Stars That Are Miserable Assholes

Chelsea Handler...I just listened to a podcast where a female comedian talked about being routinely harassed and abused by Handler because Handler didn't like her being nice to the crew of a show they were on together.

Well, his father was a secret Nazi (obsessed with Nazi history and regalia) and used to dress up in a full Nazi uniform while at their home in the San Fernando Valley.
Nazi dad also used to verbally terrorize the entire family on a regular basis.
Herr Fowler (the Spacey father's real last name is Fowler) *also* consistently raped Kevin's brother throughout their entire childhood. He also violently beat him. Spacey's mom apparently knew about all and did nothing to protect her sons.
The brother has come out publicly with this a few years ago, and Spacey responsed to it, and *denied none of what his brother said*.
Kevin Spacey grew up in a house of horrors and I wouldn't be surprised if he's a miserable person today.

by Anonymous | reply 34 | March 28, 2017 2:42 PM |
Yes, [R32], I was pretty shocked as well.
Spacey really wants to avoid talking about his own childhood, so when this came out in the mid-2000s, Kevin's PR people were like, "The whole family cares deeply about Randall (Spacey's brother) and what he went through--even though Kevin himself wasn't a victim of abuse--he and his family just want to be there to support Randall because of what he's been through.....blah, blah, blah". It didn't refute anything in his brother's statements--just slipping in there that "Kevin wasn't abused".
I have a feeling though, that that last part was just so Spacey could control his own PR narrative and never be painted as an "abuse victim" and placed in that category by the media.
The brother says Kevin and his sister and their mom were beaten and verbally abused (and around the Nazi stuff) *all the time*.
Randall says he thinks he was the only one that was continually raped, but honestly, that household was so fucked up, I wouldn't be surprised if Kevin was raped by the dad too, and either wants privacy about it (understandable) or doesn't want that to be part of his official bio/Wikipedia entry--so to speak.
Anyway, here's a portion of a Page Six article from a few years ago that details what Randall (Spacey's brother) said happened in their childhood "house of horrors": *******************************************
"The Spacey family horrors: More tabloid torment for Kevin Spacey. Last week, we reported that he'd been mugged (or something) in a London park at 4:30 a.m.
Now his brother, Randall Fowler, is alleging that their late father, Geoff Fowler, was a sadistic, bisexual Nazi. In an astonishing echo of Spacey's "American Beauty," Fowler tells Britain's Mail on Sunday that their dad raped and whipped him for years and was a member of the American Nazi Party.
"I grew up in a living hell," Fowler, 47, a drummer, tells the Mail's Sharon Churcher.
"One day, when he was preparing to sodomize me, I took his old German Luger and loaded it and sat in the closet, pointing it at my mouth. Then I realized if I checked out there would be nothing to prevent [my father] from forcing my kid brother to take my place."

I bought the "Beyond The Sea" soundtrack from The Dollar Tree, several copies in fact and when I clean the house it makes me smile.
Now that whole deal is ruined and I will have to think about the Hell that Spacey/Fowler went through.
Still, his "Once Upon a Time" is a poem.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 28, 2017 2:50 PM |
Awww, still enjoy it, [R37]! That sounds like a fun soundtrack; I may buy it myself.
So many actors and entertainers have supremely fucked up lives--either as children growing up, or now as stars (or I guess possibly as both). It's sad really.
The only thing we can really do is to try to appreciate and enjoy the only good qualities they are able to offer the world--which is generally their gifts and talents.
If that soundtrack helps make *cleaning* fun for you, then I hope you keep it and continue to enjoy what you've always enjoyed about it for years to come!

Jerry Seinfeld.
All that money and fame and he still had to have someone else's wife to marry, and apparently he's notorious for putting down his fans and all "pedestrians"/regular people (and has done so for decades). He openly looks down on them all as "lesser than" himself.
That sounds pretty miserable to me

by Anonymous | reply 65 | March 28, 2017 6:58 PM |
Louie CK, although I don't know that I'd call him a star. Snappy with fans, and a stand-up, so a miserable asshole by default.
His career is going downward, so we won't be exposed to it. According to Maron, he managed to go bankrupt (if not technically, then at least lose a lot of money) again. He can't blame it on his wife anymore, like last time. His show on F/X pretty much collapsed, and his web series, which he tried to spin as a creative innovation, flopped.

