A young Anna Deavere Smith.

I like her a lot.

by Anonymousreply 1June 14, 2017 2:22 AM

She's a babe.

by Anonymousreply 2June 14, 2017 2:22 AM

Clearly she's fabulous.

by Anonymousreply 3June 14, 2017 2:24 AM

I like her.

by Anonymousreply 4June 14, 2017 2:24 AM

All the men constantly interrupting her during Senate grillings makes me think they're scared of her.

by Anonymousreply 5June 14, 2017 2:24 AM

I wish she'd cut her hair, or at least put it up. She's over 50 years old -- time to stop trying to look like Alice in Wonderland.

by Anonymousreply 6June 14, 2017 2:25 AM

She's a very smart, beautiful woman who sure knows how to cut through the bullshit.

Kudos to her!

by Anonymousreply 7June 14, 2017 2:26 AM

She looks amazing for 50+.

by Anonymousreply 8June 14, 2017 2:26 AM

So well spoken and obviously smart.

Too bad Americans don't value those in their presidents generally

by Anonymousreply 9June 14, 2017 2:29 AM

I was waiting for the cunty comment. R6 is the winning cunt--and not even accurate. Gays shooting down strong good looking women--really, Mary, just get laid.

by Anonymousreply 10June 14, 2017 2:29 AM

For the second time in a week, Sen. Kamala Harris was cut off by her Republican colleagues while posing questions at a Senate intelligence committee hearing -- drawing the spotlight to the potential 2020 contender.

While asking Attorney General Jeff Sessions about his refusal to answer questions Tuesday concerning conversations he may have had with President Donald Trump, the California Democrat was interrupted by Sen. John McCain of Arizona.

Senate intelligence chairman Richard Burr then stepped in and said: "Senators, we'll allow the chair to control the hearing. Sen. Harris, let him answer the question." The exchange was an almost exact repeat of last week, when McCain cut in on her intense questioning of Deputy Attorney Rod Rosenstein, and Burr told her to stop and let Rosenstein answer.

Very attractive and very smart...the old men despise her.

by Anonymousreply 12June 14, 2017 2:31 AM

She's the future of the party.

by Anonymousreply 13June 14, 2017 2:32 AM

I thought she would be ready by 2024, but maybe if she keeps getting this exposure she could be ready by 2020.

I like her a lot. She is from my state.

by Anonymousreply 14June 14, 2017 2:33 AM

Whenever she wants to run, R14, she'll win. Obama ran after being in the US Sentate for 3 years. She has a lot more experience than Obama did though, being the two-time elected CA Attorney General.

by Anonymousreply 15June 14, 2017 2:35 AM

Love her.

by Anonymousreply 16June 14, 2017 2:35 AM

She was an amazing AG in Calif, she is super bright, happy for her emergence nationally, definitely don't fuck with her, she tore up San Francisco

by Anonymousreply 17June 14, 2017 2:35 AM

We have to pretend that she's amazing because she's half black which is as good as full black for the left and black people. Does she even consider herself black? Well, she probably does for political reasons.

by Anonymousreply 18June 14, 2017 2:35 AM

I agree r14. She's not as smart or savvy as Obama but I think she making a name for herself. And she is very ambitious.

by Anonymousreply 19June 14, 2017 2:37 AM

She's half Indian. It would be interesting if the Democratic and Republican(Nicki Haley) nominees in 2020 end up being Indian women.

by Anonymousreply 20June 14, 2017 2:38 AM

I think she is good because she has shined in action r18. Smart, charismatic and tough.

Did you watch the Comey and Sessions testimony?

by Anonymousreply 21June 14, 2017 2:38 AM

r18, she is also an Asian woman and she would be the first Asian to run for President.

by Anonymousreply 22June 14, 2017 2:38 AM

This cut.

r15 you're underestimating the misogyny in the US,

by Anonymousreply 24June 14, 2017 2:39 AM

r23, no more of a chin length style.

by Anonymousreply 25June 14, 2017 2:39 AM

She is absolutely as smart & savvy as Barack, and she doesn't need to consider herself anything but fabulous ,,,and she is wearing her pearls from Ann Getty,,so all your stupids cunts can shut it,,

by Anonymousreply 26June 14, 2017 2:42 AM

She is also a person who can win support from both the Hillary and Bernie wings, if Bernie selfishly doesn't decide to run.

by Anonymousreply 27June 14, 2017 2:42 AM

VP is the best that women can hope for in this country, at least for another decade. Everybody is too gun shy after Hillary to put another woman at the top of the ticket anytime soon.

by Anonymousreply 28June 14, 2017 2:44 AM

r18, do we have to pretend you're a dumb cunt? No, we don't--you decided that for us.

by Anonymousreply 29June 14, 2017 2:45 AM

r27 sanders will never support her, nor will his navel gazing trolls.

by Anonymousreply 30June 14, 2017 2:46 AM

Joe Biden/Kamala Harris Ticket 2020

Then he tool old and doen't run in 2024, she runs and wins. First women president.

by Anonymousreply 31June 14, 2017 2:46 AM

A woman can win as long as she's a Republican. Democrats would have to run someone like Jim Webb in order to (possibly) win a national election.

by Anonymousreply 32June 14, 2017 2:46 AM

r30, sanders needs to have a stroke and go retire somewhere.

by Anonymousreply 33June 14, 2017 2:47 AM

I think she runs in 2020 and hopefully the party quickly unites behind her.

She will win the general election.

by Anonymousreply 34June 14, 2017 2:48 AM

Jim Webb/Linc Chafee. A winning ticket.

by Anonymousreply 35June 14, 2017 2:48 AM

And r33, you need to die in a grease fire, cunt.

by Anonymousreply 36June 14, 2017 2:48 AM

Is Kamala a lover of the taco?

by Anonymousreply 37June 14, 2017 2:49 AM

Yes, by all means, she absolutely must get a haircut that reminds everyone of Hillary Clinton.

by Anonymousreply 38June 14, 2017 2:49 AM

Smart and attractive. She seems to rattle the men folk like John Mccain & please slow down Beauregard Session

by Anonymousreply 39June 14, 2017 2:50 AM

Republicans will dig the dirt up on her relationship with WB,,yawn,,,

by Anonymousreply 40June 14, 2017 2:50 AM

No, r37, she's married to a guy. Google is your friend.

by Anonymousreply 41June 14, 2017 2:51 AM

who is WB r40?

by Anonymousreply 42June 14, 2017 2:54 AM

WB= Willie Brown, Mayor of San Francisco ,circa 1996,,,but the bitches in SF never forget,,
Joe Biden/Kamala Harris Ticket 2020

No Biden. No Sanders. Even no Warren.

I want the Democrats to have new blood. Energize another field of leaders through our primary process.

Kamala Harris, Martin Heinrich, Amy Klobuchar, Kristen Gillibrand, Corey Booker, Steve Bullock. That is what I want the primary to look like.

New fresh faces ready to rebrand the Democratic party and sweep the White House and Congress like Obama did.

by Anonymousreply 44June 14, 2017 2:58 AM

ITA, R44, and that's coming from someone who adores Biden and Warren.

by Anonymousreply 45June 14, 2017 2:59 AM

Kamala Harris...I like her.

by Anonymousreply 46June 14, 2017 3:01 AM

I like Warren, Biden, Sanders, etc. But it would be good to have leaders under 60!

by Anonymousreply 47June 14, 2017 3:01 AM
Joe Biden/Kamala Harris Ticket 2020 Then he tool old and doen't run in 2024, she runs and wins. First women president.

Yes we need an 80 yr old on the ticket who's been is Washington for 60 yrs (60 yrs of baggage), and who has twice been denied the nomination by voters.

We need to keep all of the current geriatrics in Washington and in office til they die.

by Anonymousreply 48June 14, 2017 3:02 AM

Corey Booker is owned by Wall Street.

Forget him.

by Anonymousreply 49June 14, 2017 3:02 AM

Just watched her interactions with Sessions. She spoke in a harsh monotone, cut him off repeatedly, and was warned for her rudeness.

by Anonymousreply 50June 14, 2017 3:04 AM

Democrats have to rebuild and rebrand before thinking about national elections. There's no way in hell that Kamala Harris will win a national election in 2020.

by Anonymousreply 51June 14, 2017 3:04 AM

Booker is closeted, no?

by Anonymousreply 54June 14, 2017 3:06 AM
There's no way in hell that Kamala Harris will win a national election in 2020.

That is EXACTLY how Obama won. A charismatic newcomer to Washington energizing the country after an unpopular Republican President.

[52] Yes

by Anonymousreply 56June 14, 2017 3:07 AM
There's no way in hell that Kamala Harris will win a national election in 2020.

Trump will never crack 46-47%. His floor is around 42%. The incumbent will always have an advantage but claiming that Harris, or any Dem nomee, will have no chance against Trump is laughable.

by Anonymousreply 57June 14, 2017 3:07 AM

She got her career by sucking Willie Brown's cock and she was a disaster for San Francisco. What are you people smoking??

I know you love her because she's black and has a vagina, but if you want to hand Trump a second term, run her.

She treats everyone around her like shit too, from staff to volunteers. She's totally impossible and incompetent.

by Anonymousreply 62June 14, 2017 3:09 AM

No democratic politician (especially a minority) from California can win a national election in this political climate. That's why, r53.

by Anonymousreply 63June 14, 2017 3:09 AM

r58=misogynist who can't get fucked.

by Anonymousreply 64June 14, 2017 3:09 AM

by Anonymousreply 65June 14, 2017 3:10 AM

I was waiting for r58 to show up with those same talking points. That the right needs to go back to the fact that she dated Willie Brown back in the 90s as an attack point shows they have nothing on her.

Everyone has been trying to use that as a scandal her entire political career, it never works.

by Anonymousreply 66June 14, 2017 3:10 AM

r64 is the reason why Democrats keep losing elections.

by Anonymousreply 67June 14, 2017 3:11 AM

Go run Kamala. You were warned.

by Anonymousreply 68June 14, 2017 3:11 AM

Wait, she's Indian, not black?

by Anonymousreply 69June 14, 2017 3:12 AM

Warren polls lower than Trump. Gillibrand pushed Mattress Girl.

by Anonymousreply 70June 14, 2017 3:12 AM

Obama won by big margins in 2008 and 2012. Clinton won the popular vote by 2.8 million r67. Trump only won the electoral vote because of 70,000 votes spread across three states.

Those are facts, but yes, Dems have no chance in national elections.

The Republican Party needs to look at their national election problems. Twice in recent years they have lost the popular vote, and can only win the white house by razor thin margins.

by Anonymousreply 71June 14, 2017 3:13 AM

And r67, you're your own reason you can't get fucked.

by Anonymousreply 72June 14, 2017 3:13 AM

by Anonymousreply 79June 14, 2017 3:15 AM

I was wondering why these delusional posts (along with the "she's gorgeous!" posts) kept coming like rapid fire, and then I realized this thread was created by Janbot. She's in the manic phase again.

by Anonymousreply 93June 14, 2017 3:25 AM

If her tone was "harsh," that's because it was adversarial, which is understandable.

Next, we'll hear that she "doesn't smile enough." Or that she's "not likeable." Same nonsense.

by Anonymousreply 99June 14, 2017 3:28 AM

No guarantee she runs in 2020. Running against an incumbent, even Trump, is hard. She may be calculating that 2024 may be better.

The base is so energized against Trump that a lot of heavy hitters will run in the 2020 primaries though, not the weak field that's typical against an incumbent. She may miss her chance if she doesn't run this time around.

by Anonymousreply 100June 14, 2017 3:31 AM
No guarantee she runs in 2020. Running against an incumbent, even Trump, is hard. She may be calculating that 2024 may be better.

