Andy Gibb's hotness
I know he was incredibly fucked-up, but he was so hot at the peak of his fame. He had the best hair (I would have killed to have had that hair at the time), and his sexy furry chest was such a turn-on.
I never understood the reason for his demons--was it because he was so much in his brothers' shadows? (That didn't seem to hurt Marie Osmond.)

OP - I don't think it had anything to do with his brothers. It was too much fame too quickly. Most people aren't mentally able to handle that. So much to take in at one time and not enough hours in a day. Until they discover cocaine, (or something similar). That is what primarily led to his downfall.

I think addiction, plain and simple. His brothers by all accounts were extremely supportive and Andy had no small measure of his own fame. Loved him and still love his music.

R6 Actually, Victoria Principal left him because of his drug use. He publicly trashed her and blamed her for his troubles, but she never responded.
I saw an interview with her a few years ago where she discussed the relationship, and she said she would never speak ill of him publicly, because she knew he was deep in his addiction.
I give her credit for not responding and making it worse for him.

Andy Gibb was the Little Bee Gee. He was like a beautiful comet that exploded all at once and then quickly disappeared. Drugs and booze did him in. My understanding from what I've read is that Andy was a troubled youth and was using drugs even earlier than when his career took off. So while that success may have contributed, Andy had demons long before his career happened. Maybe the success of his brothers was a big weight on his shoulders to achieve himself. There is also a decent enough age gap between Andy and the Bee Gee boys. Enough for him to have been a spoiled recipient of their success.

Some people are more predisposed to addiction, be it drugs , alcohol or smoking, than others. I'm sure the pressures of stardom contributed to Andy's drug addiction. I knew too many around me who became abusers of drugs and alcohol so I never tried anything stronger than pot.

One of his demons was Victoria Principal. They had a hot affair; they even did a duet together (she could not sing at all). But the relationship was doomed; she supposedly told him "choose me or choose drugs." At any rate the relationship ended and he was said to be devastated by it. All that success and he blew it big time. At the time of his death he was broke. Another sad Hollywood story.

So much misinformation. Yes it was the John Davidson show that Andy met Victoria in person for the first time. There is a video of it floating around on YouTube. His childhood wasn't that troubled. His brothers hit it big in Australia by the time he was 5 or 6 so he grew up in luxury for the most part. He did get bullied because of who his brothers were and quit school at 13 and shortly thereafter his mother put his first band together. He worshiped Barry and they were the closest even though Barry is almost 12 years older than him. He always saw himself as inadequate and didn't think he deserved the success because he had and only got it because of his brothers. He couldn't handle the quick fame then decline like his brothers did. The Bee Gees and their older sister grew up in some pretty harsh conditions in England before leaving for Australia shortly after Andy was born. They had a tough skin because of that and because they had gone through a lot of rejection. They also knew how to handle being extremely famous then go into a decline as it had happened to them in the 60's.
Andy's mother was far from cold. If anything, she coddled/babied him too much. By all accounts he never grew up and froze in time maturity wise around 16-17. He got married at 18 against the advise of his and her family. Barry was ready to produce his debut album in Miami and Andy would have to move from Australia, so he thought if they got married they could stay together. Then then moved to LA so Andy could start promoting the album and near RSO. That's when his wife said he really went off the rails as far as cocaine use goes and she said he started getting paranoid. She left him and returned to Australia and found out she was pregnant. Andy filed for divorce after she left but said he would be there for the birth of their child. He wasn't and saw her only once when she was 2 but spoke to her frequently on the phone. Her name is common in Australia.
VP did do drugs, but not at the rate he did. She was able to do it recreationally and never got addicted. I think he was much more vested in the relationship then she was and when she broke up with him he was devastated and it took a while for him to recover. She didn't wait very long to start seeing Dr. Harry Glassman, who she would later marry. Andy actually took her to him when she got her eyes done. During that time he was fired from Solid Gold, blackballed from NBC for a time by Bob Hope after not showing up for a TV special taping and fired from Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat.
Out of the brothers though he did have the biggest hit in the 80's out of all of them with "Desire" which went top 5 in early 1980. It was initially a throwaway track from the Bee Gees Spirits Having Flown album. His final studio album was a disaster and Barry had to cover for him vocally quite a bit. He didn't show up to the studio for the duets with Olivia Newton-John and Barry had to record them and Andy added his vocal in later. The album was supposed to come out in the summer of 79 but was delayed until early 1980 because of Andy's erratic behavior.

