I hated, hated hated his song Grace Kelly and his whole routine at the time, so I turned off and ignored him. But someone gave me Sinfonia Pop as a gift not long ago. I really liked the cover and though he really grew very handsome. Gave it a go and totally sold on him. His songs on Origin of Love and No Place in Heaven are actually good, he speaks 4 languages fluently and he models for Valentino.
I actually really loved some of his songs on his last album. He finally calls out his leech of a mother who forced him to beard for all those years. She probably doesn't even listen to his songs; it's money and fame that she craves.
I agree that he's more honest and less "performative" now. I don't think his fans like this version that much, though. They would prefer he always acted like a cartoonish asexual Peter Pan. So I can't really blame him for going with that schtick so long.

WHO?
and, WHY?
by Anonymous | reply 4 | September 13, 2017 12:48 PM |
R3 Don't be nasty now, he's a nice role model for young gay men. And both of those things severely up [italic]any[/italic] man's attractiveness factor, why is why I presume the OP mentioned it.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | September 13, 2017 12:48 PM |
R4 He never really managed to crack the US, did he? He was huge here in Europe and also in Asia a few years ago. I guess the Lebanese background didn't help.
Not to be confused with similar-sounding, similar-looking and similar-named Mikky Ekko, who came to the scene quite a bit later.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | September 13, 2017 1:01 PM |
I like Mika, unlike you was a big fan of his break out single "Grace Kelley". But yes, even though that song was huge in the UK it didn't make a big wave in America.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 13, 2017 1:31 PM |
I like him a lot. Bought his first two albums and loved Grace Kelly.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | September 13, 2017 1:35 PM |
Honouring the past gay role models.
It's stuff like this that's probably completely lost on his (remaining) straight fans.

a cool video, not a great song
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 13, 2017 2:03 PM |
I only remember one of his songs. The one with the lyrics: "Teenage dreams in a teenage circus, running around like a clown on purpose. Who gives a damn about the family you come from, you'll give it up when you're young and you want some"
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 13, 2017 2:07 PM |
R14 Damn, that takes on a [italic]whole[/italic] different meaning when typed out like that... So naughty.
It's from this song.

by Anonymous | reply 16 | September 13, 2017 3:14 PM |
A song about inevitably falling for the straight guy.
I want him to explore these themes further in his next album but I don't think he will as there just isn't an audience large enough for it.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 13, 2017 3:18 PM |
He's attractive, successful, and an out and proud gay man.
You won't find any of his fans on Datalounge.

by Anonymous | reply 22 | September 13, 2017 3:50 PM |
Agree that Popular is a really good song, with a catchy sampling of the 'Wicked' song. And it is a great 'revenge' video with an ironic ending. Ariana held a grudge for a looooooong time.

R20 Perhaps try including some actual arguments in your post next time and add an emoji to convey your emotional state instead? Just a suggestion.
Unless you're Mika himself. Then you're excused.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | September 13, 2017 4:37 PM |
No Place In Heaven deals with gay themes really well. He doesn't shy away from them yet doesn't over do it in an outrageous way that sometimes other gay artist can do.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | September 13, 2017 5:23 PM |
He came across to me as an asshole arrogant twink when he was young and "Grace Kelly" came out. Maybe he's grown up more now (he certainly is much more attractive), but I'd like to see him distance himself more from who he was when he was such a dick.

Early interviews painted him as precocious. He's earned respect with his arrangements. I'm just glad he didn't burn out. He's one of several younger artists I'm pulling for - it's a good talent pool if they don't fuck it up.