NO! Now.

by Anonymousreply 101June 14, 2017 3:32 AM

At the very least, running for the nomination in 2020 will up her profile. LIke that gay Indiana mayor ran for DNC chair to up his profile.

by Anonymousreply 102June 14, 2017 3:33 AM

I can see her being hugely popular with younger voters, who kind of don't care as much about race and gender.

by Anonymousreply 103June 14, 2017 3:34 AM

Heinrich is only 45. Harris is 52. Maybe it should be Harris/Heinrich 2020.

by Anonymousreply 104June 14, 2017 3:36 AM

by Anonymousreply 105June 14, 2017 3:37 AM

by Anonymousreply 107June 14, 2017 3:38 AM

Harris / Heinrich in 2020!

by Anonymousreply 108June 14, 2017 3:39 AM

Harris was born in Oakland, California. She is the daughter of an Tamil Indian mother, Dr. Shyamala Gopalan Harris (1938–2009), a breast cancer researcher and daughter of an Indian diplomat, who emigrated from Chennai, India, in 1960,[7][8] and a Jamaican-American father, Donald Harris, a Stanford University economics professor.[13] Her name, Kamala, means "lotus flower" (कमल) in Hindi.[14] She was extremely close with her maternal grandfather, Rajam Gopalan, an Indian diplomat,[8] and as a child she would frequently visit her family in Besant Nagar.[15] She has one younger sister, Maya, a lawyer and public policy advocate, who married Tony West, a former Associate Attorney General of the United States.[16]

The family moved to Berkeley, California, where both of Kamala's parents attended graduate school.[17] They also introduced their daughter to civil rights protests, which were common during that time in Berkeley.[17] Kamala's parents divorced when she was 7.[17] Shyamala raised her daughters in Berkeley, where the family lived in a predominantly African-American neighborhood and where the girls sang in a Baptist choir,[12] and they were also raised with Hindu beliefs.[14] Her mother eventually moved the family to Montreal, Quebec, Canada, where Shyamala took a position doing research at the Jewish General Hospital and teaching at McGill University.[18][19]

After graduating from Montreal's Westmount High School in Quebec, Harris attended Howard University in Washington, D.C., where she majored in political science and economics.[20][21] At Howard, Harris was elected to the liberal arts student council as freshman class representative, a member of the debate team, and joined Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority.[20]

Harris then returned to California, earning her Juris Doctor (J.D.) from University of California, Hastings College of the Law in 1989.[22] Harris failed the California bar exam her first time, later saying, "it's not a measure of your capacity."[12] She was admitted to the State Bar of California in 1990.[23]

I like her but there's something very brittle about her that might become aggravating in large doses - which a run for President would mean.

by Anonymousreply 110June 14, 2017 3:41 AM

R110, yeah, they're going to have to tease out any of those irritating things with consultants and work on them.

r110--you mean like Trump?

PLEASE, Mary!

by Anonymousreply 112June 14, 2017 3:46 AM

Every time I try to weigh in with my opinion I get harassed. So I wonder why I waste my time with those who are so close minded that they therefore doom the Democratic Party to continuous defeat . So the following is ONLY for those who can still carefully listen:

IF the Democratic Party wants an advantage they should not run anyone from a solid Blue state. They need to win over voters in Purple and even Red states.

Next it's racist to automatically assume Blacks will come out and vote for a 1/2 Black woman married to a White man. It's also racist and very clueless to believe Kamala Harris will get the "Asian" and "women's" vote. Does Harry Reid automatically get all of the Mormon vote? Why isn't that a fair comparison?

Joe Biden would have had a better chance if the internet hadn't existed. Many of the more Liberal sites on the internet, particularly those viewed by women, have run multiple videos of him acting extremely inappropriately with multiple young teenage girls in front of their elite parents. It's obvious that the White House Press Corps when Obama was POTUS plus the paps were trying to out him for flagrantly inappropriate behavior. It wasn't a occasional occurrence when drunk at a private party.

Can you just imagine what would have happened if Biden had been the presidential nominee now that there's open season on sexual gossip of presidential nominees? Any future politicians at that level had better be super careful. Surprised the stories on VP Pence haven't exploded nationally. Guarantee that they will IF he ever becomes really close to being POTUS.

So WHO in a purple or red state, is relatively scandal free, very diplomatic (to contrast super favorably with Trump and to lure Moderate Republican voters away) and is also charismatic and appears intelligent and a very appealing speaker? WHY isn't the Democratic Party promoting those strong candidates now? Yes one should be a White male and one should not be a White male. However both should have very strong appeal NOT based on either factor.

by Anonymousreply 113June 14, 2017 3:50 AM

More to the point, how sweet was it to watch her face while she was grilling "Nervous Nelly" Sessions?

by Anonymousreply 114June 14, 2017 3:52 AM

I want Sandra Lee as our First Lady, so we need to elect Andrew Cuomo.

Just think of the fabulous themed state dinners. And costumes! Lots and lots of costumes. And cocktails....

by Anonymousreply 115June 14, 2017 3:54 AM

Please remember that Obama was 1) running against 8 years of Bush TWO, with even many Republicans becoming resentful that their candidate was not nearly as intelligent nor savvy as they'd hoped. 2) Bush was in fact in the pockets of big government according to many working class Republican voters.

3) The Democrat had the distinct advantage of running against extremely poor choices for POTUS. Talking to solid Republican voters you'd be surprised how many were disgusted by what they called the "anti-Christian, cult member" and the "POW in collusion with North Viet Nam who missed being court martialed only because of his father's influence." There are videos on the internet whose content was being passed around in Republican circles that would make the most racist Obama hater vote for the Democrat instead. No kidding.

by Anonymousreply 116June 14, 2017 4:02 AM

r113, then shut the fuck up.

by Anonymousreply 117June 14, 2017 4:38 AM

DL has to hate Harris, if we want to keep mollifying the Trump trolls now in the majority here.

By the way, does anyone have a good grease fire going? R113 could use one.

by Anonymousreply 118June 14, 2017 6:31 AM

Why are you attacking R113 instead of keeping your minds open? It's close-minded thinking and a refusal to change that led to the Republicans controlling most of US government from the very local level to the Presidency. R113 is not saying anything particularly controversial; in fact, his arguments seem well thought-out. It won't hurt the Democrats or you to simply listen.

by Anonymousreply 119June 14, 2017 8:20 AM

Be carful who you place on a pedestal. This woman takes no prisoners, and her staff are aware of the fact that she is hell bent and determined to make a mark. There is a lot of posturing here. No doubt she is strong and smart, but determined to make a name for herself at all costs.

by Anonymousreply 120June 14, 2017 10:43 AM

R120 you say that like it's a bad thing. Are you intimidated or a yellow chicken when it comes to women in power? I say Senator Harris is beautiful and formidable and has MADE her mark many times over already in her accomplishments. Dems should embrace her and support her 100%.

by Anonymousreply 121June 14, 2017 11:07 AM

R119, Thank you. That's exactly my point, and why I fear the Democrats will continue to lose unnecessarily. Why focus your energies on the reasons why your opponent should have very unfavorable ratings so that you have a better chance of winning? Why blame those who for any reason sensible or not continue to support your opponent as will always occur in a 2-party system?

Why not increase your odds of winning no matter how your opponent might be viewed by running the strongest possible candidate given the realities of the Electoral College? Take out a map and figure out how to win the current Purple Swing states and some of the Red states. Then today start vetting those up and coming candidates. Make them more visible on a national stage. Do not rely on just one option.

There are a lot of posters on this thread who have a clear cut case of OCD. Therefore I expected the name calling and rants just as I will now declare Kamala Harris will never be POTUS. Come up with a better alternative or lose once again. You wouldn't listen to my predictions last time. Your own fault.

Harris/Heinrich

Heinrich/Harris

I'm the first one that paired them. I don't care who goes first on the ticket, I want the GODDAMN credit.

by Anonymousreply 126June 14, 2017 12:15 PM

I don't know if R126 is R108, but I like the idea of Harris/Heinrich or Heinrich/Harris. She seems very bright and has political savvy while Heinrich is an all-round great guy (I've been watching him since he was first elected to the Albuquerque City Council).

R113, the reason I don't want to listen to you is that I'm tired of compromise candidates.

by Anonymousreply 127June 14, 2017 12:34 PM

R127 I'm the one that gave them the slogan (Not here for the bullshit 2020) in the Sessions thread, I believe. I listed them as Heinrich, Harris, though.

Would Americans vote in an ethnic woman as President?

Either way, I think we should be focusing on these two. Seasoned but still fresh. A very attractive pair, either way.

by Anonymousreply 128June 14, 2017 12:38 PM

r113, the reason I have is you just want to dampen any excitement that people have that are geared to women and or minorities. Trying to get us to believe that it's for the good of the party. That is bulshit, your coming from a place of mysoginy and racism. If people listened to you Obama would have never been president.

Is that a joke about BIden and sexual innuendo. Our president said he can grab a pussy and that is okay with this country. Your ideas and opinion is biased in your own prejudice.

r135, in California the republican voted for her over the other democratic choice because they felt she was going to go national and the figured she would be out and to other things soon. Whereas the other would become another Feinstein and be 80 in that office.

Although they were right it may have backfired.

There's this notion with some nervous nellies on this thread that supporting a forceful, forward-thinking woman is really going out on a limb when it comes to beating the Republicans. The deplorables did not win the popular vote. There are a lot of people who hate Trump and will continue to hate Republicans for what they are doing and will do. Whether or not she's going to run some day for president (and I'm not saying she should in 2020), she's the energy the Democrats need. Is the same concern there for Heinrich? I smell fear of women. We need people under 70. And there's an argument for force since the Democrats have lost soundly by playing it safe.

by Anonymousreply 164June 14, 2017 9:51 PM

R129, Did you actually read my posts? Are you sure your read them carefully as it really does not look like you did at all.

If so then why did you not get that I clearly said either the next candidate for POTUS and/or VP should be a woman and/or minority. However I also said that it was a mistake to select either candidate from a solid Blue state which would automatically go Democrat. To win you must win over the Purple and Red States.

Also to select a candidate because they are female and/or minority is tokenism, racism and a big mistake to assume you will therefore get a segment of voters based on your choice. Why not select a candidate who is a woman and/or minority and is also from a Red or Purple state and who ALSO has broad based appeal based on what he/she has achieved while in office, perceived character, innovative ideas and follow through, true leadership qualities with a strong following, etc. The time to recruit and develop is now. Pick multiple choices as there's no guarantee what the future will hold.

Never said Trump's crudeness wasn't offensive to me. I have always expected POTUS to be a strong, charming diplomat especially in public. As a matter of fact that's the #1 quality I would choose in a man or any friend of any kind. However that doesn't detract from the fact that there are way, way too many videos of Biden assaulting dozens of pre-teen and young teen girls in front of then Pres Obama. Also that he repeatedly offers to make them a star in Hollywood due to his connections if they see him later. He's a total jerk. I'm beyond shocked anyone on DL would consider him a fit candidate POTUS.

by Anonymousreply 165June 14, 2017 10:14 PM

I think she's tremendous. You don't get where to where she is in California unless you're smart, savvy and ready for prime time.

Having said that, I have always been a fan of Biden, and think Al Franken is a great Senator and genuine good guy. Either of those men would crush the fat idiot or the fat idiot's toady replacement in debates. Sen. Harris is fierce, and maybe she would, too.

