He's been very vocal about his sobriety for years. I guess that level of addiction for that many years does irreparable damage. I'm always suspicious when a musician does while touring because it seems they have an opportunity to relapse. At 52, it would be getting tough to perform with enthusiasm if you were sober.

R16 If I remember correctly he was a massive drinker. Not sure about the drugs but as R12 said, he was vocal about being sober. I believe he said he was able to fly under the radar because he seemed the most "normal" of the four.

My partner is a huge fan. I liked Cornell too until he started giving wanky interviews after getting sober and saying just really inane stuff, which also started seeping into his lyrics. Lately though he seemed to have evened out and moved past all the "rebirth" crap and I was back to being impressed with him again. His interview after the massacre at the Bataclan was quite good.

r31 that's the first thing I thought of.
You can also damage your system so that any change can cause problems. If he was pushing himself on tour, it could've caused a heart attack b/c his heart was weakened by drugs & alcohol.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 18, 2017 10:05 AM |
He was in the mainstream news recently (Feb. or March I think) as being a very close longtime friend of Brad Pitt--and being one of the only people who could lure Pitt out of hiding since his divorce to come out this big charity event in Los Angeles for an organization that works to find a cure for a rare, life threatening skin condition that afflicts some children at birth.
Pitt introduced his "close friend" Cornell onstage at the event. Chris and Sting posted this pic on Instagram after the charity event.

Detroit media is reporting it as an apparent suicide. He did his concert at the Fox Theater, went back to the hotel (MGM Grand). and was discovered in his rooms bathroom with something around his neck by the tour manager. Cornell's wife had called the tour manager earlier and asked him to check on Chris and when he went to his room and there was no answer broke in and found him.
by Anonymous | reply 49 | May 18, 2017 10:51 AM |

by Anonymous | reply 51 | May 18, 2017 10:52 AM |

If the wife was so concerned about him, why didn't she tag along on the tour?

by Anonymous | reply 53 | May 18, 2017 10:53 AM |

r58 some performers get wound up after a show and drain the energy in various ways. Even some older ones keep 'theatre hours', i.e. up all night, crash at dawn, sleep until around noon.
His younger kids were 11 and 12. That's a really tough age.
by Anonymous | reply 60 | May 18, 2017 11:04 AM |

Not a bad guitarist for a singer of that calibre, either.

This is hitting me pretty hard. I adored the man, he was a huge crush for me back in the 90s. So gorgeous and the voice was incredible. I've seen so many Soundgarden shows, but when he released his first solo album, he played the Moore Theatre for two nights in a row and I went both times. Loved him.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | May 18, 2017 11:44 AM |
Somebody on Reddit was at the show last night and said he seemed a bit off... still good but slower than the band at times, but I think he did two encores and signed some autographs afterwards.
Someone is also saying his last song was Led Zeppelin's 'In My Time Of Dying.'
by Anonymous | reply 72 | May 18, 2017 11:47 AM |
A lot of outlets are reporting the Led Zep song, but he's been performing it for a while on tour now so it may not have been an omen or a message.

Unless he relapsed and told no one. That happens more than people like to acknowledge.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | May 18, 2017 12:07 PM |
Sources tell WDIV in Detroit that Cornell’s wife called a family friend and asked him to check on the singer. That friend found Cornell dead on the bathroom floor in what appears to be a suicide, according to the NBC affiliate’s sources.

Had mentally said goodbye to him years ago because I knew he'd be killed. He's another one who sold himself to th highest bidder for fame. Notice his death was "sudden" and coincides with a pagan holiday? Also, his first and last names both begin with the letter "C," which is the 3rd letter in the alphabet, CC (33).
All you need to do is listen to the lyrics of his songs to see what the industry put him through. To those of you who are really saddened by his demise, my apologies, but you really need to wake up.
LYRICS - BLACK DAYS
Whatsoever I've feared has come to life
Whatsoever I've fought off became my life
Just when everyday seemed to greet me with a smile
Sunspots have faded and now I'm doing time
Now I'm doing time

Never a huge fan. I was more into Nirvana. But I did love the Audioslave song "It Doesn't Remind Me". As everyone else said, he was sober. For years. So weird. But hell, my grandpa drank a fifth and then some every day and lived to be be 94. You never know.
He was smoking hot and had pipes for sure.

I know, [R82]! I was away from this thread for only an hour and then I came back and was shocked at what people were saying and thought that the suicide thing was a joke!
I don't know why hearing the suicide thing is so, so upsetting, but I had just assumed (sadly) that it was an OD at first.
I mean, for him to *intentionally* do this (if it's true) even with having the world at his feet: amazing career success and recognition, money, fame, celeb friends like Pitt, a wife and young kids, etc. (and after just performing a concert which takes a lot of effort--and shows to him that he's still in demand by the public) is crazy and shocking!
What was going on with him? This is so sad!
And he was young too. Why end it all and leave those poor kids of his behind like this too? He *seemed* like a compassionate person as well with the charity work and such; I just don't get it at all...
He wasn't even one of those musicians that looked "rough" or "on the edge" and had you "worried" about him (like a celebrity like Johnny Depp for instance--sadly no one would be too shocked if Depp died right now). Cornell looked good and happy in recent photographs.
Why bother getting sober (which can be so hard) and making a new family if you're going to do *this*??

by Anonymous | reply 91 | May 18, 2017 1:00 PM |
52 is a hard age for men, it must be harder if you are famous and beautiful. I'm 52 and all I think about lately is death and the fact that my best days are behind me and there is nothing great ahead. Chris had a lot more to live for than me but he had serious addictions in the past and they say the desire for another high never goes away. I am intrigued with his friendship with Brad Pitt, they even dress alike. Brad always looked kind of grungy but you know that jacket with frayed cuffs was probably $5000 and I noticed that Chris Cornell had the same fashion sense, it's like they bought from the same designers (or maybe they borrowed each others clothes). It would be so hot if they were lovers but Brad must be devastated if they were.
by Anonymous | reply 92 | May 18, 2017 1:01 PM |
I've checked a number of likely sources now and yeah - official word from police is that Cornell's death involved 'a device around his neck).
Heartbroken. Could have listened to that guy's voice forever. Great chops, too.

Chris and his wife and kids at the "Into the Woods" premiere.
They are so young and he has sang several times with his daughter, Toni, onstage-- doing duets with her.

It's sad because there are so many personal pictures on here of Chris with his kids and family and Chris seems *so* involved with his children and took them everywhere (and also introduced them to every celeb he met, etc.)
He even wrote his mother-in-law a Mother's Day card just a few days ago :(

It's not known whether Cornell died because of drugs, first of all. Second of all, Amy is considered a legend by plenty of people and I don't know anyone who thought she was a whore. Everyone knows she was devoted to "Blake Incarcerated."
Now, Courtney Love would deserve that title, but unfortunately she's still with us.

In the future, will history care more that Chris Cornell died in 5/17 or that Roger Ailes died on 5/17?

No Rock-Star should ever get married and have kids and I doubt it was suicide if there was no letter left behind. He auto-erotically passed out after his choking hanging orgasm. There were probably hundreds of women in the audience who would have willingly blown him and swallowed, so why risk dying just to unwind?

That blind doesn't fit Chris Cornell. The time line is all wrong.
"Right before the band hit it big, the rock star and his wife has a child." It then says, his big head after success led to the break up of the band and at the same time his marriage unravelled.
Soundgarden's biggest success was in 1994 with Superunknown, they split in 1997, Chris' first child was born in 2000, his first marriage ended in 2004.

