Woody Allen surprises Diane Keaton at AFI Lifetime Achievement ceremony

Wow he really must still hold a torch for her it's true. I can't believe Pacino showed up - she always said that was her one ex she wasn't on speaking terms with.
Usually there are at least a couple headscratching no shows at these things, so really she must be very beloved. I don't think she's made any real enemies.
Definitely recording this - though I really wish she had not chosen to sing.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | June 9, 2017 10:25 AM |
Re her advice to Al Pacino: I don't believe him. Back when The Godfather was made, entertainers did not call themselves "artists". I believe Madonna started that baloney.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | June 9, 2017 11:04 AM |
Has Mia tweeted a statement?
by Anonymous | reply 3 | June 9, 2017 11:40 AM |
I don't know how people stay friends with him. Professionally I get that you sometimes have to work with people you find distasteful, but on a personal level?
It isn't like he met her when she was 18. He knew her since she was 9 years old and acted as a father figure. Something is seriously wrong with that man.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | June 9, 2017 12:02 PM |
Allen's toast was as on point as he's ever been.
"I tell [Diane] that there’s nothing to worry about [death]. If you’ve ever had a colonoscopy they give you an injection and you’re out. And it’s black and peaceful, and nice. And so death is like a colonoscopy. The problem is life is like the prep day."
by Anonymous | reply 5 | June 9, 2017 5:33 PM |
Is the rumour true that Diane Keaton was a goldstar lez before meeting Woody Allen?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | June 9, 2017 5:35 PM |
There was a BI a while back about an actress publicly supporting a director accused of sexual misconduct while privately making sure to never leave him alone with her daughter.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | June 9, 2017 5:38 PM |
Nicholson wasn't there? I thought they were buddies.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | June 9, 2017 5:41 PM |
Back when The Godfather was made, entertainers did not call themselves "artists". I believe Madonna started that baloney.
'Artist' can simply be a synonym of 'performer.' As in: "the following artists will be performing tonight...."
[bold]Sarah Silverman[/bold] compared Keaton to tennis great Billie Jean King. “Diane didn’t want to be an icon,” she said. “She wanted to be a great tennis player. She failed, but she tried.”
This person is a comedienne?
Talking about her confidence and style, Silverman added: “She’s an unparalleled force. She is so go—- cool. It takes an extraordinary level of confidence to rock hats; also a well-shaped head.”

Nicholson is shooting the Toni Erdmann remake.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | June 9, 2017 8:34 PM |
Say what you will about W Allen; he happens to be very, very funny:
"She came from the most right wing part of Orange County. Where Keaton lived, if you helped a blind person across the street they accused you of socialism."

Woody Allen's comments are hilarious R5. I want to see the whole damn show. Keaton is sublime, arguably the actress with the most impressive resume on film. I love her.

by Anonymous | reply 27 | June 11, 2017 6:09 AM |
Yes, I know, R9. What I'm saying is that term ("artist") was not generally used back when The Godfather was filmed. It's a pretentious term popularized by the pretentious Madonna Ciccolone or whatever the hell her name is. But maybe you didn't read the article.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | June 11, 2017 12:01 PM |

Mia should also have a 'ceremony' but she won't.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | June 11, 2017 12:14 PM |
I always hated Andy Warhol, too. Diane Keaton had nothing to do with it. It was mostly his dopey movies and Campbell soup "art."
by Anonymous | reply 30 | June 11, 2017 12:46 PM |
And that movie that was nothing but looking at a wall for hours.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | June 11, 2017 12:51 PM |
It's a pretentious term popularized by the pretentious Madonna Ciccolone or whatever the hell her name is.
It really wasn't. The term was in use back during the Method days, and with the "system" before that, long before Madonna was born.