I reject the idea that Dems don't have a good bench. As things stand, we have several viable prospects for 2020 and no doubt more will emerge.

But first let's win back the House in '18! It's a real possibility.

by Anonymousreply 166June 14, 2017 11:36 PM
One of the hearing’s most memorable moments was the questioning of Mr Sessions by Kamala Harris, a senator from California who is a former prosecutor. “I’m not able to be rushed this fast. It makes me nervous,” said the attorney-general when she attempted to hurry along his long-winded, evasive replies to her questions about his interactions with Russian officials. When Ms Harris jumped in to press Mr Sessions to say whether he had searched for written provisions that would enable him to evade the committee’s questions, John McCain, a senator from Arizona, intervened and asked Mr Burr to reprimand Ms Harris for her interruptions.

by Anonymousreply 175June 15, 2017 1:39 AM
explain to me why "person of color" is ok, while "colored" is not

She is of mixed races, more than two. In the USA "colored" was supposedly a kinder, more acceptable way to refer to "negroes" rather than that "n-word". It is not acceptable in the States to refer to black people as "coloreds". A person of color in the US can be used for anyone not white. Outside the US, colored is still used to describe multiple mixed races. For example, in South Africa, blacks are not colored. If you are a mixture of white, black, and southeast Asian, you'd be considered colored because you are not White South African and you are not Black South African.

by Anonymousreply 176June 15, 2017 1:41 AM

The bernie cult members and Trump supporters are already going psycho about her, so I can tell already we'd be lucky to have her run and win.

by Anonymousreply 177June 15, 2017 1:51 AM

Must add that Obama had some very strong positives in his favor. He was very tall which objective statistics will tell you is a tremendous advantage for a leader. He was trim and appeared to be in very good physical shape. Trump is the opposite but was running against Hillary. If Trump had had to run against Obama . . . well . .

There's another point I must bring up. Amusing myself by checking out some of the more outlandish conspiracy vids, there's a few which claim Obama is not 1/2 Black with African heritage but in fact 1/2 Indonesian. No joke. The reason I'm assuming this crazy idea got traction is his personality strikes some as more typical of Asians in that he's more reserved. Don't shoot the messenger. Perhaps there are those who in contrast immediately thought of Hollywood's tradition of strong, powerful, but also more reserved Black men starting with Sidney Poitier.

It would be ideal if there was a female and/or a minority candidate from a purple or red state with a strong military background who was likewise reserved but came across as very powerful as well.

by Anonymousreply 178June 15, 2017 1:59 AM
WHY isn't the Democratic Party promoting those strong candidates now?

True. The Democratic Party is instead going, "Who can we get who is black/Latino/female/gay/Asian/Muslim?" Not "Who has ideas? Who is charismatic? Who knows when to close their mouths and listen instead of grandstanding? Who can speak to the middle and working class instead of emphasizing the plight of the poor? Who can speak to whites without mentioning minorities?"

I was watching a local citizens panel show last night and more than half the citizens on the panel were griping about Medicaid fraud, welfare stealing their money, people dropping out of work so they can collect benefits. That's what "poor" means to them. It means "takers." So when democrats rant on about the poor, what working class and middle class people hear is "We're going to take more of your money and give it to other people." Whether it's right or wrong is meaningless. It's what they perceive to be true. .

There is absolutely no reason why a political party can't help the poor once they are in office rather than constantly talking about the poor in campaigns. Same with minorities and women. Donald Trump actually demonized minorities and shit-talked women -- and got large numbers of minority and women voters! .

Voters nowadays don't want to hear identity politics, even when they are of the identity being discussed. They want to be told they are all Americans and deserve the same chance as their fellow citizens. That speaks to everyone.

So stick with issues that affect everyone -- economy, the future, equal access to education for all. They want someone to take on the banks. They want affordable insurance.

Tell them they can have all of this -- rich or poor, black or white, male or female. Color, gender and socioeconomic status should not hold back any American.

And get ready to lose the Latino vote if you don't drop the Latino-as-oppressed theme, because they are going to vote overwhelmingly republican. Illegal immigrants came here for work. To make money. Within 20 years of being here they begin to get resentful of people they feel are cheating the system and they gripe about it to their kids. Their kids internalize that attitude and believe in an every (wo)man for themselves ideology. They want to make money too, and they want to keep it. And religiously, they are conservative Catholics or Pentecostals; who lean GOP these days.

Drop the identity politics of campaigns and help those who need to be helped once you get into office.

Because the time for listening to him entertain the masses, watching him steal the spotlight, and taking the high road is over. Deplorables crave for spectacle and we have to give it to them if we want their votes. Tammy Duckworth is one to watch. People forget the Senator Dick Durbin anointed Barack Obama, nothing happens on the national front in Democratic Party politics in Illinois without Durbin okaying it. He wanted Obama to run for Pres, he wants Tammy to run, too. Tammy has become a much better campaigner and better at retail politics, she's also frankly more moderate and ex-military. She could definitely win purple states.
Voters nowadays don't want to hear identity politics, even when they are of the identity being discussed. They want to be told they are all Americans and deserve the same chance as their fellow citizens. That speaks to everyone.

Right because white working and middle class is not an "identity". You know that group that so many have said has been left behind. As if working class minorities haven't been perpetually left behind and don't also have the burden of racial discrimination with which to deal.
So stick with issues that affect everyone -- economy, the future, equal access to education for all. They want someone to take on the banks. They want affordable insurance. Tell them they can have all of this -- rich or poor, black or white, male or female. Color, gender and socioeconomic status should not hold back any American.

What the bigots who voted for Trump want to hear is that the racial minorities (to whom they've been told all of the gains are going) will take a backseat (their rightful place) and all of those imaginary gains (that don't exist will go to Whites. Equality is not what they want, nor is it something that we have ever had. The black unemployment rate is consistently double that white unemployment rate and the Latino rate is consistently almost as high. The reality is that the majority of any gains made by the middle and the working class will always go to Whites.

Telling racial minorities, who faithfully support the Democratic Party, to continue to blindly supporting the party. But keep your mouth shut and don't be alarmed or offended when we don't speak about our intentions (which minorities already usually don't amount to much action) towards your communities. Because we don't want to offend white bigots. That is probably not a winning strategy.

When have Democrats not addressed economy, education etc., the big issues that affect everyone? The party has addressed those. It also has an obligation to address the issues that are unique to minorities (e.g. racial discrimination, gender equality, gay rights). Why? Because equality does not yet exist in this country.

The bigots, however, don't really care about the big issues. They care about vanquishing the black/brown boggey man' who they believe is preventing them from living the "American Dream" . Not the rich, nor the corporations, nor the Republican Party that represents the interests of the rich and the corporations.

by Anonymousreply 219June 15, 2017 8:02 PM

r165, and I skimmed right through this one because you lose me at telling us to settle for candidates just because they are not in blue states. We want Kamala.

by Anonymousreply 220June 15, 2017 8:05 PM

Spot on R212 Especially the Latino part: far from being the Future Democrats of America that the Dems think they are, Latinos will be the Republican base very soon.

But at that point the US will also be AmMexico because a good percentage of them truly believe that the Southwestern US/California belongs to them, and they will take the political lead by sheer force of numbers.

by Anonymousreply 221June 15, 2017 8:07 PM

I disagree r221, about latinos becoming republican, it's the opposite. The latinos that vote republican are single issue voters and it's pro-life. However the next generations don't feel as strongly about it. Asians are the miniority group that I'm discovering on the coasts are more inclined to vote republican because many are small business owners.

by Anonymousreply 222June 15, 2017 8:19 PM

Not to mention the fact that black millennial men are beginning to move away from the democratic party.

Asian Americans have steadily been becoming MORE democratic as a voting bloc actually.

by Anonymousreply 224June 15, 2017 8:21 PM

Lol, that is such a BS cherry picking article r223. Trump got a lower percent of the black vote than Dubya did. They are just comparing his increase to Republicans who ran against Obama, who won a sky high percentage of the black vote.

by Anonymousreply 225June 15, 2017 8:28 PM

She reminds me of Hillary Clinton in the 90s, and it sure looks like the Republicans treat her like if she were Hillary Clinton in the 90's.

Future Vice President at the very least. <3

by Anonymousreply 226June 15, 2017 8:33 PM

Giggle all you like, r225. The article cites all of your favorite sources ( CNN, NBC, Wiki, etc). And you might want to check your reading comprehension because the article is about house races, not Trump.

by Anonymousreply 228June 15, 2017 8:48 PM

Democrats didn't win in 2016 because they were not connected to their inner fucked up, brain dead, racist retard script!

They insisted on representing the fact-based, humane Democratic platform offering clean air, prudent spending, and opportunity for all.

Ain't nobody wanna hear that shit.

Noting humane in throwing females under the bus in favor of belligerent, entitled wannabes.

by Anonymousreply 230June 15, 2017 9:20 PM

She is great, which is why the path was cleared for her to become the junior Senator from California.

She should run in '20 if she wants to. If another dem wins the nomination, she could end up as veep or front runner for the next contested election.

Biden-Harris, Harris- Franken, Warren- Franken, etc. : All good tickets as I see it.

Obama is a terrible comparison to Harris. Barack comes across as level-headed and likable, so that even people who hate his politics secretly think he's cool. If your Daughter had to date one of them...

Kamala Harris comes across as, let's face it, one of those angry Berkeley Social Justice types that ruin parties with their intensity. When she was interrupting senile but genial Jeff Sessions, she lost a thousand votes a minute in the South and the Midwest. So, if you want another candidate that can win California by three million and lose the Rust Belt, go for it.

by Anonymousreply 234June 15, 2017 10:34 PM

Agreed, r234. And the sista gurl neck rolling and hair flipping doesn't exactly add to her appeal either.

by Anonymousreply 235June 15, 2017 10:48 PM

R234/5

Republicans pray that Democrats nominate Elizabeth Warren or Kamala Harris in 2020.

Neither is likable, and they come off as scolding tatttletale harpys when they speak.

DJT is the rudest, meanest, most malevolent figure in American political history. He has forever changed our political landscape in the worst way. I don't think Obama's brand of decency and civility will ever return, it only made the Trumpkins angrier and more resentful. We need fiery, no-nonsense progressive leadership.

by Anonymousreply 237June 16, 2017 12:13 AM

It's funny how the people who liked and voted for an abomination like Twitler are trying to tell US who is likable to Democratic voters.

by Anonymousreply 240June 16, 2017 12:23 AM

R234 and R239 just said everything that I was thinking. Nailed it!

by Anonymousreply 241June 16, 2017 12:31 AM

More crucial issue in evaluating future candidates for POTUS. Today I am predicting immigration (and I won't say of who to be PC) will be a hot button issue in the next several elections at all levels of government. Specifically there is growing resentment not against the initial waves who were thoroughly screened and therefore tended to have job ready professional skills, and who still went through weeks of classes in Western acculturation and standards, and of course who were resettled in established Muslim communities of their own choice near relatives and/or countrymen.

It is a portion of those who did not go through the above process and who for example are forcing through laws in Denver not to be cited for defecating in the streets which are leading to growing resentment when they collect WIC for multiple wives and many babies.

by Anonymousreply 242June 16, 2017 12:33 AM

by Anonymousreply 250June 16, 2017 2:30 AM

Warrior woman!!! Her and Maxine and Elizabeth!!!!

by Anonymousreply 251June 16, 2017 2:56 AM

I would like someone very smart, very boring, and very sane - as a stark contrast to what we have to deal with now. Never before in my life have I had so many dreams (nightmares) involving the president.

