It's official: “Despacito” is now the most streamed song of all time, and it got there in just six months.
Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee’s hit original song and its remix featuring Justin Bieber have accumulated more than 4.6 billion streams across all platforms since its release in January.
The track, which is currently No. 1 in the U.S., U.K. and Australia, surpasses the previous record holder, Justin Bieber’s “Sorry” (and its various remixes), which has clocked up more than 4.38 billion combined plays, Universal Music Group reports.
“Despacito,” which means “slowly” in Spanish, was fast out the gate. Just hours after the Latin collab arrived on Jan. 13, the Puerto Rican singers had a monster on their hands. The upbeat track set a new record on Vevo by becoming the Spanish-language video with the most views in 24 hours (it collected 5.4 million hits). Another Vevo record fell when “Despacito" become the fastest Spanish-language video to reach 200 million views, which it achieved in 22 days. It's also the fastest ever music video to 2 billion views (154 days).
Daddy Yankee and Luis Fonsi Read More 'Despacito' Boosts Puerto Rico's Economy
Commenting on his record-smashing feat, Fonsi said: "Streaming is a connector for audiences worldwide and it has helped my music reach every corner of the planet. It is truly an honor that ‘Despacito’ is now the most streamed song in history.”
Lucian Grainge, chairman & CEO, Universal Music Group, congratulated Fonsi and everyone who helped make the record a hit. “Luis Fonsi already had the undisputed, biggest song of the year – and now he’s setting even bigger records. Streaming has opened up the possibility of a song with a different beat, from a different culture and in a different language to become a juggernaut of success around the world. My congratulations to Luis Fonsi, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber, as well as everyone at Universal Music Latin Entertainment, Republic Records and Def Jam, on this tremendous accomplishment.”
Streaming has "democratized music consumption, it has made Latin music increasingly relevant on the charts and it has amplified our songs and videos to a world stage,” comments Jesús Lopez, chairman & CEO of Universal Music Latin America & Iberian Peninsula. “‘Despacito’ has broken every record thanks to Luis Fonsi's talent and creativity, which have positioned him as a pillar of Latin music for the past 20 years. I also congratulate Erika Ender, Daddy Yankee and Justin Bieber for their valuable contributions, as well as the different teams involved in the success of this song.”
"Despacito" (released on Universal Music Latino / Raymond Braun / SchoolBoy / Def Jam / UMLE / Republic Records) is just the 35th single to top the Billboard Hot 100 for at least 10 weeks. The record for the longest stint at No. 1 is owned Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men's "One Sweet Day,” which ruled for 16 weeks in 1995-96.

It's success in the US is because of Justin Bieber, who's on the US version. Otherwise, this would only be a niche song among Latinos.

I don't understand the popularity of this song. It has a lot of elements heard 100 million times in other Spanish language pop songs, so I am not sure why it is so particularly popular with Spanish speakers. It does not have a particularly great (or simplistic enough) hook for English speakers -- other than "DES - pa -CI-tO" repeated a few times within a lot of other swirling words.
I haven't heard the Bieber version.
Is Shakira's entire vocal repertoire partially generated on a synthesizer?
2Cellos have been called savvy entrepeneurs; also A#1 pop-classical instrumental bottom feeders recycling the same keys and techniques. I haven't seen any of them releasing their Dvorak Concerto AFAIK.

Sorry to break it to you, madam, but both Luis Fonsi and Daddy Yankee have been around for a long time and are both huge in the Latin music industry. With this song, they've established their footprints firmly in the English mainstream music world.
And their music will be around much longer than your hair.

Up until a few weeks go I hadn't heard the song, ever.
A coworker of mine was always going "despacito" had no idea what the fuck he was saying or singing.
It annoyed me just because of that. Then a few weeks ago I heard it on a mostly current-with-lots-of-80's-90's-music station.
Eh, it's a'right.

That reason is good as any to buy this garbage music, I guess
by Anonymous | reply 49 | July 19, 2017 10:46 PM |
Why is it garbage, R49? Is it because you don't understand the language? The lyrics are half of the equation, so if you don't understand the words, your opinion is half-formed. The beat itself is very catchy, but then again, maybe you don't like pop/reggaeton. But of course, that's your opinion and you're entitled to it.
Millions of people disagree with you, though.

Ay
Fonsi
DY
Oh
Oh no, oh no
Oh yeah
Diridiri, dirididi Daddy
Go
Despacito
Quiero respirar tu cuello despacito
Despacito
Quiero desnudarte a besos despacito
(Sube, sube)
Quiero ver bailar tu pelo
Quiero ser tu ritmo
Que le enseñes a mi boca
Tus lugares favoritos (favoritos, favoritos baby)
Quiero, quiero, quiero ver cuánto amor a ti te cabe
Yo no tengo prisa, yo me quiero dar el viaje
Empecemos lento, después salvaje
Pasito a pasito, suave suavecito
Nos vamos pegando poquito a poquito
Cuando tú me besas con esa destreza
Veo que eres malicia con delicadeza
Pasito a pasito, suave suavecito
Despacito
Quiero respirar tu cuello despacito
Despacito
Quiero desnudarte a besos despacito
(Sube, sube)
Quiero ver bailar tu pelo
Quiero ser tu ritmo
Que le enseñes a mi boca
Tus lugares favoritos (favoritos, favoritos baby)
Déjame sobrepasar tus zonas de peligro
Hasta provocar tus gritos
Y que olvides tu apellido
Despacito
Pasito a pasito, suave suavecito
Nos vamos pegando, poquito a poquito
Que le enseñes a mi boca
Tus lugares favoritos (favoritos, favoritos baby)
Pasito a pasito, suave suavecito
Nos vamos pegando, poquito a poquito
Hasta provocar tus gritos
Y que olvides tu apellido (DY)
Despacito

I am surprised that these songs are being so successful, as they are anything but good - just VERY generic pop with touches of reguetón. The only good one is Enrique Iglesias' "Bailando" - the rest are incredibly bland and mediocre.
R65, Amália Rodrigues has nothing to do with Spanish culture. She was Portuguese. By the way, given the incredibly low standards shown by so many people. I am surprised that Portuguese Pimba music hasn't become somewhat popular.
R66, Chavela Vargas couldn't sing to save her life, and what encumbered was the constant support he received from Pedro Almodóvar, who is well known for sabotaging the careers of talented people and promoting the incompetent who kiss his bloated behind and don't overshadow him. She was awful by any standards.
By the way, if you like this kind of music, this song by the insufferable Daddy Yankee is much better than the saccharine, dullified thing that he has done with Luis Fonsi.

I love Latin music and Despacito is a decent song. My issue is that Despacito is, without challenge, THE most over-played song in the entire history of radio. With "Call Me Maybe" a close second. Despacito is played literally at least twice an hour on every single radio station. It's annoying as hell. And it's true that if Bieber had not collabo'd on it, it wouldn't have been nearly as successful in US/UK/AUS - the English-dominant countries.
Didn't Enrique have a song that was popular in the US, I think it was Ballamous or something like that? Help me out...maybe I'm thinking of someone else...I tried to find the song on YOubute but couldn't find i