Why DID Warhol hate Keaton so much? I read the diaries many times and he calls her a "phoney baloney" and gets makes all sorts of negative remarks about her. There was never a reason given. Anyway I liked Andy and Diane and I like Woody for his talent (not his judgement in relationships). I feel like watching Interiors now,

Cannot wait to see this tribute show -- Keaton is the just the best all the way around.
Lange/Spacek didn't show? Does anyone know for sure? I loved Crimes of the Heart so much that yes, I want to marry it.
R37 Instead of Interiors, watch Manhattan Murder Mystery. Thank me later.

Jane Fonda was there. I wonder if Jane and Diane ever slept together.

Diane is doing a movie with Jane and Candice Bergen (also in attendance).

I loved Interiors. It's my favorite except for Annie Hall and Hannah.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | June 11, 2017 4:53 PM |
R44 I think at this point she by and large dresses that way because it's what's expected of her.
The same reason why she continues to make those crappy comedies. I think she has long gotten over trying to challenge people's perception /stereotype of her, and figures it's easier and more lucrative to feed into it instead.
A shame because she is a lot more than just a parody.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | June 12, 2017 9:16 AM |
The only Woody Allen movie I liked her in was Sleeper. Didn't care for her neurotic characters in Annie Hall and Manhattan, maybe because they were too close to her real life. What a ditz.
If you ever read her memoirs, you'll realize how shallow she is. Or watch that documentary she directed about pet funerals. Awful.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | June 12, 2017 10:15 AM |
She usually does better than that, R44.
I think this is a cool look on her:
by Anonymous | reply 49 | June 15, 2017 5:06 PM |
Wow, I'd love for that pedophile to surprise me at my AFI award ceremony.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | June 15, 2017 5:39 PM |
Lisa Kudrow and Woody gave the best speeches.
Emma Stone was awkward, as usual.. Public speaking isn't for everyone, dear.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | June 16, 2017 11:46 AM |
Kudrow gave the best imitation of Keaton ever.
Meg Ryan's face made an appearance too.
Was Pacino drunk as hell or what? And since when has he adopted that Scent of a Woman drawl as his real life voice.
Fun show though. I've seen a lot of these and you can see that she's really, really beloved.

Diane Keaton, left, and Winona Ryder in happier times.

I've been looking at clips.
These kind of events make me cringe. They seem so forced. Lots of big fake smiles and forced laughter.

R1, she seemed quite happy to see Pacino and actually stood up when he walked out to the podium.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | June 17, 2017 1:35 PM |
Overrated. It should've been Faye -- a true acting talent & Hollywood Legend.

How ridiculous she looks, like Annie Halls' grandmother.

It wasn't recently. Didn't she date Pacino in the 70s. Anyway they might no longer talks a lot but it's clear he still has affection for her.

I love Diane, in everything I've ever seen her in. I don't want to derail this thread, but for those upthread going back and forth about when actors started referring to themselves as 'artists', I will offer this:
United Artists (UA) is an American film and television entertainment studio. The studio was founded in 1919 by D. W. Griffith, Charlie Chaplin, Mary Pickford, and Douglas Fairbanks with the intention of controlling their own interests rather than depending upon commercial studios.

R65.even though she's talented, I think the main reason she still works a lot is because she's well liked and has an easy to work with professional reputation.

Baby Boom is a guilty pleasure of mine. Perfect rainy Saturday afternoon movie.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | June 17, 2017 11:49 PM |
I've always liked Diane Keaton and her work. Beatty didn't do her career any favors when he tied her up in "Reds" for ages right after her Oscar win. She still managed to have a great career but missed some good opportunities there.
As a director I like her movie "Heaven" about people's different ideas of what heaven and the afterlife are like. It's fascinating and funny.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | June 18, 2017 12:06 AM |
R78 Reds was only two years after Manhattan. Plus at this time she had Interiors in 1978. And she followed Reds with Shoot The Moon. She was definitely on a career high after her Oscar win. She had a bit of a lull in the mid 80s before Crimes of the Heart. Overall she's had an excellent career.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | June 18, 2017 12:21 AM |

