Ernie Kovacs Was NEVER Funny

Not once...Even when Zsa Zsa was on "What's My Line," and Ernie spoke Hungarian to her, she blew him off with a "What a jerk" look.

He speaks well of you, OP.

by Anonymousreply 1May 23, 2017 2:52 PM

You got your finger on the pulse of the zeitgeist, OP. Well done.

r1

Then I take it all back

by Anonymousreply 3May 23, 2017 3:10 PM

He had a deliciously hairy hole.

by Anonymousreply 4May 23, 2017 4:06 PM

The Nairobi Trio would beg to differ.

He was supposed to have been very intelligent. In many ways he was more a performance artist than a comedian.

Ernie was an innovator and brilliant; his visuals led to :Laugh in" and many skits that late nite hosts used.

by Anonymousreply 7May 23, 2017 4:32 PM

He was as funny as Milton Berle and Sid Caesar

by Anonymousreply 8May 23, 2017 4:33 PM

r8

Even I was funnier than them

by Anonymousreply 9May 23, 2017 4:36 PM

Isn't most of his work lost?

by Anonymousreply 10May 23, 2017 5:47 PM

His facial features seem to indicate that his genitalia is of above average proportions.......

by Anonymousreply 11May 23, 2017 6:04 PM

Well, what did Ernie say to Zsa Zsa in Hungarian?

Maybe something like, "Take your panties off, bitch!"

by Anonymousreply 12May 23, 2017 6:07 PM

I didn't find him funny, but his Nairobi Trio was dadaist genius and lifts him into the pantheon of comedic greats.

Very intelligent. When he was killed in the car crash, he left behind a mountain of debts that took his widow, the great Edie Adams, years to pay off and she paid back every penny. She was the great one in that marriage, she deserved better.

by Anonymousreply 14May 23, 2017 6:12 PM

He was an original.

I didn't really get him, but my parents did.

by Anonymousreply 16May 23, 2017 8:04 PM

He was driving a Corvair when he died, on his way home in the rain from Jack Lemmon's house, he skidded..

by Anonymousreply 17May 23, 2017 8:30 PM

Sigh. I'm about to be That Guy but isn't the concept of Kenyan musicians being monkeys pretty racist?

by Anonymousreply 18May 24, 2017 7:13 AM

r13, Ahem: r5.

by Anonymousreply 19May 24, 2017 2:41 PM

Nobody alive today even knows who Ernie Kovacs is. I only know who he is because he co-starred in the very last Lucy-Desi Comedy Hour- the last time the Ricardos and Mertzes were portrayed on television.

[quote]Well, what did Ernie say to Zsa Zsa in Hungarian?

He was being an asshole and asked Zsa Zsa if she spoke Hungarian and Zsa Zsa said "no" (someone translated the show in the comments).

See link below, damn he had jacked up teeth, couldn't he afford dentures?

"Nobody alive today" r20 ? Really? Nobody?

by Anonymousreply 22May 24, 2017 6:05 PM

He was sexy as fuck.

Edie Adams was a lovely individual. One of the truly good ones in Hollywood and pro gay for her times.

by Anonymousreply 23May 24, 2017 6:18 PM

He thought he was funny but a tiny bit (less than five minutes) of Ernie went a long way

by Anonymousreply 24December 23, 2018 2:34 PM

I agree that he was more of a performance artist than a traditional comedian. I didn't laugh a lot watching his show, but I was always intrigued and entertained. He never did the expected; there was always something bizarre around the corner. I guess that type of oddball innovation is considered old hat now, but I like it.
