Oh good. Now the millennial deplorables can enjoy the same shit their parents and grandparents loved so much.
All name calling aside, I liked the show and watched it, but not regularly. I was much younger and I was tending to more important things at the time, like getting drunk, getting laid, or snorting some excellent cocaine.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | April 28, 2017 6:43 PM |
Barr said Dan faked his death. She already revealed how she would bring it back. Mark would have died in Iraq. Roseanne and Jackie would be pot farmers, etc.
I'm all for these 90s revivals, The Hollywood Reporter lists them and confirms this story now, but Barr is a Trump supporting nut. I know the people who made Roseanne would be behind this revival and not her boyfriend, but still.

I'll watch this because I loved the early seasons of the show. I don't have high hopes, though. Roseanne is one of those people who needs strong executives to contain her chaotic creative impulses. I don't see that happeneing here.

She's quite progressive on many topics. She's left-of-left and setting aside the really batshit crazy/incoherent stuff she sometimes spouts off now that she's a bit older, a lot of her views make sense to me, or did at one point (anti-military intervention, pro-labor rights, anti-corporatization of healthare and government, decriminalize all drugs, etc. etc.).

Darlene's character always seemed gay, just closeted. Plenty of lesbians date guys when they are young.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | April 28, 2017 9:27 PM |
How exactly are they going to do this? I thought the series finale made quite clear that Dan had died (and that the entire last season had just been part of a book Roseanne had been writing), so I don't know how, unless Dan will appear only as a ghost, they intend to do new episodes featuring John Goodman. And speaking of Goodman, I seem to recall reading that he was quite miserable on the show the last couple of seasons, so if true I'm a bit shocked that he was willing to agree to come back for this update (since we all know he's never exactly lacked for work). Perhaps they're offering him a shitload of money too good to turn down.
[quote]I picture DJ living in Roseanne's basement, spending all of his time on alt.right subreddits and playing Warcraft.
I guess the rumor that Darlene will now be gay means they wouldn't make DJ gay instead (which is Roseanne had reportedly wanted to do with him in the final season).

Re: Natalie West
"Natalie West was cast as Roseanne’s best friend and co-worker, Crystal Anderson. Crystal was consistently unlucky in love (with several failed marriages in her past) and her character alternated between naïve and just plain goofy. The character of Crystal was conceived during the original “pitch” meetings before the Roseanne show was sold – after all, it’s a golden rule of sitcoms that every main character needed a wacky friend or neighbor to “bounce” off. However, as the series progressed, it became evident that not only did Laurie Metcalf (“Jackie”) and Roseanne Barr have better chemistry, it was also easier for the writers to concoct situations involving Roseanne and her sister than Roseanne and her best friend (especially since Crystal had a young son to care for). When Roseanne married Tom Arnold and he joined the cast as Arnie, Sandra Bernhard was brought aboard as Arnie’s free-wheeling love interest (Nancy) in order to provide story lines for Roseanne’s new hubby. With Jackie acting as Roseanne’s best friend and Nancy providing the wackiness quotient, there wasn’t much left for Crystal to do, so Natalie West was eliminated from the opening credits after Season Four and reduced to “recurring character” status."
I don't know that there's any beef between Roseanne and Natalie. Natalie was at the Season 1 DVD Release Party.

It would make more sense for DJ to have gone to Iraq and come back a hardcore Republican. That would play nicely against Roseanne's character's supposed to being liberal. However, if Barr now leans Right...

I think this whole thing is basically talk Roseanne is putting out there in hoping that there's interest and that someone will pick it up.
Would any of the actors even want to come back?
There would actually be a good opportunity to tell the story of Darlene having settled, marrying her high school sweetheart, struggling to raise her family in a Trump world, and dealing with never making it out of Lanford and living a life she swore she wouldn't. Roseanne could be the overbearing mother/Grandmother and Bev can replace Nana Mary as the Great Grandmother who taunts her daughter.
Becky obviously takes over the role as single Aunt who can't hold on to a man or a job.
So yeah, it becomes a tale of how we pass on our shit to our kids and our kids eventually become us.