Re Kim Catrall. I used to work at the Bluebird in Nashville, and, one day, we got a call from someone who said that someone very important was coming that evening, and we had to have everything ready. The table needed to be private. A security man even came to the club beforehand to figure out how to best get this person in and out of the club without being seen, which is pretty difficult considering how tiny a club it is. They would absolutely not tell us who was coming, and we all thought it might be Al Gore, who is a local. It was crazy what they put us through. When the time came, it was...Kim Catrall. When she walked into the club, she walked backwards, so no one in the club could see her coming in. It was just insane. We see famous people all the time in Nashville, and I can't imagine that anyone would have given two shits about her. That said, she was actually nice and even bought the cd from that night's performer, but that whole prearrangement thing was fucking weird. I can't imagine being so famous that I couldn't somewhere without advance work.

In the Joan Rivers documentary, Ben Stiller is one of the few comedians that speaks negatively of...
She's giving her spontaneous thoughts about other comedians and her remarks are all generally positive or specific to their type of comedy until they get to Ben Stiller, and Joan says something about him along the lines of "Lucky, so fucking Lucky!"
She also said once that Will Farrell behaved horrendously to her - he basically physically pushed her out of his way while he cursed at her.

Kim Cattrell was in one of those British Who Do You Think You Are episodes. It's on youtube. She was a total phony bitch to her father's second family who knew nothing about the connection. She didn't seem to have a sincere bone in her body. She was actually rsther cruel and haughty with these newly discovered distant relatives. I think she just went on the show to seek revenge against her father who seems to have abandoned her mother IIRC. But Kim learned that bitchiness from someone - maybe the dad fled in horror of his life.

You got that right. He's a real cunt when he gets going to his friends about how stupid people in general (and his fans in particular) are. I've heard it first hand. He also gets visibly irritated with people who ask for selfies with him (although I can't really blame him), and he mutters little insults under his breath while they're fumbling around with their phones. That said, he does pose with them, and to his credit he's very patient and friendly with little kids who come up to him.
He also loves to pull into a restaurant or hotel with some impossibly rare Porsche, insist that it be parked right in front, and then goes batshit crazy when anyone goes within 50 feet of the damn thing.

A couple of years ago, someone posted paragraph after paragraph about how awful Howard was on the "Iron Man" set, and why nobody wanted him back for the second film. If those posts represent Downey's feelings in any way, and I suspect they represent the feelings of everyone who's ever worked with that douche, then the bad feelings are mutual.

R112 That about Seinfeld just reminded me of something.
I'd just moved to Los Angeles and I was driving down Fountain. I noticed Seinfeld in a Porsche in the lane next to mine. I glanced over, and he saw me glance over. When we go to a light, he was still in the lane next to mine, but he stayed back. In other words, he declined to pull up next to me, for fear of being glanced at again!
To show you how long ago this was, I was exploring around West Hollywood, and I drove by the Viper Room and saw it from the outside for the first time. Later that night, River Phoenix would die right there.

by Anonymous | reply 127 | March 29, 2017 7:30 AM |
r125 Not that he's not a pig, but he hasn't been charged with anything yet. There was another woman there for a three-way, and she didn't file charges, and probably didn't corroborate the accuser's story or he would've (and should've) been charged. It's possible the other woman didn't witness it, but he allegedly assaulted her more than once.
On topic, I don't understand why Duff is so miserable when she probably has more than enough money for life, and can leave the business if she wants. She probably has enough name recognition to do more as well, if she wanted. I could see stars trapped in typecasting, or aging boybanders turning into cunts, but it's the power tripping bullshit that's ridiculous.
Carrie Underwood is another one with a bad reputation for being a demanding bitch behind the scenes, & she also has an NHL partner.

Interesting about Stiller. Stiller isn't a softie, but he isn't a straight up asshole either. He's actually pretty intelligent, and a great conversationalist. You're never bored if you meet up for dinner, or coffee. Gives pretty decent advice. Listens well. Has tons of stories about "old Hollywood", and he has no problem with talking to fans, or hanging out in places where he may be recognized.
Someone upthread wrote that he doesn't suffer fools. That assessment is quite succinct.

R119: Kitt's obituary: Kitt also supported President Ronald Reagan when it was unfashionable within the show business community. "I like him very much," she said. "I'm not kidding. ... Basically, his ideas are good. I do not believe in giveaway programs."
She was blacklisted for her playing South Africa and this was her reasoning: "I believe I'm doing something for the nonwhites by being here. Not coming would mean not knowing what it's like here, and not caring."
She also claimed she funded schools in SA by signing autographs at a department store for one weekend. She should have signed autographs for a year and she could have funded schools all throughout Africa.

