They talk like men. No flowery speeches or pretty vernacular or lilt in their voices. Very monotone too.

Gillian Anderson has it in her American accent. I don't know what is going on with her British accent.

Queen Latifah definitely has the bassy and no-nonsense voice most lesbians have, and what R6 makes reference to.

Oddly enough, Whoopi has it, too.

My bff LOVED studs, butches, etc. i noticed that many of them talked in a low register as some blacks do. I've also noticed and my friend pointed this out that many Lesbians are a bit rough the edges. The butches she dated typically had male energy (and underwear). I found them kind of hot.

The voice has very flat emotional tones. Straight women and gay men are far more expressive.

The real question is - do lesbians hate "lez voice" as much as gay men seem to hate "gay voice"?

Nancy Kulp had the very best kind of lesbian accent. I once had a work colleague (lesbian of course) with about the same accent whom I could have listened to for hours.

Probably not. Masculinity in women is not despised or ridiculed like femininity in men; it is mostly ignored. Masculine behavior is not generally "corrected" in young girls.

Miss Barbara Stanwyck sounded like this, even when she was young (BEFORE the Constance Colby dentures). So does Jada Pinkett Smith.

Kate McKinnon has a weird accent and she sounds like an old lady.

On L Chat it certainly looks like butch dykes are looked down upon by much of the lesbian community. But it's the only place I see lesbians being like that. Obviously, this has to do with the anonymity of the place, but it's interesting how lesbians play down their biases in public, when they know they're being watched by outsiders and can be held to account for what they do. I sort of wish gay men could do that; it seems all we do is wash our dirty laundry in public.

Straight men are mostly idiots with absolutely no gaydar, and they rarely understand their aversion to things like "lesbian voice." But as long as it works on their subconscious and keeps them away...

No, it is not about "deliberately putting bass in once voice" but sounding normal instead of an artificially pitched high (i.e. baby voice, upspeak, Japanese high pitch etc) - that is the artificial voice

R11 I don't think so because gay men in general dislike the feminity in men, but lesbians like masculinity in women. A butch or a stud is considered to be very hot.

R24 Might be a certain masculine energy some lez women have. Dunno, I'm a bi woman, not butch but something like a tomboy, I don't have the lez voice, I'm conventionally attractive, and yet the majority of men who seem to be into me after having talked to me are bisexual. They seem to enjoy that energy whereas straight men don't.

What about when lesbian voice overlaps with straight Gen X woman voice?

My niece is a lesbian, has pictures of herself hanging on her butch girlfriend on Facebook but my Mom think that is just a friend. Women can hang on each other or go out to dinner, etc. and nobody bats an eye like they would with 2 men.

I know this is a whole other subject but anywhoo....