Sorry, I worded my comment badly and I realized after I had posted. I meant that only a couple years back did I know that they dated way back when and I was curious as to why she doesn't speak to him.
by Anonymous | reply 81 | June 18, 2017 12:25 AM |
Shoot The Moon should have gotten more time during the tribute. One of Keaton's best performances.
by Anonymous | reply 82 | June 18, 2017 12:34 AM |
did they mention Goodbar?
by Anonymous | reply 83 | June 18, 2017 12:44 AM |
Love, love, love Diane. Did they show a clip from The Good Mother! She was amazing in that and Mrs. Soffel.
by Anonymous | reply 84 | June 18, 2017 12:50 AM |
She mentioned Goldie and Bette and her other female co stars fondly. Just because they didn't attend doesn't mean they were snubbing her. Bette's on broadway, Goldie was probably plugging her shit Schumer movie and doesn't Sissy Spacek live in the woods somewhere?
by Anonymous | reply 85 | June 18, 2017 12:53 AM |

She even got nominated over Streep.

There was a great throwaway line after Woody embraced Keaton, handed her the award and as he left the podium, the mic picked him up asking "Should I put it right up on Ebay for you?". Her singing instead of giving a speech was a nice touch.
by Anonymous | reply 94 | June 18, 2017 5:34 AM |
Loved her in Marvin's Room! Had no idea she directed that shitshow Hanging Up. Thought it was directed by that hack, Nora Ephron. Loved Woody's appearance and sentimental tribute.

She has no friends:
"Everyone in Hollywood loves Diane Keaton—and the feeling is mutual. But that doesn't mean she's actually friends with everyone in show business. The 71-year-old actress recently received the AFI Life Achievement Award, where dozens of celebrities showed up to pay their respects to the Annie Hall star. And while Keaton appreciated the outpouring of support, she said on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Monday she doesn't consider her co-stars lifelong pals: "They've worked with me."
Keaton then began to review the list of attendees and presenters from her AFI ceremony. "Some are important, you know? Like Meryl Streep!" she said. "That's an important person."
Host Jimmy Kimmel asked, "Is she not your friend, Meryl?"
"I love her. But I don't see her very often," Keaton said. "She doesn't call. But I love her!"
Sarah Silverman "was funny," Keaton said. Unaware that Silverman had once dated Kimmel, she gushed, "I thought she was very funny and very attractive." That tickled Kimmel, who joked, "I guess you didn't go too deep into that Wikipedia, and you skipped the personal life part of it."
"Reese Witherspoon was there," Keaton said, returning to her list. "That was a nice thing."
"Not a friend?" Kimmel wondered.
"You know, I met Reese when she was 14 and I directed her in a TV movie," Keaton recalled. "She was just a kid. There was no question [she'd be a movie star]. Great looking. Great talent."
"And yet still not a friend? Kimmel asked. Keaton replied, "No, not a friend."
At that moment, Keaton realized, "I don't really have any friends.""
by Anonymous | reply 96 | July 3, 2017 4:12 AM |
R96 her being self-deprecating is news? And she wasn't aware that Silverman dated Kimmel?
What morons are these people?
by Anonymous | reply 97 | July 3, 2017 9:19 AM |
R81, Al Pacino tortured her with sadistic commitmenthobia for years. There was I think a breakup and a get-back-together with more torture, and finally he left her without a backward glance. And they didn't speak for decades. But within the last six or so months, there were signs of détente or thawing, when they trotted them all out for a "Godfather" anniversary or something. And now this AFI thing.

It's playing on TCM now. Interesting she talks about directing Belinda Carlisle's Heaven is a Place on Earth video. She said she really wanted that job and finally got it. But wasn't asked to do another video.
Except she did Belinda's next video I Get Weak. Maybe it was an editing thing, or she really just forgot. I love the I Get Weak video.
