Sharon is and was gorgeous but I'd say that Grace Kelly was in a different category. Sharon is the beautiful dream girl next door while Grace was an untouchable angel.

Sharon's grandmother used to live close to me. Sharon would fly into our little airport when she came to visit her grandmother. I live in a town of less than 10,000. I have never seen more than 10 people in this airport at one time. Most times there are 3-5 people in the airport. when the plane Sharon was on landed a car had to pick her up from the tarmac because she didn't want to be mobbed in the airport. by all 4 or 5 people.

Tim Allen used to come here at Christmas because his wife is from here. They would go the Christmas Eve mass and leave early so he wouldn't be mobbed either. I never heard that anyone fought to be able next to them in church.

Say what you will about Sharon but she was amazing in Basic Instinct. Sexy, funny, icy, bitchy, confident, dangerous. I love everything about her performance and that is an awesome screen test. You can even tell Verhoeven is bewitched by her. She owned that movie. Elizabeth Berkley probably thought Showgirls was going to give her the same stardom Basic Instinct gave Stone, but Berkley took the role too seriously, whereas Stone had a lot of fun in the role.

I'm a little surprised Stone had to audition for Verhoeven considering they had just worked together on Total Recall but it was a sought-after part in Hollywood. But nobody could have played it better than Stone.

She really reinvented herself after high school. Weight loss, blonde hair, etc.

The Catherine character in BI is tough and smart so the audience likes her. The Nomi character in Showgirls is an aggressive idiot so the audience either laughs at her or dismisses her.

Earler today I was watching To Catch a Thief and all I could think of was Cecil Beaton's comments on how, from the wrong angle, Grace looked like a peasant (true!).

I was her *unofficial* acting coach during her audition and throughout the filming of "Basic Instinct." (She'd said she was always a fan of mine.) She used my style, my clothes, my house, my cars, my silk scarfs, and she used my gold-plated Tiffany cigarette lighter to smoke my cigarettes (Camel straights).

Now you know.

Was Sharon Stone ever a star? Wasn't she just a one and a half note wonder who faded out fast?

Basic Instinct was fun, but it does not stand up to repeat viewing.

I never noticed her psycho eyes before. Is that acting or is it the real thing?

She may have used all those things , R14. But we can thank the Cinema Gods she didn't use Cheryl's beaver.

Btw, for anyone who doesn't know, Basic Instinct was turned down by almost every actress in Hollywood before it got to Sharon Stone. At the time, they really wanted Geena Davis but she kept turning it down because of the sex scenes. They offered it to Michelle Pfeiffer, Meg Ryan. Nobody wanted it. Stone moved right in.

Of course they didn't want it, the film is trash. It could only have been carried by a B- actress seeking A-level of fame and star recognition, which she got.

Ha ha.