I think a lot of people thought "Emotion" was a Bee Gees song. Samantha Sang was a friend and they wrote the song for her. It's too bad the song wasn't initially recorded by someone with a better voice (Yvonne elliman would've done great with the song). Sangs vocals are so weak that that the gibb brothers backing vocals and harmonies carried the song.
Destinys Child recorded "Emotion" in the early 2000s and when Kelly Rowland interviewed Beyoncé about songwriting bey talked about the creative process and inspiration for writing songs like emotion.
Barry gibb was very generous with splitting songwriting credits. When Andy was recording his first album, Barry would often come up with the title of a song first then write around it. When he was collaborating with Andy, he asked him to come up with some titles, Andy said "thicker than water" and Barry crafted "(love is) thicker than water for Andy" but gave him equal songwriting credit/points for the song. He also offered to give albhy gaulten half credit for grease but he declined. Both songs were massive hits.

This was Andy's last recording. It was part of a 4 track demo he did in 1987 which helped him get a record deal with Island. Andy, Barry and Maurice worked on the songs together in Miami after Andy finished another stint in rehab. The full song didn't get released until the Bee Gee's Anthology CD set was released in 2010, but parts of it were heard on the Behind the Music special on Andy in 1997. Had he lived, I don't know if it would've been a hit, but it's a nice 80's pop tune. I think Maurice is doing the majority of the backing vocals on this one, and there's not too much falsetto on the track.

He started well in Pirates, but started missing shows, though the producers did rehire him to do a short run of the show with Barry Bostwick in 1982 in Toronto. His reviews for Pirates and Joseph were solid. He was doing drugs before Victoria Principal, his ex wife said when they moved to LA, he became ensconced in the drug scene up there and would disappear for long periods of time. She started finding small buckets of bleach around their apartment in West Hollywood and didn't know why until she was told that it was to test the purity of cocaine. If it was pure, the cocaine would sink to the bottom, if it floated there was something added to it.

It's a shame so much of the Bee Gees first era of popularity is overshadowed by their success after "Jive Talkin'" . They had SO many hits in the 60s like "Gotta Get A Message To You", "I Started A Joke" , "Massachusetts" "Lonely Days", "Run To Me" (my favorite) and capping it off with their biggest hit "How Can You Mend A Broken Heart".
(Love Is) Thicker Than Water is without a doubt the stupidest title of any song I've ever heard, but the ending of the song is absolutely lovely.

And after that but before [italic]Fever[/italic], they had "Love, Be Tender With My Fanny."

I think Robin and Maurice are glad they died before they got to know that their brother Barry was a fan of Donald Trump.
Ugh, no wonder they all didn't get along.

R110, I wonder if there is a clinical term for someone who has to connect every topic under the sun to President Trump. Do you have any type of social life? Any friends at all?

There seems to be a lot of them here, r111. Probably suffering from Trumpitis.

Are you afraid of facts R111? I do think this is relevant to this thread.
Barry Gibb is a deplorable.

The topic is Andy Gibb's hotness and you connect it to your pathological hatred of Trump. You're sad and lonely.

Not much more sad and lonely than somebody salivating over a junkie who died almost 30 years ago.

Not as said as a tedious queen like r115. Change your shit rag. This is a gossip board cunt people talk about celebrity crushes past and present dead or alive all the time.

Does it mean the same as 'blood is thicker than water'?