Every time I see Adam Schiff on TV, I wonder if he is thinking about running. He called Trump and Nunes out on all their shit effortlessly. He went to Stanford and Harvard for undergrad and law school. I also like Ted Lieu. They are both in CA, so if the "not from a blue state" theory is right - then maybe it is not a good idea. But, Warren doesn't seem interested (could've been a front - I am not sure). Biden has too much history and may be seen as "too old".

I think the right (alt-right in particular) is still poised to viciously attack any woman and/or minority, it will be a bigger uphill battle than a "boring white man". But, I don't know. Anything to get Trump out of office is all that really matters, and I'd vote for any of them.

I don't know what the hell is wrong with this country sometimes. Ireland just voted in a gay Indian PM...though he hates people on welfare & his politics aren't entirely liberal.

by Anonymousreply 252June 16, 2017 4:09 AM
She acts like the obnoxious Humanitaries prof that gave you a B- because you used the word "Mankind".

Well then why is her course called Hu[bold]man[/bold]ities?

by Anonymousreply 253June 16, 2017 4:15 AM

The people who voted for Hillary will vote for the Democratic nominee regardless of who the nominee is. I cannot imagine that a Hillary supporter will turn around and vote for him in 2020.

Putting a minority on the ticket will drive up apathetic voters who will turn out for an exciting minority candidate like Kamala would be.

by Anonymousreply 254June 16, 2017 4:16 AM

Sen. Harris (my Sen!) is doing very well but she is new to the national stage. We shall see how things go. Right now EVERYONE is thinking about running, Democrat or Republican.

by Anonymousreply 255June 16, 2017 4:17 AM

There were a LOT of minority voters who didn't turn out in Detroit and Milwaukee. Trump defeated Clinton by fewer than 35,000 total votes in Wisconsin and Michigan combined. Putting a boring white man who doesn't excite Democrats (a John Kerry type) is a losing battle.

by Anonymousreply 256June 16, 2017 4:19 AM

The trade-off (re: boring white man) is between the moderates / undecided / no-party voters and the further left who would vote for someone just because they're female or a minority. I think the second category is more flippant and less likely to vote. But, yes, Kerry was a HORRENDOUS idea. I don't know how on earth he was ever put in the race. As Karen Walker said "it's a worse plan than running a mopey stick with a horse face to defeat Bush!"

by Anonymousreply 257June 16, 2017 4:35 AM

We'd be better served checking the vote tally transfers for signs of tampering.

Gee, funny how that polling was wrong.

Gee, funny how she lost by such pin-point targeted "voting" in certain states.

Gee, funny how there's all this stuff about Russians hacking in most of the states.

by Anonymousreply 258June 16, 2017 4:37 AM

To the person upthread who said that he had read on several online sites that Kamala was referred to as "white man's kryptonite," that was a compliment not a dig. The Kartrashian women are referred to as black men's kryptonite.

In other words, white men can't resist Kamala.

by Anonymousreply 259June 16, 2017 5:34 AM

Shouldn't we be discussing if her pussy smells acceptable?

by Anonymousreply 260June 16, 2017 11:47 AM

I like her

by Anonymousreply 261June 16, 2017 12:30 PM

I am telling you guys, she could help a Democratic ticket with a strong personable white male at the head of the ticket.

Heinrich (NM) and Harris (CA) for 2020.
Biden-Harris, Harris- Franken, Warren- Franken, etc. : All good tickets as I see it.

Both Franken and Biden will be hasbeens by 2020. Biden especially has proven to be a misogynistic prick, not in a thousand years would he pick a woman to run with him.

by Anonymousreply 262June 16, 2017 12:48 PM

Don't underestimate the appeal of a aspirational black woman. Look at how middle America feels about Oprah. I am not familiar with Kamala outside of the hearings but I think she's exciting and dogged. If she could plug into even a fraction of the excitement that Obama did than she could have a huge coalition of voters. White women would be creaming themselves over her, minorities would be energized. I'm assuming she'd run against Pence at this point who is such a lying shit.

by Anonymousreply 263June 16, 2017 1:04 PM

A hard leftist half black, half Indian female scolding harpy from California for President.

Another Electoral College loss...

by Anonymousreply 264June 16, 2017 1:49 PM

Running her as VP to Heinrich would be a slap in the face for everyone who voted for Hillary and would send a clear message that she didn't win because she was a woman.

Running her for the top spot would result in another Electoral College loss like R264 said. And we [italic]cannot[/italic] let that happen in 2020. I love Kamala but we can't have this loon win again, whatever the consequence.

It's a dilemma for sure.

by Anonymousreply 265June 16, 2017 1:54 PM

She's a good egg.

by Anonymousreply 266June 16, 2017 1:59 PM

r234- 236, will just say this about any WOMAN that has political power and would dare to think of being the commander in chief. There is no reason to even listen to a word they say. There true selves are revealed.

by Anonymousreply 267June 16, 2017 2:06 PM

Wow, the lunatic right is very afraid of Harris, Warren and Biden.

Losers will lose in '20. But before then, '18 should be a big gain in the House for Dems, who at least don't suck the ass of incompetent, mendacious tyrant types on a daily basis.

by Anonymousreply 268June 16, 2017 5:10 PM

I can't help but get giddy at the mere thought of Kamala sitting down on her first day in office and start undoing Turd's legacy, one executive order after another.

Of course, that'll never happen because the world is shit that way.
Running her as VP to Heinrich would be a slap in the face for everyone who voted for Hillary and [bold]would send a clear message that she didn't win because she was a woman.[/bold]

I don't think anyone is pretending that being a woman didn't hurt Hillary. It's the FUCKING reason she lost. Do you think if Kamala was a male she would have been interrupted twice in the hearings? Not a fucking chance. But Kamala is a woman, so those bastards put her in her "place."

She ain't getting the top ticket for that same reason. We have said this many times after the 2016 election, Democrats are not going to gamble on a woman for the next 10 to 20 years. Too much is at steak and Democrats cannot lose again, so they'll run a personable young male for the foreseeable future. As humiliating as this sounds, in the current political and social climate the most a woman can hope for is a Vice president spot.
I disagree with you about the legnth, they will not wait 10 or 20 years, Harris is going to be on the ticket by 2024.

The factors here are Gen Z coming of age, but that wont happen until 2026 and 2028, and the census of 2020 . GenZ is a massive generation, and will be the largest voting block once it hits around 2028, but in the mean time everyone else will be white knuckling it.

Now 2018 and 2020 will go down to the wire again, because Boomers will start declining in numbers, but Millennials are likelier than other generations to vote third party/sit an election and a much larger number of them voted Republican than anticipated. So that offsets a lot the advantage of a shrinking Boomer voting block. Also, the first batch of Gen Zers will start voting in 2018, but historically first mid-term elections and first presidential elections are less attended when a generation starts voting.

What happens in 2018/2020 will determine a lot of what goes on in the census and gerrymandering which will affect 2022/2024 if Democrats do not win congress or the white house in 2020. 2022 will be a wash and 2024 will again be competitive. Democrats are not going to run a woman in another competitive year.

Also, if Dems end up winning the 2020 election, and they will certainly run a man, the 2024 Dem spot will go to the sitting president.

2022 and 2024 should be favorable for Democrats as the Silent Gen should be a really small pool and Boomers will have

by Anonymousreply 293June 19, 2017 3:32 AM

ops I got cut off... let me just make my point. Kamala would make a great Vice president in 2020 and 2024. Given what is likely to pan out in the coming years, I don't see how a woman could run as head of the Democratic ticket before 2028.

They'll repeatedly play on loop any footage of her getting testy towards "good, white conservative men". Sexism and racism would be a major factor as to why some white people wouldn't vote for her.

by Anonymousreply 326June 28, 2017 3:41 PM

r326, sexism is going to happen for ANY woman that tries to run for president in this country. Every single powerful woman is always treated this way. There has to be a time that it stop. It's time to stop it.

by Anonymousreply 327June 28, 2017 3:52 PM

We didn't listen to Republican opinions when we elected Barack Obama, and we should not let right wingers dictate the gender, skin color, or sexual orientation of our next President. For anyone who doesn't remember, Obama won twice.

We will win again. The future is blue.

by Anonymousreply 328June 28, 2017 4:10 PM
We will win again. The future is blue.

It is important not to lose perspective, the Democratic candidate for President has gotten the most votes 5 out of the last 6 elections.

It was only ~75k votes that would have flipped the electoral college and put Clinton out of the White House.

The right wing trolls love trying to pretend otherwise.

by Anonymousreply 329June 28, 2017 5:40 PM

yes but it's about geography. For various reasons, not enough Democratic voters came out to vote in the rust belt and Florida this past election. This election will also likely lead to more liberals moving to the west and east coasts, decreasing the liberal votes in other states. It doesn't matter how many times we win the popular vote because it's electoral votes that decide the presidency. I'm actually surprised there isn't a firm liberal majority in Florida.

by Anonymousreply 330June 28, 2017 6:18 PM

I dream of a debate or three between her and the fat Orange one.

Of course, he may not run again for any number of reasons, and then since he cares not for history he could just refuse to debate.

by Anonymousreply 331June 28, 2017 9:10 PM

I don't think we can discount Al Franken. With a D list celeb President, being a former SNL comedian won't hurt and he has the wit to take Trump on in debates and eat him alive.

by Anonymousreply 332June 28, 2017 9:23 PM

She's smart, she speaks well, and is very attractive. She's a star. But does she have what we need -- the appeal to pull in undecideds in swing states, away from the deplorable orbit?

by Anonymousreply 333June 28, 2017 9:36 PM

Trump may be the one to eat her in a debate. She was pretty unenergetic in the debate against Sanchez.

by Anonymousreply 334June 28, 2017 10:33 PM

Any Democratic nominee will be attacked, chewed up and spit out by right wing media, regardless of whether it's Kamala, Joe Biden or Anthony Weiner. Ya'll are cynical if you don't think so.

by Anonymousreply 335June 29, 2017 5:39 AM

Democrats now have to face the Republicans and the far left wing of the party ("Bernie Dudes").

by Anonymousreply 336June 29, 2017 5:40 AM

Harris is the former Attorney General of California. She is smart and had to get the job based on her skills, as she is a women and black. The white boys are fucking scared of her. And I LOVE it!

by Anonymousreply 337June 29, 2017 5:47 AM

This hot bitch is fantastic. She is not here to play for a second, and I love it!

by Anonymousreply 338June 29, 2017 5:54 AM

I love her, but I fear people are way too scared of such a self-assured, confident woman. She would make an excellent president.. for California. I don't know if some other states are ready for her, sad as it is for me to say that.

by Anonymousreply 339June 29, 2017 6:15 AM

I'd vote for a SHOE if it meant that moron Dump and his crew of homophobic, sexist, racist old white men trolls were all voted out of office.

It's amazing that so few are comprehending this administration is trying to take the US back to the Dark Ages, rolling back our rights, changing EPA laws and, well, everything which is helpful for Americans. I guess they are trying to cull the herd! Talk about death panels.

This current administration is an abhorrent nightmare! I still cannot wrap my head around that fact that an illiterate, habitual lying, failed businessman, reality show carnival barker is our president. He's also a repulsive looking human, if you want to call him a human.

by Anonymousreply 340June 29, 2017 6:23 AM

"He's also a repulsive looking human"

Lmao! It is hard not to look at Trump and not be grossed out, I agree.

by Anonymousreply 342July 6, 2017 2:01 PM

I have stupid sisters who voted for Trump despite growing up in a blue collar Democratic household. They would all HATE Kamala Harris because she is capable, smart = everything they're not. So that kind of person will never vote for her.

by Anonymousreply 344July 6, 2017 2:13 PM

Sen. Dianne Feinstein (D-Calif.) is downplaying speculation that Sen. Kamala Harris (D-Calif.) could mount a 2020 White House run, saying her junior colleage "just got here."