Confirming that Alton Brown is (or has become) a miserable asshole. Arch conservative, super-religious, notorious (private) anti-Semite and possible homophobe. He was so much nicer back when he was fat, apparently. Huge closet case, according to some, which might explain the rest of him.
Susan Sarandon always took herself a bit too seriously, IMHO (for a cute gal who built her career on showing off her boobs), but she has devolved into a desperate, hot box of crazy, post-Tim.
Repeating multiple first-hand accounts, there is nothing miserable or assholic about Meryl (mentioned upthread) or Lily Tomlin, two ladies I admire. They are both troopers and appear happy in their maturity. But many of their more emo fans might be put off by how "grande-dame" they both frequently behave around the public. Don't expect group hugs, or even the time of day, for that matter. Not bitchiness. Just a chilly bit of hauteur, cause they got better stuff to do.

Kim Cattral being nice? I guess I can speak only from my own experiences, but I witnessed her having two meltdowns within weeks of each other: one at a private screening of a movie no one ever saw (Meet Monica Velour), and then shortly after at a lunch (at La Grenouille) for the same movie.
I guess it's possible that she was going through an unusually rough patch in her life and was not acting like herself, but...somehow I doubt it.
Plus I've heard and read other not so flattering Cattral stories over the years.

William Hurt came very close to getting run over by a train on the set of that Greg Allman movie -- which did run over a female crew member. Very little press about it outside of Georgia, it seems. They were shooting on a track without a permit and it turned out to be active, not retired. Whole crew including Hurt had 30 seconds to get off bridge before train came barrelling through.

Kate Hepburn knew how to craft a public image and work it. And she did it brilliantly. Like Greta Garbo, both earned and deserved their public reputations as Great Ladies of the Silver Screen.
Steep may be a nicer person in private, but she's bought into her public image hook line and sinker. Gone is the humbleness she had in her younger interviews that made her so appealing. I loved her Trump speech but the Lagerfeld comments (speaking of haughty) and the forced standing ovation at this years Oscars were ridiculous. Say what you want about Kate, but the public never got tired of her the way they have with Streep. And while I think Hepburn did care about the Oscars more than she let on, I also don't think she ever would have pulled a stunt like what Streep did to Emma Thompson.

My Dad got a check from Katherine Hepburn for some work he did on her house in Connecticut. Apparently, some of the the old time performers made a point of paying with personal checks, knowing that the creditor would not deposit the check, but would instead keep the check for the signature. My Dad photocopied the check using early 1970s technology, and framed the copy for the office. He cashed the check.

I met Ellen back in the days when her stand-up was big and she'd just been voted "Funniest Woman in America" or something. She wasn't exactly warm and effusive but she wasn't a bitch either. Just calm, maybe a little tense. But it was a pressure situation so why not?
Which leads me to my question, both in terms of celebrities and the general public: WHEN did Getting Angry become a sign of asshole behavior? I see this all the time and it annoys the fuck out of me. Anger is a primal emotion and, as long as one doesn't take it out on the wrong person, yell at the secretary when they are mad at the boss, why is it wrong to express it? I am not advocating screaming at every person who gets in the way -- but kicking a trash can over in frustration? That doesn't sound like grounds for even the word Asshole.
Or is a recoil from anger just one more step forward in Pussy Nation? I really do want to know.

From what posters are posting here it sounds like Ms. Ellen has become somebody whose anger issues are toxic and overshadow everything else in her life. With regards to the"wussification" of society, sounds like your own personal issue. We are a social species. Gay people are justified in being angry at our oppressors. At this point, any gay person who doesn't hate the enemies of gay people with a righteous rage big enough to spark revolutionary ultraviolence is a sellout.

I don't know why, but I feel like I need to defend Victoria Beckham. True, her husband seems a bit much -- but what hugely successful sports star isn't? -- but Victoria always seems amusing and self-aware in every interview I've seen of her. I don't know her personally, but she seems like a good person. Sure, she milks her celebrity for all it's worth. Wouldn't anyone? Her singing talents are marginal at best, but she was lucky and became successful. Is it her fault? I don't know how much of her clothing line she actually designs, but her clothes are beautiful and very well made. Yes, she is milking her celebrity to push her clothing line, but good for her for not just lunching and shopping all day. She's actually working. She might look sullen in photos, but that is just her pose. She seems to have a wicked sense of humor in interviews I've read. Just because you don't like someone or think they don't deserve their fame, that does not mean that they are "miserable assholes." Save that word for people who mistreat people and are generally rude and insensitive.
by Anonymous | reply 235 | April 2, 2017 5:21 PM |
R229, you sound like an asshole, and one who refuses to believe he's an asshole! Yes, anger is a normal emotion, but in a society where we're so much in close contact with other people we need to be careful about how it's expressed. Kicking over a trash can is fine if nobody else is around to wonder what you're going to kick next and if you pick up the trash yourself, but the fact is that most people who like to express anger use it to intimidate or dominate others - intentionally or unintentionally (usually intentionally). And just so you know, under most circumstances nobody likes angry people or enjoys being around them, nobody except politicians who like to manipulate and direct it towards their enemies.
Don't get me started on the political anger industry, R229, just learn to control yourself when you're around other people.