I can't wait for this. Roseanne was very representative of most of its viewers. Best of all, it was very funny. The episode where Becky ran away with Mark was electrifying, with the build-up of Dan's losing his bike shop.
Alcoholic Mark has run off after finding out that Becky was having an affair with her college-grad, white collar co-worker. With a kid to raise on her own now, Becky moves back in with Dan and Roseanne. She has a lot debt because she always has to have the best car, smartphone, etc. Roseanne has become a writer, now running a popular blog. She makes quite a bit of money from advertisers. Dan is still working construction, unable to retire, especially now that Becky's moving back in. Darlene has a wife now, and they share a house with David, whose in charge of their 5 kids. Darlene works for herself, designing websites from home. DJ went to Iraq. He's now working as a military recruiter and feeling terrible about it. Jackie has gotten back with Booker. (Special Guest Star Appearance!!!)
by Anonymous | reply 100 | April 29, 2017 4:27 AM |
R100, that's a great storyline. They should get you to write the episodes.
So far they've only announced Roseanne, John Goodman and Sara Gilbert for this revival, but I can't imagine they will do it without Laurie Metcalf (who's currently appearing to rave reviews on Broadway in "A Doll's House, Part 2"). Hopefully they will make her an offer she can't refuse. As for Johnny Galecki, I could see him being at least willing to make one appearance as David (and Clooney as Booker would be quite the "get" indeed).

Sudden wealth will do that to the poorest of people. Roseanne owns a profitable nut farm in Hawaii and is quite rich = she turned rightwing, more concerned about her money and properties than anything else.
It's all quite ironic, considering the show was so much about struggling working class people. She has not been that for years, which is fine, but she completely abandoned the show's values a long time ago.

This was my understanding as well, although it was planned for earlier in the series run. Reportedly, Roseanne planned to have DJ come out. The actor was uncomfortable about it and asked her not to do it. He was so young that she respected his wishes and had Beverly the grandmother come out instead (which was totally anticlimactic and something of a headscratcher).

Look, Roseanne is nuts - but genius most often comes right up to the line of insanity. As long as she gets on mood stabilizers and relinquishes enough creative control to producers and writers (as in the earlier seasons, not the later seasons when she had total control), there is a good chance this will be great. You can't take her earlier success away from her, just put enough safeguards in place so this reunion continues that success, rather than ruin the show's legacy. I'm hopeful this reunion wouldn't have been greenlit without making sure Roseanne was in check first.

There is a way they could write that storyline. Mark could have joined the military right after the original series ended which was in 1997. I'm guessing Mark would have been in his mid to late 20s at that point. There are plenty of cases of people joining the military after age 25.

by Anonymous | reply 116 | April 29, 2017 1:18 PM |
Why does he have to be killed in Iraq? It's make more sense for Mark to have been killed falling off a roof. Or having a piano fall on him. Like Sonny, Crystal's first husband, who got cemented into the bridge. That's a Roseanne storyline.
by Anonymous | reply 117 | April 29, 2017 1:27 PM |
And would they start from the last episode nonsense? I know, I know - John faked his death (yeah, right), but what about the rest?
by Anonymous | reply 118 | April 29, 2017 1:31 PM |
Are they going to have Roseanne and Dan raising Little Jerry and the others just drop in whenever? It doesn't seem like there's a situation there for them to be a situation comedy.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | April 29, 2017 1:42 PM |
How exactly does one fake one died of a heart attack?
They could write a new Mark and make do make him ugly, the opposite of what they did with Becky, (recast ugly with pretty)
So Arnie and Nancy will be back?
The thing that's most odd is Sara Gilbert decided not to do more of the Big Bang Theory (in which she was excellent) because she and the writers agreed it was too difficult for them to keep up the high quality of storylines for her character. Indeed her character was one of the few that humanized Sheldon and could best him (the other being his mother)

I hope that it's picked up by a streaming website. That way if it is a massive fail it won't be as noticeable if it were on network television. I'd like to see what the Connor's are up to in Trump's america. I'd also like to see what changes from the series finale will be worked into the reboot.

