Anyone else love this movie? Great performance by Theron and the dialogue is so cynical & witty.
Theron was terrific, but IMHO the script was self-indulgent and the dramatic climax ridiculous.
But Theron really was good, she almost made it worth two hours of my life.

I love it too.

Sorry but not only is Charlize plain? She's actually ugly.

One of my favorite movies. We all know someone who never really grew up and behaves similarly. Funny, but in a sad way.

Agree R3
And she's very overrated as an actress too.

I think I saw it. It was super boring. Pretty sure I had an out-of-body experience there.

Couldn't finish it

It was true to life.
The way the character's apartment is decorated is spot on. The bathroom overloaded with products was particular apt.

R4 here, I also got the impression that she's a bit like Mavis. You could see her behaving in a similar fashion and being just as clueless about people's reaction. Her son dressing in full girl gear is a case in point.

I love the bag jumping on the counter when she checks into the hotel.
"There's an extra fee for dogs".
"I don't have a dog".

Oh yes, that bit was funny R10. Very forgettable movie otherwise, I literally don't remember it. I don't even remember who's in it. Who plays the wife? Maggie G?

I don't think the Elders get it

Another gem from the mind of Brook "Diablo Cody" Busey to enrich our shared human experience!

i liked that it was so dark and hopeless, without a real resolution. that was quite brave for these shitty times for movies. I also had the impression that Theron was playing herself, that's why she was so good. I hate Patton Oswald, he almost ruined it for me.

One of my favorites of recent years. Charlize Theron was terrific.

I thought he was good in this. I'd never seen in in anything else.
Who else spent a lot of time worrying about the dog?

This is one of my favorite movies and I think Theron was robbed of an Oscar nomination that year. (I mean, Rooney Mara in The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo?) I read an article around the time that it came out and she said that she really identified with the character of Mavis so some of you might be right on that.
I pulled a Mavis the other month and signed a couple of my own books in a bookstore.

I've said before that a lot of the best actors aren't stunning beauties, but are able to look plain or beautiful depending on the needs of the role. Charlize is known as a beauty but she actually fits into this category, without makeup she's as plain as a mud puddle.
I didn't love the film as a whole but I thought she gave a terrific performance, and one of the most interesting things about it was her deglamorizing and... reglamorizing. She played a shlep of a woman who didn't normally give a rat's ass how she looked, but who knows how to look stunning when she's willing to make the effort. Most actresses want us to believe that tthey're beautiful 24/7, but Theron showed us the process.

I also appreciated that Theron didn't do anything to make the character more endearing or likable than she should be. She committed to the character, and there was no redemption or growth at the end. I knew she was lost when, in a rare moment of self-awareness, she suggested to her parents that she might have a drinking problem, and they shrugged it off.

I think this one is on its way to becoming a cult classic. It was HUGE flop at the time. Then again, they opened it around Christmas.
I thought Theron's performance in this was even braver than the one in Monster, because there was no facade to hide behind. Mavis looked like Charlize and she was a total monster. She didn't try to make her sympathetic or grow or learn a moral at the end. I appreciated that, because in real life, people like that don't change. They really don't.
It's a brave, fascinating movie all around and Cody's best work for sure.

in a super small role as her former BF's mom there's Mary Beth Hurt from Interiors!

I thought it was a very on point character study. It was underrated and Patton Oswald who I never liked was very good in it.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | September 6, 2017 10:46 PM |
yes, and a very tricky role for Patton. He rose to the challenge very well.

R3 You must be trolling. Only on DL she is considered "ugly" and "plain."
by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 6, 2017 11:18 PM |
About to add my commentary, but couldn't articulate it better than R22. Total agreement. Charlize's greatest performance, braver than Monster. She played a monster without the makeup. And Diablo's best screenplay.

Agree with R3 without make up she's ugly especially considering botox and work she has done on her face (chin, cheeks, nose)

R28 TROLL

I like the portrayal of the gaudiness of modern life.
The plastic fast-food joints, fast cheap fashion, urban sprawl and blandness.

I loved it, her drinking diet coke non stop would have her weighing 300 lbs though.

I liked her beat up red Mini Cooper.
before she really beat it up >>

She recently filmed Tully with the same team. Diablo Cody wrote the screenplay and Jason Reitman directed.

A better movie and a better performance than in "Monster".

It was an interesting movie. She's always a reliable actress. I like her.

Charlize Theron, 44, admits it’s “heartbreaking” that her role will be taken over by a twentysomething actress in the next Mad Max film.

Loved Charlize T and Patton Oswalt in this. I don't get Patrick Wilson. He was supposed to be the studly buck in Little Children, also. He must be an acquired taste.

I liked everything about it.

R37 she really does hate Tom.
R39 I think Patrick's a good actor and fit the role. But I don't personally get all the fuss over him.
