | reply 144 | March 6, 2018 4:21 PM |
I was hoping to see all four guys naked together. There was a moment in the film where this almost happened.

by Anonymous | reply 147 | March 8, 2018 5:00 PM |
Bits of it reminded me of Shelter (quiet guy growing up confused, in a bad family situation). Except the adorable lead character hangs with the wrong crowd, and then bad things ensue A slice of crappy life, with no beginning or end.

Outside the bubble of what exactly, film? There are lots of movies released that are completely ignored, this one wasn't, peers recognized it.

I could have sworn that “Beach Rats” was streaming on Hulu Plus.

I didn’t care for that scene, and it’s not clear what happened to the guy. It sad that the lead character didn’t end up with that cute guy.

The guy obviously wasn't killed. I don't know where some people got that. He was "just" roughed up.

I had to rewatch that scene for the erect dick. Thanks, guys!
It was a nice bonus.
I thought the only (partial) dick scene was when he was trimming his pubes.

Someone should've asked Harris Dickinson about popping a boner in the sex scene, curious what he would've said about it.

From a 2017 interview:
Q: So, let’s talk about Beach Rats. We meet your character in this strange and suspended moment where he’s exploring the world around him, and the suppressed parts of his personality. Were you at all similar when you were growing up?
A: I was a bit, but I don’t think I was always so aware of myself, or what I wanted to do in life. Through acting, I discovered a new confidence and came to terms with who I was. [Frankie and I] are very different though: I’ve always allowed myself to explore my own desires, and had a nice support system. Bad things have happened in my life, but I still feel quite fortunate.
As I read it, he's talking about being gay.

It doesn't matter what else happened after the end of the film.
The point is that the main guy was party to a killing because he wouldn't live out-of-the-closet or dump his thug friends.

The main character wasn't specifically attracted to older men. He explains at one point that he seeks them out because they are unlikely to know his friends.
The one guy wasn't gay bashed; he was roughed up because they wanted his drugs. Also, he survived. The reason the main character couldn't get on the pick-up site later was because his account had been pulled, meaning he had been reported by his victim.

Just watched this fabulous movie last night on Amazon. First thing I noticed was that it was shot on film. So many movies are digital now and look way too clean, not film-like, and very disappointing. This was shot on 16mm and I LOVED the visible grain. Beautiful.
I can’t believe the reactions to it on here. The movie is great, though the ending is a bit disappointing (That’s it?!). Bizarre that anyone would think it was homophobic: it’s a portrayal of real life. White trash kids in south Brooklyn aren’t as open and accepting as everyone imagines ALL YOUNG PEOPLE to be nowadays. Talk about living in a bubble. And I thought it was so true to life as a closeted gay guy (which I was), I was actually surprised it was written and directed by a woman. Hookup culture as experienced by a closeted young man who’s just starting to explore man sex looks almost exactly like it did in this film. I loved every minute of it, and it didn’t feel dark, or shameful, or depressing.
Anyway, Harris Dickinson has an Instagram, and he has a bunch of pictures with a young blond beauty whom I assume is his girlfriend. I hope he’s bi. His boner in Beach Rats was a delight. (Also can’t believe how many of you blind fuckers didn’t notice his dick is visible on like six occasions—Jesus Christ.)

Hadn't had a good laugh in a while. The war of R105 - R115 or so is hilarious.... the movie is alright. Just saw it on Hulu. The mother thought they were gonna have an orgy in the basement when she kicked them out. That or she thought they robbed her jewelry. That was a good looking fellow the guys roughed up for 20 bucks of weed. The film seems to take place in 2006 or something.
