I disagree, OP. Dick van Dyke was handsome when he was younger. Seeing him in Mary Poppins when I was a wee lad stirred my loins, and I am still attracted to guys who look like that: clean cut, dark hair, blue eyes.

I was about to say, you can't possibly tell me Depp wasn't looking good in Donnie Brasco, which came out in 97. I think R23 hit it, he started falling off around 2010 with The Tourist. That's 26 years as one of the hottest men in Hollywood. How the fuck does one get "3 minutes" from that?

WTF?! Who in their right mind would ever consider John Mellencamp "handsome?" Or Dwight Yoakam? Or Tom Petty? Or the repugnant Billy Bob Thornton? Some people consider Javier Bardem attractive, but he's certainly not conventionally handsome. Lyle Lovett is the same way; not conventionally handsome but women find him very attractive. But Mellencamp, Yoakam, Petty and Thornton are all just ugly, not "ugly handsome."

I think OP means people who are pushed to the masses as the hilt of beauty, but in fact are plain to fuggo. Paltrow is a perfect example: she's white and skinny with processed blond hair, but she is aggressively plain looking to me. Yet any woman who is tall, thin, white and blonde is called a goddess. Look at Taylor Swift: another pinch-faced fug who is on the cover of all the magazines. Even J-Law, before all her surgeries was another plain Jane. For males, I'll agree about Gosling. He looks like a thumb whose surface is slowly melting off.

People like Clinton and Cumberbatch have intelligence, charm, talent, and are well-spoken/highly-educated. For men, this makes up for a lack of looks. I'd add Tom Hiddleston to the list. He resembles a terrified drowning rodent, but he is charming in interviews and is pedigreed.

In looking through the posts, I'm reminded that beautiful is not synonymous with sexy or magnetic. For me, beauty is best for gazing, but not much more.

I think Fred Ward at r81 is the hottest man on this thread, but I don't think he has ever been heart throb or hyper-handsome material.
