Campa-Najjar, whose mother is Mexican American and whose father is Palestinian American, says he spent a lot of time speaking to Hispanic voters in his district to get them to the polls. In 2012, the district voted for Obama, but four years later did not show support for Hillary Clinton.
During his time with the Obama administration, Campa-Najjar was a public affairs officer at the Labor Department and also worked in the President's office handling constituent correspondence and being a liaison with the community.
He was also a Director of Communications for the U.S. Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. He tells NBC Latino he hopes to use his experience "to win some hearts and minds," like he did in 2012.

Duncan Hunter sounds like a porn name. As of March 23, he's been under criminal investigation:
The Justice Department has opened a criminal investigation into a California congressman who faces allegations that he spent tens of thousands of dollars in campaign funds on family trips to Hawaii and Italy, private school tuition and dance competitions for his children, and even video games, officials disclosed Thursday.
The lawyers said that Mr. Hunter learned of the possible ethics issues last year and “out of an abundance of caution, he took corrective action,” by repaying about $60,000.
Mr. Hunter’s Democratic opponent in last year’s election tried to make the mounting reports of the congressman’s legal problems a campaign issue. But Mr. Hunter easily won re-election.
Mr. Hunter “may have converted tens of thousands of dollars of campaign funds from his congressional campaign committee to personal use to pay for family travel, flights, utilities, health care, school uniforms and tuition, jewelry, groceries, and other goods, services, and expenses,” said the ethics office, an independent body that House Republicans tried to shut down in January.
A watchdog group, Citizens for Responsibility and Ethics in Washington, brought a complaint with the ethics office last April charging that Mr. Hunter’s campaign spending included family trips to Italy and Hawaii, consulting fees to his wife, payments to his children’s parochial school and $1,300 for video games that he said his teenage son mistakenly charged to a credit card.
Noah Bookbinder, the group’s director, said Mr. Hunter “has shown a blatant disregard for the rules.” He called the case [bold]“the most egregious congressional spending scandal since Aaron Schock,”[/bold] referring to the former Republican congressman from Illinois who gained infamy for decorating his House office in an ornate manner inspired by “Downton Abbey.” Mr. Schock was indicted by the Justice Department last November on 24 criminal counts and has pleaded not guilty.
He also won the seat after his father left it, so nepotism helped this guy. Being a former Marine in Iraq and Afghanistan probably helped him win as well.

Jesus Christ his background is the stuff the media drools about. It's going to be very hard for Hunter to attack him without looking like a racist asshole:
About his mother:
My mother, Abigail Campa, the modest Mexican Catholic daughter of an orphaned migrant farmworker, showed me through a divorce, a broken heart, being broke, different jobs — including working as a family doctor’s receptionist, applying to work at Wal-Mart in her 50s, and eventually working in real estate — that you can dust yourself off and start again. She showed me there’s dignity in a hard day’s work, and that your work doesn’t define you, it reveals you.
About his father:
My father, Yasser Najjar, saw both his parents gunned down right in front of him when he was only eleven years old. Orphaned and outlawed, my father moved across Egypt, Lebanon, and Morocco in search of a new home
American Muslim who has devoted his life to promoting peace between Israel and the Palestinian people. His pain was turned into purpose, to make the world a better place for his children.

His high school teacher showed up in the Buzzfeed comments section and said that he was an incredible singer.
More important than his looks are his work ethics, and his integrity. Ammar was one of my high school students ten years ago, and I had the chance to work with this young man in his first Major Lead Role in his first musical. As I coached and directed Ammar, I watched him work hard to create his character and rise above the negative comments that had been said by some "others" who doubted his ability to pull this performance off. I told him, "Remember, that the best revenge to all the negative talk is to work hard, prove the "doubters" wrong, and be successful. That's exactly what Ammar did as was proven by the continuous standing ovations he had received from Opening Night throughout the run of the entire show even to the Closing Night performance. He will be that same kind of Congressman, of this I am certain. He will have my vote. (BTW - If anyone gets the chance, you should hear this young man sing. He has an amazing voice!)

EL CAJON, Calif. -- Rep. Duncan Hunter's indictment just gave Ammar Campa-Najjar's campaign a huge boost.
The Democratic candidate, a former department of labor aide in the Obama administration, is running against Hunter in the race for the 50th Congressional District.
[bold]Duncan Hunter and his wife, Margaret, were indicted Tuesday on charges related to the misuse of $250,000 worth of campaign funds for personal expenses and the filing of false campaign finance records.
The charges of wire fraud, falsifying records, campaign finance violations and conspiracy were the culmination of a Department of Justice investigation that has stretched for more than a year, during which the Republican congressman from California has maintained his innocence.[/bold]
"I'm happy to see that justice is being dealt. Nobody's above the law, not even a sitting congressman," Campa-Najjar said. "The people of the district deserve better than a congressman who can't follow the law, much less pass and enforce laws."
Campa-Najjar finished second in June's primary, but Hunter's legal troubles are giving the San Diego State University alum a real shot at winning.
"After 40 years -- almost half a century -- of one family ruling this district, we're finally going to give the seat back to its rightful owners: not Hunter, not me, but the people of the 50th Congressional District," he said.

