His mother is indeed Creole. She's descended from the Padgetts, which is a typical Creole surname in Louisiana, like Babet and Phipps. Loosley translated it actually means "aid or assistant." These were the free people of colour who were dedcended from the union of the French landowners and their slaves.

R8: I've lived in the Atlanta area all of my life, and I've never known Kennesaw (where O'Pry grew up?) - or anywhere in the Atlanta metro-area, really - to have a significant Creole history or an entrenched Creole population. I didn't think that the areas to which Creoles may have migrated included Georgia - especially North Georgia.

The Atlanta area is home to many transplants - over the decades, people have migrated here from other parts of Georgia and from out-of-state. But I've never heard of any history of a strong Creole migration from the Louisiana/Gulf region to North Georgia.

I have (in a general, vague sense) heard of Creoles migrating to places like Texas - even California - but Georgia? Haven't heard of that.

IIRC - Kennesaw (a Civil War battleground) has a very rural, white history (and some Native American history) - and is one of those Atlanta suburbs that has seen a lot of suburbanization/modernization in recent years. (You don't have to be that old to remember when Kennesaw had much more of a rural backwater image.) O'Pry's mother and her family may have found their way there at some point - but that doesn't mean that they were part of a strong pattern of Creole migration to that area.
