The only time he comes alive on screen has been in musicals. Whenever he tries to be serious, he falls flat and feels like someone reading lines for the first time. He's limited.

I don't really know what the future holds for him. He tried to shake things up with that Ted Bundy movie, but he and the film itself weren't very good. I could see him continuing to spiral into drugs to shield himself from the fact that the only thing he could do well (be a pretty twink) is now over forever.

He's not going to be someone like John Travolta who fell off the map many times in his career and kept getting comeback after comeback. The difference between them is that Travolta has talent and a good bit more range (but sometimes really poor decision making when it comes to scripts).

His move into bodybuilding (or torso-building) suggests he's not all that attached to being "the twink." He'll probably settle for being "the dad" on some teen show.

Eh, I haven't watched everything he has done but Matt Bomer's acting has improved over the years, because he *keeps* trying. I saw the film where he played a kid's dad in the mountains and he was good, I saw him on Will & Grace and he was good and I tried watching that show where he plays a psycho, "The Sinner" and he's good in that too (the show sucks) but he also has 10 years on Efron. The problem is, I think, most actors figure out what their type is and never try to do anything else because they're likely to not be successful at doing anything else the first time out. I think Efron would need to find a teacher, keep trying to do new things, and at some point he'll improve. He just has to be willing to actually try.

I think this is why so-called "character actors" have longer careers. They were never dependent on their looks. Many of them have been attractive and can glam up for roles, but they're not scared of getting their hands dirty or looking awful. I don't think Efron is capable of such a feat. I'd love to be surprised at some point in the future, but you can usually tell if an actor has that spark early on and I don't think he does. He's never been anything beyond tolerable in any of his films.

They're more likely to take a risk on an actor like Efron playing against type because his name will get people to watch it and hopefully help find the film a distributor.
