Scott Pelley Reportedly Axed From 'CBS Evening News'

Scott Pelley reportedly has been booted from the anchor desk at “CBS Evening News.”

The New York Post, which broke the story on Tuesday evening, said Pelley will remain with the network at “60 Minutes.”

The newspaper’s Page Six said his office was cleared out earlier in the day, while he was away on assignment.

There is no word yet on who will replace him, but CBS Money is reporting that senior national correspondent Anthony Mason will likely fill in for now.

Pelley, who joined the network in 1989, replaced Katie Couric as anchor of “CBS Evening News” in 2011.

“Scott has it all. He has the experience, the credibility and he is among the very best reporters ever to work at CBS News,” Jeff Fager, who was then chairman of CBS News, said in a statement at the time. “We like to think of CBS News as the ‘reporter’s network’ and I can’t think of anybody in this business better suited for the anchor chair than Scott.”

Pelley has drawn both praise and criticism for his no-holds-barred coverage of President Donald Trump, whom he called “divorced from reality” during a broadcast in February.

He later defended the comments.

“I don’t think we were being too hard at all; it was just empirically true,” he told Variety. “The president had said a number of things that day that were false. I think it’s incumbent upon us ― all of us, we all believe this ― to help our audience sort out fact from fiction.”

However, the show’s ratings have been down. During May sweeps, the “CBS Evening News” finished in third place, down 9 percent in year-on-year ratings and 14 percent in the key demographic of viewers ages 25-54, according to TV Newser.

In addition, both the Post and New York Daily News report that Pelley has not been getting along with CBS News president David Rhodes.

Lol R1.... as if that would ever happen.

He's riding the tea cups right now, does he know, R1???

Damn! He's Hot!!

by Anonymousreply 4May 31, 2017 4:40 AM

Lester Holt should get the ax too, he is not attractive enough to be a network anchor. David Muir is the only one that fits the bill.

Anyone who fills David Muir's shoes will have a LONG, long way to go.

They should hire Bill Hemmer.

by Anonymousreply 10May 31, 2017 4:53 AM

BREAKING: Ryan Seacrest has just applied for the job...

Mr Seacrest was quoted as saying: "I won't rest while there's a job available that I'm not hired for."

by Anonymousreply 11May 31, 2017 4:54 AM

Sorry Ryan, but when we need someone to report on breaking news about the Kartrashians, you'll be the first one we call...

by Anonymousreply 12May 31, 2017 4:56 AM

R5, Holt's ratings are higher than Williams' was.

by Anonymousreply 13May 31, 2017 4:58 AM

Gio would be an improvement over Scott Pelley. And Tommy could be the health/media contributor. Both shirtless and in a speedo.

I would watch that.

Russ Mitchell left CBS in 2012 (or was pushed out) to become the anchor at a station in Cleveland and has been there ever since. Seems like a huge demotion. It's pretty rare to go from being a star anchor at the network level down to the local level (unless it's a market like New York or LA).

by Anonymousreply 33May 31, 2017 5:35 AM

Megyn Kelly is slated for the NBC 7:00 pm slot on Sunday nights. Do people actually watch TV @ 7:00 on Sundays? Seems like a great time for a show to bomb. I don't think this is what Kelly had in mind when she left CNN. Too much feuding and fighting at NBC lately. Has she received a warm welcome there. Maybe she'll have snatch up that CBS opening.

by Anonymousreply 34May 31, 2017 5:36 AM

Troll @ R34

He's just looking for attention with the NBC faux error. He's knows it's Fox.

by Anonymousreply 35May 31, 2017 5:40 AM

CBS shouldn't take this lightly.

People like Walter Cronkite and Dan Rather have sat in that anchor chair, and I think that the position should be filled by a) someone deeply respected, and b) someone very intellectually honest, and c) someone completely professional.

I know that's hard to find in this day and age, but they should really try. Unfortunately, I think that they're going to go for someone flashy, with weak journalistic integrity. As per usual.

by Anonymousreply 36May 31, 2017 5:41 AM

R35, I'm not R34, but Megyn Kelly actually does have an upcoming show on NBC.

by Anonymousreply 40May 31, 2017 5:46 AM

Looks like he had a run-in with the boss at CBS, R38/39, so they let him go.

Also according to the article, he referred to Drumpf as "divorced from reality" back in February.

Clearly, he was telling the truth, but in our new reality, you're not supposed to say that the "emperor has no clothes."

Sad!

by Anonymousreply 41May 31, 2017 5:49 AM

Thank you r41, and sorry for the double post.

by Anonymousreply 42May 31, 2017 5:51 AM

Go ahead, networks. Keep trying to cater to Trumpkins and giving PRAVDA a run for its money. Same with that roach at MSNBC who wants to destroy the increased ratings by going right.

You think young people are looking to watch your shit as it is? Way to appeal by attempting to normalize Orange Gropenfucker.

by Anonymousreply 43May 31, 2017 5:52 AM

[quote]Go ahead, networks. Keep trying to cater to Trumpkins and giving PRAVDA a run for its money.

Can somebody explain WHY so many news outlets are doing this? it's not like the entire country suddenly turned hard right after the election. Because of about 80,000 votes in three states, Trump was installed as President. Hillary still won the popular vote, and if you throw in all the people who didn't vote for her OR for Trump, that's several more million. All the protests should hammer it home that there are millions of people who are not okay with current administration. Why are they acting as if overnight, some switch has been flipped and we want all right wing propaganda, all the time?