Roseanne did a pilot with Goodman in 2012, "Downwardly Mobile" that wasn't picked up. She had a guarantee in her contract and got a big payout. She and her boyfriend wrote the script. She blamed Hollywood for not being able to handle her views in it for its not being picked up.
Roseanne trashed Goodman a few years ago, claiming he was a forehead and always drunk on set. I couldn't believe he agreed to work with her again. I think the cast knows she's crazy.

Michael Fishman who played DJ is still employed by Roseanne.
What's this about her wanting him to be gay? Never heard that before.
by Anonymous | reply 124 | April 29, 2017 2:29 PM |
Roseanne has said for years she was going to have DJ be gay. It was mentioned during the run of the show which at the time would have been a major deal.
Roseanne and Dan probably run several Loose Meat Sandwich places and being small business owners in the Midwest fell on economic hardships, didn't want to give their employees benefits because it cut into their profits and turned into Trumpers who shout, "Build the wall."

R113, I agree the show could be a success if there are enough safeguards in place to protect it from Roseanne's crazy. However I don't see her agreeing to do this unless she has final say on everything.

Mark enlisting isn't so far-fetched. At lot of people went straight up crazy nationalistic after 9-11. And the Bush admin dropped a lot of standards to recruit and approve new enlistees. If Roseanne were brave enough to have a storyline where the family was bitter about the WMD lies and general mismanagement of the war, I'd applaud her.

They don't even have to go nationalistic. Military service is an escape for a lot of young men who are struggling with a career or finances. If a guy doesn't have a lot of job prospects, he can join the military and make a career out of it, getting training and if he stays with them, an early retirement.

R132, true, but that would make more sense as a storyline for DJ who, last we knew, was interested in film. Mark was a skilled mechanic and wouldn't need the military for a career. I could see DJ not getting anywhere and deciding to enlist to not be a burden on the family.
Someone's idea upthread of Mark becoming a military contractor makes more sense.

Roseanne, Dan and Jackie are the show. The kids can easily come in and out. The adults were the ones mostly discussing politics.
It's not totally uncommon that the kids could still end up in the same small town and just visit occasionally.
I do think it would be fun to discover she's still friends with the other women in the original series from Crystal to Vonda/Nancy and have them appear as well.
by Anonymous | reply 135 | April 29, 2017 3:10 PM |
Roseanne was never much of an actress but it was ok since she was playing herself and the show was relatable. Now, she's a completely different person who has nothing in common with the blue collar housewife. I don't know if I can stand to watch anyone who rabidly supports Trump on my tv screen. But I'd be interested in the lives of the kids and Jackie (and Dan, if he is somehow reanimated....).

Roseanne never said he died in the war. After the Iraq War II there was a huge demand for private contractors to rebuild the infrastructure of Iraq. A skilled mechanic would be quite an asset. by Anonymous | reply 148 | April 29, 2017 3:29 PM |
I think the only way this works is if they go back to the roots of the show about a lower middle class family struggling and living in America. Vintage Roseanne focused on Roseanne's relationship with Jackie, Dan, and mainly her two daughters. Lecy Goranson and Sara Gilbert were both talented actresses, even when they were younger, and were able to carry off those storylines. Poor Michael Fishman merely looked like he could be Roseanne's son. He was never an actor and they wisely made DJ a minor supporting character.
I'd act like the last two seasons were all a dream and focus on what made the show work back in the day. When I watch reruns, I stop around the 94-95 dates of episodes. You can see a once great show start to falter.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | April 29, 2017 3:40 PM |

I remember that too. I had graduated college a few months before 9/11 and two guys that I knew went into the military after 9/11. I've only kept in touch with one of the guys and he turned on Bush later on. Also, my brother had a friend who was in his late 20s and working as a cop when 9/11 happened. Wasn't Roseanne on the anti-Bush train? I vaguely recall her bashing him in an interview.

Race-wise, not so much. They had the token black couple friends, that was it. The characters were there only to 'prove' the Conners weren't bigots. They never had any relevance to storylines at all.

183, the show did address race beyond just having token black friend for Dan and Roseanne. There was one episode where DJ was in a school play, and he didn't want to kiss his co-star who was black. His dad came to talk to Roseanne at the loose meat restaurant, and when he pounded on the glass door, Roseanne first assumed him to be a robber. This left Roseanne questioning whether she might be a racist and if so, if this had any influence on DJ's current behavior.

