I know I'm late just discovering Kylie ( I'm young, ish) but I've been catching up with her on youtube and find her nothing short of ABSOLUTELY FABULOUS, though very similar to Lady Gagy. I wonder if they share an influence.
"I wonder if they share an influence."
Madonna.

Kylie began as a soap opera star, people tend to forget that. Her music career originated as an extension of her popular coupling with Jason Donovan.

Not nearly as freaky/dark/pompous/wannabe artistic as Gaga. She was just pure fun.

Um, who??? and, NO!

Katy Perry is a closer match to Kylie than Lady Gaga. Pure, manufactured pop.

My favorite performance, OP - Kylie comes out on a giant CD.

No, Kylie wasn't the original Gaga. For a pop singer, Gaga is way edgier and experimental than Kylie has ever been. However, I do think that many American pop singers have freely "borrowed" from Kylie through the years, since US audiences are largely unfamiliar with her, and wouldn't recognize the similarities.
I've seen Kylie live twice in NYC. She puts on a good show -- with virtually no lip synching!

r9, Gaga was completely manufactured by her little army of gay stylists. All of the gays who created her image and thought up her stunts were Kylie fans. So r12 is correct.

Kylie did it first, and better! IMO
Though gaga ripped off many artists, most blatantly Madonna.
She's reductive :-)

Kylie is much more feminine and prettier.

From R13 on: as much as I like Kylie, how can you know that her images and looks weren't culled/copied from something from the past? For example the profile pic of Kylie all in white looks very Josephine Baker imo.
For another example this is how Herb Ritts used to collaborate with Madonna: they'd go through his extensive collection of books from the master photographers, and when they both saw something that inspired them, meaning a pose or an image they could imitate, they'd go 'let's do that!"

Is she the one who fucked over the poor nuns or is that the the other one?
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 18, 2018 1:13 AM |
You're thinking of Katy Perry, r23. She's the one who bankrupted and killed the old nuns.

Kylie was picked off a popular soap opera (Australian - but hugely popular in the UK) by the Stock Aitken Waterman production team that was incredibly successful in the second half of the 80s. She was originally sold as the sweet girl next door little sister type, nothing like Gaga. She eventually became "sexier" but was never really as avant-garde as Gaga was marketed to be and Kylie's public persona has always been the down to earth Melbourne girl. This documentary tells the SAW story, with Kylie's bit starting around the 25:00 mark.