I have heard many times insults about Ellen, how she's angry, mean, horrible etc, and yet I have never read a single example. Ever. With the huge amount of people she has worked with since the early 90s you'd think one of them out there would have posted something by now. Nothing.

And yet nothing at your link gives any example or explanation as to why working for Ellen was bad. Or as he says : “It was so heinous. It was so toxic". We always get the adjectives but nothing concrete it is so annoying! How come we never get a simple quote or example of what Ellen does or says?
From the link : "eventually got himself fired from The Ellen Degeneres Show staff by ditching production meetings and openly insulting other staff members because he was so miserable." Well that's on him not Ellen.

I live in a town of less than 10,000 people. Tim Allen married a girl that was in my son's class all thru school. They would come here for Christmas and would go to midnight Mass at my church. They always left before mass was over so he wouldn't have to interact with anyone.
Sharon Stone's grandmother lived 35 miles north of me and she would fly into our local airport. I flew in and out of that airport plenty of times and never were there more than 10 people in that airport at any one time. It only flies small planes as the airport is small. There is never more than one small commercial plane at this airport at any time. Sharon would fly in but never enter the bldg. and would have a car pick her up on the tarmac.
These people always make me laugh because they make themselves so important.

Tina Fey has admitted that she can be a bitch. I think Fey is probably nicer and more stable than Ellen D. There are tons of stories of staff turnovers on Ellen's show and also stories of how she treats staff members. With Tina Fey, it's been known that she clashed with Colin Quinn and others during her SNL days. But, with 30 Rock writers and many crew members said they enjoyed working under Fey and many of them later returned to work with her for Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt.

by Anonymous | reply 257 | April 3, 2017 5:37 PM |
r257 I'd actually defend the 'don't look at me' in this case if the rumours of her being an unstable alcoholic are true. It's probably hard enough to eke out a facade in front of the cameras. Having to engage with the staff would be too much. With people that close to the edge, even a normal, professional greeting could send them into a meltdown. A lot of users become paranoid, and that's not what you want when trying to do a show. I'm not condoning the behaviour, and obviously she needs help, but I can see the other side of it.
As to the blanket policy, it's to not single out Ellen, and run counter to her image.

R214, Portia di Rossi (aka Mandy Peters, back in the day) also suffers from terminally low self-esteem. She has a history of depression and eating disorders (and according to some, an addiction to cosmetic surgery).
It's a shame, because she's always been pretty and had some solid comedic acting chops in ALLY MCBEAL, ARRESTED DEVELOPMENT (she was brilliant, they all were), and the underappreciated BETTER OFF TED. I don't hear bad stories about her from cast or crew.
At least Ellen's money allows Portia to her all her charity work. But we know who wears the pants in that marriage, literally and figuratively.

Then another interview a few years later when her kids were older, she said they always make her be goalie when they play soccer because "they know mum is crap."
She's great fun and doesn't take herself too seriously. Even with her poses, you can almost see the wink. She's very self aware and realises the luck she's had.

Yes and no. The movie was finished and released by that point, but its pre-production overlapped with the Manson trial. The day they convicted Manson, Angela was in Boston rehearsing [italic]Prettybelle[/italic], and she left for Ireland after it closed. It's hard to understand but it's baffling how much contempt stars have for the world after a certain point, maybe due to how bad they were treated initially, maybe just due to some human disease that doesn't respond well to always getting one's way. An actor friend let me use his beach place near Pacific Palisades, gorgeous L.A., right? Sounds perfect, a whole month of beach living with the rich and famous.
And it was miserable. Nobody would come out there unless it was a day trip -- too much traffic, too much hassle. And I'd never seen so much barely repressed anger. Even the Starbucks felt differently. Everyone just looked angry all the time. Angry because they didn't get what they'd hoped, angry because they got it and it wasn't what they thought it would be, who knows.
It's the kind of place where two actually (or maybe relatively) nice people like Ken Olin and Patricia Wettig can end up with a heroin addicted daughter somehow. It's all a lot more "Maps to the Stars" than anyone wants to admit. I'm still amazed at the level of anger, suspicion and guardedness from people who seem to have it all on the surface. As a porn star once said, "I thought I had boundary issues but these people built the fucking wall."