What Andy Lack is doing at MSNBC defies all logic. Gut the people who are bringing in ratings and install people whom the channel's core audience soundly rejects? WTF? The Fox News goobers will NEVER watch MSNBC no matter who they put on the air, and they don't trust CBS either. They have been carefully brainwashed to believe that ONLY Fox is telling the truth.

by Anonymousreply 46May 31, 2017 6:13 AM

I hope not, r22. He's doing a fine, fine job on Face the Nation. Let's face it, these days anchors are just glorified newsreaders. They might get an opportunity to step up when major news breaks, but even when that happens I don't know that most people instinctively turn on network TV.

by Anonymousreply 47May 31, 2017 6:16 AM

It's especially disheartening when military vets are screaming boycott of USAA because they had pulled advertising off of that shaved ape Hannity's show after he kept spreading the conspiracy bullshit about Seth Rich and disregarding the wishes of his parents. USAA caved and will now put the ads back on.

Why are so many military people such fucking idiots when and defend right-wing draft dodgers and chickenhawk assholes who havenever served while attacking people who actually have served only when they lean left?

After a few more White House shuffles, CBS is proud to announce:

CBS Evening news with KellyAnne Conway

by Anonymousreply 60May 31, 2017 9:23 AM

[R59], the Trump comment made by Pelley that the article @OP pointed out was made in February, while the article @[R57] says that the bosses at CBS have wanted Pelley out since at least *December*--so it looks like this move was more about internal issues between Pelley and his boss as CBS News than anything to do with Trump.

The moving his stuff out while he was away on assignment seems cold and very personal....

by Anonymousreply 61May 31, 2017 9:38 AM

I don't know how he was on CBS Evening News, but on the few occasions that I caught him on 60 Minutes while having Sunday dinner with my folks, he drove me nuts. He didn't seem terribly bright and he came off as a sappy defender of the official narrative, a total power-fluffer. But that's true of almost everyone on 60 Minutes these days, so...

r36: the system for generating new media-friendly, corporate-friendly TV journalism talent weeds those people who are "a) deeply respected b) intellectually honest, and c) completely professional" out of the running, I think. And they all seem so bland

by Anonymousreply 62May 31, 2017 9:56 AM

I understand Sean Spicer is available.

by Anonymousreply 63May 31, 2017 10:26 AM

He is actually extremely bright and a talented journalist, but is full of himself.

by Anonymousreply 64May 31, 2017 10:36 AM

Hillary was in line behind Ryan Seacrest.

by Anonymousreply 65May 31, 2017 10:42 AM

[quote]So wait... he was fired for being critical of Trump? And nobody's freaking out about that?

Do you really want a biased, partisan anchor who doesn't respect the office of the President, the highest office in the world? How would we trust what he says?

by Anonymousreply 66May 31, 2017 11:32 AM

They should leave Scott where he is. They need to change his format. But Scott is the closest thing to Cronkite we have.

Anderson?

by Anonymousreply 67May 31, 2017 11:50 AM

I'm really disappointed with this as well. So much of TV news is useless, but Pelley's program (and much of the morning program) has an air of seriousness to it and when I watch I learn something or am taken somewhere (CBS still has actual foreign correspondents).

If you haven't seen that interview with Jackman, watch it - Pelley was in fine, fine shape when it was filmed. Too bad we never got to see him in a tank top or flat-out shirtless!

by Anonymousreply 68May 31, 2017 12:10 PM

He should have tried getting shirtless as a way to save his job.

Some hard news reporting from Key West would do it. Get him in a Speedo. Let him flash his pits when putting on his swim mask and snorkel. Nice shots of his ass while he swims.

If you have to get fired, go out with your tits to the wind.

by Anonymousreply 69May 31, 2017 12:15 PM

by Anonymousreply 72May 31, 2017 12:31 PM

by Anonymousreply 73May 31, 2017 12:32 PM

To be so abrupt about it by just cleaning out his stuff -even though they've been thinking about it for several months- means some real shit went down behind the scenes,

by Anonymousreply 74May 31, 2017 12:57 PM

r61, stop trying to make @ happen. It's not going to happen.

by Anonymousreply 75May 31, 2017 1:03 PM

by Anonymousreply 76May 31, 2017 1:47 PM

He has a hair trigger temper. News staff hates him. There were formal complaints from CBS news staff to HR. This was actually reported on over a year ago.

by Anonymousreply 77May 31, 2017 1:57 PM

[quote] Do you really want a biased, partisan anchor who doesn't respect the office of the President, the highest office in the world? How would we trust what he says?

So wait, are you saying that trump isn't "detached from reality?"

Because, um... yes he is. Pelley was telling the truth.

by Anonymousreply 78May 31, 2017 2:00 PM

Pelley is a hot fuckin' dad, better looking, more masculine, better voice than the goons on CNN/NBC or the fey girls over at ABC. Scott does have an intelligent, authoratative air. What, you want me to watch Miss A.C. after reading about her sex excursions to Brazil or wherever? Most news really is fluff stories of kittens or kids playing baseball...and lately it's all about how horrible the Trump family is. Hey, there's shit going on in the world. Report it.
