Miami, unfortunately. Trying to get somewhere else. The reality is that anyplace can be OK with the proper application of enough money. I don't have that though.

A good question would be what's the best place to live on a middle class income?

by Anonymousreply 76August 6, 2017 5:21 PM

by Anonymousreply 87August 6, 2017 6:18 PM

Pensacola, Florida, the land of white sand and hot men. White sand anyway.

by Anonymousreply 100August 6, 2017 8:14 PM

I suspect my sister is an occasional DLer. I think I've heard her distinctive voice in threads about topics which interest her, and heard her say someone should die in a grease fire.

So you can add her to your map, R90, northwest of Austin TX, midway between Killeen and Lampasas (near my favorite town in Texas: Ding Dong).

by Anonymousreply 101August 6, 2017 8:20 PM

No, DL'ers. R101 is not kidding. It is a real town. :)

As a self-selected survey, obviously not scientific, but the map is interesting. I thought members would be more clustered around major cities, but it doesn't appear so. There are major ones, but also many mid size and a few small ones too.

R163 — Ventura isn't Jewish, it's predominately Anglo and Mexican, although I have heard it referred to as "Ventucky," due to the white trash element which has invaded it. You're thinking of Camarillo, a few miles south on 101. Now, Camarillo is JEWISH. (Not that that's a bad thing.)

r200, R200, According to Google Maps, 158 KM from Porsgrunn to Oslo, 404 KM to Bergen, but I would hope our Norwegian would give authentic information. I would love the other Scandinavian DLers to add themselves.

When I lived in Bergen (early winter1988) there was even a gay club there called Manhattan, which opened fairly early in the winter because it got dark at 2:00 pm.

R221 no one said you were lying. Another in Portland (...but I was born here! And left, came back, left, and came back). To be honest, I don't much like the changes that have taken place since the 90s, except for the explosion in home prices (only because one day I'll inherent a lovely house in a wonderful location, $$$$). Regardless, I do like Portland, though, for an American city. I hope the national obsession with it has died down, and with it, the population inflows. (One of the local alternative weeklies has a page of "street fashion" and the question they tend to ask the pedestrians they photograph is "Where are you from?")

Still, I'd rather be back in Montreal.

R116 Eh, it's fine. We're genetically wired to constantly bitch about it, but travelling outside makes you realize just how underrated having so little violent crime and crime in general really is. I also like that the tree lobby is so powerful here and we're gradually turning the city into an even bigger forest than it already is. Trees, trees for everyone!

So I've been looking at pictures of Asmara and it looks so quaint and lovely. The economy section of its Wikipedia entry is so scant I wonder how it's faring these days and what its outlook is in general. I've always preferred reading about cities than countries, for some reason. I'm telling you, city-states are the future!

R352, Would you be willing to update us. I'm not sure where Tilling is. And No, I don't intend to be any ugly American. Just an honest and open one.

[quote][R352], Would you be willing to update us. I'm not sure where Tilling is.

Don't know if R352 is still reading this thread, but I can give you a bit of information that might help. Tilling is a fictional town, generally assumed to be Rye, England. It's the town where author E.F. Benson lived and upon which he based his "Mapp and Lucia" novels.

If you want to enjoy a good laugh at the English class system in the 20s and 30s, they're a real treat.

Metropolis.

The rent here is great, but you have to watch out for the gigantic alien monsters that sometimes attack.

Hey, lovelies! You can add yourself to the DL map linked above. You don't have to register anything. Just find your location, and pin it. And you don't have to post here (on DL) to update the map (my apologies to the DLer who created the original map). I know that most of our posters are in the US, but I try to keep the British Commonwealth in my thoughts when I comment. Knowing that we have commenters in Norway and Switzerland (for example) help me be a better poster here (I hope).

r382 I was in Brno for the first time last year. I was very pleasantly surprised: it seemed a charming and vibrant smallish city. Very low prices too!

I live in Vienna... not the one in Virginia.... the real deal!

by Anonymousreply 383February 17, 2018 8:29 PM

No kidding, r383? I live in Vienna too! (The same one, i.e., not the one in Virginia).

I just dropped a pin on r90's map for us.

Which district are you in? I'm in the 19th. What are the chances we'd both be sitting here on DL on a Saturday night?

R383 & R384 Any of you two fellas that Austrian who came for me [italic]hard[/italic] in last year's Eurovision thread when I implied your contestant had his eyelids done, Elaine Stritch-style? Thought he'd cross the border and strangle me right there and then. I swear that event is the only time we euro homosexuals drop all sense of camaraderie and become all-out nationalistic animals. And I wouldn't want it any other way.

Also, could Boris from Moscow please tell us a bit about what life is like there? It's okay if you're a paid troll; this is a safe space.

by Anonymousreply 387February 17, 2018 9:31 PM

Hey R384! Sorry for the late reply. We are almost neighbors: I live near the border of the 18th and 19th districts, near Währinger Park, if you know where that is.
