Olivia Newton John Diagnosed With Breast Cancer For A Second Time

The 68 year old singer has been diagnosed with cancer and says that she will be delaying the US and Canada tour dates due to her diagnosis, but “will be back later in the year, better than ever,” in a Facebook post on Tuesday. Her cancer has metastasized to the sacrum.

She's got tumors, they're multiplying.

by Anonymousreply 1May 30, 2017 7:22 PM

She said she's doing natural therapy.

I blame Suzanne Somers

by Anonymousreply 2May 30, 2017 7:28 PM

To spread to the bone, and all the way down to the bottom of the spine - that sounds really bad.

by Anonymousreply 3May 30, 2017 7:30 PM

Has she tried weed?

by Anonymousreply 4May 30, 2017 7:32 PM

Ugh, I hate to hear news like this. I hope that's not true, R2.

by Anonymousreply 5May 30, 2017 7:33 PM

Macrobiotic diet is said to cure many

by Anonymousreply 6May 30, 2017 7:39 PM

Macrobiotic diets are bullshit. Marlo Thomas did one and it turned her into a rageaholic; just ask her majordomo. It's paleo all the way for me.

by Anonymousreply 7May 30, 2017 7:43 PM

Sounds like Stage 4, which is terminal.

by Anonymousreply 8May 30, 2017 7:48 PM

OMG R1!

by Anonymousreply 9May 30, 2017 7:50 PM

Friend of a friend around her age, a bit younger, was diagnosed with Stage 3 breast cancer 3 years ago. She takes chemo drugs every day but she's fighting it.

Here's information and link posted below:

The bone is the most common site of secondary breast cancer. The bones most commonly affected are the spine, ribs, skull, pelvis, or upper bones of the arms and legs.

When breast cancer spreads to the bone, it can be treated (often for many years) but it cannot be cured. The purpose of treatment is to try and relieve symptoms and/or slow the growth of the cancer.

What, if anything, does she eat?

by Anonymousreply 11May 30, 2017 7:54 PM

"Along with natural wellness therapies, the entertainer will be treated with a “short course of photon radiation therapy,” adds the statement."

She has the resources so maybe she can get treated by immunotherapy like what Jimmy Carter had. Nowadays, if they come up with the right treatment that will stabilize/shrink her tumors, she can live a good bit longer. They're so close to a cure, I hope this happens. FYI, I was diagnosed in 2003 with Stage 4 cancer that metastasized to my brain, lymph nodes and pelvic bone. I was very lucky!

by Anonymousreply 13May 30, 2017 8:07 PM

Is Michael Douglas still breathing?

by Anonymousreply 14May 30, 2017 8:08 PM

Who Cares, r14.

by Anonymousreply 15May 30, 2017 8:19 PM

Congratulations, R13. I'm glad you're still here. What kind of cancer?

by Anonymousreply 16May 30, 2017 8:37 PM

Thanks [R16]! It started out as ovarian cancer and then spread to my brain. Fortunately, they got it under control fairly quickly.

by Anonymousreply 17May 30, 2017 9:16 PM

She'll be dead by Christmas. Then her plastic surgery addict of a daughter will REALLY go off the rails.

by Anonymousreply 18May 30, 2017 9:18 PM

That's an amazing story, R13/16. Thanks for sharing.

Some people react very well to treatments. A friend of a friend is dealing with cancer and her treatment is going well beyond expectations.

by Anonymousreply 19May 30, 2017 9:22 PM

r13, do you still have the tumors then? I mean, how is your health exactly now? That's incredible really.

by Anonymousreply 20May 30, 2017 9:33 PM

Glad to hear you have done so well, r13. Here's to many more years!

Olivia describes her treatment: "In addition to natural wellness therapies, the 68-year-old will complete a short course of photon radiation therapy."

by Anonymousreply 21May 30, 2017 9:36 PM

She can go a while longer (years) with metastases in the bone. Those cells replicate slowly, so various treatments can zap the tumors pretty well It's when the cancer spreads to soft tissue that it's terminal for most people.

At least with breast cancer. Different cancers behave differently.

by Anonymousreply 22May 30, 2017 10:14 PM

Thanks everyone! No tumors in the brain, tiny tumors in my lymph nodes and in my lady bits. The chemo I'm on is called Avastin and it cuts the blood supply off to the tumors so it can't grow or spread. Overall, I'm doing very well. I get chemo every 4 weeks, scans every 6 months. I am currently on seizure medication (from the brain tumors) which I have to take twice a day which saps my strength but it leaves me with enough energy to read Data Lounge all day long.

Cancer treatments have changed so much in the last few years so I'm hopeful for everyone with cancer including Olivia Newton-John.

by Anonymousreply 23May 30, 2017 10:26 PM

I'm sad to hear this news. I hope it doesn't do her in. She'll be receiving treatment at the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Center in Australia.

by Anonymousreply 24May 30, 2017 10:28 PM

Stay positive, r23!!

Probably r4, she bought her loony daughter a cannabis farm. Pretty wonderful of her. Get well soon!

Have to believe in Magic.

Best wishes, Olivia

I read that sacral cancer cannot be surgically moved due to its proximity to arteries, etc.

by Anonymousreply 29May 30, 2017 10:51 PM

When breast cancer spreads beyond the breast tissue it is known as 'metastatic breast cancer'. That means it has metastasized (spread) to other parts of the body such as the bones, lungs, liver or brain. Metastatic breast cancer is also known as stage 4, the most advanced stage - there is no stage 5 - with a 22 percent chance of surviving five years.