Horrid idea. I don't think anybody gives a goddamn flying fuck about Roseann and her loser family anymore. I myself was never a fan of the show when it was in its heyday. A show about a bunch of ugly white trash creeps didn't appeal to me. But it was supposed to be SO original and edgy; a tv sitcom where the family is ugly and weird and lower class! Why it's pure genius! I watched it a few times; I thought John Goodman and Laurie Metcalf were very talented. But it was so overrated. This "revival" sounds like an act of desperation. I guess the principles really need the money.

I don't think she's rightwing as much as she is fed up with 2 parties having 'anointed' candidates and they seem to both agree to the terms, which is why e.g. Kerry never contested the shenanigans that were apparent when he won until the 11th hour when he lost.
The problem is that our non-anointed, non-vetted candidate happens to be Donald Trump. We might be trading one overlord for another, depending on how the Russian influence stuff plays out.

Dan and Chucky are now gay partners. Dan craved Black cock all along. Roseanne and Ann Marie are in a lesbian relationship fighting over who gets to be the butch one. Jackie and Nancy finally get together for scissoring on the regular. Darlene is also a lesbian who is into old snatch, so she's munching on her old grade school teacher Miss Crane's punane. David is devastated by Darlene leaving him, so he's a lonely alcoholic. Crystal and DJ are in the corner and being ignored as usual.

The show was revolutionary. Before Roseanne aired, as the Norman Lear series tapered off (Alice, One Day at A Time), every 80s sitcom family lived in a mcmansion. The parents were upper-class, wealthy white collar workers who somehow didn't need a nanny to help raise their designer-clothes-clad kids. Perhaps this was a continuation of night-time soaps about rich people (Dynast, Dallas). Until Roseanne came on the scene, the middle class and lower class were invisible. Not all the episodes were wrapped up with bow at the end. Some grim story lines carried over several episodes: Roseanne's unemployment, Dan's losing the bike shop, etc, and these things mirrored real problems the middle and lower class were dealing with. Most importantly, though, the show was funny and well-written.
How often did you ever see an overweight female main character (outside of Facts of Life)? Here was a woman who was unapologetically overweight by society's standards, and she didn't gaf what anyone thought. (It was and still is OK for a male lead character to be overweight, but his wife better be skinny and traditionally pretty).
The last season was awful. I understood what she was trying to do, but they didn't pull it off well. She wanted to show how the sitcom's money and fame changed her life: what it's like to suddenly to from poor and invisible to rich and famous, how society enjoys building stars and then tearing them down, how being rich and famous doesn't solve all your problems, how "old money" sometimes continues to look down on "new money".
Unfortunately her egomaniac antics have tarnished her legacy, and I don't feel the show gets the credit it deserves.
by Anonymous | reply 242 | May 1, 2017 3:40 AM |
R242 yeah even John Goodman said that he didn't think the show would be big hit because when he was in late 1987 "all those big primetime soap opera shows like Dallas and Dynasty were dominating the ratings with beautiful rich people in them".

I like the idea of Darlene ending up just like Roseanne - trapped in Landford having never lived up to her full potential because she married her high school sweetheart and got stuck with a family. It's realistic and shows that kids often do end up exactly like the parents they hate so much.
As Becky had no kids at the end of the first series, she should end up exactly like Jackie . Alone, going from one man (and job) after another.

by Anonymous | reply 252 | May 1, 2017 4:56 PM |
If "Roseanne" was REALLY "revolutionary" it would have made Darlene a lesbian. Sara Gilbert gave off one of the biggest lesbian vibes ever seen on a tv sitcom and her character Darlene was homely, surly, sullen and sarcastic. It was hard to believe that any man would be attracted to her. The whole David/Darlene storyline just seemed forced and implausible. It would have been so much more interesting to have Darlene be a lesbian; her family and the town she lived in was white trash, so for her to be gay in such an environment would really have made for great comedy and drama. Darlene as an out lesbian amidst homophobic white trash...I think that would have been quite something.

