MENSA
I recently found out I'm qualified to join. Which kind of surpises me, but it does explain a lot. I've always felt like I'm more intelligent than most people, and it turns out that I actually am.
So, is there some reason why I would want to be part of this organization? What are the benefits, besides bragging rights?

Also, let me add that the experience of taking the test was really depressing. I was expecting it to be much more difficult than it is. I came away feeling that anyone who can't score at least a 130 should probably be euthanized.
Which turns out to be 98% of the population. That's scary.

Well, I'm a member of MENSES!

Well, look at our President.
I was asked to join back in high school, but refused at that time because I didn't want to be in some kind of creepy ghetto of smart people. Maybe that was the wrong decision.
I still think it would be a disappointment - there must be better ways to find people you connect with.

I qualify but anyone I've ever met that was a member was not someone I found particularly smart or interesting. Another smart and interesting brainiac friend of mine had joined, and he said the people there were boring and he dropped out, so I never bothered to join. I have heard a lot of people complain about MENSA not being worth joining.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | July 11, 2017 7:13 PM

Exactly, I also qualified, but the Mensa members I met were blowhard creeps, no thanks.

98% of the population SHOULD be euthanized. You will realize this more and more the older you get, OP, and yes, it is very scary.

r1 it's only scary to you because you see things others can't. My father's IQ was 165 and I always had to remind him that most people couldn't see and understand things the way he did. You are not the majority but the minority

R11, that's precisely my point. Apparently that 165 IQ wasn't passed down. The fact that I am the minority is what is depressing. I don't actually think I'm that intelligent, but if I really am that much smarter than most people, then humanity is pretty well fucked.

I never took the test (or had my IQ tested) because I am afraid to find out that I'm not as smart as I think I am.

I passed the Mensa test by one point. My buddy failed it by one point. I never joined because I don't really see any advantage, either social or cultural. As a cop, I don't usually run around with brainiacs, and I don't feel I'm socially deprived. I mean…what's the point?

In the 70's, I was a member of a now defunct California academic program in public schools called the MGM club (Mentally Gifted Minors). From what I understand, the same IQ criteria as for MENSA gained you entry. So, if I could obtain the records proving that I was a member, I could get automatic MENSA membership, but nah.....

Use to know a woman that used her "I'm a member of Mensa" like a cudgel. Truthfully i never found her to be that smart, I did find her to be envious of other women and truly one of the most petty humans I ever met. Jokingly - maybe had an "IQ" but utterly void of "EQ." P, you were and are a horrible jerk.

Goddammit, for the second time, it's Mensa, not MENSA. It isn't a fucking acronym. If you can't comprehend something as simple as that, you have no business discussing Mensa in the first pace, as I'm sure reading comprehension enters into the equation at some point.

Bad news for the Menses who thought joining would open doors: the way to open doors is to have rich corrupt parents to send you to prep school and an Ivy institution and then have their friends give you jobs. Mensa is useful as a bragging right at a party of one, though.

I was once a houseguest of a member of Mensa and got to look at the Mensa newsletter (this is pre-Internet). The newsletter was filled with complaints by Mensans who felt misunderstood, with a significant number who were physically disabled. R45 has it right--Mensa's full of people who don't have great jobs (or any jobs), but need people to know how smart they are.
I live in a city with a world-class university--I've never met anyone here who's even mentioned Mensa. Bragging rights around here work on a whole different level--Nobels, Fields medals, founding a (really) successful company, etc.

I'm qualified to join, but there's no way I'd ever be interested in that. Years ago, I attended a seminar hosted by Marilyn vos Savant, the reputed most intelligent woman on earth. She made it very clear that she didn't think much of IQ tests, and made the point that, to keep a sharp mind, you need curiosity, and you can't take easy outs. Do math the old-fashioned way, for example, instead of using a calculator. Try to meet a variety of people, and be open to learning from people who are different from you. I'm very much a nerd, with a wide range of interests that most people find bizarre. At least, here on DL, I can sort of let my freak flag fly, and I don't mind when people 'Mary!' me: it's actually sort of an honor. The best thing about becoming an adult is the point when you don't care that you're a freak, and you just start doing the things you really love.
I like bird-watching, growing orchids, collecting fossils and semi-precious gems. I always keep an eye out for plant 'sports' (mutations) in the hope of propagating them. I've knocked on peoples' doors to ask permission to collect violets from someone's lawn that had an unusual color, other than the usual deep purple. My friends are all familiar with these things about me, and even though they roll their eyes, always indulge me. I'm hoping to purchase a new wallet from Launer (we'll see if I get a nice tax refund next year), simply because they're the suppliers of the Queen's handbags. I think it would be the height of elegance!

I had 2 extremely close friends *both women) in college that were both asked to join mensa and went to at least one meeting.
Neither one of them got a professional degree nor did they have very lucrative careers after. One is an alcoholic and never reads anything, nor stays up on current events. SHe totally imersed herself in marriage and 5 kids and all the drama that entails, The other one was basically lazy and never tried very hard and made some very poor cjhoices in life.
I wasnt smart in college and could barely maintain a c average. I managed to make more of a go at it career wise and made very carefull decisions in all area of my life. Im not exactly the poster boy for it, but if you are looking at monetary sucess and basic sucess as a human being, having a real focus in one area for a career, and being very ambitious in life, ,plus having a keen sense of being able to size up people is a lot more valuable than an IQ of 155.

I agree with r75 -- the one "Mensa eligible" person I know also suffers from mental illness (probably borderline personality disorder), dropped out of high school, and has worked menial jobs her entire adult life. She also used to be a cokehead.
That said, a strong work ethic AND a 155 IQ never hurt anyone in academia.