R289-- I have a classmate from Business School who ended up being the CEO of an extremely well known and successful company. They were bought out, and she walked away with millions and millions and millions. She is fairly well known in the business world, and people who follow her industry. We're still friends, and I'm occasionally copied on emails where people bend over backwards to be with her, invite her out for dinner, or to their house for the weekend. She is nice-enough but not exactly the kind of person you would be so aggressive about hanging with if she weren't well known and crazy rich. She remains close mostly to those of us who knew her before she got rich because, rightly, she mistrusts the motives of these new people. From the outside, it is pretty apparent to me why they are trying to befriend her. People know her name, but don't know what she looks like, so she can walk around with anonymity. Now imagine if you were a celebrity who everyone knew who were ? You would HAVE to have the biggest wall around you, just to protect you from people trying to get something from you. I don't begrudge the ill-tempered celebrity. Being on guard all the time, and not being able to trust anyone must be the worst type of prison.

I despise Tim Allen, but I can kinda see his point here. It's church, not a meet and greet, and how would it look if he's posing for selfies, signing autographs, and generally playing celebrity after church? If he doesn't do those things he's a dick. He's sort of damned if he does and damned if he doesn't in that situation.
I'm from a small town, and even though I'm not famous at all, I live in mortal fear of crowds when I go back, because without fail someone walks up to me and expects me to know them because we went to 4th grade together, or her father worked with my father back in 1973. I can only imagine how much worse those situations would be for someone famous.

I like and understand [R290]'s post but I also wonder just what it is they are so afraid of -- people hitting on them to help make them stars? As if they could do anything but intro them to their agents who would never bite (and I just can't see strangers on the street doing that anyway, not even wannabe actors). Writers pitching bad movie ideas? Can see it for Leo or someone like that and it really is a pain but not the average TV star. Stalkers? I guess,. Death threats? Sure, that changes everything but does that happen daily (in these times where it's easy to trace and arrest)?
I will say this: when I met them in a controlled environment, like an office or on a lot, there wasn't so much weirdness. Everyone relaxed for the most part and seemed decent. But in those westside villages (and these weren't all movie stars, of course),. everyone looked skittish as if praying not be spoken to, rushed, pissed in general. Personally, I always get the feeling that the successful ones are deathly afraid of losing it all which happens more often than not in that fickle business -- I knew a guy who knew Molly Cheek who bought Corbin Bernsen's house when he was no longer on "L.A. Law" and struggling and couldn't afford it anymore. She was on a series and could -- until that series ended and then SHE had to sell it. So I bet it all feels like quicksand even when you're doing well.

R301, it's probably some of everything you mentioned. It must be hell to have people pulling on you constantly. They have the paps screaming at them, and then everyone who gets close enough wants something from them, even if it's only some sort of recognition. It might not seem like a big deal until you go through it thousands of times. It must be draining, soul-sucking. And then there's the media and their inane questions you've answered so many times already.
I've read quite a few DL threads that put down actors who don't want people making eye contact or acknowledging them in some way. I can only imagine what it would be like at work to have people trying to get you to look at them because they want something you don't want to give them. It would be exhausting not to be able to do something routine without people invading your space constantly because they're starved for attention that only you can give them.
I'm sure I would figure, okay, I made some movies. Does that mean I owe people I've never seen before and will never see again?
I can see someone naively wanting to become famous and then discovering it's a pretty horrible existence. Some do well and manage to stay out of that kind of mess (I'm thinking Jeff Bridges and others like him), but it probably helps that he was raised around it. For someone who is newer to it, it probably takes a long time to find a balance.

R290 here. Someone upstream wondered how bad it would be if people were always after you for something. It gets bad. I am on occasional email chains about dinners or parties, etc, and people go on and on about how my rich/famous friend should come, how great she is, they need to spend more time together, etc. And I love my friend dearly -- I've known her since school -- but she is not the charmer that would warrant such attention. And she isn't even famous outside the business world, although everyone would know the company that she used to head. Now imagine that this happens every single day. People asking you for coffee. to a party. out for dinner. anything, just to spend time with you, and hope you can do something for them, even if it's just sharing a moment. It happens all the time, and it becomes a chore to say "no" all the time, and wonder if someone likes you because of who you are, or because of who they think you are. As much as some people fantasize about fame, I couldn't imagine a worse existence. It would be nice to have some more money than I have, but not so much that I have to question everyone's motives.

Continuing what R304 is saying: I was always amazed at how well, apparently, the "American Idol" kids adjusted -- the early winners especially and, even more so, Kelly Clarkson. Talk about instant fame and lots of it. From pure obscurity to major fame. And she seemed to handle it all like a pro, never seemed particularly unhappy (until later and that was more at the biz than fans, etc.) Maybe because she skipped years of abuse and rejection that probably contributes to the unhappiness once they get what they dreamed of and it isn't how they thought it would be.

