Been treated for giardia, but still have resistent blastocystis. What I'm learning is that in 2013 medical knowledge of intestinal flora & curing problematic ones is really -- excuse the pun -- shitty, compared to advances in other disease treatment. What intestinal bugs have you had, and how did you get rid of them?
The joy of intestinal parasites

A steady diet of drinking apple cider vinegar mixed with water will cure anything. It is the nastiest tasting stuff, but it does the job.

The antibiotic resistence is rising, and visiting the doctor feels like the early days of AIDS - they try one antibiotic and then another, and another, all of them decimating one's flora and churning the bowels until hopefully the right one is killed.

Hey OP! - I sympathise!
I love eating arse - it's ny weakness I'm afraid - and I've been pretty sexually active over the years - and touch wood! - have never had a standard STI - but I have had Giardia a few times - and recently, blastocystitis.
It took a long time for me to get over it - a few months of chronic gut problems and the runs. Even after they got rid of it - with about three rounds of antibiotics - I then had problems with my gut flora and fauna from the antibiotics and ended up not absorbing some nutrients well. Became chronically low in iron, and also needed B12 supplements.
I've also had threadworms a few times over the years and now always keep the meds for it on hand (wasn't there a weird gut parasite/worm troll here on DL a couple of years or more back?)
You really don't hear very much about the sexually transmitted gut issues - should get more attention. Out of memory though, back in the seventies and eighties, around the time HIV/AIDS started to hit the scene - there was also a term like 'Gay Gut Syndrome' to describe these kind of infections that the medical people were seeing more of in urban areas - but think the term was dropped as it was considered a bit discriminatory and judgey - and then later eclipsed by other events...?

You would get better treatment going to a hospital in a third world. US hospitals are bad at tropical medicine. There is a reason peace corps volunteers get a full treatments worth of malaria proxalisis before going home. More volunteers were dying of malaria upon their return home to the US then abroad. American doctors lack of knowledge coupled with arrogance meant they would ignore infected volunteers claims they had malaria and they lacked knowledge about how to test for it .
First of OP your farts must be horrible. The sulfer byproduct is horrid. Secondly Guiardia is a parasite not a bacteria. Anti biotics are not going to do shit. The condition usually passes on its own but if treatment is necessary you may want to to find a tropical medicine specialist.. You may need to travel to miami or houston to see one.
Thirdly what did you drink to get this? River water?

[quote]back in the seventies and eighties, around the time HIV/AIDS started to hit the scene - there was also a term like 'Gay Gut Syndrome'
Thanks R3. As I recall it was Gay Bowel Syndrome, and yes, The Plague completely wiped it from the scene for a while as people stayed home hugging their T cells!
I got it, I'm fairly certain, from rimming an irresistable number. (Apparently for some people blasto has no symptoms, so they can become Typhoid Marys.) My doctor read that you can't get it from accidently imbibing clorinated pool water, but I read online in some med doc that you can.
Thanks to the person who suggested apple cider vinegar, but I'm leery of putting myself through that torture. I've already tried garlic oil, oregano oil, and saccharomyces boulardii without result.

I remember hearing around the time Reagan was shot that two men I knew were having this kind of sickness. "Amoebas," I was told. My friend who told me called them "CGDs" (Chic Gay Diseases). And not long thereafter, we started hearing about KS and PCP in gay men, drug addicts, and Haitians. Both of the friends who had the CGDs would go on to die from this new illness before it had the name "AIDS."

by Anonymous | reply 11 | April 25, 2017 1:55 PM |
Indeed, in the early 80's, at least in NYC, every other gay man seemed to have 'amoebas.' In my experience, those guys also soon developed ARC and then went on to AIDS and were soon gone. I suspect that outbreak of 'amoebas' was all connected to poorly functioning immune systems.
Are you at least losing weight, OP? Swim suit weather is almost here. That cannot be denied.