Feinstein told The New York Times in an article about Harris's rise in the Democratic Party that her fellow California senator is “on the way to becoming a good friend of hers.”

“What she should do is concentrate on being a good, and possibly great, United States senator,” the senate veteran continued.

by Anonymousreply 357July 10, 2017 5:05 AM

i don't agree, r357. While she's definitely got an ego, she's smart and shrewd. She knows she cannot win at top of ticket. She patiently paid her dues during her rise in CA, she will not force things on a national stage. She's got two decades of public service to look forward to.

"Democratic rising star Kamala Harris has a “Bernieland” problem

----

Nomiki Konst, a Bernie Sanders supporter who serves on the Democratic National Committee’s Unity Commission had three words for Democrats interested in Harris as a candidate: “Follow the money.”

“The Democrats will not win until they address income inequality, no matter how they dress up their next candidate,” Konst said. “If that candidate is in bed with Wall Street, you may as well lay a tombstone out for the Democratic Party now. Voters are smart; they can follow the money.”

Konst’s skepticism about Harris’s alleged ties to Wall Street and insufficient commitment to populist economic issues reflect a broader trend among the residents of Bernieland. In a recent New York Times profile of Harris, another high profile Sanders supporter, executive director of National Nurses United RoseAnn DeMoro dismissed Harris’s prospects as a progressive 2020 contender, saying, “She’s not on our radar.”

“She’s one of the people the Democratic party is putting up,” DeMoro told the Times. “In terms of where the progressives live, I don’t think there’s any ‘there’ there.”

---

[bold]“If she wants to advance her political career, she will have to come out authentically and honestly in support of universal healthcare, free college, a federal $15 hour minimum wage, criminal justice reform and the expansion of social security programs,” Wong said. “Anything less than this means the party will continue to bleed voters.”[/bold]

[bold]Harris has already come out supporting all four of those policies in one form or another.[/bold] Whether or not that will be enough for her critics remains to be seen."

by Anonymousreply 364July 31, 2017 9:39 PM

Theoretically Kamala looks great. But I've heard a few of her speeches and she's charismatically challenged and comes off as aggressive and humorless. That could all be fixed with proper coaching.

Besides, this is the Social Media age, and the sexual hijinks that she and her sister engaged in to rise in politics would be harvested by Deplorable meme-meisters.

by Anonymousreply 398April 24, 2019 9:41 PM

If she wins the nom? Yes I will vote.

But I just want ANYONE to beat the idiot.

Biden, Pete, Kamala. Biden seems to be the likely winner. I love Pete more. They basically all agree on everything. So it's just who will moderates vote for. That's Biden.

by Anonymousreply 399April 24, 2019 9:48 PM

I like her. I also like Mayor Pete and Elizabeth Warren. I would be happy to have any one of them as a candidate.

by Anonymousreply 400April 24, 2019 10:07 PM

I just saw a clip of her talking today. She came across as very smug and entitled, talking in a very self satisfied tone about what she was going to do as President, as if she were already elected.

I hate that. Don’t count your chickens until they’re hatched. I don’t think any of the others have used that tone except Bernie. It’s not “I’m thinking positive” (Warren), it’s, “I assume you will vote for me.” Ask for their votes, don't assume them. Have some humility.

It’s like she doing a job interview for CEO and somebody told her if she acted arrogant the interviewer would like it. That’s a different job.

by Anonymousreply 401April 25, 2019 1:32 AM

First thing first, she should stop giggling at the end of every other sentence of hers; it makes her sounds like a teenage school girl. And she should have a voice coach to train her voice to be "more commanding and self-confident." I DMed her once on twitter, but not sue if she ever got it. I really like her and want her to win everything she competes.

by Anonymousreply 403April 25, 2019 1:47 AM

I thought I loved her, but her first major issues seem to be "reparations" whatever that might entail, and her belief that "black men in prison for selling pot should be the first allowed to sell it legally because they were 'ahead of the curve' "?

WTF is she talking about?

Is she trying to throw the race before it starts? These are almost ravings they're so unhelpful as primary issues to run for President!

by Anonymousreply 404April 25, 2019 2:00 AM

I liked her on CNN's democrats town hall special the other night--until she was one of that night's lineup who agreed that incarcerated felons should have the right to vote in our elections. I disagree with her on that view. Coming from her, a former prosecutor, I was surprised to hear her say that.

by Anonymousreply 405April 25, 2019 2:52 AM

It will be interesting to see what share of the white vote she gets. I want to bring up a point that perhaps her supporters are glossing over a bit: It's seems to be conventional wisdom that the American public is highly misogynistic, and reluctant to vote for a female candidate. Are we certain that black men voters are necessarily going to be all that thrilled with this sistah?

Moreover, no matter how white the electorate in Iowa and New Hampshire, she still won't get anywhere unless she could come in at least third or fourth in each of them.

by Anonymousreply 406April 25, 2019 3:06 AM

R405, I say let these idiots dig their own graves. They would lose nothing by saying people in prison shouldn't vote. Saying they're for it makes it a wedge issue for their opponents to use against them. If they're too stupid to realize that in this campaign they don't deserve to win office let alone become the nominee.

by Anonymousreply 407April 25, 2019 3:17 AM

She does need a voice coach. Her voice goes up and down and sounds overly girlish and emotional. She needs to sound more authoritative. She has a deep enough voice that she could, she’s just got bad vocal habits. Sometimes she sounds like a black high school girl kidding around with her black high school friends at the hairdresser. It’s like she wants to emphasize, I’m just one of the kids. Oh no you’re not, you’re running for President. Flatten it out.

She also spends a lot of time on issues that are mostly for the black community and will alienate non black voters, like voting in prison. That may be an applause line for an all black audience, but that’s really out of touch for a broad general audience.

I read a couple of days ago that she was concentrating on going to black colleges and focusing on black college women. Why does she need to do that? Afraid she can’t get that vote? Of course not, she just wants the one audience that is guaranteed to uncritically accept everything she says and shower her with worship. She’s got them already, go try to get white men or somebody she doesn’t already have in the bag. That’s a waste of time when she’s not doing great in a crowded field. That’s poor strategy.

But it might explain why black young women are attacking other candidates on twitter. That’s not an age group that’s known for having some discretion or caring about alienating other groups. If she’s going to whip young black women into a froth until they won’t vote for anyone else, it’s Berniebros all over again.

by Anonymousreply 408April 25, 2019 3:21 AM

It seems like her selling point to the black female community is, wouldn’t it be cool to have a black woman in the White House? Yes, wouldn’t it also be cool to have a white woman, a gay man, a cute guy from Texas, etc...

Her policies are all over the place: I’m a tough prosecutor, oh, you don’t like that, then I empathize with poor black people in prison, they’re so mistreated, oh, you point out I was throwing parents of truants in jail, well I think there are too many black people in jail...

by Anonymousreply 409April 25, 2019 3:28 AM

by Anonymousreply 414April 25, 2019 3:45 AM

by Anonymousreply 415April 25, 2019 3:47 AM

R405 Actually she said “we need to have a conversation about” allowing felons to vote. And she was in favor of “studying it” or some such nonsense. She refused to say she was for or against it, just kept squirming around the issue.

by Anonymousreply 416April 25, 2019 3:53 AM

I’d still love to see her in a debate with Dump though.

by Anonymousreply 417April 25, 2019 3:55 AM

On the other hand, she's fully confident about getting black voters in the South to support her strong lgbtqia support messages.

by Anonymousreply 418April 25, 2019 3:57 AM

You know, R418, why you say it like that, it almost seems like that strategy has some holes in it.

by Anonymousreply 419April 25, 2019 3:59 AM
Her policies are all over the place: I’m a tough prosecutor, oh, you don’t like that, then I empathize with poor black people in prison, they’re so mistreated, oh, you point out I was throwing parents of truants in jail, well I think there are too many black people in jail...

Complete mischaracterization. And if it seems that way it is only because we live in a soundbite culture with a collective deficit in critical thinking and analysis. She is the most consistent Democratic candidate in the field. As a prosecutor, she put people in prison because she believed that poor, underserved communities did not deserve to be terrorized by violent crime. She wanted to throw the parents of truants in jail because she did the research and made the connection between truancy and likelihood of future incarceration. She was marrying gay people in San Francisco long before marriage equality in CA or the U.S. Her record of leadership is long and conspicuous.

If you want an all-over-the-place, flip-flopper look to the old white dudes -- Biden and Sanders. If you want a candidate who can only speak to "values" and concepts of leadership -- look to Mayor Pete. If you want a candidate with lots of ideas and a long tenure as a lawmaker but no apparent accomplishments -- go with Warren or Beto. If you want a principled and effective leader with the demonstrable ability to execute on ideas, concepts and values, Harris is your candidate.

by Anonymousreply 420April 25, 2019 4:20 AM

"Kamala Harris wanted to put children behind bars instead of people like Steven Mnuchin."

The ads just write themselves.

by Anonymousreply 421April 25, 2019 4:32 AM

R420, if you are a dispassionate voter, looking only at facts, that might make sense.

But here is what black progressive voters are agitating for:

1. Reparations. 2. All black people in jail are being persecuted, let them all out. 3. If some black person has to be in jail, let them vote.

These are all extremely left wing ideas and no smart candidates are going to go for any of them, or even going to humor them or offer a watered down version of them, because you can’t win with those ideas in the general. Kamala is pandering to these people with watered down versions and taking back her own principles, which is a disaster. Many in the black community were badmouthing her for being a prosecutor a few weeks ago. That’s it, just a prosecutor who threw black criminals in jail. What was she supposed to do, let them all go? Her entire job description was lock them up. That’s what a prosecutor does. But they acted like she was a horrible person for having this good job.

Now she is acting spinelessly, flip flopping to cater to a radical minority. Any candidate with self confidence is going to say NO. Take it or leave it.

Can you see Biden kowtowing to those people? And people would accept his no, because they know he has a spine and they’re not getting everything they want. And I’m not even a Biden fan.

by Anonymousreply 422April 25, 2019 4:36 AM

Harris is actively selling out women and gays with her vocal support of the Equality Act. As a lawyer, she knows exactly what she's doing.

So either Harris is:

a) an idiot because women make up more than 50% of the US and there's no fucking way they're giving up their privacy and safety, AND athletics.

b) she hasn't read the Equality Act, and some blue-haired "Queer" staffer with a neck tattoo is tweeting on Harris's behalf, in which case Harris shouldn't hold office because she doesn't do her own homework on a piece of legislation that will cause massive chaos in this country

c) she really must have slept her way to the middle, because as a former prosecutor she knows that letting any man self-identify as a woman into spaces where women are naked is a recipe for trouble. See a)

Harris the diva cares about Harris. No small number of people in SF or Sacramento did not think well of her on a personal level.

All she's ever cared about and focused on: her next promotion.

Her office is a messy joke, laughably bad when it comes to constituent services.

I'm in the bluest of blue states so my vote for President (and damn near everything else) in 11/20 is irrelevant, but there is zero chance my primary vote goes to Harris, an insipid, duplicitous clown.

by Anonymousreply 426April 25, 2019 5:01 AM

That’s another problem: a lot of these candidates are new and don’t have a lot of nationwide recognition, so if people back home think they’re awful, the rest of the country doesn’t know it. Yet.