Until Duncan Hunter's indictment today, Ammar Campa had very little chance of winning.
CA's 50th District is an R+11 district.
The Hunter name was also strong because it was held by Hunter Senior for nearly 30 years.
However, forecasters are now moving CA 50 out of the "Solid Red" category into a more competitive category, so Ammar Campa now has a chance.

At this point, R112, we need numbers.
One lone Democratic freshman Congressman is not going to introduce legislation to repeal Roe v Wade, undo marriage equality, or invade Iran, so relax.
But one more Democrat is going to get us closer to a majority, which means NY congressman, Jerry Nadler, becomes chairman of the Judiciary Committee, which means hearings into the stupefying corruption of the Trump administration.
Ammar worked in the Obama White House so I think he's down with the gays

California has open primaries, so there's no requirement for any Republican to be represented. The people in the November election are the top two vote-getters from the primary, irrespective of party. So perhaps if Hunter withdrew, Ammar would be running against the third-place person?

He has plead not guilty and says the charges were set up by the Deep State and the Democrats for political reasons.
But he agreed with Paul Ryan's request to "temporarily" leave his Committee positions.

Ammar Campa's new campaign ad against Duncan Hunter.
Watch here:

Let's throw Ammar some money. Maybe his would-be constituency just needs to see ads like that for enough of them to see the light.

Running as a Democrat. Obviously he never heard what Eleanor Roosevelt said about Palestinians.

The latest polling out of California's 50th District shows that Duncan Hunter is still ahead in the polls, despite the indictment.
Things may change by November, but it does indicate how deeply-embedded voting preferences can be.
Even if a candidate may be a criminal, many voters will still support them if they are of their own political orientation.
For those DLers who are interested in politics, I recommend the book, "The Political Brain" by Professor Drew Westen. It explores some of the scientific research behind why people vote the way they do.

He may have less of a chance than a lot of Democrats running against Republican incumbents, even with Hunter's corruption, but it's still good to have an articulate, forthright person presenting a Democratic alternative in the district and getting the word out that there's a choice, especially a choice with dreamy eyes and a little scruff.
by Anonymous | reply 136 | September 5, 2018 2:40 AM |
I actually have to go to some political thing for him (even though we're not even from CA), because my cousin is friends with him and raising funds for him.
by Anonymous | reply 137 | September 5, 2018 2:42 AM |
[bold]He ties Hunter[/bold]!!!! Both are at 46%. People are underestimating the young Latino population that has come of age since 2016. Also remember that Latinos are the hardest to poll because they are the east likely to participate in surveys. This is why Beto O'Rourke is banking that the young Latino population will bring him home, and I believe it.
by Anonymous | reply 138 | September 5, 2018 3:15 AM |
Hunter's problem will be to excite enough people to vote for him. 46% may endorse him. But do they care enough to leave the house and vote for him? Is Duncan Hunter even campaigning right now? And who on earth is currently endorsing this man?

Unfortunately, I think R142 is right. Cons are douchebags who'd rather a white guy who literally rips them off, throws his wife under the bus (even though she's repulsive in her own right), says the Navy can go fuck itself for not allowing him to use them in his lies to get away with theft and is unashamed of doing so than vote for a brown guy who hasn't done anything to hurt them.
They're idiots. It's who they'll always be.

Thanks for posting the new poll, R138.
It's important to keep in mind that this new poll by Tulchin Research was commissioned by the Campa-Najjar campaign.
It will be criticized in some quarters for that, so we will need to see further polling from other pollsters before we can reach any conclusions.
But it's possible that Campa-Najjar is closing the gap as the news of Hunter's indictment continues to sink in across CA District 50.
And you're correct that the district is now almost one-third Latino.

He's very handsome and Christian apparently, despite the fact that his grandfather is labeled a Palestinian terrorist in Jerusalem. He says he never met his grandfather, according to a Jerusalem Post article. (feb 2018). He looks even better with a tan as in R103 's pic. Has anyone seen his brother? While making jokes regarding people should vote for him based on his beliefs, not his looks, he claims his brother is the REAL casanova in the family.

It might be because he was raised by his Mexican side of the family. I think his father and mother separated when he was young.