A great, masculine rock voice amidst the sub-Vedder mumblers of the 90s.
Chris Cornell was a handsome devil too, with great hair.
by Anonymous | reply 163 | May 18, 2017 4:28 PM |
Don't know anything about Vedder as a person. But I think he and his band are still great -- every year I go abroad to do humanitarian work and his duet with Chris is one of my theme songs. I watched Soundgarden explode and knew many tied to that scene just by accident -- this song makes me bittersweet. As a Gen X'er, it makes me a bit misty that a song like this became so huge. Rips my heart out actually when you listen to what the music industry cranks out now (yep, I'm old). If you love Chris's vocals, enjoy this song....RIP Chris, thank you for the great tunes.

I was literally shocked when I heard this news, I've been a Soundgarden, and Chris fan, for many years. He was gorgeous, I loved when he had very long hair. Not many could pull off that look, but Chris was the ultimate rock star.
Once a week, I usually listen to my two fave Soundgarden songs, "Fell On Black Days" and "The Day I Tried to Live". For downbeat songs, I've always found them uplifting. These songs always give me a positive vibe. I will surely miss this amazing man!
I saw Chris a few weeks ago on Fallon or Seth Meyers show, he did look much thinner. Could it be he had undiagnosed cancer? A relative died very quickly from a cancer which had been diagnosed in it's late stages.
Chris had a terrible divorce from his first wife. She was Soundgarden's manager and supposedly ripped the band off for millions.
His second, younger wife, was an American of Greek descent, she was based in Paris, where they had second home. IIRC, the second wife was some sort of fashion publicist. She didn't seem like Chris's type at all. When I first saw them together, I thought it was a random woman Chris was out with for the evening. Nevertheless, they ended up having a good marriage.

TMZ is reporting Chris's death as a suicide. They played a clip from his Detroit show last night, he appeared to be in great spirits.
Chris second wife wasn't very attractive, she didn't have a cool rocker chick look at all. From that Blind Item, she seemed like a typical run-of-the-mill golddigger. Chris wasn't exactly well educated, unfortunately, I can see him falling for such a user type. Now she gets most of his money, sad. Hope he left some cash to his kid from his first marriage.
I also read Chris owned some restaurants in Paris! I figured the gold digger fug wife stopped working once she got her claws into him. Wifey Two was Paris based for years. Wonder where they met.
How stupid are these rich and hot men?! Chris could have done better.

The blind at [R132] is super interesting and the commenters below the blind seem to agree that it's about Chris and his current wife and family.
Also: the charity he was famously fundraising for with Pitt in January in Malibu was specifically a children's charity--like the blind says he was involved in children's charities (and those around him thought he was hypocritical).
The mother-in-law's Twitter account at [R102] and [R103] is interesting in that she mentions Cornell and his kids and band *constantly*--even frequently interacting with Cornell fans over Twitter, retweeting stories about him, sharing personal pics of him and the kids all the time, and openly encouraging fans of Chris to interact with her.
I thought this was sweet at first---that they were just a super tight/close and supportive family--but after reading the blind upthread, I'm now thinking that the part about the wife's family wanting her to be with him for the fame and--especially--money they could all get out of it could very likely be true.
(Especially if they really encouraged his estrangement from his first daughter with his first wife like the blind says).
She doesn't exactly act like a typical mother-in-law with all the promotion and self-promotion. It's interesting; and I came across that Twitter account before I saw the blind here....

The blind also said that the MIL was like a pre-Kris Jenner Kris Jenner in that she raised her daughter from a very young age to hook someone rich and famous and marry them--that was the life's goal.
The picture below was posted by the MIL about a week ago (of her with the future Mrs. Cornell #2) and I can kind of feel the super aspirational/ambitious Kris Jenner vibes here...
(Sad too if the new wife and her family really were instrumental in helping break up his first wife and family).

Brad was 31 when Soundgarden has its biggest success (Black Hole Sun). It just seems a tad old since most become "addicted" to a rock band in their teens and early 20s.
However, Brad was 21 the year the band formed so maybe he was a lifer from Day One.

I doubt it's auto-erotic asphyxiation. The local news outlets were on it quickly, and their LEO sources would not tell media it was suicide if there was doubt. The police spokesman wouldn't say it was being investigated as suicide if it was auto-erotic asphyxiation. There would be clear evidence of it, and they would say something generic like "found in the bathroom, cause of death under investigation".

r250 he probably wasn't as rich as people think. If the gossip item has some truth to it, he could even have been wiped out. All the old bands tour for the money. All or one of their band members get in financial trouble (or they didn't have a lot to start with) and they're back on the road.

Chris's second wife and Brad's second wife (Jolie) don't have totally dissimilar vibes oddly enough.... (though Jolie was actually attractive at one point and is still more than the Greek RHONJ type Cornell married.)
They're both controlling, mostly wear black (though not in that pic obviously), parade the kids everywhere, started fooling around during the first marriage, seem humorless, and have chronic bitch face.

by Anonymous | reply 255 | May 18, 2017 9:50 PM |
Those talking about autoerotic asphyxiation have obviously never listened to a Soundgarden lyric, or watched early interviews. Chris always seemed to be dealing with depression, which is why he was probably an alcoholic at 13 and why drugs plagued his life. That things looked good on the outside means nothing, as one poster said upthread, that's not how depression works. I know that blind is about Cornell and his wife/manager, Susan Silver, without a doubt. I followed the news when he was taking her to court. I got a little disillusioned with him around that time - no way was Silver ripping him off. I remember seeing the two of them together at an event around '94 or so and they seemed like they were really committed to each other. I think she was about a decade older than him, however, so I was sort of not surprised when he dumped her for a younger woman, even after she'd gone to the trouble of pumping out a kid for him at 40.
I remember an old RS interview with Brad Pitt in the 90s after Superunknown was out and Pitt claiming they were the best band in the world. He'd been a longtime fan, apparently, but how many of us get to befriend the musicians we adore and become their besties?
I just realized that a post I made earlier said I saw him tour for Euphoria Morning at The Moore, when it was in fact The Paramount. His acoustic version of 'Seasons' from the Singles soundtrack is just stunning and has always been one of my favorites.

There are two sides to every story but he seemed like a difficult and not very bright man. His first wife is admired by many in Seattle but how do they know the ins and outs of a private relationship? Didn't he have to sue her to get his guitars back? What's that all about? She could not have been surprised that Cornell cheated on her while they were married. It was also reported before Soundgarden's reunion that Matt Cameron had serious issues with Cornell. I think many expected Ben Shepherd to croak before Cornell.

People who love alcohol - LOVE alcohol! It makes them feel better.
When they can't control their actions sufficiently, they are told they have to stop drinking completely. Thus, they are not happy.
THAT is why he killed himself: he was not allowed to drink, especially after his big "SOBRIETY ROCKS!" mantra that he preached about. It's better to kill yourself than to have the DL and the rest of the world ridicule you (like Ben Affleck and others) if you are "caught" drinking.
But not drinking, he was MISERABLE.
And that is why he killed himself.
by Anonymous | reply 270 | May 18, 2017 10:50 PM |
r256 his wife is saying he was showed no signs of suicide before. The media is reporting he was found with something around his neck. By others accounts, things were going well for Chris. And he left no note. Which a lot of people who commit suicide do, but Chris had young children and the way he talked about life in his later years gives you the sense that he wouldn't leave his family hanging (I know bad choice of words) like that, by not leaving a note.
All these things are making people wonder...
by Anonymous | reply 271 | May 18, 2017 11:08 PM |
Susan Silver was definitely a cool chick, more suited to someone like Chris than that fug fake social climbing Greek skank. Susan adored the music she championed, the Greek whore probably tolerated Chris's music. She was in it for the cash and reflected fame.
Chris's story is extremely sad, all around.
Susan with some members of Alice In Chains. btw, Jerry Cantrell from AIC has a huge cock.