Three weeks ago, my vet (who's been heavily involved with all kinds of side research projects with the USDA and Tuskegee U vet school) told me quiet as it's kept, internal and external parasites have developed serious resistance to "just about everything we can throw at them." That it's especially serious with cats because 1) their human caretakers interact closely with their waste materials--particularly feces and vomit; 2) cats are *exquisitely* sensitive to chemical substances, so simply upping dosages on anti-parasitics or increasing application frequency is not an option.
My vet also said in response to human assault on both their environment and ours, the DNA of fleas, ticks, mosquitoes, and parasitic worms and bacteria is changing at a much quicker rate than even a dozen years ago, so they're acquiring total or partial immunity to drugs and sprayed chemicals faster than the drug and agrichemical companies can keep up. For example, a "simple" case of heavy feline or canine tapeworm infestation that ten years ago took 2-4 weeks to eradicate now takes one month minimum before reaching zero eggs in intestine or shedded segments in feces.
Only half-joking, I asked my vet if we're gonna have to go back to DDT and Chlordane. He said it already had been restarted on the qt in Argentina and Brazil, because rainforest decimation and huge cattle herds have created a hellstorm of fleas, biting flies, and cattle ticks on the range. And guess from where the US imports most of its foreign beef?
My awesome vet says between the climate deniers running both our government and Big Bidness, and Big Pharma maximizing profit at the cost of research, and the federal government slashing research and grants funding, we are in for a holy shitstorm of diseases and infestations that only a decade ago we'd thought eradicated or easily managed.

R17 here. OP/R9, clove oil, thyme oil, and food-grade diatomaceous earth are much better antihelminthics than oregano oil. Just be sure to buy it from a reputable source, since the main parasite-nuking ingredients, eugenol and terpenol, are found in lower concentration in the lower quality oils.
Buy from well-established companies that regularly submit their oils to independent labs for mass spec testing. Eden's Gardens, Mountain Rose Herbs, doTERRA, Young Living (though the latter two are MLMs run by high-level Mormons and their distributors can be quite cultlike about their EO products) are great sources for quality essential oils.

Another blasto sufferer here, just last year. The doctor claimed "this sort of thing doesn't make you sick," even though I was obviously ill.
I did a lot of research. The best I found is linked below. The Centre in Australia from which that protocol came has walled itself off from the desperate public. Here's how I handled it.
I ordered the nitazoxanide and secnidazole from a reputable Indian pharmacy (they did not have furazolidone, almost nobody does). I drove to a border town for the Dialgin, although I could have probably found that online as well.
Furazolidone is nearly impossible to find anywhere in the world these days. I had to settle for a combination drug called Dialgin, which is a mix of methylhomatropine (an antispasmodic), diiodohydroxyquinoline (a luminal amoebacide), activated charcoal, and 50 mg furazolidone per tablet. There is another Dialgin sold in Eastern Europe and Russia that is an NSAID - this is not the same drug.
The dosing was 400 mg secnidazole three times daily, nitazoxanide 500 mg twice daily, and Dialgin 1 tab 3 (or even 4)x/day - all for 10 days.
You will take lots of pills. You won't like it. It cost about $150. It did work.

Most recently, I accidentally gave myself mold poisoning. I thought I had just gotten some stomach flu, so I kept drinking water from my Zero Water pitcher to stay hydrated. Ironically it was the water filter in the pitcher itself that was making me sick. I had moved recently, and left the pitcher in storage for a couple of months, before unpacking it and starting to use it again. Apparently, if you use these filters, but then stop using them for some period of time, the insides of the filter can become moldy. It was like having severe food poisoning for over 2 weeks. I couldn't even make it to the bathroom, I was throwing up violently and having diarrhea like every 15 minutes.