Very uneven show, first 3 seasons the best. Loved the stuck up neighbor, the sexy little dude in a one shot who went on to be Bulldog on Frazier; loved Bonnie and Crystal and the beauty shop girls. Laurie seems weird and is a fair actress, not an excellent one. Why do you think Dan is gay? Roseanne said she was sick of the show and never wanted to do tv again. She drove the early producers nuts. I would focus on the earthy blue collar women and add some hot white trash men. I think I would get a new set. No Nancy; Roseanne's mom IS too manic, clooney will not come back; she's too big a cunt busy bearding.

I really think 10-13 episodes would make the reboot much more interesting and relevant than only an 8 episode order, but maybe they are worried about Roseanne staying on her meds and don't want to overdo it.

Seasons 2-5 hold up really well. Season 6 is spotty but still some great episodes (like the pot episode). The first season is too cheesy and the last 2 are too hammy and all the characters have been dumbed down beyond recognition.

John Goodman did the pilot AFTER Roseanne trashed him out on Twitter, but he's stayed loyal to her. The only reason Roseanne went on a tirade about Goodman was because he was profiled in an article in the New Yorker or the times when he was doing a play and tom Arnold was quoted extensively and was identified as Goodmans closest friend. Not a single negative word about Roseanne or the show but Barr saw Goodmans friendship with Arnold as a betrayal.
The show went off the rails after Arnold left. The loose meat diner was based on the ones in Arnold's home state of Iowa. Arnold and Barr fight/communicate on Twitter from time to time and I think two of roseannes older kids speak to him.
The 1995-96 season of Roseanne was supposed to be the final season which is why lecy goranson came back. Remember the season before Roseanne was going to have a girl and the first few episodes of the 95-96 season mentioned it. What changed was Jerry Garcia dying in the summer of 95. Roseanne and Dan were supposed to have one last fun weekend/hurrah together before their daughter was born and they were going to attend a grateful dead concert and Roseanne was going to go into early labor at the concert and have the baby at the outdoor concert.
When Roseanne decided at the last minute to have a 9th season it threw some of the cast into chaos because they had projects lined up. Goranson didn't come back for the last season because she wanted to finish college and Goodman could only appear in a limited number of shows. Despite that Roseanne wanted to have a 10th season of the show where she would lose the house in lanford and her and dj would move into a trailer park in Las Vegas .
When Ben Thomas went to court a few years back to modify the the financial/custody arrangement they had with their son buck the court records showed that Roseanne was getting a minimum of $500k a month from syndication profits.
The story told to the press on lecy goransons departure from the show in 1992 was that she was leaving for college. That's only partially true. She had a relationship with a married behind the scenes guy on the show that started when she was 16 and ended very badly. She was traumatized for a time and didn't want to come back. Gilbert started Yale the next year and the show worked around her school schedule and they would've done the same for goranson the year before. Howard stern asked Roseanne about it and she was startled he knew about it and it was one of the few times she was speechless about something and changed the subject very quickly.

The last episode convoluted things a bit. I'd say write off the entire last season and pick up where the season before left off. It's not as if fans will give a shit - most hated the last season, anyway.
by Anonymous | reply 309 | May 19, 2017 1:56 PM |
They can do away with the last episode's reveal (and the entire last season, really) just like they seemingly erased the entire show with that last episode.
I would make it where Roseanne suffered a mental breakdown somewhere before season 9 and that season was her hallucination.
Great stuff for Rosie to play with and could be based on her lice, since she has had several breakdowns.
They need to make her like Buscemi's character in "Horace and Pete". So much they could do by playing up her Roseanne's crazy.
I would also bring politics full on. Roseanne could keep her political POV (think Archie Bunker) and the rest of the family could sway towards all areas of the political spectrum.
So much poyential here!

