The Southern Poverty Scam
Attention Clueless SPLC donors: You may think you are donating money for “poverty law,” but did you know that the SPLC is sitting on assets of at least $328 million, and has been stashing millions in offshore bank accounts in the Caymen Islands? And you thought your money was helping “the poor.” Suckerrrrrrrrrssss.
And did you know that, according to the SPLC’s 2015 IRS 990 form it took in $50 million in donations, but only spent about $61,000 (0.12%) on lawsuits, some of which were probably defending itself from defamation suits? So with $328 million in assets, it spent .019% of that on “poverty law.” Suckerrrrrrrssss.

I used to contribute but was troubled by the same issues and stopped years ago. These new reports are very upsetting since I believe in the mission they purportedly were focused on.

Who controls the Cayman accounts? How much is in them?
When all news becomes a screamfest, with knee-jerk defenders, human slime like Dees can operate with impunity. And no, it's not limited to the left, although I wonder what an expose on HRC would uncover? Another co-opted organization that is no friend to the people it purports to fight for. I'd add NCLR to same list.

You can't dispute their OWN tax filings. Name calling is the last resort of those with no argument to make. I gave them $ for years, and seeing how it was used, regret every cent. These people are hucksters no better than a Jim Baker or Bernie Madoff.

Nope, R20, look at their own, publically available, tax filings.
The knee jerk screeching defense is what has allowed Dees to profit so richly and possibly illegally. Find me names of other US "non-profits" who have stashed millions offshore. We will wait.

I regard the SPLC on a par with the conservative "think tanks" that relentlessly spew out right wing cant while hiding behind PACs using the guise of high sounding names that belie their true intent.
SPLC is the antidote to the highly organized Republican claptrap machine.
If the SPLC has offshore accounts to house their donation, who is to say the Heritage Foundation doesn't too?
Fuck you, OP.

Cayman accounts are completely legal, assuming all is reported to the IRS.
There was a bunch of controversy when it was found out that many NYC hospital systems had accounts in the Caymans, but it was all legal.

Since their tax filings are public, it isn't hard to prove that SPLC stands virtually alone when it comes to any "charity" of similar size using this kind of shady financial policies that do nothing to further their purported cause.

Although I do not consider the source to be very credible on many issues, they have used their considerable resources to flesh out the original story.
This is a big scam and growing scandal.
[quote]The Southern Poverty Law Center invests almost 20 percent of its nearly $320 million endowment fund in offshore equities and other investments. The 2016 annual report of the Alabama-based civil rights organization reports $69,093,576 of "non-U.S. equity funds" among the assets comprising the total endowment fund of $319,283,961, a fund the SPLC describes as a "plan for the day when nonprofits like the SPLC can no longer afford to solicit support through the mail because of rising postage and printing costs." (Given that 2016 contributions topped $45 million, that day has not yet arrived.)

I believe the SPLC is scamming millions from undereducated people by using questionable tactics. I think it is unjustifiable for ANYONE to defraud people by claiming to represent the poor in court when less than 0.66% of their expenditures were for legal representation.

Since the passage of the Global Anti-Semitism Review Act in 2004, the US Department of State is required to monitor anti-semitism world wide. The State Department is not required to monitor anti-Americanism or sentiments against Christians, Muslims or Arabs. Thus, the act created a specially protected class worthy of careful monitoring by the US Department of State of negative sentiments expressed against Jews.
In order to monitor anti-semitism, the term must be defined. The definition is subjective and will be widely, rather than narrowly, interpreted. The State Department has come up with its attempt. The State Department's approach could include any truthful statements about Israel and its behavior toward the Palestinians that the Israeli government or AIPAC or the Anti-Defamation League would deny or contest.
Anti-semitic speech can be interpreted as inciting hatred. Inciting hatred can be interpreted to be a violent act.
"Excessive" criticism of Israel is a subjective, undefinable concept that can be used to determine anti-semitic speech. It is easy to conflate "excessive" with "strong." Thus, demands that Israel be held accountable for war crimes committed in Gaza, the West Bank, Lebanon, or elsewhere become acts of the hate crime of anti-semitism. -- Paul Craig Roberts

from r47:
[quote]Morris Dees is a con man and fraud, as I and others, such as U.S. Circuit Judge Cecil Poole, have observed and as has been documented by John Egerton, Harper’s, the Montgomery Advertiser in its “Charity of Riches” series, and others.
[quote]The positive contributions Dees has made to justice–most undertaken based upon calculations as to their publicity and fund raising potential–are far overshadowed by what Harper’s described as his “flagrantly misleading” solicitations for money. He has raised millions upon millions of dollars with various schemes, never mentioning that he does not need the money because he has $175 million and two “poverty palace” buildings in Montgomery. He has taken advantage of naive, well-meaning people–some of moderate or low incomes–who believe his pitches and give to his $175-million operation. He has spent most of what they have sent him to raise still more millions, pay high salaries, and promote himself. Because he spends so much on fund raising, his operation spends $30 million a year to accomplish less than what many other organizations accomplish on shoestring budgets.