Ok, without trying to reply to specific posters, I'm working class, and have saved and invested money while I've toiled away at jobs that paid an hourly wage. I still managed to accumulate a nest egg, and then, after losing my equally frugal parents, came into some money. Not a huge amount, by DL's standards. And I've certainly never told anyone how much. Amazing, though, how people you barely know come out of the woodwork suddenly asking for loans (that they'll never repay) for various reasons. I'm already out quite a bit of money (on "loan") before I learned my lesson. Multiply my shabby experience by 1000, and that's what a successful celebrity probably encounters.
Oh, and for those of you trashing Katherine Hepburn, read the attached story about her famous brownie recipe (really, the best one).

Let's compare Kelly Clarkson's attitude with that of that other America Idol winner, Carrie Underwood. Her bitchy cuntiness has been discussed before on DL.

Shirley Bassey is a notorious diva. ooops..... DAME Shirley Bassey. I once knew a journalist who interviewed her. This was a long time ago and I don't remember all of the horror stories surrounding the interview. But I do remember he said that he saw her in the lobby of the hotel where the interview was to take place later so he went over to introduce himself. He is Welsh and a native of the same town as Shirley. She ignored him when he introduced himself, and replied when he mentioned that he grew up in the same town she is from "Is that supposed to make me like you?"
Ben Kingsley is also said to be a difficult little diva. ooops.....SIR Ben Kingsley. He apparently insists on the constant use of his honorary title. Wasn't it Judy Dench, erm, DAME Judy Dench who said something like "Oh you mean King Bensley"? when another guest mentioned him?
Speaking of Bens. .... the production of Tropic Thunder has gone down in Hollywood lore as a production from hell, thanks to Ben Stiller's constant ranting, raving, and verbal abuse of his cast and crew. He is said to have been an abusive shit to just about everyone in sight. In the promo tours, the cast either refused to talk about him or they alluded to his behavior in ways such as "Ben has his own style" when asked about working with him. If I remember right, none of them appeared with him to promote the opening of the film.

I'm not really getting the hate for Tim Allen. I worked on "Home Improvement" and he was great to be around.
Patricia Richardson on the other hand wasn't much of a joy. Not a miserable bitch or anything but moody and clearly didn't like her job, or Tim. They were pretty much opposites and in this case opposites didn't attract. They had zero chemistry.

Yeah, WHY are these rich and famous people such miserable assholes? Here's my theory...
Once they achieve all the wealth, fame, adulation, universal ass-kissing, and the career they always dreamed of, they realize that no amount of wealth, fame or achievement will EVER make the gaping black hole of need and misery inside them go away. And now that they've achieved their dreams, they've lost hope that a "better life" will make them happy and make all the horrors go away.
And that's why a significant number of them turn to crackpot religion, it's their last hope.

OK, here's a small story.
Many, many years ago, I was shopping at Chicago's Marshall Field's (not that crappy Macy's) store in Michigan Avenue's Water Tower Place. (For those who do not know Chicago, this was not the big State Street Marshall Field's.) I was just browsing and walking around looking at the clothes on the racks and suddenly, across the room there was ... EVE ARDEN. I recognized her right away, partly from her old TV show "Our Miss Brooks", but also from many movies. Even then, I loved old movies and always enjoyed her appearances. A movie was always better for her participation.
She was quite tall and accompanied by a tall man I took to be her husband. She was looking through a rack of white blouses.
It was very strange, really, seeing someone I clearly recognized but who was in a place that was completely unexpected. I don't know why she was in town - probably for some play or other.
I was across the room, maybe 20 - 30 feet away (I'm no good at judging distances) when I noticed her and I just stopped. It never occurred to me to approach her and speak to her. It was just one of those times you see someone that you "know" in the manner that all of us "know" actors and actresses from film or TV. So, I just stood there, at a distance and watched her for no more than a minute, like any other shopper, searching through the rack of blouses.
Suddenly, she looked up from the blouses, right across at me and in some faint way, acknowledged me. I can't really explain or describe what she did, but it was just a flash, perhaps just eye contact, perhaps a slight nod, I'm really not sure.
I went on my way and she went back to the blouses.
Reading this thread has reminded me of that incident. Thinking back, I don't know what I wanted from her, if anything. I had no expectations. I would never have spoken to her or interrupted her or called attention to her when she was clearly just doing normal stuff. It was a nice moment for me. She didn't have to look at me, could have ignored me, I didn't expect it, but when it happened, so quick, it was nice.
I supposed performers today get so much attention from so many untrustworthy, not to mention truly dangerous people, they probably find it safer to just put on blinders.