I say this as a Chris Cornell fan, can we stop infantilising him?
If he cheated on his first wife, that is on him, not the person he cheated with. He was the one in a relationship, he wasn't some innocent party.
If it is determined (as it looks it will) that he killed himself, that is on him. Not on anyone else for not being there and babysitting him.
He was an adult man and his decisions were his. He was not an innocent man-child who was a bystander in his own life.

R273, what if he was a man who couldn't control his sexual impulses? If he was easily led astray by strange pussy while on the road? As I posted upthread, Chris was not well educated. He also suffered from depression most of his life. I can see these types of men being led astray by women, drugs and alcohol. Chris attended a Catholic elementary school, then high school, which he quit.
Chris was depressed for a very long time: "Cornell spent a two-year period between the ages of nine and eleven solidly listening to The Beatles after finding a large collection of Beatles records abandoned in the basement of a neighbor's house. Cornell was a loner; however, he was able to deal with his anxiety around other people through rock music. During his teenage years, Chris spiraled into severe depression, dropped out of school and almost never left the house during his state of depression. Before becoming a successful musician, he worked at a seafood wholesaler and was a sous-chef at a restaurant named Ray's Boathouse."
Lots of musicians cheat or their wives, Led Zeppelin comes to mind, yet very few leave their wives for a groupie or an on-the-road hookup. Wonder what the second wife had, because it sure was not looks. No gag reflex?
The Greek wife IS a skank and her fame whore family should be ashamed of themselves. I'm sure when she met Chris, she had no idea who the fuck Soundgarden were. That is always the case in situations like this. btw, I used to work in the music biz.

by Anonymous | reply 287 | May 19, 2017 12:40 AM |
I don't get why people are saying Brad Pitt was too old to be a fan. I was one and I'm 58.
The early nineties were very energetic, even cataclysmic. The Seattle scene was probably the biggest part of that. Never having "outgrown" my love of rock & roll, I responded to that movement. I've never looked the part of a rocker, so ageing wasn't a problem for me, I just enjoyed these bands privately, as a lot people, having passed the Big Three Zero, will do.
Anyway, what a waste. And to the people calling Chris dumb, life-long depressives are seldom dumb-far from it. There's also no use in speculating as to why he killed himself, it could have been anything. But a relapse could have preceded it, it's happened to two people in my small circle.
BTW, has anyone posted this? Fitting, to say the least.

No, I meant his former Plan B business partner and talent manager (and the head of Paramount until February), Brad Grey.
He died of cancer at his Holmby Hills house about 2 days ago and nobody in Hollywood--even the trades--knew he was even sick.
They were actually waiting for word of his next career move since he was forced out at Paramount in Feb.

The second wife sounds like a gold digger (I love R241's term, a nickel-plated bitch). But Cornell seems like a strange target for a gold digger, or maybe all men with a certain level of fame/wealth/power have women circling them, looking for a pay day.
by Anonymous | reply 314 | May 19, 2017 2:48 AM |
Wouldn't a gold-digger be more someone who would go after a Roger Ailes, Harvey Weinstein or Bill O' Reilly-type? You know, unattractive or really, really old.
Chris Cornell was actually fucking hot. Who wouldn't want him even if he were poor?
by Anonymous | reply 315 | May 19, 2017 2:52 AM |
R314, of course someone like Chris would be a perfect target for a golddigger. Chris was still fairly young when he met Miss Greece, she easily talked him into having more kids, he was gorgeous, famous and wealthy.
Why would she pick an old fat smelly geezer when she could fuck a younger very hot man? If Miss Greece married an old coot like Ailes or that other pig, Weinstein, she'd still have to fuck him. Speaking of, I can't get my mind around Weinstein marrying that gorgeous British fashion designer Georgina Chapman, does she vomit after fucking that slob? Think she has kids with him. I get nauseous even looking at Weinstein's rat face, I can't imagine what his body looks like naked.

"Say Hello 2 Heaven" was one of two songs, the other being "Reach Down", to be written by vocalist Chris Cornell when he was on tour with Soundgarden in Europe prior to approaching former Mother Love Bone members Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard to record the songs.[1] The recordings were originally planned to be released merely as a single before Temple of the Dog formed and decided to write more music. Cornell stated:
Right after Andy died, we [Soundgarden] went to Europe, and it was horrible, because I couldn't talk about it, and there was no one who had loved him around. I wrote two songs, "Reach Down" and "Say Hello 2 Heaven". That was pretty much how I dealt with it. When we came back, I recorded them right away. They seemed different from what Soundgarden naturally does, and they seemed to fit together. They seemed like music he would like. I got the idea to release them as a single, and to get at least Stone and Jeff, or all of Love Bone, to play on it. I had the idea for a couple days, then, with an artist's lack of self-confidence, I decided it was a stupid idea. Somehow those guys heard the tape, and they were really, really excited. Stone and Jeff and our drummer, Matt, had been working on a demo for what ended up being Pearl Jam, so we had the idea that we would make an EP or a record, and maybe even do some of Andy's solo songs.

I remember seeing him in concert when I was 17 yoa and thinking that he was one of the hottest guys on the planet. It was the very early 90's and I was closeted then. The man was like a sex god on stage wearing shorts and combat boots and nothing else. I had some sort of "backstage pass" that my friends had come across somewhere so we were able to "meet" the band before their set. They didn't interact with anyone, even the hot girls from my memory. Not that anyone was rude at all - just getting amped-up to perform. I vividly remember him bending over naked to change his shorts (I guess that the one pair he was wearing that looked identical to the other was not up to snuff). You could smell him across the room - a sweet, sweaty, manly musk due to his heavy perspiration. He was swigging a bottle of whiskey (I think - I was not that up on liquor back then). Whatever his real height, he looked to be 6'3" and bulging muscles everywhere you looked. The whole band (and other band members from other groups) was fucked up and were snorting something (I thought coke at the time) in one of the closets. I certainly did not see any needles around. Interesting night. Gorgeous man. RIP.

"You Know My Name" doesn't even rate among fans of Bond themes. It's on the same tier as Madonna's 'Die Another Day.' Another example of an artist attempting a Bond theme in the style of music for which they are best known instead of making a Bond theme.

If you think about the grunge genre, it's amazing that any of these guys came out of the 90s. They were just one heroin-shot/bullet-to-the-head away from death. They wrote hit songs about it. They were pre-EMO. The real deal.

What I find really amazing is none of you have noticed how different Chris Cornell looks.....in the eyes. He got crazy eyes the last couple of years. I know a lot of you will curse me out and tell me "he was still beautiful".....that isn't my point. His eyes have an uncomfortable intensity to them. I'm sorry to hear he suffered from depression. I know many people who suffer from it.
by Anonymous | reply 342 | May 19, 2017 5:09 AM |
R342: Well, he wasn't in a drug/alcohol haze and the cameras are much higher def than they were in the early 90s. I know what you mean but I put it down to that and perhaps age. A lot of the rocker or rocker-adjacent guys get almost an acid vagrant look as they get older. It's got to show somewhere. Even Brad Pitt looks vulnerable to it lately with the weight loss and the tension.
I have to read through more of the thread, but was he on meds for his depression? Something about it isn't right. I'm not entirely convinced it was suicide yet.
by Anonymous | reply 343 | May 19, 2017 5:22 AM |
R340 - that is a great point. I think that everyone connects with music very strongly in their late teen to very early twenties. Yes, you can be passionate at other times as well, but this age group seems to be the sweet spot for most. The internet was barely in existence until the late 90's - so outside of magazines, MTV and concerts, you really never were given the opportunity to see these guys at all. Kurt Cobain and Eddie Vedder were also beautiful men, but Adonis Chris just emitted raw, manly HEAT in way that I had never seen. His look was in keeping with the times - long, curly locks and boots and whatnot. But he sweated sex from his pores in a way that no one did in that era. Let's face it, he also kept his looks until death.
by Anonymous | reply 344 | May 19, 2017 5:30 AM |
r343 My only question would be was he under the influence of something that made him delusional/out of his mind before he succeeded in hanging himself. I was a bit surprised they released the cause of death so quickly without a toxicology report, although I believe it was suicide.
I agree with other posters here who thought he relapsed. I think it was drugs, because if he was drinking, someone would've probably posted on SM about serving him or seeing him drunk before he died.
I'm really, really upset about his band and friends/colleagues in the industry. They often know more than the families about someone's mental state in a situation like this. It's not unheard of to effectively have a suicide watch for a troubled bandmate. I know he could be a dick, and they were together for money, but it bothers me it seems no one saw it coming. Maybe we'll hear more in the next few days.
(Not that I think it was their responsibility, but it's just sad as they probably had the best chance of preventing it.)