For all you apple cider crazies, you do realize there is a semi-toxic level where it can such potassium out of your body and cause osteoporosis? It also does a wonderful job of stripping enamel off of teeth. Most serious is people who turn hypoglycemic quickly.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | April 25, 2017 10:30 PM |
For me it was France (twice), Michigan, and Tenneesse (thrice).
My doctor said that when you have very little flora (whether you were born or it was caused by an illness, or caused by taking medicine) you are more likely to fall ill with food poisoning and all the other bacteria.
Medicine is the number one cause (at leas to Americans) as to why flora decreases, plus with age is another factor.
Now remember that preservatives and pesticides in our foods also wrecked havoc in our intestinal health. This is why Americans often fall ill when they go outside of the country. Because as a nation, we actually have pretty low defenses that are most likely stripped by our own foods.
Fermented foods and drinks are a great source to restore your flora.
I drink milk Kefir everyday and I don't remember the last time I went abroad and fell ill. Kombucha is also a great source for restoring intestinal health and getting rid of all the plastic and glass in our bodies. Also, Reishi mushroom tea is equally effective.
This lady explains why Milk Kefir can help you with your intestinal health and how is done. Apparently both the Bible and the Tora cite it too.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | April 26, 2017 12:48 AM |
I think zero flora is preferable to having to down vile mushroom tea! There was a crazy health nut in our office who drank it. There was mould in the jar and he kept downing it. It gives me the shudders just to recall it.
But I do think a kind of small silent health crisis is going on. The fact that Sydney clinic is overwhelmed is evidence of it. I discussed their protocol with my doctor and he was hesitant about it, calling it the trend du jour with no published scientific papers. He prefers to do a step by step process of trying out different single antbiotics first given the upset they are to the system, and because some people naturally overcome blastocystis in time. But I think people are desperate. I'm getting that way. It's been weeks now.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | April 26, 2017 1:18 AM |
Like some of you, I don't have the stomach for kombucha. But I'm okay with natural sauerkraut, kefir and yogurt. Another thing that helped me a decade ago when I was under the weather was a creature called "effective microorganisms." Look it up. But I also get good results from the use of animal probiotics. I take the one below, eating about a 5mm dollop of paste every other day. a $7 tube lasts for months. It has no flavor and is very convenient.

R3 here -
>> I have had Giardia a few times - and recently, blastocystis.
Asks R14: Is licking strangers' asses really worth it?
As I said R14 - I love eating arse (and playing with it - and fucking it!) - and find it almost irresistible.
I'm mid fifties now - and been doing it for nearly half my life - and seem to have been sick about roughly once every ten years. And as I said - in that time I haven't contracted any other STIs. So for me - well - I know there's a risk - but the risk benefit analysis hasn't stopped me from doing it yet. It may well do so if the infections occur more frequently. nothing is set in stone. will just have to see how I go and how external conditions influence matters...
Apple cider vinegar seems to be touted as a cure all for everything lately - still not convinced it can do all the many things that've been attributed to it - sounds like a laundry list of stuff not unlike those of patent quack medicines from Victorian times!
Read somewhere that papaya/paw paw seeds are also used by indigenous populations in the tropics as an anti-parasitic remedy as well - but not quite sure how many of 'em you're supposed to swallow...more research required! (live sub tropical here - so plenty of papaya trees around the place!)
by Anonymous | reply 39 | April 26, 2017 3:48 AM |

How effective are the kits you can buy at the health food stores? I have a Renew Life ParaGone 15 day kit, that I plan to start next Sunday. Aside from taking the products, an extract of black walnut hulls, clove bud, marshmallow root (?), Orange Peel, and wormwood leaf/stem, and then some capsules of more leaves and stems, it also instructs me to avoid most of my current common foods/drinks, mainly bread and coffee, anything sweet. Lots of water should be consumed.
A Google search (flukes and parasites in our bodies), and a lesson in all the critters that live in our bodies, the majority being detrimental, makes me want to get rid of as many as possible, and I'm hoping this herb and spices approach is effective, and not just some snake oil.