Kamala Harris Tweeted about the Equality Act today, R425.

You know, the same Equality Act that will destroy the rights of gays and women. Harris wholeheartedly supports it because "Transgenders"

So you and your homophobic, misogynistic, trans buddies can fuck off, R425 -

Kamala Harris:
Targeting transgender Americans because of who they are is discriminatory. I'll say it again: these ruthless attacks by the Administration against the LGBTQ community is precisely why we must pass the #EqualityAct.

Flips flop.

She’s a cunt.

by Anonymousreply 429April 25, 2019 5:42 AM

It's all good. Clearly, she's "black enough" to provoke the collective wrath of Datalounge -- so there's a excellent chance she's black enough to get Obama's avalanche of black and progressive votes. Fingers crossed.

by Anonymousreply 430April 25, 2019 2:48 PM

Pander, pander, and more pander. And that condescending voice! UGH and YUCK.

by Anonymousreply 431April 25, 2019 2:57 PM

Obama had broad appeal, because he did not continually bring up issues that were solely of interest to the black community, and controversial to everyone else. He would not talk about being the first black President when asked. He spoke over and over about representing everyone and was very inclusive. So everyone liked him.

Kamala is presenting as a niche candidate. Look what I can do for the black community. That’s what you do when you run for local office. Senate is about as far as you can go with that, because you represent one district. When you get to governor or President, that doesn’t work because the majority of voters aren’t black.

The first two states in the primary are over 90% white. Obama won Iowa. That’s what made him electable, that people saw he could win a state with a huge white population. Leading with black issues is not going to get you through Iowa.

Iowa is 90.9% Caucasian, 3.3% African American, 2.1% Asian, 1.3% other race, 2% two races, and .4% Natives of North America. 77% Christian.

The racial makeup of New Hampshire as of the 2010 Census was: White: 93.9% (92.3% non-Hispanic) Black or African American: 1.1% American Indian and Alaska Native: 0.2%

If you don’t get votes in those two states you’re done. Obama had a strategy to win these voters, Kamala doesn’t.

Kamala, Amy, Beto, Liz, Bernie, Cory, Julian, Tulsi all showed up at She The People forum yesterday in Houston, run by WoC.

Kamala did OK, got a lot of warmth as a WoC from the audience but it was no slam-dunk. Liz Warren worked the crowd the best, then Beto. Bernie got boos and groans for his inept answers to questions. He didn't answer questions - he would just recycle bits of his stump speech. Tulsi said "there are bad people in the world" and somebody in the audience shouted out "like you" and got applause!

General consensus: 1) Liz 2) Beto 3) Kamala and meh (Amy, Cory, Julian) and no way: Bernie and Tulsi.

Women of color are the most reliable Dem voting bloc so this is going to be influential. Bernie's dead in the water as far as WoC are concerned.

by Anonymousreply 433April 25, 2019 3:18 PM

At the CNN Town Hall when Kamala was asked about her support for Medicare for All, it became obvious she was unaware that M4All will get rid of private health insurance. Don Lemon had to correct her.

If she doesn't know the issues better than that, she needs to start doing her homework. That was shocking.

R433, Bernie Sanders is a solid number two in polls and I even saw him as number one in a poll. So are the black voters not affecting those polls?

I hate Sanders with the heat of a thousand suns, he’s the left wing Trump to me. But the way our system works is the early primary states are vast majority white. The black voters don’t really have much to say until South Carolina February 29. Iowa, New Hampshire and Nevada have already gone by then. You’ve already got your front runner.

Right now, CNN is playing Kamala saying, “I’ve spent my entire life focusing on women of color,” at that campaign event yesterday. I can just see the campaign ads the Republicans are going to make out of that.

She’s campaigning in black colleges in South Carolina. Does she think she is too weak to get the early white majority states, so why bother, or she is looking to support her campaign on young black Southern votes and money? Both strategies aren’t going to work. A lot of southern black voters live in red states and may be enthusiastic but are not the majority.

She needs to be raising money and appealing to the early primary voters right now. Less than 4% of New Hampshire voters are black.

Obama was too smart for that. So was JFK, who was the first Catholic President, he made a point of telling people the Pope wasn’t going to tell him what to do. Obama made a point of saying he was going to be the President of everyone, and toned down the first black President stuff. Of course others said it, but he never did. He won Iowa.

If Obama had said, I’m running to be the first black President, “I’ve spent my entire life focusing on people of color,” and campaigned in black colleges in South Carolina, he’d still be Senator Obama. That would have made him sound like a black activist, not a broad appeal candidate.

You can’t win pandering to one minority. You have to spend some time building a broad base, especially if you want money.

I guess she has some sort of a strategy that it doesn't matter how well she does in Iowa and New Hampshire. Moreover, she is probably working under the assumption that she's going to do very well in California, which it's not necessarily a given for her.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again now, that I feel the white share of the vote in the South next year in Democratic primaries will be significantly higher than conventional wisdom estimates. She will have to find a way of reconciling her very strong Pro-LGBTQAI+ stands among not-so-progressive black voters, who may have their doubts about a single no-kids liberal lady from California. Being as white as it gets I'm no expert - does Indian-Jamaican count as "black" enough for U. S. slave descendants?

by Anonymousreply 438April 25, 2019 5:24 PM
Obama had broad appeal, because he did not continually bring up issues that were solely of interest to the black community, and controversial to everyone else. He would not talk about being the first black President when asked. He spoke over and over about representing everyone and was very inclusive. So everyone liked him.

No. Everyone did not like him. Many hated him. The lesson to be learned from the Obama years is that a black person can never be 'less' black. Obama was obstructed, derided and disrespected by his colleagues and the Tea Party nutjobs -- accused of things he never said or did, and had beliefs ascribed to him that he never espoused and in some cases expressly denied. The trick with being black is it is a status that some people will find objectionable no matter the content of your character, who you are or what you say or do. Harris understands it is better to be exactly who she is and be hated than to compromise herself and cultivate a false image and still be hated.

by Anonymousreply 439April 25, 2019 5:25 PM

Trump will get everyone who voted for him in 2016. Harris needs to get everyone who voted for HRC in 2016 and the black people in MI, PA and OH who did not. That is her strategy.

by Anonymousreply 440April 25, 2019 5:31 PM

R440, you're talking abou the general. We're talking about the primaries.

by Anonymousreply 441April 25, 2019 5:34 PM

She also needs to get some of the white people in those states as well, R440. You can’t win by writing off white rust belt or midwestern voters. As Hillary discovered.

R439 also is talking about the general. There are no Tea Partiers in the Democratic Party. Of course they didn’t like Obama. They didn’t like any Democrat. Democrats obviously liked him because he was elected twice.

by Anonymousreply 442April 25, 2019 5:37 PM

I know establishment Democrats really dislike open primary states, but such is the case with Michigan, Ohio, and Wisconsin. Pennsylvania still has a fair number of more conservative voters enrolled as closed primary Democrats.

She's trying some sort of balancing act that just is not possible to sustain.

by Anonymousreply 443April 25, 2019 5:43 PM

R438, there’s a lot of money in California and it looks like all the candidates are going there, and at this time people are looking at a lot of different candidates. So she’s not guaranteed to get the majority of votes or money there. She’s not really the only frontrunner there. Even if she does well there she can’t put all her eggs in one basket and win.

I agree there will be high white Deplorable turnout, especially in more conservative states. A candidate that can’t get some white votes, and hopefully turn some redneck Trump voters away from Trump, based on his immorality and lack of religious conformity, isn’t going anywhere. This isn’t the year of the black voter, it’s the year of the redneck voter. They got him in and they can get him out.

Rednecks are often, but not always, Republicans. And they vote for Christians for high office.

I don’t know if Mayor Pete can overcome the anti-gay vote, maybe not, but his story of a boring, Christian, married guy with a one eyed dog appeals to that voter. Find a straight white guy with that story and he’d have a good chance to flip some votes. Maybe he can anyway, hard to say.

Franklin Graham attacked Buttigieg about his sexuality today. Franklin Graham is a friend of Trump. So maybe it will be vetted sooner than later and we can see how it goes.

by Anonymousreply 444April 25, 2019 5:56 PM

I think she sees California as the linchpin in her strategy. As others have said, I don't think it's a given for her.

by Anonymousreply 445April 25, 2019 5:59 PM

If it is, she’s counting on California too much. She should run for Governor.

She seems not to have an understanding of the motivations of the people that do all the voting in other states. Often more conservative than California, often white or Latino. A lot of solid Democratic voters in states Democrats can win are white working class. A lot of enthusiastic black voters are in red states we can’t win. So she needs to focus on blue states, and winning whoever lives there. Not focus on voters in red states that aren’t winnable.

by Anonymousreply 446April 25, 2019 6:08 PM

This is not realistic. Deplorables have not budged in their support of Trump. The only boast that Trump made that was accurate is that he could shoot someone and not lose their support. He is right. The loser will be the Democrat who dilutes the Democratic message and values because s/he wants to win over disenchanted Deplorables. Deplorables do not get disenchanted, they got everything they wanted: discord and chaos.

The 2018 mid-terms -- and Gillum and Abrams near-victories in deep-red states -- do not suggest that 2020 will be the "year of the redneck voter."

Biden's VP. Probably a winning ticket.

by Anonymousreply 449April 25, 2019 6:17 PM

I had strong hopes for her, but the more I learned the more I realize that currently she doesn't have a great place that she fits in the race unless you are center-right. POC have issues with her prosecution history, lefties are no fan of her alliance with AIPAC, and she doesn't seem to have clear policies she is running on since she "wants to have the conversation".

I would likely support anyone except Gabbard, but Kamala has some work to do to bridge these divides.

by Anonymousreply 450April 25, 2019 6:27 PM
A lot of enthusiastic black voters are in red states we can’t win.

That's true for the general election. However, several Confederate states (AL, MS, etc.) are so polarized that most of the Democratic primary voters are black.

by Anonymousreply 451April 25, 2019 6:31 PM

R447, there’s two different kinds of Trump voter: dyed in the wool cultists, and generic Republicans just voting for the nominee. A lot of the latter are turned off on Trump now.

When they talk about Trump having 80% approval now, they’re talking about cultists. A lot of non-cultists have left the party and are now Independents. A majority of independents are now conservative.

They’re swing voters, but often low information voters and vote on personality or non policy reasons. In the past, Independents have traditionally said I don’t vote for the party, I vote for the person, but that’s not exactly who these former Republican people are.

They are Republicans that don’t like Trump, but since Trump will be the nominee, they’re probably at least going to look at third party or Democratic candidates that share at least some of their values and are likable. They vote for who they want to have a beer with.

They know they don’t want to have a beer with Trump. But is someone they do like available? If not, they will probably plug their nose and vote Trump. Some of them are gettable.