Maybe he was on an Rx med that 'causes suicidal thought.' Even something like ambien can make you crazy if you aren't sleeping well on tour and then jacking yourself up with something to go onstage with no sleep.
I once found myself under a desk whimpering and thought I had lost it before I realized 'hey, wait. I'm on drugs even if they are Rx.' I stopped the ambien and everything was fine. Stressed and tired, but much better than that.
by Anonymous | reply 354 | May 19, 2017 6:01 AM |
r352 probably a lot. But another thing that makes me wonder, is the way Chris spoke about life and the his struggles, he seemed thoughtful and empathic--not the kind of guy that would leave his family with no sense of closure.
But you initially said, why is it when people hear "suicide by hanging they automatically think autoerotic asphyxiation"
I'm giving you reasons why people think it was unintentional and it wasn't an automatic reaction to suicide by hanging.
by Anonymous | reply 355 | May 19, 2017 6:09 AM |
That whole Seattle thing seemed so epic from the outside, but those people started dying immediately – first to go was Andrew Wood. And even if they didn’t die, the bands became compromised, like Pearl Jam. We liked them, but many seemed like they did not like themselves... And over the years they kept ODing or suiciding and were not so epic as we thought, just sad and dying from the start.
by Anonymous | reply 356 | May 19, 2017 6:14 AM |
He just seemed to be at the time of life where he had come through his struggles and yet was not old enough to be ill. And after a show with another coming?
'Device' seems an odd way of putting it. I get an image of bondage gone wrong or a jack kervorkian situation. They could have said belt or rope - but they conspicuously didn't.

Chris' wife isn't very attractive, she's pretty rough looking for a woman who is about 10+ years younger than Chris was. The kids are very cute, they mostly look like Chris. The wife has bad skin and scary eyes. The person who said she takes care of herself needs eyeglasses. Take away her makeup and I can imagine what that face looks like.
I knew it, Chris met Vicky Karayiannis while on tour with Audioslave in France. I figured as much, he met her while on the road. Vicky was a Paris-based American fashion publicist. I knew she wasn't from Greece. American Greeks are a ot more aggressive and pushy than Greeks from Greece.

I don't necessarily think it means she was bad for him. Part of what makes me sad is losing one of the last remnants of that quality in a Whores of IG Trump Kardashian world.

Medical examiners and law enforcement agencies see AEA cases enough that they don't automatically come out and call something a probable suicide, then officially release the cause of death as suicide if there's any chance it was an accident. The ME's office in particular would not have said suicide; it's a different cause of death, and they could be liable for checking the wrong box.
I think people are in denial for nostalgic reasons, or because there's not the level of definitive detail, like with Robin Williams' death, that removed all doubt.

Yup, notice he died in a hotel by hanging? - neat and tidy, no witnesses. He and the wife had a foundation that helped exploited and trafficked children. They were about to open a chapter in Greece in a few months. Reason why he was so passionate about helping children is because he knew about the awful truth about the entertainment industry (see Corey Feldman & Elijah Wood). He wanted to stop the perpetrators, but realized too late what he was up against. The depression and self-medicating were his way of dealing and now we can see the perfect cover.

Sounds very premeditated, like he was determined not to be stopped (if the timeline is true).
I *really* do hope that they find out *why* he was in such a determined suicidal state (whether it was depression/mental illness, physical illness, prescription drugs for depression, illicit drugs, or perhaps a combination of these things.)
It sounds like he was on a mission to kill himself that started before the last concert he performed at. I hope they find out why.
Such a sad story...

I was one of the first five posters Thursday morning, and then my laptop went down from that virus which is effecting MS PCs.
I finally got Windows reinstalled and began to catch up on this thread which has reached nearly 400 replies. I only made it to the early 100s, but I read somethings which I feel I need to address asap. Susan Silver is NOT any sort of a shrew, she most certainly did not rip off the band, and frankly without her guidance Chris might have gone the route of the lead singer of Mother Love Bone and OD'ed before his band officially "made it." She is a lovely woman, not a beauty but not a dog either, and she is the antithesis of what his current wife seems to be. Of course I don't know his current wife, but I do know Susan, and I want all of CC's fans here to know that she will be grieving his death as much as anyone(including the current missus.) Way back in the days of "Singles," people would say, "why would Chris choose such a plain chick when he could pull anyone he wants?" And that wasn't easy for her to deal with. I'll say this, he CHOSE her because she was good for him. And I will bet anything I own that if he had stayed with her he would be alive today. She never mismanaged his money, and when he needed help with his boatload of issues which kept him in a constant state of depression, she saw to it that he received help. My best guess is that wife#2 was driving the bus and wanted a glitzy celebrity style life, and that was not making him happy. He may have realized that he fucked over the one person who truly understood him, and there was nothing he could do to change that. And at age 52 he felt that it was just too late to make the massive changes he would need to make. A lot of us think we're past fixing things at the ancient age of 50, but I am here to attest to the fact that you absolutely can clean up and turn things around even in your fifties.

It seems someone is preparing their Antivan lawsuit.
[quote] The family of Soundgarden frontman Chris Cornell issued a statement Friday questioning whether his death by hanging was intentional and if “substances contributed to his demise.”
“Without the results of toxicology tests, we do not know what was going on with Chris,” Kirk Pasich, an attorney for the Cornell family said. “Chris, a recovering addict, had a prescription for Ativan and may have taken more Ativan than recommended dosages. The family believes that if Chris took his life, he did not know what he was doing, and that drugs or other substances may have affected his actions.”
Pasich noted that some medical literature indicates that Ativan can cause paranoid or suicidal thoughts, slurred speech and impaired judgment.

by Anonymous | reply 399 | May 19, 2017 12:00 PM |
Yikes on the possible Ativan complications. Do the police now have to retract their (hasty) judgement? Is the cause of death still suicide if it was induced by a drug reaction? How do you prove this particular drug caused the suicidal reaction? What's the absorbtion rate of Ativan? How do you prove how an individual reacts to certain drug dosages and or drug interactions?
Toxicology results and full causes of death are publicly disclosed in the US but... is this all going to lead inevitably to an unconfirmed finding? A drawn-out pathology process, squabbling family members, no proper tribute send off... Jesus it's George Michael territory all over again.

It's been dying since Day One, honestly. We GenXers aren't the most robust generation. Boomers and Millennials bitch about how bad we say we had it when growing up, but we really did. Urban areas were basically The Purge back in the 70s and 80s, and rural areas were basically 1890s conservative Christian enclaves.
Our musicians reflect that, which is why the more genuine artists are dying young and why the poseurs like Trent Reznor and everyone in the Spin Doctors will live to be 110.