There are many ways breast cancer can spread without being detected. Cancer cells can invade nearby healthy cells, before replicating and spreading. They can also break through the walls of nearby lymph vessels under the armpits. Once in the lymph system, cancer cells can travel in the bloodstream to other parts of the body. Or they can get inside capillaries before dividing and migrating into the surrounding tissue. While it is not uncommon for cancer to spread, just 10 percent of patients experience secondary cancer in their sacrum, the base of the spine. It can cause extreme back pain, bowel issues and urinary incontinence. Since the sacrum is located very close to neural and vascular structures, surgery can be complicated. As a result, most patients are treated with radiotherapy - which is what Olivia plans to do.

by Anonymousreply 30May 30, 2017 10:58 PM

oh my r30. not good.

by Anonymousreply 31May 30, 2017 11:11 PM

This is such sad news. My ex is very good friends with her and I have met her many times over the years. She is truly one of those good people. I hope she can beat this.

by Anonymousreply 32May 30, 2017 11:11 PM

i'm very upset tonight. praying for her...

by Anonymousreply 33May 30, 2017 11:14 PM

Thank you r30. Can you speak to the prognosis with regard to the use of radiotherapy?

by Anonymousreply 34May 30, 2017 11:25 PM

It's really hard to tell.

by Anonymousreply 35May 30, 2017 11:28 PM

It's not good... At this point it may be too far gone for successful treatment.

by Anonymousreply 36May 30, 2017 11:35 PM

She has a history of breast cancer. I don't understand why this wasn't caught earlier.

by Anonymousreply 37May 30, 2017 11:38 PM

Did Olivia ever come out?

by Anonymousreply 38May 30, 2017 11:42 PM

I bet it isn't breast cancer at all. I bet it's lung cancer from smoking or AIDS or something and she's covering it up.

by Anonymousreply 39May 30, 2017 11:55 PM

It's really upsetting news.

by Anonymousreply 40May 31, 2017 12:06 AM

R39 She never smoked. Besides, you can get lung cancer even if you never smoked.

by Anonymousreply 41May 31, 2017 12:10 AM

r41

Well SHE says she didn't. But look at her kid, you have to be a horrible mother to have such a screwed up kid. She isn't as squeaky clean as you all make her out to be.

Besides she hasn't had a hit in nearly 35 years (1984's Twist of Fate was her last hit).

by Anonymousreply 42May 31, 2017 12:12 AM

It's plausible that this is from her original cancer, not necessarily a new tumor in the breast.

Cancer cells can hide in the body, out of the reach of chemo, dormant for years. Then suddenly they "wake up."

by Anonymousreply 44May 31, 2017 12:17 AM

[quote] but it leaves me with enough energy to read Data Lounge all day long.

Such an uplifting story then the inevitable downside.

by Anonymousreply 48May 31, 2017 12:39 AM

Prognosis is usually not as good for a return of cancer with mets, almost any kind of cancer.

by Anonymousreply 49May 31, 2017 2:22 AM

I can't believe this. She was in remission for so long.

Wonder how Kylie MInogue feels, she's had the all clear for more than 10 years. Maybe she will reach out to ONJ.

And of course Olivia's daughter has so many issues, she is not going to deal with this well. I hope there are some people who can take her in hand.

by Anonymousreply 50May 31, 2017 4:11 AM

[quote] I hope there are some people who can take her in hand.

Come take my hand

You should know me

I've always been in your mind

You know that I'll be kind

I'll be guiding you

by Anonymousreply 51May 31, 2017 4:17 AM

R51 oh man... that was totally unintended pun!

by Anonymousreply 52May 31, 2017 5:02 AM

Most women who survive breast cancer and are cancer free for more than 10 years tend not to have a relapse. But it's not a guarantee. I hope her treatments result in a long term prognosis.

by Anonymousreply 53June 1, 2017 1:34 AM

This is just insane. She'd been cancer free for, what, 25 years?

by Anonymousreply 54June 1, 2017 1:37 AM

She's such a good person. I hope she survives this regrowth.

by Anonymousreply 55June 1, 2017 1:55 AM

Praying for Olivia. She's such a good and giving person.

by Anonymousreply 56June 1, 2017 10:20 PM

[quote] I was diagnosed in 2003 with Stage 4 cancer that metastasized to my brain, lymph nodes and pelvic bone. I was very lucky!

Doesn't sound lucky to me.

by Anonymousreply 57June 1, 2017 11:47 PM

Nobody really beats cancer, once you've had it there's always the possibility its going to come back.

by Anonymousreply 58June 1, 2017 11:54 PM

WOW R13! I add my congratulations on your continued recovery and many more years!

by Anonymousreply 59June 2, 2017 12:56 AM

I wish I knew where and when this live performance of Magic was filmed. Love Olivia with long hair.

Yeah it's like my mother, she had breast cancer at 39 and then 60 years later it came back. So young

by Anonymousreply 61June 2, 2017 3:29 PM

[R60] The clip was filmed in September of 1990 at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles. Was part of an ABC TV special called “Mothers and Others for the Environment.”

by Anonymousreply 62April 21, 2018 6:15 AM

She no longer looks like Olivia newton john

by Anonymousreply 63April 21, 2018 12:28 PM

r63 doesn't look like himself either. he's old and shitty.
