I'm of pure Iberian ancestry, and according to ancestry.com I have "low confidence" amounts of north african dna, and no middle eastern, but my ancestors were from galicia so I cant tell about people in the south of spain.

As a follow-up to r62, once an individual has a mixed the racial heritage (like, for example, most US "blacks" do), you can get all sorts of unexpected combinations, especially if both parents are mixed. One kid dark, the other light-skinned and fair-haired, etc. Boris Becker's kids with two different half-African women are an example of this.

Another of my favorite examples is a local media personality in Austria, where I'm living. She's the product of an African father and an Austrian mother, and her looks would put her squarely in the "black" category in America. She has two children with her white husband, and you'd never recognize them as being 1/4 African. The link shows her with her older child.

The lighter genes seem to be more recessive, so I guess it's more likely that baby will come out unexpectedly light-skinned than surprisingly dark (?)

In most countries, someone whose skin (hair, eye, whatever) color diverges from the typical would be considered exotic, and then their specific heritage (Eurasian? Afro-Latino?) might be discussed.

The US, being a melting pot (or a salad bowl, choose your metaphor), no longer has a single "typical" look, the way "nonspecific Northern European" used to be the default look until, say, the 1960s. But the binary race filter still corrupts American perception.

Based on the picture linked at r63, Pete Wentz's mother might be assumed to be of Southern European, North African, Arab, Pacific Islander or Eurasian descent. Or Euro-African descent. But outside the US, where the "one drop" rule still seems to apply, she would not automatically be considered "black".