I don't think his eyes look scary or he looks druggie skinny. He's always been Howard Stern skinny which makes a man look haggard in his 50's. I'll bet it was the Ativan which causes suicidal thoughts. He was probably sick and tired of dealing with anxiety and depression and the shitty Ativan pushed him over the edge.
by Anonymous | reply 402 | May 19, 2017 1:38 PM |
Unless he had a bad reaction to it, the Ativan should have calmed him down, made him not worry as much shouldn't it? That still doesn't mean it would prevent suicidal thoughts in some people.
A woman (friend's relative) committed suicide and she showed no signs of there being anything wrong that day according to her family.
You want to think there would be signs and you could help them, but sometimes there aren't.
by Anonymous | reply 403 | May 19, 2017 1:51 PM |
I hate to say this, but when I was in inpatient recovery, the use of Ativan or any psychotropic drug other than anti-depressants was taboo. The feeling was that if one is taking Ativan Xanax or Valium they were not "sober." So I have some doubt as t his purported sobriety.
But having said that, Ativan would, if anything, soothe his mind and relax him. I have never ever heard of that category of drugs causing suicidal thoughts. It's mostly anti-depressants which cause suicidal thoughts, which seems odd, but that's the truth.
by Anonymous | reply 404 | May 19, 2017 2:09 PM |
First, I don't think Susan is plain. She's very pretty, imho. Second, I think wife 2 is trying to quiet the autoerotic rumors with the Ativan thing. What's interesting about this new development, is wife 2 states she talked to Chris two hours before and he was fine.

Great post R390 and I agree with you re Susan, Chris might have had enormous guilt about what he did to her and their child.
While I was a big fan of Chris and Soundgarden, I can't say I knew too much about his personal life. I was actually more into the music, than knowing intimate details about Chris' life. I just knew when I saw Miss Greece, something was 'off' about her. They didn't seem like a couple. I did know a bit about how he screwed over Susan Silver, I think Miss Greece has A LOT to do with how he treated Susan. Chris' depression might have made him extremely easy to manipulate.
Sometimes you can just look at someone and read them immediately. To me, Miss Greece has golddigger written all over her. Did Susan walk around with Hermes handbags? I doubt it. Well, Miss Greece does. These are signs telling the world a bit about Miss Greece's character.
Perhaps Chris had overwhelming guilt about how he treated Susan and their child, it was too much for him and that's why he committed suicide. Who knows, he might have left Susan and their child the majority of his money. Stranger things have happened. Another problem, a lot of people in showbiz simply do not surround themselves with the right people, there are too many 'yes' people and fakers hovering around celebrities. Many simply want a piece of your soul and, of course, your money.

Ok, I think some information is getting twisted here. Chris left SS for wife 2 who he met on tour. Yes, that is a jerk thing to do but it happens everyday. When Chris left the divorce got ugly. That is natural considering the situation. I think SS THEN mismanaged Chris' finances out of anger. This is really what was first alleged. Apparently, she diverted funds to the other band members that should have gone to Chris. Once attorneys get involved things always get messy and here is no exception. The lawsuit got messier and the divorce did too. SS had every right to be angry, but she WAS angry and punished him financially. It took over five years for her to give him his guitars and Grammy. So this was not ALL Chris.
That said, I'm really curious about why his hotel door had to be broken to gain access? That makes me think this was a planned suicide. Its a hotel for Christ's sake, there are pass keys!! Did he use all locks and barricade himself?

I had a bad reaction to Ativan. At least I think I did. My doctor prescribed it for my nerves but it sent me into a mini-breakdown. I was driving down Crescent Heights in L.A. and decided to make a left turn where there was no street. I hit the curb and blew out the two front tires. I went into some kind of fugue state. I remember looking at the car, realizing I couldn't fix both tires, and the next thing I knew I was at home in bed and my father was asking me if he should come out. I guess I called my boyfriend and he came and got me. He looked real worried. I told my doctor what happened and asked his advice. He said, "Stop taking it.!" LOL. Twenty years later I thought I was heading towards another nervous breakdown and after trying everything I went to another doctor and begged her for something. I told her I felt all clenched up inside. She referred me to a psychiatrist who prescribed Xanax which totally fixed me. No side effects.

Taking a few Ativan does not cause someone to choose to hang themself. This claim is an attempt to make it seem like their marriage was perfect and happy and a possible attempt to sue Ativan and get more money from them and the life insurance.

R424 I agree this doesn't seem likely. Chris had presumably been taking meds for awhile so an extra one or two would likely make him pass out not kill himself. However, and I'm not defending his wife per se, I understand a desire to keep his kids from that hurt. There was an emphasis on him not doing something that would hurt them....I don't blame her for trying to protect them. From a kid's perspective, a parent committing suicide is a assault against them and their sense of comfort in the world. It is a horrific fate to suffer.

Details surrounding Soundgarden singer Chris Cornell’s suicide were published Friday by The Detroit News, which obtained a copy of a report filed by officers who responded to the scene.
According to the article, the report says Cornell’s wife, Vicky, asked his bodyguard to check on the singer after a telephone conversation in which he repeatedly said, “I am just tired.” The bodyguard, Martin Kirsten, went to Cornell’s room at the MGM Grand Hotel shortly after midnight and found the main door and a door to the bedroom suite locked; he forced both doors open. He found Cornell on the bathroom floor, “with blood running from his mouth and a red exercise band around [his] neck,” the report says.

I heard on news reports today that the wife now claims he was slurring his speech when she spoke to him... I think this was after the concert? Can't remember when but he told her that he had taken a few extra pills. She then got security to find him.

Wow, [R429], the suicide scene sounds brutal (blood running out of mouth, etc.).
I really do want to know the details of what went down.
He talks to the wife on the phone and is able to get through performing *an entire concert* and then immediately after decides to strangle himself to death with an exercise band?
It's such strange behavior...I hope they find out what caused it.

I used Ativan and Xanax somewhat regularly for about 8 months, and it really messed my mind up. I definitely had dark thoughts, and it took me forever to realize it was the drugs. When I did, I stopped taking the pills, and I got myself back to normal.
I could totally see his suicide as inspired by a Benzo. Those things are fucked up, and some people have very bad reactions to them.
by Anonymous | reply 445 | May 20, 2017 9:02 AM |
I'm getting lost with this story. Is this article insinuating there were lengthy delays between Chris' security guard finding him and an ambulance attending? Did the security guard not attempt CPR? Surely he would have been trained? And if Chris had taken 'an extra one or two Atvian' as his wife seems to be saying elsewhere, where did these come from - this article seems to be implying that the security guard had Chris' medication under lock and key.
by Anonymous | reply 446 | May 20, 2017 9:35 AM |
I have many questions as well, the timeline is questionable. They said the bodyguard came into the room at 1230am to fix Chris's laptop and he gave 2 pills to Chris, which he took. And then he hung himself shortly after?
by Anonymous | reply 448 | May 20, 2017 9:54 AM |
Ok, just read the article, 1130pm bodyguard goes to Chris's room to fix laptop and gave him 2 pills. Wife called him at 1215am and he was slurring his words, repeated "I am just tired"many times and hung up abruptly.
Sounds like he was annoyed by her. Maybe that's why she not on the tour coz he didn't want her there.
I think he definitely planned it. And she called bodyguard to check on him after phone call at 1215am. Doesn't mention what time the bodyguard went to break down the door... surprised emt got there so late, didn't they call 911?
by Anonymous | reply 449 | May 20, 2017 10:09 AM |
Also "I am so tired" is very telling, he is tired of the way his life is going, tired of touring, tired of performing, tired of his wife, tired of the demands placed on him; tired of everything.
Isn't the wife upset that they're calling it suicide so soon? She wants to wait for tox results, which leads me to believe he was not sober.