There are lots of clever ways they can get around the last season and/or Dan's, "death," however I'll bet that if Roseanne is in charge they won't use any of them. She seems more the type to just mimic the "It was a dream," story line because she thinks referencing that is funny and clever.
by Anonymous | reply 314 | May 19, 2017 3:12 PM |
She could claim the entire last three seasons were a dream or a psychotic episode.
by Anonymous | reply 315 | May 19, 2017 3:28 PM |
I really hope they don't go with the "Dan ran out on his family and faked his death," thing. That pretty much goes against everything the Dan character ever was. It sort of makes him out to be like his father who he was the opposite of.
by Anonymous | reply 316 | May 19, 2017 3:32 PM |
I can't stand the actress Roseann. Has anyone covered why they're bringing back this show. I doubt there's anyone who was wishing this would come back. It's all very weird how uncreative Hollywood is becoming.
by Anonymous | reply 317 | May 19, 2017 3:35 PM |
R316 Dan's father did it to him. Like father, like sun. Also, perhaps the pressures of Roseanne's psychotic break took too much of a toll on him and he opted for "flight".
If they're going to bring this classic back they need to make it mean and gritty.
Roseanne had a psychotic break and Dan jumped ship soumds like the perfect syart for a "Roseanne" of the new millenium.

by Anonymous | reply 319 | May 19, 2017 3:49 PM |
Yes, R318 and as I said above, it goes against Dan's character. His whole thing was that he was the man his father wasn't.
If they're going to go with a story about a psychotic break than they don't even need to go the route of Dan faking his death and leaving. Just say she had a psychotic break and the entire last season, including the last episode, was that break from reality.
by Anonymous | reply 320 | May 19, 2017 3:58 PM |
That's what I prefer, R20. They could even play with the two Beckys running gag and incorporate it into her mental breakdown. Perhaps her symptoms started when the new Becky arrived.
They can do so much with this while keeping it socially and politically relevant.
by Anonymous | reply 321 | May 19, 2017 4:03 PM |
Dan being dead is an alternate fact!
by Anonymous | reply 322 | May 19, 2017 4:04 PM |
[quote]Perhaps her symptoms started when the new Becky arrived.
Didn't they do that with DJ? Like when they jumped into the future and he was a mental case and it stemmed from the alternate Becky?
The bit about using Sarah Chalke though as part of her break from reality would actually play nicely. Every time Roseanne is having one we'd see Sarah instead of Lecy as Becky.
But it sounds like theyve written a new character for Sarah. She could be some random chick who steals Becky's identity.
OR.
Maybe Becky should end up being the surprise Lesbian and Sarah can be her girlfriend.
by Anonymous | reply 323 | May 19, 2017 5:04 PM |
R323 Yes! They did use the Beckys in that DJ subplot. Doing it again would both open up so many possibilities and be a sort of nod to that, too.
I would have Sarah Chalke play both a new character and Becky when Roseanne cracks or perhaps in dream sequences/memories of Roseanne's breakdown.
Her insanity would be reinforced by having her hallucinate her daughter as someone else in their lives.
by Anonymous | reply 324 | May 19, 2017 5:18 PM |
Having Sarah play a new character who commits identity theft against Lecy's Becky would be hilarious.
by Anonymous | reply 325 | May 19, 2017 8:06 PM |
R325 While Roseanne hallucinates.
by Anonymous | reply 326 | May 19, 2017 8:31 PM |
Chalke could play a Doctor or Nurse or even a Social Worker in the Institution Roseanne is at and therefore she subsequently replaces her with Becky in her snaps from reality. Maybe Roseanne's crazy is so crazy that she lures Chalke's character into her life and makes her a part of their family, which is a way for Chalke's character to get sucked in.
It's too bad though that this idea has already been used... going back to the Identity Theft that I mentioned above. A great idea would have been if she steals Becky's Identity, Becky is able to track her down, maybe with the help of Jackie who now does Private Investigation work... And Becky being Becky, is needy and finds Chalke's character fascinating and befriends her anyway. But again, that's already been used.

As the seasons progressed and she got more famous, subsequently fired the talented writers and producers, and gave into the multiple voices in her head, things went downhill. There's a lot riding on this reunion for ABC and they are already promoting the hell out of it a year out - I'm sure there is every safeguard in place to keep Roseanne happy, healthy, just creatively satisfied enough without being in control, and insured from here to eternity.
by Anonymous | reply 337 | May 19, 2017 11:54 PM |
What made AIF work was that the actor playing Archie didn't really believe the right wing views of his character. I don't think Roseanne would be too happy with the truth about Trump coming out of the mouths of the other characters. My guess is Roseanne is going to be the head writer and producer of this show. She wants to be in control. We saw what happened when she and Arnold and then she alone took control of her show. It totally jumped the shark.
by Anonymous | reply 338 | May 19, 2017 11:54 PM |
Roseanne doesn't have full control of anything. ABC isn't stupid and she no longer has the clout she once did. Rosie is so lucky they're doing this and I'm sure she's savvy enough to not fuck it up.

