John Kerr is gorgeous in this. And Deborah Kerr is magnificent. Love John Alton's warm photography, too. The most extraordinary thing about it though is how utterly devoid of any reference to (or even inference of) same sex attraction. Surprisingly, given it was directed by Vincente Minnelli.

Gorgeous? If you like zombies, maybe. Kerr could make a twig look manic.

John Kerr was a pretty boring actor, which might be whty he became a lawyer.
He is in one of the best known episodes of the Alfred Hitchcock Hour called An Unlocked Window. Aka "the nurse killer" episode.

I never found John Kerr attractive. His role should have been played by Anthony Perkins, who took over from him on Broadway (with Joan Fontaine as Kerr's replacement) - Perkins was both hotter and a far better actor. And didn't young Dean Jones have a small part in this?

Would you say that Laura Reynolds prostituted herself?

OP: How did you see it? I've always wanted to. But it's not on Netflix, Filmstruck or iTunes. And I don't want to pay $17.99 for the DVD.

Or R6 you can watch it for here for Free, however the picture is distorted to get around YouTube copyright policy

I'm so glad I don't live in the US. I don't know what I'd do without torrent sites.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 20, 2017 7:22 PM |
R11 the links at R7 and R8 are YouTube links which is available worldwide
by Anonymous | reply 12 | March 20, 2017 7:23 PM |
R12 The image quality in R8's link is too horrible too watch. And R7's link says that the video content can be played in US only. Like I said, I can't imagine my life without the torrents. I watch mostly obscure European movies, which can't be found anywhere other than on some torrent sites.

1956. A time was homophobia ruled supreme. Movies simply couldn't handle gay themes - not even with Vincent Minnelli direction.
Tennessee Williams was the only gay person to be able to somehow inject a gay subplot into some of his movies.

Which were still edited to remove it.

R16 But still came through fairly clearly in Suddenly Last Summer with cousin Sebastian being a homosexual, and Night Of The Iguana with Grayson Hall playing the Oscar nominated role of Miss Fellows, the repressed lesbian. And certainly a few tidbits scattered throughout A Streetcar Named Desire.

Am I right in thinking that the original play was more open about Tom's homosexuality? It says on wikipedia that the other boys began to target him after he was caught sunbathing with a male professor. In the film, they target him after finding him sewing a shirt for one of the ladies on the beach.

R13 Which torrent sites are safe? I've wanted to use them but everybody warns of malware and viruses.

The design of the film is so beautifully done and the restrained tone is so compelling that it would have been so amazing if Minnelli put some real guts into the picture by having a scene of hot passion between Tom and his male roommate. Alas, t'was not to be.

I only remember John Kerr from the screen version of South Pacific; he was good looking and bland. Never saw him in anything else.

R23, did you miss John Kerr's stellar performance in The Pit and the Pendulum? At least, he was a handsome man.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 20, 2017 11:40 PM |
I forgot that John Kerr was in THE PIT AND THE PENDULUM. I wonder if Vincent Price tried to woo him.

Can someone send a link to the aforementioned torrent? I have no way of watching Tea and Sympathy (1956) because I am not in America and none of the local streaming sites offer it.

R31, you’re right. As a kid I only saw him in Mahogany in which he was off putting & weird. Each time I see him now I rediscover how beautiful and appealing he once was.