Has brad Pitt released a statement yet?
by Anonymous | reply 451 | May 20, 2017 10:18 AM |
Trouble with the wife I'd say. And she wants to blame whoever was distributing the Atavin. In her statement, the wife only mentions that she can't belive it was 'deliberate' because Chris 'loved his kids'. No mention of him loving her. Something's not right here.
by Anonymous | reply 452 | May 20, 2017 10:24 AM |
The wife sounds like a cunt, if she knew that Chris was in a fragile state mentally and not sober, why didn't she follow him on tour to make sure he's ok, considering that he's her golden goose? I don't think he wanted her there.
Sting's wife, never lets sting out of her sight. They are always together.
by Anonymous | reply 453 | May 20, 2017 10:53 AM |
Not just the wife, but really the whole outfit - band, staff, management etc etc should not have been OK with Chris touring - and certainly not with him being alone. I know I know - the show goes on... Only when things like this happen, nothing goes on - and you wonder why everyone was pushing their luck so far. And now three kids have lost their father.
The story makes little sense. I'm no Ativan guru but if someone (and this is assuming the wife is speaking truthfully) sounds muddled and says repeatedly that they are very tired, I'd not be expecting them to go to the exertion of rigging up a whatever and hanging themselves. I'd be thinking they might more pass out.
If the prescription drugs were with the security guard, what's his take on how many pills Cornell popped?
Tell me this not another Michael Jackson repeat.

On the one hand, why bother having the bodyguard fix his computer if he was planning to kill himself?
On the other hand, he must have been planning ahead, or why have a carabiner ready to use?
by Anonymous | reply 455 | May 20, 2017 11:14 AM |
The "history " of his laptop should be really interesting...
Also, I wonder if they "cleaned" the room before calling authorities. Notice the huge gap in time between discovery and arrival of emt etc.
by Anonymous | reply 456 | May 20, 2017 11:22 AM |
Security guard wasn't thinking too fast, was he? Why even mention the computer 'fixing'? Think I might have dropped that detail.
Unless it turns into a criminal case, the family won't be obliged to disclose or even explore the laptop's history, correct?
If someone really needs a security guard/minder, shouldn't they be within range at all times? What's with having to ask hotel security for door access (and then being denied this as well)?

Don't know what to make of the 'I'm so tired' comment. It does need more context. Maybe the wife was pressing him to explain what was going on and he just wanted to shrug her off. I've said that so often when not remotely tired - more like pissed off or even bored.

Still, the wife seems to be talking only about Ativan when really you could have taken anything and someone on the other end of the phone is not going to be able to pinpoint this and that and the other.
What a mess. Prince's tox results took a lot longer than people thought they might, and then George Michael's managed to drag out to two months (and then some for the viewers at home). Let's hope things can turn around a bit quicker on this one.

Security Guard could have strangled him, been on the payroll of the wife. How do you beat down thick hotel doors? I'm in one right now and ... I really don't know. Seems like a wonderful alibi. Why would he lock himself in the bedroom area if the first door was already locked? Wouldn't hotel staff be more practiced at opening their own doors?
by Anonymous | reply 466 | May 20, 2017 4:57 PM |
Also could have barricaded self in smaller area to get away from security guard or whoever. Any signs of struggle? I really question locking both doors. You wouldn't do that if you were alone in your hotel room unless there were other people there.

by Anonymous | reply 468 | May 20, 2017 5:00 PM |
Are there suggestions (upthread and possibly elsewhere) that this was not suicide at all, and that the bleeding was caused by something other than wounds caused by hanging?
I have to say I find it odd that the (trusted) security guard had hold of the Atavin, yet had irresponsibly dispensed more than the prescribed amount. AND was then the go-to to check on Chris. AND did not have proper access to his room. What actually?
I'm no rock star, but if my partner/family member/best friend was in a fragile state and I was suddenly very worried about them, I'd insist that hotel staff enter their room and check on them immediately - even if I wasn't 'authorised' to enter. I'm sure staff at a major hotel would rather go check someone was OK than have a scene on their hands.
As for the Atavin, if this was being taken regularly under prescription, would side effects not have shown up early on in the piece. Would take 'an extra one or two' on the odd occasion (and perhaps this was not the first time) really have a much, much different effect than all the other times at the prescribed dose? I guess this is a question as I've no real idea. Just seems strange that such an adverse effect would manifest only on this occasion. And anyway, is this drug super super quick acting? Didn't seem to be much time between supposed ingestion and calamity. Nothing makes any sense

CC was not the sort, from what I have heard, to be so sexually jaded as to resort to life threatening methods to get off.
I am now all but convinced that he hated the life he was living. I bet if he could snap his fingers and go back to his pre-Vicky years he would have done so. As someone else said upthread, that Morgan person on the CC blog REALLY had Vicky and her family clocked.
And yet, he freely chose her, so I can't hold her solely responsible for his sadness. I'd like to, but I can't,

Typical rockstar story re the second wife situation. The first wife, a music manager no less, goes through the very lean times with the deceased, while the second sleazy fake poseur 'Joisey Housewife' type reaps the benefits and lavish lifestyle through Chris's talent.
The more I read about Vicky, the more apparent this woman was a tramp and gold digger. Vicky was already in a relationship when she met Chris n Paris.
The so-called 'fashion publicist' job Vicky had in Paris was through her brother's publicity firm. Bottom line, this Vicky bitch was not as accomplished as she painted herself. Seems she had her brother produce some events for Chris because she had her eyes on him for a long time. IIRC, he was touring with Audioslave when they met in Paris.
After they married, in private she belittled Chris and teased him about his small cock. Vicky sounds like a real piece of work. She's not even good looking, take away the designer clothing, the makeup etc and she looks like a typical short squat middle aged immigrant Greek woman walking around Astoria Queens!
Chris probably killed himself because he couldn't stand being with Vicky anymore. Chris fell for Vicky's nonsense hook, line and sinker. If he had remained with Susan Silver, he'd be alive today.
"I am so tired" meant he simply couldn't deal with anything any longer.

Ok, so his wife said, "I'm just tired," and not "I'm so tired," but to me it pretty much means the same to me...that he was just tired of it all therefore ending it all. He said it repeatedly and hung up abruptly.
Was he living in Miami? With the wife and family or separated? I mean, he could have said ," I love you" one last time but didn't.
by Anonymous | reply 494 | May 20, 2017 9:58 PM |
"I'm just tired," and not "I'm so tired", you bet it means the SAME thing.
This slimy user Vicky chick was definitely not a nice or normal woman, her reputation is horrendous. There’s not one positive word about her in showbiz circles. Even from people she knew when she was a teen, Vicky had an extremely bad rep.
Chris probably could no longer deal with his sham miserable marriage. Looking 'happy' in photos is not the same as actually being happy in real life.
One of the kids Chris had with Vicky was almost platinum blond, is that the older kid? There was a rumour that Vicky was already pregnant by the other boyfriend when she hooked up with Chris. Vicky easily dumped the other dude because Chris was richer and better looking.
Could be Chris knew the blond wasn't his kid, he no longer could deal with the entire situation.
Chris might also have been so depressed, that killing himself was a much better option than another horrible divorce. Chris might have felt he was a failure in his personal life. His suicide likely had little to do with his actual career, more about his fucked up personal life. Anyone with eyes could see Vicky was forcing Chris into a jet-set lifestyle he wanted nothing to do with.
All the fans in the world telling you how great you are means nothing to some rockstars. I remember something Janis Joplin once said in an interview, it was something along the lines of “ There thousands of people screaming for me at my concerts, yet I go back to my hotel room alone.” And that’s how Janis died, alone in her hotel room from a heroin overdose.
Janis never had someone who loved her for her, there were many who loved the famous 'Janis Joplin’, rock singer supreme. This can be said about any famous person. You never really know who loves you for the real you or from what they can get from you. Vicky apparently got a glamorous jet-set life through Chris’ talent. Most of her reputation as an ‘accomplished' fashion publicist was bullshit.
Chris always looked miserable around Vicky, those smiling photos of them together were so forced. His mother despised Vicky. I feel so bad for his mother, Susan Silver and his children.