I got sick one time while I was on vacation and watched a rerun of Roseanne because I was looking for something light to watch and cheer me up.
It was the episode where Darlene goes into labor prematurely and her and her baby's lives are in danger or something ridiculous like that. I thought wtf am I watching?

No one in Hollywood has any creativity. HBO sucks; very few of premium channels have anything above average. This looks like a mess. Laurie is a lousy actress, the same in everything she does. None of the lead cast except Goodman can act. DJ was a terrible actor and dumb character. The guest stars on this series had more talent than any of the leads. Crystal, the stuck up short lived neighbor, the factory and the beauty shop girls were funny. This series does not hold up; the last 4 seasons were terrible.

R344 you go from saying in a previous post that Laurie is a fair actress to now saying she's a lousy one, ha. And no, she doesn't do the same thing with every character. Her Jackie was not the same as her character on Desperate Housewives which also wasn't done the same way as she portrayed Annie Wilkes.

Thanks R48. Metcalfe is the real deal. Except the Barney Fife character Jackie became in the final seasons (not sure about the origins of that development), she can play a great variety of characters with very nuanced subtlety. That takes true talent and hard work.

Metcalf is awesome as a second banana. Look for the Norm Show, she stole every scene and was hysterical. Look at Big Bang Theory as Sheldon's mother and one of the two or three people that can actually bring Sheldon down to Earth and act normally.

Everyone saying that the Conners would be Trump voters clearly didn't watch the show or grasp anything it was trying to portray. A couple of characters maybe, but not the majority.

Not sure it means much since it was a later season but I hated Metcalf on "Absolutely Fabulous". Had to turn the episode off, it was so screechy and awful. She's better than that but she also brings a strange pall to every character. You can never buy her as "sunny".
by Anonymous | reply 354 | May 20, 2017 5:30 PM |
I hope it's good and a success because all of the ABC sitcoms currently airing, which I used to like, SUCK. And that includes "Modern Family" (it's been bad for the last 4 seasons), "The Goldbergs" (never was that funny but I used to enjoy the actress who portrays Bev), "The Middle" (never as good as "Roseanne" but I liked the Axl character and his near nudity, also thought Eden Sher was good as the teenage girl). "Speechless" is one of the worst shows I've ever seen. That Brit actress is horrible and not sympathetic.

Roseanne is a born contrarian who still defends that god awful final season. The whole concept of Dan faking his own death strongly suggests that this revival will be more in line with the show's last two seasons after it jumped the shark.

Metcalf on how the reunion came to be.
The Roseanne reboot has many fans buzzing about what the classic sitcom will be like in this modern age, and star Laurie Metcalf recently revealed how quickly it all came together.
Roseanne is coming back for an eight-episode revival in 2018 on ABC over 20 years after its final episode aired. All of the series’ main cast members will be coming back, including Roseanne Barr, John Goodman, Laurie Metcalf, Sara Gilbert, Lecy Goranson, Michael Fishman, and Sarah Chalke.
Metcalf revealed in a Today interview this week that the plans for a Roseanne reboot came together in a flash with Goodman appearing on Gilbert’s show, The Talk, and discussing the possibility.
“I think it was just a fluke that John Goodman was on Sara Gilbert’s show, and they started talking, ‘would you do a reunion’, ‘well yes I would, would you’ and Sara got on the phone and called everybody, and everybody said yes right away,” Metcalf said.
by Anonymous | reply 387 | June 1, 2017 3:00 PM |
It's only 8 episodes? I wonder if they're just feeling it out to see if it's worth bringing back for an entire season.
To address whether or not Roseanne the character would have voted for Trump... I think they could go that route and it would be in line with the character if and ONLY if it was handled in the following way: She voted for Trump out of protest/in reaction to her shitty life with the belief that something needed to be shaken up. This would reflect all those in the "fly over" states who did the same... and would be consistent with the character's knee jerk reactions.. but ONLY IF she then regretted it as she saw that she was snowed and life would now be worse for her. The Roseanne character did have a habit of making rash decisions that bit her in the ass... but something tells me the real Roseanne wouldn't go for that.

