A Little Romance (1979) starring Diane Lane
What a sweet little movie. I hate both romance films and kiddie movies, but this one was surprisingly enjoyable, in all its naivety.
Lane was such a beauty even as a kid. And Georges Delerue's Vivaldi-inspired score won him an Oscar. Only Olivier was his usually hammy-self.

Holy shit I watched this yesterday. My dad taped this off of The Movie Channel when we were kids. Bought the DVD a few years ago. Beautiful story. The boy never did another movie after that, no? Sally Kelllerman is fab.

Diane Lane never got her due. She's been good in so many movies but she doesn't seem to get much acclaim. She's very compelling and the camera loves her.

The boy did just one other movie and then left the movie industry to become a dentist. He looked a lot like Shia LaBeouf in this one.

R2 Totally agree with you. Apparently Olivier proclaimed her "the next Grace Kelly" when they were making this.

I was trying to figure out the voluminous off the shoulder floral frocks Sally K and a few others were wearing at the WRAP PARTY! Ugh! Wouldn't that have been an LBD affair, even in the 70s????

Saw it as a teen on cable. Diane Lane was luminous. But the Frenchy-ness of the movie bored me to tears. Zzzz.

Diane Lane is a terrific actress. Like many actresses her age, she struggles to get good parts. But she's had a long career, has been in some great films including some cult faves like Ladies and Gentlemen, the Fabulous Stains and Streets of Fire, And her Oscar-nominated performance in Unfaithful was excellent, and would have been a deserving winner.

I saw this movie when it first came out, and there is one scene that has stayed with me forever. When Lane's character asks her new friend what his father does for a living, he says, somewhat sheepishly, that he drives a cab. Lane, sensing he was uncomfortable, says that it is an honest living, to which he replies "not the way my father does it."
I don't know why, but I think of that exchange pretty much once a week, for these past 40 years.

It's on TMC right now.
Such a charming film. Lane is so charismatic in this film. George Delerue's score is beautiful.
Sally Kellerman plays a great bitch in this.

They really don't make movies like this anymore.