What do people expect from those who are successful in this fabricated 'star system 'Hollywood and celebrity have created! Our empty /shallow values and heroes and heroines are only reacting to what is a total fabrication. I remember when living in SF, Jackie O made a not so publicized trip to the city. The toilet seat in the hotel room where she stayed was stolen after she left. This is ridiculous as is following someone in the public's eye to see what they put on their cheeseburger.
Has anyone else noticed the heightened level of elation when hosts of talk shows come on stage? I know it's all prompted by stage managers, but it is too odd. Years ago on Oprah the audience was so thrilled with Oprah's entrance, that one woman burst into tears. Oprah commented and looked baffled. Joan Rivers screeched that Hollywood stars are America's royalty...I don't know how that can be when some of these microwave stars were working as cashiers in supermarkets just before they were supposedly lifted to this level of fame.
Everyday Europeans did not have the constant false sense of intimacy or friendship fans have with today's celebrities. They were purposefully anti-social and distant...this has changed and now their lives are featured on Entertainment Shows. This sort of false fame is hard to live with and is often not survivable. The viewing audiences of America need to wake up focus on things and that really impact their lives.
by Anonymous | reply 326 | April 9, 2017 7:09 AM |
yes, i never thought to approach celebs whenever I walk past them, I lived in the village for many years and have seen countless celebs on the streets and some are even neighbors, living just 1 block away. most times, I just smile and nod or I will just walk on without letting on that I know who they are.
damn, once i walked by a resto and i saw keith richards sitting inside by himself, being a huge stones fan, he was the one I was excited about and would have loved to have said hi to him but I was in a rush to go somewhere and didn't.
sadly the village has been ruined by nyu and the college kids so I moved.

I ran the catering facility at a large not for profit in Manhattan, and the day of the annual lunch of the Board Members was upon us. I remember there were 10 board members, and perhaps 30 company officers attending. Months before hand, the board members would receive a form asking for food preferences etc; once returned, the menu could be ordered. Teresa Heinz, wife of John Kerry was on the board. As an ex-pat I was aware that she too was not American by birth, and that she had been raised in Mozambique, and that she was like me, at heart, an immigrant. The serving got under way, and was flowing smoothly until one of the waitstaff came in quite flustered. A problem with Ms Heinz's meal. I went out, asked what the problem was, and she told me that she was allergic to whatever had been served to her. I apologized and explained that her PA ought to have received a menu request form, and that we would have aced upon it accordingly. She looked at me and said "I can't eat that". I reverted immediately to my nice Irish accent, looking her straight in the eye saying" we're in the middle of a routine, but if you can bear with me for a couple of minutes, I will get you another platter. However, if you can't wait, may I suggest you take the elevator 30 floors down, hang a left and a left, and there's a deli on the corner of Madison which does a wonderful pastrami sandwich." We locked eyes-and as I looked at her I had visions of a young Teresa running about the grasslands with elephants and giraffes and hyenas-then she relaxed, grinned and said " That's fine,I'll wait for you". A few minutes later she was chowing down on something to her liking. Mrs Heinz was an absolute lady, but I was aware from experience that with someone else the situation could have gone any way. My key to dealing with her was getting her to recognise a similar past. The best way of dealing with obnoxiousness or cuntish behaviour is to make that eye contact, and in no uncertain terms let the aggressor know that they have met someone ready to play them at their game. As the poem goes "the glories of our blood and state are shadows, not substantial things..."

Remember how Jodie Foster said that no way would she be able to handle the celebrity thing today, that she would've quit as a young actor (yeah, yeah, they all say that but Jodie has major reason, of course). I think there is a lot to that. Not long ago, if you lived in L.A., you'd pass someone like Marcia Wallace as she shopped and smile and say "I like your work" or whatever and she'd smile back and say "Thank you" and both of you would move on. These days everyone with their phone cameras and social media pages and then, if you're at all hot, TMZ and the other paps and so many magazines wanting and needing pictures and freelance photogs doing all they can to get them and fast. It must be exhausting.
I wrote elsewhere once about seeing Springsteen eating in some middle table of a Chinese restaurant on Santa Monica Blvd. with his redhead wife, surrounded by people on other tables. Everyone left him alone and he didn't pull any private room stuff, to his major credit. Wonder if he could do that now? There would be flashbulbs going off every two seconds, video dinging, and a call to TMZ in seconds.
But we may be reading too much into it too. Stars have their own places to go and aren't afraid to leave the house. I always tell folks if they want to see a celebrity, just go to the Ralphs (( think?) on Pacific Coast Highway any time of the day and your odds are good. Had two friends in from out of town, we went to the beach and then stopped by there. Walked in and there was Kate Hudson, back in her "Almost Famous" peak, in Daisy Dukes smiling away as she ordered from the deli. (And, yes, we completely left her alone. And it was just pre-cell phone cameras so, again, who knows if she could do that now?)