R498, a person, a woman, who obviously knew Vicky for a long time, a former friend who knew all about Vicky and her penchant for luring in hot and successful men, revealed all at a gossip site. They did this during the time Vicky and Chris met then got married.
The woman who posted the dirt about Chris and Vicky had been demeaned by Vicky for years. Party girl user types like Vicky don't have real friends or deep friendships., their goal is to meet a hot and wealthy man. Vicky obviously used this female friend and the friend revealed all. The former friend posted Vicky's address in Paris and four of Vicky's phone numbers. I'd say that woman knew Vicky very well. A groupie, or hanger-on, sure doesn't know addresses and phone numbers.

R502, that's exactly what skankola Vicky told her now former friend, that Chris had the "Irish curse". She also said he couldn't stay hard, just terrible things to demean him and make herself look like a victim. I'm sure she'll spin his death to make herself seem like the victim once again. It was clear Vicky was the one pushing the tanning booths and jet set lifestyle on Chris. Dude was happy just to be able making the music he enjoyed.
It was obviously all about the psycho Vicky, this woman is completely delusional. Guess she didn't have a mirror, she was not the pretty or talented one in the relationship..
I always thought Chris was part Hispanic or even Italian, there are many Hispanics and Italians with dark hair and light eyes.
Can't understand why anyone would call Vicky attractive. The former friend said she was ugly inside and out. Vicky had a lot of body hair removed through electrolysis and waxing, said she's short and stumpy, she had ugly hands and feet. The former friend really tore into her. The friend said she barely knew Chris, yet knew Vicky was totally wrong for him and was a user.

And burial to be at the Hollywood Forever Cemetery, ugh. Couldn't they put him in the quieter (classier) Forest Lawn? Not 'celeb' enough I guess.
Interesting theories about what may have happened. Also find the bodyguard's behavior strange. How would have a severely drowsy CC be able to slam a carabiner onto the door - did he carry one of these around with him when he traveled? New reports said it was slammed so hard on the door it left a dent on it and the door frame. Then have the energy to put the band round his neck. very fishy.
I'm wondering if imaybe the bg gave him something heavier than Ativan, or mistakenly gave him something else, which might have killed him and the hanging was a 'ruse' to cover it up. The tox results will clear a lot of this up.
For those who asked Ativan is very fast acting and has a fast clearance, meaning it's metabolized by the body and cleared faster than other benzos (has a shorter half-life). This is partly why it's become the benzo of choice for anxiety, its supposed to be harder to get addicted to.

I definitely didn't get addicted or suicidal, I easily stopped it. Guess this drug affects different people differently. Now when I see my mom, I simply tell her to shut the fuck up.

R503 as fucked-up as the wife is, Chris must've had some deep-seated self-esteem issues to put up with that. Other posters on here mentioned he had a bad childhood/home life. Was he verbally/emotionally abused as a child? Abused people frequently attract abusers and users, who can sniff out vulnerability like lab rats in a maze. Really reminiscent of Courtney and Kurt's relationship.

R507, I don't think Chris had a bad home life, as in being abused by his parents. By all accounts both parents had good jobs. IIRC, his dad was a pharmacist and his mom a real estate agent. Maybe they were alcoholics or druggies.
I think his parents divorced when he was young, that might have made Chris very depressed. He seemed to be depressed from his childhood. He locked himself in his room a lot.
R511, Facts straight? They're not MY facts, asshole. I read about trashoid Vicky at a Soundgarden gossip forum, I even stated as much. Men who dump their partners who stuck with them when they weren't rich and famous aren't some poor little fragile floweres. They are cold, self-centered users. He deserved the shrew he ended up with. Nice guys don't marry cunty women.

Meh, you are all talking like little fraus projecting your situations with your partners on chris. Whether wife no. 1 is a saint and wife no. 2 is a manipulative goldigger the point remains that both were strong women who controlled his life and he sought them out. What grown ass man needs that mothering? He obviously was never single for long, needed to be with that kind of woman all the time. All this "thirteen reasons why" lets blame somebody's suicide on somebody , if A didnt meet B none of this would have happened schtick just needs to go away.

I hope more Dirt about this ugly vulture Vicky gets spilled to the media now that Chris has passed away. A friend of mine was good friends with his brother 10-15 years ago and he pretty much insinuated that Vicky was anEvil cunt that brainwashed Chris and destroyed their family.

Scott had a cute little ass for a skinny guy as you can see here (at 4:20), and he didn't off himself R475. He died of an accidental overdose. He did abuse his body for many years though and was bipolar.
Chris performed a song in memory of Scott not long after he died. I think the name of it was "Say Hello To Heaven".
I wonder if Chris was already having suicidal thoughts. Two great talents gone.
by Anonymous | reply 521 | May 21, 2017 5:31 AM |
"Say Hello To Heaven" was written in 1991.
Chris originally performed the song with his offshoot band, Temple of the Dog, which consisted of Chris, Eddie Vedder, Jeff Ament. Matt Cameron, Stone Gossard and Mike McCready. Basically, TOTD was a band consisting of Soundgarden and Pearl Jam members. "Hunger Strike" is the other well known song by TOTD.
by Anonymous | reply 522 | May 21, 2017 6:00 AM |
Say Hello to Heaven was written after Andrew Wood of Mother Love Bone died and Soundgarden was on tour in Europe. CC had no one to talk to about AW's death and wrote the songs. He brought them back to Seattle, showed them to the remaining Mother Love Bone people who would soon become Pearl Jam, and they all decided to record them.

Meant to post, the song was released in 1991. I have the CD.
I'm quite aware of Andrew Wood overdosing. Whenever the song was written, it was not about Chris wanting to commit suicide.

Am I missing something here? If Chris' funeral is going to be on May 26, how on EARTH will they manage to have done the tox results by then? Michael Jackson's took longer, Prince's took way longer, and we all know how long George Michael's took (OK so maybe there was all sorts of merriment and bullshit going on behind the scene on that one but the point remains). I thought the coroner did not release a body until their findings were complete - tox results included.
Please explain.

[quote]What grown ass man needs that mothering?
Someone who had a bad childhood, apparently. There's a reprint of a 1996 interview with him at Pitchfork where they related the story of how he would sometimes just stop talking at work when he was a teenager, after he was kicked out of high school and never finished. He once went two months without saying a word to anyone. That's a pretty good indicator that he was troubled.
by Anonymous | reply 527 | May 21, 2017 10:18 AM |
In even interview I've ever seen of him, he looks massively highly strung and intensely uncomfortable. Struck me he had massive self esteem issues. Which of course does not excuse him cheating on then walking out on a loyal partner, but he never looked remotely comfortable in his own skin to me - other than when he was on stage of course.
by Anonymous | reply 528 | May 21, 2017 10:24 AM |
Can you imagine being a major introvert but looking like a combination of rock god and Jesus? That jaded rock reporter who wrote the Pitchfork article in 1996 even said that HE was taken aback by seeing Cornell in person in the early 1990s, where it seemed like this amber aura emanated from the guy and everyone just stared.