He came out as gay around the time of Origin of Love. I think he came out as Bisexual because his mother had issues with him being gay. Her wrote the song @ r7 about it.
If your mother is like mine
All that she wants are the stars and the moon
A son with a wife and a big living room
All she wants
Is another little special arrangement
A peculiar engagement
Got the trophy wife, that's respectable
To avoid any spectacle
It's another simple solution
For my mother's delusion
Get her some adorable pictures done
For her mother in Lebanon

by Anonymous | reply 43 | September 25, 2017 5:32 PM |
R30 Yeah, he only used bisexuality to ease his fans in for a while.
R42 No idea. There's a lot for him to choose from in the combined Italian and French market. I assume he's had his fair share of British cock as well. As for South Korea... well, you know what they're like over there.
Totally unrelated, but I still remember the day I opened the BBC news website and read the shocking news about his sister slipping from the window and getting impaled on the railings below when she was alone with Mika. The medical helicopter and the doctors actually managed to save her. Horrible stuff of nightmares that I wouldn't wish on Putin or even Trump.

Well, let's not exaggerate for the sake of making a point. He was declared a breakthrough act by the BBC's Sound of 2007, which was a decade ago. So unless you're a teenager, that's not exactly "many, many years ago". More like five to seven years ago.

by Anonymous | reply 61 | February 19, 2018 7:17 PM |
He has a new album out this year, in an interview I think his manager said something along the lines that while he'd like to make an impact on the UK and US market, his music is successful enough in various territories around the world, that he can make his label a significant profit to keep him signed and working.
by Anonymous | reply 62 | February 20, 2018 12:23 PM |
I remember seeing him, it had to be early November 2016 in London at Union Chapel, which is a smallish gothic church that also functions as a live music venue. It was an all acoustic show in aid of the mental health charity Mencap. He opened, playing about 4 songs on piano, His performance seemed a real display of virtuosity, especially when he performed Grace Kelly (whether you liked it or not). Natasha Khan, aka Bat For Lashes, followed. Amy Winehouse headlined; Back To Black had only been released for about a week and she sang half of it acoustically as well as songs from Frank. For an encore she did two Donny Hathaway covers.

[quote]His variety show, [italic]Stasera Casa Mika[/italic], draws three million households each episode. Last month, it even won a prize at Europe’s most prestigious TV awards ceremony: the Palm D’or International Television Award for Best Entertainment Program.
It's weird that I'm European myself and I also treat singers who haven't cracked the US market as basically dead.
by Anonymous | reply 68 | February 21, 2018 5:53 PM |
He never clicked in the United States because of his falsetto (which he overuses) and his sexual ambiguity. It might be predictable that that was the case: Freddie Mercury is much, much bigger in the UK and the rest of Europe than he is in the US; same with Jake Shears (who does not use falsetto that much, but who does occasionally) of Scissor Sisters.
I never cared for either Mika's looks (too skinny and hardfaced) or his very evident arrogance. Jake Shears may be a starfucker, but he always looks at least like he's having a good time and seems slightly surprised to be famous. Mike always looks like he feels he deserves his fame and more.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | February 21, 2018 5:59 PM |
Receiving the keys to the City of Florence just last month.
This is all so bizarre; like he's been having incredible adventures in some alternate world. But it's not the US so no one gives a shit. Myself included.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | February 21, 2018 5:59 PM |
The arrogance thing seemed more about try to hide his sexuality, he is brilliant on the Voice France, so charismatic.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | February 21, 2018 6:09 PM |
Yeah, I also think the aloofness was just him trying to create a distance between his public persona and his personal life back when he was still closeted. A defence mechanism of sorts.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | February 21, 2018 6:14 PM |
If you're not a success in pop/rock in the US, Americans will simply not take your success elsewhere seriously, no matter how big you are overseas.
Like it or not, this has always been the case.

He released a special edition of No Place in Heaven with a live performance with an orchestra. The rendition of "Happy Ending" is so stirring. My favourite album track of his is "Any Other World".

"In a September 2009 interview in Gay & Night Mika commented on his sexuality: "I've never ever labelled myself. But having said that; I've never limited my life, I've never limited who I sleep with... Call me whatever you want. Call me bisexual, if you need a term for me..."[23] Later he stated in an interview with This Is London: "I consider myself label-less because I could fall in love with anybody – literally – any type, any body. I'm not picky."[24] In an August 2012 interview with the magazine Instinct, the singer described himself as gay.[25]"
How tiresome.