The white trash thing was one of the big problems with the original.
When the show began they were a white working class family trying to make ends meet but not white trash. They both worked hard at their jobs and weren't lazy and trying to get paid for doing nothing. That changed when Roseanne for whatever idiotic reasons that were going on in her head decided to turn the family into white trash. They were suddenly workers who I couldn't root for because they deserved to be fired. It started when Roseanne started working at the restaurant. I don't remember what season that was. I do however bet it had something to do with her taking up with Tom Arnold. His presence in her life was not a good thing. He gave her ridiculous ideas that she probably passed on has her own or maybe even thought they were her own. Either way the show began to suck.
Not only did they become lousy workers but lousy parents as well, which they never were the first couple of years. The only saving grace was the Roseanne/Jackie relationship and even that was never as good as the first couple of years.
I'm not interested in seeing people struggling if they are people who act in ways that show they deserve to struggle because they have no interest in doing a good day's work or being decent parents. Just the same way I'd feel if they showed very rich people who are getting something for nothing and being lousy parents. The thing is it's probably way more true of rich people than it is of hard working class or lower middle or even poor people.
I don't think the show is going to work unless it plays well to people who never saw the first series or are too young to remember. I find it insulting to be told what I remember never happened. Put in the fucking work and come up with a good reason for the last couple of seasons. Isn't that what Roseanne and the writers are getting big bucks for????

by Anonymous | reply 406 | June 1, 2017 9:50 PM |
I disagree R403. The show had some good jokes about Roseanne leaving early or tormenting Leon as a waitress, but for the most part she's still shown as a hard worker. Even Leon has to begrudgingly admit it sometimes. And during that time you see Dan and Roseanne as very caring but flawed parents--part of what drives Becky away is her feeling put upon all the time and then unappreciated when she discovers her parents have no money saved for her for college. I thought the show did an excellent job of showing the ways the Connors were blind to how their economic hardship was affecting their kids BECAUSE they were otherwise close and good parents.
The show started to go off the rails AFTER Tom Arnold left. The Roseanne character changed from a snarky but otherwise genuinely likeable woman to a straight up mean bitch. You totally believe the Roseanne of the early seasons, as much as she picks on her friends and family, would scratch the eyes out of anyone who would hurt them. The Roseanne of the later seasons is ready to scratch their eyes out herself. And Jackie changed from a sometimes neurotic and flaky but otherwise independent and competent woman to a complete nutjob who could barely dress herself without her sister's guidance.

If the real Roseanne stays true to the character Roseanne, there is no way the latter would fall for Trump's bullshit. She'd be the first and loudest person in town mocking him for his fraud trial, refusal to show his taxes, the pussygrabbing comments, his gold toilets, etc.

He was a major part of the show. Didn't Roseanne unofficially adopt him or something? I seem to recall him wanting to live with the Conner family; at first she tells him he has to go home to his mother, but then finds how his mother is abusive to him so she takes him in. And of course there was the absurd storyline about the love affair between him and Darlene. That was REALLY stupid. Darlene should have been a dyke; Sara Gilbert had no chemistry with any male actor. She should have had a girlfriend, not a boyfriend.

R389 that's such an intriguing idea and I'd love to see it pulled off well, but honestly Allen would run rings around the rest of the cast comedically and wouldn't really fit in with their characters either. Tim 'the Toolman' Taylor epitomised the normative & comfortably-off middle-class guy with an entrepreneurial streak; hardly the sort to run with Roseanne and her eccentric brood scrambling to make a living. Perhaps Darlene Conner & Randy Taylor could have had a friendship of sorts, and perhaps Dan & Tim could have hit it off geeking out over hardware, but beyond that it's hard to picture how that would play.
That said, 'Roseanne' and 'Home Improvement' both espoused that destructo-comedy element.