I was re-reading some old interviews in the last few days, and in one Spin article Chris spoke at length about a pretty bad PCP episode he had when he was 13. He holed himself up in his room and was practically agoraphobic, and couldn't really talk about it to anyone since he didn't want to get in trouble for taking PCP. He's said he went two years after that without any friends at all and spent all of his time in his room. That's the kind of thing that never leaves you, no matter how successful you become. In his words, he was raised by two alcoholics, and he started drinking at 13. He was the youngest of six kids and it was the 70s, when parents let their kids run feral. I have seen him in those kinds of meet and greet events and he was absolutely not comfortable there. But he did have some hell of an aura that made him instantly magnetic. Thayil was intimidating, but Cornell was just closed off. Always seemed so incredibly internal, and that's probably why I was drawn to him and his lyrics, as much as the gorgeous looks.
I was kind of obsessed with him through most of the 90s, and I even used to drive by his house hoping for a sighting. As long as I lived in Seattle, never once ran into him anywhere (though did see Matt Cameron in a Peet's). I find it disturbing that he's not going to be buried there.
Have any of his bandmates had anything to say yet?
by Anonymous | reply 536 | May 21, 2017 2:21 PM |
No-one has answered the question as to how tox results could possibly be returned before a funeral on May 26. It's a good question. Is the funeral date just a news wind-up?
by Anonymous | reply 537 | May 21, 2017 2:29 PM |
Why would they need to hold the body? I assume they took any pertinent forensic samples should further testing be necessary.
by Anonymous | reply 538 | May 21, 2017 3:09 PM |
Not sure about US law, [R538], but in the UK the body cannot be released to family etc before a coroner has made a final report. Occasionally, a coroner's findings mean that criminal charges may be laid - in which case the police then have jurisdiction over the body. Only after the police have finished any criminal investigations can the body be released (by the police) back to coroner - who is then able to release said body to the family/appointee for burial.

Thanks for that link, R527. I had that Details mag and threw it out recently, along with a bunch of other media on the band that I had been carting around for ages. I recall reading that one the first time and being a little taken aback at just how deep his troubles went. Susan did seem to be a good stabilizing force for him, but one thing I will say about his second wife, was that fatherhood also seemed to ignite him and give him good reasons to stop playing the recluse. I never saw photos of Chris smiling until he had a family.
by Anonymous | reply 540 | May 21, 2017 3:27 PM |
He didn't have kids with Susan? (Don't know.)
I'm actually a fan of Hollywood Forever cemetery, but it is absolutely the wrong place for Chris - though apparently not for what he turned into. They have shows there and Day of the Dead. It's celebrity, but in a zaney, mostly old-timely, almost Pirates of the Caribbean Disneyland ride way.

I think it's fair to say Cornell was very much against turning into the kind of person who would get buried at Hollywood Forever, though whether he changed or whether his widow just never understood that, who knows.
by Anonymous | reply 543 | May 21, 2017 3:51 PM |
Cornell has a 17 year old daughter with Susan. I hope his second wife didn't manage to exclude her from her fair share of her father's estate. She's a minor and the courts would not look favorably on favoring some children over others.

I listened to some Soundgarden and I'm not about to deify this guy. What is it with crazy fans and their blinders? He abandoned his first child and then killed himself and left his second family broken. If that doesn't make him a failure as a parent, I don't know what does.

I'm concerned about the post detailing ill effects of Ativan - namely seeing crocodiles. That's not funny.
Lord knows what went on with CC - how much of what and when and why. But I'd be concerned about taking prescription medication that really does have the capacity to bring on psychosis without warning and at the prescribed dosage (I refer to the post upthread re the crocodiles). Are there no other alternatives?

I said it in George Michael thread too 'prescription drugs kill more than illegal drugs'
by Anonymous | reply 556 | May 21, 2017 5:37 PM |
Every medication has some people who have bad side effects, if he was given a prescribed dosage I don't see how he would all of a sudden get new side effects if he had taken it before. Ativan is more common to have odd effects in elderly people, so someone in their 60's is going to react differently than someone in their 40's.
Toxicology reports will tell a lot more, or if he was combining it with something else. There is a lot we will never know, like why did he have the equipment to kill himself so handy if it was spur of the moment.
by Anonymous | reply 557 | May 21, 2017 5:38 PM |
So the wife believes Ativan could be the issue?
My personal experiences with Ativan are not stellar. I took it for 3 months. There were blocks of time that were missing, always. I'd read insane texts on my cell, that I never ever recall sending, nor would I send them under normal circumstances, and friends and neighbors would tell me of me either visiting them, or them visiting me, where I would have very odd conversationss that made no sense, or phone calls that made no sense. Same thing happened with Ambien, by the way.
The final time that I took an Ativan, I did so on an airplane, flying from NY, to LA. I honestly have no idea how I got off the plane, got my luggage, got an Uber, and got home. I have no recollection of it at all, whatsoever.

What r557 said. Who travels with suicide equipment? What's a carabiner?
by Anonymous | reply 566 | May 21, 2017 6:24 PM |
According to TMZ, Chris Cornell used "red elastic exercise band" to take his own life after performing at a concert in Detroit Wednesday night. Sources tell the site that the SOUNDGARDEN frontman secured the band attached to a carabiner to the top of his hotel bathroom door. A carabiner is a device commonly used by mountain climbers which they attach to a belt to keep them from falling. The device can withstand enormous weight. Cornell jammed the door shut with the carabiner at the top of the frame. The carabiner was jammed so tight it left an indentation in the door frame.
by Anonymous | reply 567 | May 21, 2017 6:28 PM |
What's a carabiner?
A metal loop used for rockclimbing and attaching one elastic rope to another.
Goodness, simply Googling the word results in Cornell news.

I have a travel set of rubber exercise bands that I bring with me for work travel and I use in hotels. Included in the set is a carabiner-like device which you can use in a door frame to do things like rows, etc. Also the heavy duty hooks at the ends of the bands might be called a carabiner by some people. Could be that he had one of these sets in his room for exercise and when the mood struck he had an easy way to off himself.
by Anonymous | reply 569 | May 21, 2017 6:38 PM |
The more information comes out about this, the more it appears that he planned it.
I can understand traveling with exercise bands. Plenty of people do. But mountain climbing equipment? No.
I want to say something that may not fly over well, but it is the truth. Some people have been planning their suicide for ages. I know that if I am ever in a situation where I am diagnosed with an unbearable, and painful illness, or if I am ever told I have dementia, which several relatives had, I'd take my own life. I can definitely understand doing it while depressed. I never did (obviously), but I seriously considered it.
Some people know when they've had enough of "this". They made a decision to check out years ago when the time came. It sucks that there were children left behind, a wife, and people who loved him. But when someone decides that this is it, they decide.
We may not even know if he had been diagnosed with some terminal illness. Heck, his wife may not even know yet.
by Anonymous | reply 570 | May 21, 2017 6:40 PM |
Wow, [R567], the carabiner, exercise band, jamming it into the door so hard it left an indent--and all those details--are very disturbing.
It sounds very premeditated. I wouldn't even know you could kill yourself that way, even if I wanted to do such a thing and had *both* of those things on hand.
Did he google how to commit suicide or something?
It's sounding so much now that he had planned to do this (fairly in advance of that last concert) and didn't want anyone to stop him.
It does not sound like spur of the moment Ativan psychosis or whatever that just occurred at the hotel afterwards.
I hope the investigators release all the info--including what was found on his computer, etc. and find out how long he was really planning this. Very sad....
*P.S. Can someone please start a "Chris Cornell Dead at 52--Part 2" thread please? There's clearly much more to cover/discuss here and this thread will be closed soon.......
by Anonymous | reply 571 | May 21, 2017 6:42 PM |
R570, my point was that it looks like people are saying he travelled with a carabiner which is being reported as something used in mountain climbing when, in fact, the carabiner was probably part of his exercise kit. Personally I believe the reporters are misrepresenting the carabiner. Perhaps he did plan it all, but I don't think he had mountain climbing equipment with him!
by Anonymous | reply 572 | May 21, 2017 6:43 PM |
R572 Thank you! Carabiners aren't JUST mountain climbing equipment, jesus. My dog's leash has a carabiner on the end. I have several I use as keychains. They're handy for all kinds of things. Have you people never set foot in a hardware store?

His widow was all over social media within hours of his death. IIRC, she called one of Chris's security guards to tell him this, and the security guard broke down the door to Chris's room.
I can only say it doesn't mesh. Those hotels have security details crawling the corridors. All the security guard would've had to do is call reception to report a possible injury, and the door would've been opened faster and easier. But then the security guard wouldn't've been first on the scene to discover the body.