At the SheThePeople Forum yesterday in Houston, logically Kamala should have been the absolute star - after all, she's the only woman of color running. She got polite applause, muted enthusiasm, a dutiful standing ovation but she didn't set the house on fire. Liz Warren and Beto O'Rourke did. If she can't compete with them in a house full of women of color, she's in trouble.

by Anonymousreply 459April 26, 2019 1:01 AM

I like her. She's smart. I hate "the smug" stuff. It's not her fault she's so smart. But, it sucks when moderates, of which I am not, hate it. I've said this many times. I don't think she connects.

by Anonymousreply 460April 26, 2019 1:19 AM

She doesn't connect with me. Give me Mayor Pete or Senator Liz any time. She is phony and arrogant. I like people with enthusiasm and real passion and knowledge, not someone who wants to show off how "tough" she is in a senate hearing ("Answer yes or no." It is I, Kamala the Queen speaking--really turned me off.) And I'm not a racist--I love Stacey Abrams. Obama was extremely likable. Kamala Harris is unlikable. Likability is why George W. won. Trump won because Russians skewed votes (77,000) in 3 states and Hillary Clinton was not likable. I don't see her winning the primary.

by Anonymousreply 461April 26, 2019 1:53 AM

Over rated as a legal mind. Excellent politician.

by Anonymousreply 462April 26, 2019 1:55 AM

Perhaps she's excellent at political maneuvering, but I wouldn't say that she's a naturally attractive politician.

I felt Liz did quite well the other day. As far as my racist tendencies go, I think Stacey is someone that just plain regular white folk would soon learn to see as one of their own.

by Anonymousreply 463April 26, 2019 2:47 AM
Likability is why George W. won. Trump won because Russians skewed votes (77,000) in 3 states and Hillary Clinton was not likable.

GWB won because the supreme court decided to stop counting votes. If they had been counted Gore would have won.

Hillary won but the election was stolen, not 'skewed'. Exit polls in those 3 precincts had hillary winning. There is just no way that the precise # of people would lie to pollers in order to throw the election. The only explanation is that democratic votes were tossed.

by Anonymousreply 464April 26, 2019 2:53 AM

It's crazy to think Kamala is a good candidate....she has zero warmth and there's no way she can fake it now. She comes across as exactly what she was....a ball busting attorney.

by Anonymousreply 465April 26, 2019 3:01 AM

Tulsi is the only one who can actually beat Trump.
She is phony and arrogant. I like people with enthusiasm and real passion and knowledge, not someone who wants to show off how "tough" she is in a senate hearing ("Answer yes or no." It is I, Kamala the Queen speaking--really turned me off.)

For many of you she has the dual curse of being black and a woman. She is NOT phony. She is exactly who you see and dislike. Her only flaw is that as a candidate she cannot be as plainspoken and direct as she is accustomed to being in her professional life. She would scare the snowflakes and offend everyone who is not a black woman. Harris need not pretend to be humble or gracious when someone is f*cking with her in a Senate committee hearing. She is not soft or warm or ingratiating because it does not advantage her when the natural tendency of the majority culture is to dismiss and diminish her because she is black -- and a "her." Or they mock her as phony and arrogant. She will not win them with honey, so she must knock them the f*ck out. I am not at all disturbed that she did not get a rousing reaction at a WOC event, she is not auditioning for Real Housewives of Atlanta. She is exactly who we need in the White House -- a smart, focused determined woman of color who will challenge and unsettle everyone AND get results.

by Anonymousreply 467April 26, 2019 3:43 AM

R467 At the CNN Town Hall, she didn't actually know what was in Medicare For All that she had happily signed onto. If Don Lemon has to explain an issue to you, you're not up to it.

by Anonymousreply 468April 26, 2019 4:24 AM

I'd love to see her debate Trump.

by Anonymousreply 469April 26, 2019 4:27 AM

Anybody on the planet can beat Trump at a debate - Hillary certainly did. It'll come down to optics on stage. Kamala's even shorter than Hillary is. The tallest candidate almost invariably wins. Trump's maybe 6' now. My money would be on Beto. He's 6'5".

by Anonymousreply 470April 26, 2019 4:34 AM

the online poll rigging that Trump paid Cohen to pay someone to do really fucked with the election. Post-debate online polls shouldn't matter but a lot of people are like sheep and think they have to follow them. I remember how clearly Hillary whooped Trump all 3 times. Kaine also destroyed Pence but the post-debate polls showed Pence as winning. Now we know those were bogus but unfortunately it will happen again this time around

Kamala is a very smart woman. I like her. I want to see her as either President or Vice President in 2021

by Anonymousreply 471April 26, 2019 4:38 AM

R468, there are many conceptual iterations of the mythic non-starter "medicare-for-all." Harris was one of the first candidates to expressly commit to it and her idea was to have it alongside private insurance. I still have no idea what Don Lemon was referring to and neither does he. You can't hold that nonsense against Harris.

I'll tell you a secret -- private insurance is not going anywhere. It will survive The Rapture.

by Anonymousreply 472April 26, 2019 4:46 AM

R467, if Kamala is not phony and her natural personality is acting like a ball-buster that reminds most men of their angry ex-wife bitching about the child support payments, that’s a good personality if you’re a prosecutor.

Presidents don’t need to be known as a bitch with a stick up her ass. There’s just nothing in the job description that requires that. That’s like Melania Trump’s personality, and everyone hates her.

by Anonymousreply 473April 26, 2019 4:46 AM

Online polls are bogus. Exit polls are not bogus. They have been a reliable indicator for the legitimacy of elections. Until recently, at least in the US. It's interesting how the media has conflated the types of polls, and when exit polls are wrong, instead of investigating possible election chicanery (which ALWAYS benefits republicans) they turn the story into how unreliable polls are. It is corrosive to democracy to undermine exit polls.

by Anonymousreply 474April 26, 2019 4:47 AM

R473, your commentary is informed by misogyny. A man with the characteristics you ascribe to Harris would not be objectionable. I reject it.

by Anonymousreply 475April 26, 2019 5:06 AM

What are you going to do, R475? Men react differently to women. That may be unfair, but they’re voting in the privacy of the voting booth.

It’s like people on Grindr that get mad because they’re trans and nobody wants them. You can’t choose what other people find attractive. Being offended is irrelevant. You’re basically in a meat market and people either pick you or not. You have no say in it. Running for office, if anything, is even more harsh.

by Anonymousreply 476April 26, 2019 5:14 AM

I reject your cynicism, r476. I don't care what the hypothetical (white) man thinks of Harris. I support Harris. I will vote for the Democratic candidate in 2020. I sincerely hope it is Harris. She is my choice.

by Anonymousreply 477April 26, 2019 5:19 AM

You are not the only person in the country whose votes is counted, R477. And this discussion is not about your personal vote.

by Anonymousreply 478April 26, 2019 5:23 AM

R478, I think you've misunderstood my post(s) and/or this entire discussion. I am keenly aware that I alone will not determine who will be President. And, in fact, this discussion IS about personal opinions about Harris -- mine included -- and by extension how we will vote in the Democratic primary.

by Anonymousreply 479April 26, 2019 5:50 AM

So why do you think that other people who are a larger voting bloc can just be dismissed?

We got lucky with Obama. I don’t know why people stuck their neck out on this unknown guy, but I’m guessing a lot of it had to do with the financial crash that started right before the election and McCain muffed the way he handled it. He sounded like he was scared and didn’t know what to do. Obama sounded like he did. Also Palin was obviously an idiot and McCain had health problems in the past. So she scared people. People realized they were looking down the throat of a horrible crash and we couldn’t see how bad, but we knew it was bad. So, better the calm guy than the freaked out guy. But I still think Hillary wouldn’t have done as well in that situation because Obama was a man and in times of trouble, a lot of people want a take-charge man.

So here we are. Again looking down the throat of god knows what. Recession, debt, Putin, you name it. Trump fucked up everything. People want Daddy to save them. So who is that? They’re looking again for Calm Guy. That’s my guess of the person that has the best chance. They are not looking for Black Guy, Woman Guy, or even White Guy. They’re looking for, Don't Worry, Daddy’s Coming to Save You Guy. So far I don’t think there’s a lot of that and people’s hope Biden will be that person shows a softness in the field. I don’t think he will be able to pull it off as time goes by.

by Anonymousreply 480April 26, 2019 7:26 AM

R480, you are describing some subset of white voters. Many of whom were malicious enough to vote for Trump. The rest of us are not offended by women, or people of color. I hope I am not expected to care about Trump voters and what they think or feel. Because I don't. You will never persuade me otherwise.

Harris is the "man" for the job. She is the best candidate to repair the catastrophic injury Trump and his supporters have visited upon the American psyche. We need her. Day one she will start stacking the Supreme Court. I will sleep easier at night with her at the helm. I will enthusiastically support her as long as she's in the race.

by Anonymousreply 481April 26, 2019 12:53 PM

No one is going to get elected who plays their card - begin a woman, black, gay whatever. I don't believe Obama made a big deal of his race during the election. Anyone who votes solely for someone because they are a woman, black or gay should lose their right to vote. The next president is going to be elected on their likability, reliability and for their policies.

Trump played the white nationalist card and it was spectacularly successful for him. He is not likable or reliable. He has only supported failed, destructive policies. He is a self-serving oaf. And yet he won in 2016 and is a contender in 2020. Should white people who supported Trump lose their right to vote?

by Anonymousreply 484April 26, 2019 2:03 PM

People who voted for Trump are mostly Republicans, and these primaries are about Democrats. The criteria is different. It’s like blaming all whites for Hitler.

I haven’t heard anything about Harris to make me feel she’s better than anyone else in the pack. She’s leading with, I’m black, I care about black issues and I understand what black voters want me to do for the black community in particular. That’s such a small percentage of voters she’s eliminating herself. Even some blacks are not going to be satisfied with that, and nobody else is.

All white Democratic voters did not go away because Trump is a racist. All whites aren’t racist because Trump is a racist. He’s one guy. Anyone who thinks they don’t need to court people outside one minority interest group, because they want to take out their anger about Trump on people that voted against him, isn’t getting a majority. I’m not talking about Kamala herself here, I’m talking about Kamala fans that want to push her to pander to such an extreme few, that she will alienate non-black voters. And she is so insecure, she will just look for her core group’s approval and not try to expand her base. That need to appease people, instead of leading them to follow you, is going to be taken as a womanly submissive trait and alienate even more. Grow a spine. Concentrate on winning, not fluffing up the base. Which is Trumpian, ironically.

There are too many supporters of all these candidates who like one person and can’t understand, if my candidate is pandering to a few (BernieBros), that’s not enough to get him or her elected. It never has been. We are not looking at President Bernie’s second term here.

In 2016, Trump had a broader appeal than today. Many people didn’t know what a shit he was. He hadn’t done all these hateful racist things he’s done now. Forget about Mueller, he’s made himself much more unlikable than he was to low information voters before. His hard core of supporters have been slowly radicalized by him. Everyone else is turned off. A lot of votes are on the table that weren’t before. All this SJW crap is just going to turn swing voters away. “It’s my turn” isn’t a political argument and never has been. The country is too big and diverse for that.

by Anonymousreply 485April 26, 2019 3:06 PM

Harris is a U.S. Senator. A former California Attorney General and SF District Attorney. She has a three-decade track record of working for ALL people. Yet some of you can only see her color and based thereon assume she is "pandering" to someone. Do white voters truly lack the discernment to consider her actual track record as a civil servant? The speed at which the criticism of her in this conversation has pivoted from her being "not black enough" to being "too black" is disheartening. It seems that non-blacks look at blacks and only see them as black. What can she do to get the vote of someone who will only ever see her as black and other?

Obama was a once-in-a-generation politician. Being black wasn't central to his appeal. Kamala is no Obama, hell she's no Hillary either. She doesn't excite anybody but Republicans.

by Anonymousreply 487April 26, 2019 3:25 PM
The country is too big and diverse for that.

I don't know. The white nationalist Trumpkins certainly took "it's my turn" to heart. "Build The Wall!" isn't exactly the rallying cry of a nation too diverse for tribal politics.

