Splash (1984)
t was one of the biggest hit movies of the year, but it is dated and does not hold up well.
Daryl Hannah is practically monosyllabic, and borderline Autistic. This is the year people started to name their daughters Madison, which has since become one of the most popular names for newborn girls in the early 21st century.
Before Daryl Hannah accepted the role of Madison, it had already been turned down by Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Melanie Griffith, Genie Francis, Lynne Frederick, Fiona Fullerton, Diane Lane, Tatum O'Neal, Michelle Pfeiffer, Sharon Stone, and Kathleen Turner.
Before Tom Hanks accepted the role of Allen Bauer, it had already been turned down by Chevy Chase, Bill Murray, Dudley Moore, John Travolta, and Michael Keaton. Travolta passed on the advice of his agent.
Did you remember Splash when it came out, and what do you think of it now?

Daryl Hannah acts like a cave woman

You idiots realize she was a mermaid, right? You expected her to come out of the sea quoting Shakespeare?

Since that movie I have judged every mother of every little girl named Madison. Seriously, it's the surname of a President, a street in Manhattan and a character played by a somewhat Autistic actress. Great name choice!

R2. Wait...she was a mermaid? What would we do without your astute insight!

As well you should have Julie

Dudley Moore?!? I'm glad we didn't get that version.

I love '80s Tom Hanks. He was funnier, sexier and quirkier. Splash, Bachelor Party, Money Pit, Big and Punchline. I'll take them over Philadelphia or Cast Away any day.

Dudley Moore played this role in real life when he dated Susan Anton

I'm surprised that there aren't sequels and prequels and reboots and reimaginings and a Broadway show by now.

Hanks turned out to be the biggest star out of all those men.
And who the fuck are Genie Francis, Lynne Frederick, or Fiona Fullerton?

R10 There's a gender-swapped reboot coming out next year with Channing Tatum as the mermaid.

Saw it when it first came out. Thought it was cute and inoffensive. It was clear that Daryl Hannah could not play a convincing human but she was fine as a fish. Tom Hanks was considered a major comic find.

R11- Genie Francis played Laura of "Luke and Laura" fame. I think she left General Hospital around 1982. I can't see why she'd turn this down because it's not like her film career caught on fire. Maybe she was scared of the water.

Tom Hanks has a long scene where he completely naked in a water tank covering his dick with his hands. It's totally unsexy and forgettable because it's Tom Hanks, but other actors might not want to have done it.

He was kind of sexy in a dorky way. I mean at that point the movie Big was his biggest hit.

That's not Diana Ross, r15. That's Gladys Knight.
Why are you even linking either woman on this thread?

You forgot about me, OP. I was offered to play the mermaid but Sue Mengers messed up the deal.

Tom Hanks got better looking as he got older, put on some weight and lost the 80s perm.
Great bush that I would have gladly buried my face in.

One thing I remember is that I rented Splash on the same day as my first gay porn, William Higgins Cousins. Friends were at my house to watch Splash but I couldn't wait for the movie to be over so I could watch the porn. Couldn't wait for my parents to go to bed either. I was very underage, but the video store gave it to me. Oh and once I got off I watched Splash again and liked it.

Isn't that the point? She was supposed to be awkward as a human.
Any more news about that Channing Tatum remake? This is all I could find an AV Club article from April:
[quote]With her next movie, Marja-Lewis Ryan is jumping from the gritty, drug-fueled drama of 6 Balloons to the campy mermaid romance of the Splash reboot. Almost two years have gone by since the Channing Tatum-Jillian Bell-led reboot was announced, and we’ve still seen no word of a release date or production announcement. But Ryan, who is writing the script, tells us that it’s still on.

Madison learned English by immersing herself watching American TV at a department store of course it wasn’t Shakespearean.
I loved when she climbed up the streetlight to gaze at a Dont Walk signal because she thought it was PRETTY!

OMG, can you imagine what this movie would have been like if it HAD co-starred Julia Louis-Dreyfus and, say, John Travolta?!

Agreed R27! Only watched it because of John Candy and Eugene Levy.
John "requested" his friend Eugene get the part of Walter Kornbluth, as in, "Gene gets the part or you don't get me," which showed not only John Candy's clout but his loyalty to friends.
For years CityTV used the squash scene from this movie in their afternoon movies intro.
