Now regarded as a gay icon, Freddie Mercury mostly kept his sexuality and relationships secret. Maybe that's why when you look at these candid photos of the famous singer and his last boyfriend Jim Hutton, you can't help but feel a sense of intimacy that reveals the true beauty of their love. Freddie began seeing hairdresser Jim Hutton in the mid-1980s, but the start of their relationship was rocky. Freddie approached Jim on two different occasions at a club and both could be considered unsuccessful. It wasn't until the two met a third time at the same club (about two years after the initial chat) that Mercury's persistence won Hutton over and the two got together. Jim moved into Garden Lodge with Freddie about two years later and stayed together until the artist's death in 1991. Once diagnosed with AIDS, Mercury even offered his partner an exit on their relationship but he declined. "I love you, Freddie," Jim recalled his own words in a documentary. "I'm not going anywhere." And he didn't - Hutton nursed the love of his life, and was there when Freddie released his last breath.

Thank you, OP. I can see the real affection between them, and it is really sweet to see. Love the chapeaux and the kitties, too.
We lost a lot when we lost Freddie; obviously Hutton lost his world.

OMG, he went for a clone! How clichéd.
I actually was expecting something more along the lines of blond twink.
On the one hand, Freddie gets credit for not being fixated on conventional attractiveness, on the other hand -- well, given that the boyfriend is such an obvious clone of himself, he loses points for blatant narcissism.
Still, as long as they were happy...

besides the dark hair and moustache, they don't look alike R2.

Yes, thanks. That was fascinating.

His lover was a looker. Frankly, those teeth Freddie had would have been a deal killer for me. Why he never had them fixed is beyond me. He was such a handsome man, until he smiled.

Thanks, OP. Great photos of a beautiful relationship.

Jim doesn't look british, rather turkish or iranian.

Jim looks typically British to me, R9. I saw tons with that look in the 80s. As for Freddie's teeth, R7, he was self conscious but forwent fixing them because he believed that changing the shape of his mouth would affect his singing voice.

I love his teeth, I think they add to his overall look and charm. I felt that way about David Bowie's old teeth too. Hated the caps.

Those pictures have been around for at least 20 years. Jim was Irish.

R7 I remember reading he had extra teeth, but didn't have them removed because he was afraid it would affect his voice/singing.

Which one was the woman in the relationship?

Who is this people's?

In the photos at the link, they almost look like twins.

And for Freddie it wouldn't have been as simple as just getting braces or something. His entire jaw would have had to be reshapen which is no small feat. Agree with the poster above that his teeth/jaw were part of what made him unique and he'd look generic if he'd had it fixed.

I think he left most of his money and possessions to his former girlfriend Mary Austin, she also inherited his house the Garden Lodge in Kensington, London.

Jim was Irish and I knew him for a while in those wild disco years 1984-85 here in London. He and his then boyfriend, an air steward, would be dancing in the gay clubs - The Two Brewers, The Market Tavern, Heaven - and he was a great mover. I am Irish too and we got to know each other as pals, he often stayed over, sleeping with me in my bed, quite innocently - as he would miss his night bus home. I saw in new year 1985 with him and the steward at the steward's place. But then he vanished from the scene (He was a hairdresser at the Savoy hotel) and we later heard he had taken up with Freddie. That summer my best pal and I are dancing at Heaven superclub, high on acid, and suddenly Jim comes rushing up to us and says "This is Freddie" but I was not into Queen then and he just seemed like another clone, so I said "Hi Freddie" and we kept on dancing. All our lives changed that year, Jim settled down with Freddie, and I met one of the loves of my life down in Brighton and moved down there ... so never saw Jim again, but he was a lovely friendly guy. He got half a million (not that much ...?) from Freddie's estate, and may have been frozen out - he went back to Ireland but died of cancer later. His book on him and Freddie is a good read, and Jim is in some of the Freddie music videos too. He must have had a good time with Freddie while the life of excess went on.

I have met Freddie in Munich in the 80ies. I am, female, had a good friend starting his career in travestie. One night they took me out to the legendary "Old ,Mrs. Hendersen" bar in Munich. Late Freddie came with his Muse Barbara Valentin.

I love Queen and I love Freddie. Hard to believe that he’s been dead for almost 30 years.

I thought he turned straight early on. Wasn’t he married to a woman?
by Anonymous | reply 27 | February 11, 2018 12:16 AM |
Were they together a long time? Lots of couples become twinsies after a while.

r21. Interesting. Looks likes we are around the same age. When meeting Freddie during his Munich times, i barely took notice of him. He was just there. What a pity, and what an idiot i was, not to recognize the most talented musician and composer of the20th century.

Queen continues to rake in the cash - I've been hearing "Crazy Thing Called Love" in a national t.v. ad for Valentine's Day -- not sure of the product

r20, yeah, I keep hearing people refer to Freddie as gay but didn't he say the love of his life was the woman you referenced? So he was bisexual.