R334 that's a good point .Things weren't nearly as intrusive in the days before cell phone cameras, social media, and 1000 websites and magazines that needed content.

r337 I agree with you. That's also a factor why Pine has a serious drinking problem. He's visibly intoxicated in so many party pictures you can find online.

I think a lot of celebs have so many people financially dependent on them they cant stop working, and they resent that. When we think of wealth, we think in terms of our own lifestyle, since no one knows your true net worth except you or your partner, but celebs paydays are often published in trade rags. We know how much someone got for their latest blockbuster or TV show. That results in almost anyone who lays eyes on you to know how much they could possibly get out of you. Add to that the fact that most stars dont have very good boundaries, given the nature of their careers, and you've got one miserable asshole supporting an entire village, because they cant say no.

by Anonymous | reply 341 | April 9, 2017 6:39 PM |
r339 that's very true with stars, and it's been going on forever. Many of them have relatives they have to support financially, sometimes for their entire lives. That must be a tremendous burden. And if you're worth millions, I'm sure renting your relative a studio apartment and buying them a used car isn't going to cut it. Oh no, they want a nice house, a luxury car and a generous allowance etc. The list must go on and on, I can only imagine how exhausting and frustrating it must be. This is a BIG reason why many celebs have financial difficulties, in spite of making big money.

(R325) I had something similar happen. I was at a book party in NY at a gorgeous apartment building off Central Park. After the party I was in the lobby waiting for my friends and Alec Baldwin walked in. He obviously lived I the building. He caught my eye and I smiled and he smiled back and headed for his elevator , stopping to ask the doorman how his night was. I know he has an asshole reputation but he seemed pretty normal to me. I think the smile was just because he could tell I wasn't going to bug him in his own building.
by Anonymous | reply 343 | April 11, 2017 3:52 AM |
r343 That's because he had an audience. The doorman probably had a WTF? moment when Baldwin acknowledged him. I'm sure he hid it well, especially if he'd been working there for any length of time.

Ben Affleck is actually very nice. I work in retail and he came into my store a few months ago. He bought a shirt and when I was ringing him up, he chatted about the weather, and asked if I had plans for the weekend (not picking me up). Even AFTER I rung him up, he chatted a bit more, told me nice chatting with you..have a great day- smiled and left. VERY VERY VERY NICE.

I've met a lot of famous people briefly because my brother is s network exec. Most are kind of like that one clique in high school that all the teachers loved but you weren't s part of. Like they'll pass you in the hall and when your eyes meet they just half smile but only speak to their own kind. I can't say I blame them. There are a few exceptions. James Taylor was as nice and genuine as they come. He's just who you think he'd be. Bono and the other members of U2 are also really normal guys. People I would put into the 'say hello but nothing more' category were sting, Dave Matthews, Bonnie Rait. Bruce Springsteen doesn't say much unless you want to talk music but his wife Patti is just the sweetest person.

Chelsea Handler AFTER Trump was elected went absolutely batshit, psycho, nut job crazy. I could totally see why Rosie fell into a deep depression and even Kathy Griffin later on after she almost got kicked out of the country. Chelsea reminds me of Mrs. Stotch in that episode of South Park when she finds out her husband is sleeping around with other men and taking it up the ass at the bath house (see articles on the autopsy for LA anchor Chis Burrous. It’s sort of related just downright disturbing). So Mrs. Stotch goes completely daffy and tries to kill Butters and than after she thinks she kills him her hair gets all stringy and her appearance just dramatically changes throughout the episode. Every time I see Chelsea losing it on Twitter I think of Mrs Stotch. And she’s made enemies with EVEYONE including the gays. It’s like she went from being.....meh, somewhat amusing if that’s your thing to a total mental case. Even her muse Amy Schumer will go there and speaks her mind and sometimes she offends a lot of people but she manages to keep a good sense of humor about it and doesn’t take herself THAT seriously. Chelsea looks like she’s just out for blood and doesn’t care who she steps on to get her point across. Even Michael Richards thinks she needs to chill out.

I’ve written this on other threads but I believe Charlie Sheen wished something terrible happen to poor Selma Blair when she had the “nerve” to stand up to him after her stint on his other awful show. Of course Hollywood stood by him and he will continue to get away with just about EVERYTHING scot free. Now she has MS Sheen is continuing being his awful self. Giving him a slap on the wrist would be the very worst he’d get away with but that’s never happened and it never will. He runs the show or at least liberal activist daddy does so maybe that’s why they’ll never touch him....figuratively obviously. He’s #METOO proof. He’ll never suffer any consequences for all his heinous actions. He’ll just say something witty as usual and Hollywood will be all “that’s our Charlie for you! Haha! Haha!” Or they’ll blame the victim. “It’s Charlie Sheen, what did you expect?”