This district - San Diego's exurbs - is the most conservative in Southern California. In the whole state only the Bakersfield district is more right-wing.
by Anonymous | reply 149 | September 6, 2018 10:25 PM |
R148, I think the news about the extramarital affairs was only reported yesterday (link). The poll was from late August, after his misuse of campaign funds came out. I'm wondering if the cheating is likely to erode his support further.
by Anonymous | reply 150 | September 6, 2018 10:33 PM |
Yes, R150.
We will need further polling to determine whether the latest revelations erode Hunter's support.
Because it's been a solid Republican district since the 1980's and was held by Hunter's father, many forecasting sites such as Cook Political Report and Sabato's Crystal Ball, still give Hunter the edge.
Now we will see whether a trend away from Hunter can be detecting in the upcoming polling.

Despite the fact he's labeled? Are you some Zionist douchebag or just the usual brain-washed American moron who thinks being Palestinian is a crime because the one-sided US media taught you that over the years?
I'm an American of Palestinian descent and very proud of that fact. How stupid are you that first of all, you act as though he is supposed to be ashamed of his father's side being Palestinian and also, how stupid are you that you don't know there are Palestinian Muslims and Christians? And both of us are nationalistic when it comes to being Palestinian.
by Anonymous | reply 156 | September 6, 2018 10:48 PM |
I merely shared what I had read R156. I thought it could probably not go over well with the current political climate. It most definitely helps his chances that he never knew his grandfather. It probably helps that he talks about his "Christian faith" too. Why are you calling me stupid and suggesting I have no awareness of Christian Palestinians? I personally know several! I am not Nationalistic either, as I happen to be a Brit-expat living in the U.S. I think he's a fine candidate, and he seems very intelligent. I never said he ought to be ashamed of anything... though one cannot deny one's father being labeled a terrorist is not a plus for ANY political candidate here in The States. Peace brother.
by Anonymous | reply 157 | September 6, 2018 11:04 PM |
R156 In my defence, his, as well as his grandfather's, I specifically used the term 'labeled' because I don't know the grandfather's history... or enough for me to refer to him as such. I try to be very fair and deliberate with my speech, and in my writing to avoid misunderstandings regarding sensitive topics. If I had been anti, I would have simply referred to the grandfather as 'a terrorist'. If you google the topic, MUCH comes up about the grandfather. I hope it doesn't hurt his chances. I'm a fan of the journalist Ray Hanania, a prominent Chicagoan.
by Anonymous | reply 158 | September 6, 2018 11:12 PM |
R156 I also just noticed you have omitted the word terrorist from my post that you quoted. Those Palestinians labeled terrorists are usually Muslim BTW. I am unaware of ANY Palestinian Christian Terrorist Organisations. I hope that clarifies my original words in their ENTIRETY.

Israel launched a series of responses to the Munich attack, including a 1973 commando raid in Beirut, Lebanon, where Yusuf al-Najjar and his wife were both killed.
Yusuf al-Najjar's orphaned son, Yasser Najjar, moved to Egypt and later immigrated to eastern San Diego County where he met his wife, Abigail. The couple had Campa-Najjar in 1989, about 16 years after his biological grandfather was killed.
"As many know, I am of Mexican and Palestinian descent. And like many American families, my heritage bears a heartbreaking history. Palestinians and Israelis have lost too much over the years of bloodshed, that's why I am committed to helping broker a lasting peace in my lifetime," Najjar-Campa said in the statement.

I was going to say that it's great to see Palestinian Americans increase their participation in US politics, seeing as so much of American foreign policy is directed to the region of their ancestors but, contrary to the Jewish diaspora, we seldom here from the Palestinian diaspora on this or any other issue.
However, this guy seems to be trying VERY hard to downplay his Arabness. Apparently he's changed his name from Ammar Yasser Najjar. And he will only admit to have been raised by his "Christian mother".

by Anonymous | reply 170 | September 19, 2018 9:22 AM |
R170, the 50th District of CA still appears to be leaning Republican.
The last mainstream poll by Survey USA in late August showed Hunter ahead by 8 points.
There is apparently some internal polling which shows a closer race, but so far the indictment of Hunter by the FBI does not appear to have been fatal to his re-election chances.

Democrats are concerned by how tight some of the polls are for Shalala in FL 27.
This is a district that Clinton won by double digits, so Shalala should be performing better.

R181, California's 50th district is not San Diego in the sense you mention it. The city of San Diego has become quite progressive in recent years. San Diego county is mostly conservative but rather Mitt Romney conservative than Trump conservative. The 50th is the north of SD Cty and a large part Riverside Cty. And that county is Trump friendly with downright racist. I don't consider that district typical San Diego.