I'm not saying I agree with the ideology. Just that the basis of your criticism of Harris is flawed.
Obama was a once-in-a-generation politician. Being black wasn't central to his appeal.

You cannot be serious.

by Anonymousreply 489April 26, 2019 3:35 PM

Trump’s voters are Republicans. A lot of Democratic voters stayed home because they didn’t like Hillary. If all the Obama voters had showed up she would have won. A significant number of black voters did not want to vote for the white lady. Now they’re blaming Trump’s election on anything but their lack of voting. Like on white Democrats who did show up and did vote against him.

For a start, Kamala can stop “thinking about” giving the vote to violent felons in prison. That is 100% pandering to black voters, and it scares people. Including older blacks who vote. Anybody with any experience of living in a crime filled neighborhood, or knowing violent felons, does not think violent crazy people voting to let themselves out of prison is a good idea. Imagine you’re some black grandma living in a crime filled neighborhood. Do you want criminals to have more voting power than you do? Want politicians pandering to them and proposing laws to get their vote? No.

Bernie does this too, but Bernie supporters are cultists like Trump’s. If Bernie said, let’s all worship Satan, they would do it. He doesn’t need to make that statement and it wouldn’t change their vote. Bernie is a narcissist and doesn’t care how his policies affect people outside his group. Neither do they. Which is why he isn’t President.

In Kamala’s case, it comes across as, I’m black and I’m promoting something the vast majority hate because blacks want it. That’s political suicide.

R489, Obama won Iowa, which is over 90% white. It’s around 3% black. If he hadn’t, he would have been out and Hillary would have been the nominee. He would have proved he couldn’t get enough white votes to prevail. White people did not vote for Obama solely on his skin color. Some blacks did, but he would have washed out long before he got to black states if not for large numbers of white supporters.

by Anonymousreply 490April 26, 2019 3:40 PM

R488, if you’re going to assume tribal politics are a winning strategy, the U.S. is 72.4% white. It’s 12.6% black. In tribal politics, which tribe is always going to win?

Blacks cannot play that game.

by Anonymousreply 491April 26, 2019 3:42 PM

I'd like to point out that if American voters are notoriously misogynistic, why is it assumed that black male voters will be all over this woman? How comfortable would these pastors and their flocks who supposedly vote in unison be with a candidate from San Francisco who proclaims very liberal social policy issues?

I wouldn't count Liz out yet, based on the reception she got at the recent confrence of black women.

by Anonymousreply 492April 26, 2019 4:01 PM

R486, I'm going to borrow some language from the SJW movement for this post.

Your job right now is to be quiet and listen to what liberal, Democratic voters - who voted for Obama and Hillary - on a gay message board are saying about Kamala right now. You have an implicit bias for Kamala, maybe because she's a woman, maybe because she's a POC, maybe because she's both, but it's obviously there. And you have an implicit bias against white people, probably men for the most part, who don't agree with you. Here some of her stances on issues that have generated headlines: she's for legalizing prostitution, she's in favor of or is open to reparations, and she's in favor of changing Columbus Day to Indigenous Peoples' Day. The fact that you can't see how off putting that will be to a large swath of the electorate shows how blinded you are by your own biases.

by Anonymousreply 493April 26, 2019 4:06 PM

While 12.4% of the population is black, it doesn’t mean they will all vote for the Democratic nominee.

College educated voters may vote for SJW issues, but a lot of black voters are uneducated and they are interested in job security and higher paying jobs going into the future, in an economy that is becoming increasingly mechanized. Low skill jobs are being eliminated and that is a trend that will continue.

A lot of these voters are competing head to head with illegal and legal Mexican immigrants. They have taken over maid service in the hotel industry. That may not seem like a great job to you, but in good hotels, there are good tips and they can make a decent living. It’s also a job that cant be completely mechanized for a long time. Mexicans have also largely taken over construction and are a substantial presence in a lot of trades. These are traditionally union jobs with good pay and benefits that have a large percentage of blacks. American carpenters have lost a lot of cost of living raises because of Mexicans undercutting them. Same with janitorial and a lot of other unskilled jobs.

If you’re struggling to put food on the table and are a low information, or one issue voter, Trump may sound pretty good. He’s promising to get rid of your competition and that may raise your wage. That may matter more than anything else if you’ve got kids to feed.

And if black voters are only going to turn out full strength for black candidates, they’re weakening their bargaining power in the Democratic Party. Every election may have a black primary candidate, but not necessarily a nominee. Blacks became a voting powerhouse in the Obama era, and Democratic leaders wanted to court their reliable vote. They already showed themselves not to turn out in equal numbers for Hillary.

If they do that again this time, even against Trump, because the nominee is not black, they are going to start to be thought of like Latino and young voters, a big minority that doesn’t reliably show up. And politicians don’t cater to people that don’t vote.

College students get the same brush off, because they don’t vote. And Latino voters historically have a very low turnout. Puerto Ricans historically have a very low turnout in Florida, for example. Do you see Trump helping Puerto Rico?

The value of the black voting bloc is their very high percentage of participation. If they start boycotting every election that doesn’t have a black nominee, nobody’s going to listen to them.

by Anonymousreply 494April 26, 2019 4:54 PM

We're just repeating ourselves at this point. There is an explicit bias in this thread against Harris because she is smug, she panders, she's niche, she's arrogant, she lacks warmth, she's too liberal, she's not liberal enough, she's just for blacks, blacks won't like her, etc. I read it as being told that a black woman cannot have cross-cultural appeal unless she focuses exclusively on the issues of voters who are most disinclined to vote for her. That is a losing strategy.

All of the Democratic candidates are running on essentially the same platform with similar ideas. In fact, Harris has what should be an advantage -- an actual record that should have broad cross-cultural appeal. But we understand and acknowledge that there is a bias against her as a black woman. DL wisdom is that as a black woman she has so many aesthetic and personal deficits that she should be working hard to refashion herself to be more palatable to voters who are offended by the mere presence of a black women. She won't do it. Harris will solidify her base and worry about the rest in due course.

by Anonymousreply 495April 26, 2019 5:50 PM

R495, this is what it comes down to: You can't see past the color and sex of people who disagree with you.

by Anonymousreply 496April 26, 2019 5:56 PM

I cannot "see" the color or sex of anyone posting at this forum. However, I have inferred from their comments that they are hostile to Harris because she is a black woman.

by Anonymousreply 497April 26, 2019 6:11 PM

I’m hostile to her because she sounds arrogant and entitled. Also she has the spine of an eel and is afraid of her own supporters leaving her if she tells them them she needs broad appeal.

You don’t have to be black or a woman for any of those things to apply. But some people won’t vote for black women on top of all that and you can’t ignore that either. It’s basically a popularity contest.

by Anonymousreply 498April 26, 2019 6:24 PM

R497 - sometimes it has nothing to do with gender and race. Are we not allowed to like someone who is a woman or a minority?

by Anonymousreply 499April 26, 2019 6:59 PM

Blacks are the majority in the USA. Blacks commit 52% of the crime, and we know it's racist to suggest that blacks are more violent, so therefore blacks must be 52% of the population.

Will Kamala get support from Hispanics? I doubt it. Don't know about California but in Texas African Americans and Hispanics aren't exactly allies.

by Anonymousreply 501April 26, 2019 9:27 PM

Joy Reid raved about Liz Warren at the WoC forum in Houston. Her comments on Kamala were muted. I don't even think Kamala's got the support of black women.

by Anonymousreply 502April 26, 2019 9:42 PM

She's articulate, experienced, and a fighter.

by Anonymousreply 503April 26, 2019 9:46 PM

Kamala or Liz, R503?

by Anonymousreply 504April 26, 2019 11:08 PM

LOL...a protester just casually took the microphone away from her

I think Kamala's going to - for the time being - lose girl's pole position to Warren. But Warren has moved so far to the left, she couldn't possibly be elected in a general election. Kamala's hedging her bets which is smart.

by Anonymousreply 506June 2, 2019 2:03 AM

When she was the attorney general, her staff referred to her as HRH KH. From the Willie Brown school do politics. Maybe that attitude will be good for the country.

by Anonymousreply 507June 2, 2019 3:18 AM

R505, is that her real hair, or a wig?

by Anonymousreply 508June 2, 2019 4:39 AM

I seriously LOL'd at the clip. She sees danger coming her way and all she can do is give up her mic before the guy even gets to her.

She's so incredibly terrible off-script.

by Anonymousreply 509June 2, 2019 4:43 AM

I somehow am uncomfortable with Warren, she back stabbed democrats when she said the primaries were rigged. I like her policies, but I have a problem with her.

by Anonymousreply 510June 2, 2019 4:57 AM
I seriously LOL'd at the clip. She sees danger coming her way and all she can do is give up her mic before the guy even gets to her.

What a stupid observation. She is a petite woman. A large, wild-eyed crazy man lunged for the mic so she gave it to him and got out of his way, she did EXACTLY what she was supposed to do.

by Anonymousreply 511June 2, 2019 6:16 AM

Unsuitable, inappropriate.

R511, yes, letting someone she sees as dangerous get his way is exactly what we need from a President. You're one clueless woman defending another clueless woman.

by Anonymousreply 513June 2, 2019 6:26 AM

Cunt

Disingenuous

Fake

Shallow Bitch

I think those some her up pretty well.

by Anonymousreply 514June 2, 2019 8:55 AM

R513, I am not a woman. But you are obviously a gay shut-in who is titillated by rape and assault sexual fantasies Clearly, you do not understand, and don't care to understand, the physical danger that Senator Harris, and women generally, must confront, think about and learn to avoid everyday. You seem to be suggesting that she should have fought or struggled with a lunatic twice her size. You're a misogynist AND an imbecile.

by Anonymousreply 515June 2, 2019 6:56 PM

R515, this post gives you away. You are not a woman. You're a liar. Next time you deny being a woman, try to figure out things that men, gay or straight, do and don't say so you can be believable next time.

by Anonymousreply 516June 2, 2019 11:05 PM

^^ I meant to say You ARE a woma

by Anonymousreply 517June 2, 2019 11:18 PM

It's a shame she's a woman.

by Anonymousreply 518June 2, 2019 11:19 PM

I'll vote for her if she runs in my state's primaries and I'll vote for her if she wins the nomination. I think she's perfect and just what we need.

by Anonymousreply 519June 2, 2019 11:21 PM

R518, your snark doesn't make any sense because most DLers voted for Hillary.

by Anonymousreply 520June 2, 2019 11:30 PM

I'd vote for her if I had to. I'd prefer anybody in the top tier except Bernie. She benefits from her good looks and being biracial and non-white. Otherwise she'd be at the bottom of the pack. I'd prefer anybody who can beat Trump but especially Pete B. and Liz Warren. And if possible Stacey Abrams as VP with Pete or Liz as Pres, but I imagine it's going to be Biden. I'm not racist or anti-woman (I am a woman). Just don't like Kamala, who is my senator BTW and I voted for her. I think she should stay in the Senate.

by Anonymousreply 521June 2, 2019 11:30 PM

Kamala will have to settle for being picked for a position, not elected, if this wants to be part of this administration. She will not be the nominee.

by Anonymousreply 522June 2, 2019 11:33 PM

I think Kamala was way too overpromoted. She isn't really very impressive - she sure as hell is no Obama. She couldn't live up to the hype. She could be VP but I don't see her being able to carry any purple states the Dem nominee will need to carry to win.

by Anonymousreply 523June 3, 2019 5:00 PM

Kamala i s AMAZING. Love everything about her actually. This is not likely her year as POTUS, but she will be very soon. AG is an obvious choice. Adore her in every way..
