He was hot throughout his lifetime, but a true dreamboat in his youth.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | March 13, 2017 1:28 AM |
He looks like Caleb from Big Brother and Survivor.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | March 13, 2017 1:41 AM |
I heard he dabbled.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | March 13, 2017 1:44 AM |
Jack was the original good time had by all.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | March 13, 2017 1:52 AM |
He was bi, no?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | March 13, 2017 1:59 AM |
He was a drunk and died of alcohol related diseases at 47
by Anonymous | reply 7 | March 13, 2017 2:00 AM |
Yes, he was bisexual to some extent. I think mainly straight but would let guys play with him. Very hot man. He would be 95 today if he had lived. But alcoholism did him in. "On the Road" is a great book, as is "The Dharma Bums."
Incidentally, Judy Garland also lived from 1922-1969.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | March 13, 2017 2:05 AM |
Was he big?
by Anonymous | reply 9 | March 13, 2017 2:05 AM |
In what sense?
by Anonymous | reply 10 | March 13, 2017 2:07 AM |
Who?
by Anonymous | reply 11 | March 13, 2017 2:07 AM |
There is no indication, whatsoever, that he was bisexual. In fact, he declared repeatedly that he was a Catholic bound the laws of God. He did have bisexual friends, of course. He was once arrested in the disposing of the body of a homosexual into the Hudson River who was murdered by his best friend, also a staunch heterosexual.

Kerouac reading his short story "October in the Railroad Earth"
by Anonymous | reply 15 | March 13, 2017 2:25 AM |
Does anyone recall the film bout five years ago with Gareth Heguland? that kid who plated Brad Pitts "cousin" Patroclus in Troy as Neil Cassidy. Thought he did a decent job it actually dealt with Kerouac's bi sexuality. The kids career tanked.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | March 13, 2017 2:38 AM |
Was it ever made clear if the guy who was murdered, David Kammerer, was a true stalker of Lucien Carr?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | March 13, 2017 2:54 AM |
So hot.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 13, 2017 2:56 AM |
Oh yes, R18. Kammerer moved all around the country to follow Lucien Carr during his youth and young manhood.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 13, 2017 2:57 AM |
I thought I read in one of the books that Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac had an affair. Or at least that Ginsberg had a crush on him and Kerouac allowed some intimacy.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | March 13, 2017 2:58 AM |
R21, you've seen photos of Allen Ginsberg. Do still believe that stupid rumour now?
by Anonymous | reply 22 | March 13, 2017 3:00 AM |
lol, it's Garrett Hedlund, R17, who starred in On the Road. I liked it a lot. It had a pretty good cast including such DL faves as Viggo Mortensen, Steve Buscemi, Amy Adams, and the inimitable Kristen Stewart.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | March 13, 2017 3:02 AM |
R22 - I saw Allen Ginsberg in person about 20 years ago. Attended a reading he gave at San Diego State University. He autographed my copy of "Howl" afterwards. So yes, I know full well what he looked like.
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 13, 2017 3:12 AM |
Then you have answered your own question.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 13, 2017 3:49 AM |
[quote]He was hot throughout his lifetime,
Not really. He became a bloated, alcoholic mess towards the end of his life; but, yes, he was quite the looker in young adulthood.

R28, you need a new gimmick.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | March 13, 2017 4:20 AM |
R26, I never asked a question.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | March 13, 2017 5:41 AM |
Don';t forget! Gore Vidal fucked him, and bragged about it for decades.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | March 13, 2017 6:03 AM |
I'm sure there were many old, ugly queens like Vidal with his drinking problem who said such things. No one believed them.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | March 13, 2017 6:11 AM |
" Gore Vidal fucked him, and bragged about it for decades."
Can you blame her?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | March 13, 2017 6:14 AM |

I had such a crush on him in college, and read all his books.
Then I grew up.

by Anonymous | reply 37 | March 13, 2017 6:28 AM |
He work was very overrated in retrospect. It go so much attention at the time because it was part of the first breaking away from the suffocating American society of the 1950s.
But now? It's really indulgent baloney.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | March 13, 2017 6:32 AM |
His first novel, 'The City and the Pillar' was a standard novel of the '50s.
Then, bumming around, taking drugs, and an unrequited love for Neal Cassady and (as the DLers love to mistype) Wa-La! A speed freak's epic was born!
by Anonymous | reply 39 | March 13, 2017 6:52 AM |
it's properly written:
and walla, all of a sudden,
by Anonymous | reply 40 | March 13, 2017 7:15 AM |
R39, the City and the Pillar is a Gore Vidal novel, not a Kerouac work.
by Anonymous | reply 41 | March 13, 2017 7:17 AM |
Apparently he was raised by Quebecois and grew up speaking french. What a weirdo.

So, he was ungrammatical as well as pretentious?
by Anonymous | reply 44 | March 13, 2017 7:28 AM |
"Blowjobs, yes. Assholes, no."
by Anonymous | reply 45 | March 13, 2017 11:44 AM |
I knew the Kerouac bashers wouldn't take long to arrive here. Do you realize how pretentious and insecure you make yourselves look?
by Anonymous | reply 46 | March 13, 2017 3:53 PM |
"The Town and the City" was Kerouac's first published novel.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | March 13, 2017 3:55 PM |
R46, do you realize you do not understand the definition of "pretentious" and "insecure"?
by Anonymous | reply 48 | March 13, 2017 4:40 PM |
I absolutely do and you exemplify them.

^^^ Another lost "New School" graduate.
by Anonymous | reply 50 | March 13, 2017 5:11 PM |
I saw the movie KILL YOUR DARLINGS last year. They all came across as self indulgent assholes. Who got away with murder. Most of Ben Foster's scenes as William S. Burroughs seemed to have been cut.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | March 13, 2017 5:50 PM |
His best book was Big Sur, which is basically stream of consciousness delirium tremens.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | March 13, 2017 6:23 PM |

Me neither. Damn.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | March 13, 2017 6:35 PM |
In high school, I discovered 10,000 Maniacs and thought Natalie Merchant was IT, so I learned more about JK after hearing their song, "Hey Jack Kerouac." I was really into him for a few years.
Now I kind of find my interest in them (and in Natalie Merchant, if I'm being honest) to be kind of embarrassing.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | March 13, 2017 6:50 PM |
Is KILL YOUR DARLINGS any good?
Years ago I saw Beat with Country Love and Norman Reedus, but I don't remember much about it.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | March 13, 2017 6:53 PM |
who in the fuck is that?!
by Anonymous | reply 56 | March 13, 2017 6:54 PM |
Damn you r54. I was going to post that song. Whenever I see his name, I think
Hey Jack Ker O Ack
Why embased tho?
by Anonymous | reply 57 | March 13, 2017 7:08 PM |
Nobody should be embarrassd to like Kerouac or any of the Beats. There is some vivid poetry to be found in their work. "Ring of Bone" is a great poem. And the Beats were influential on artists, writers and musicians that came after them.
by Anonymous | reply 58 | March 14, 2017 12:19 AM |
R58, you really aren't stupid enough to believe that Jack Kerouac coined the phrase, " After me, the deluge", do you?
DO YOU???
by Anonymous | reply 59 | March 14, 2017 1:05 AM |
Here is R59. Someone please bring her a cup of tea; she's having a spell.

by Anonymous | reply 62 | March 14, 2017 2:28 AM |
My husband's high school English teacher in Denver (from a wealthy family) used to to drive Cassady and Kerouac around and "help them out." So, I suspect they were at least gay for pay.
by Anonymous | reply 63 | March 14, 2017 2:41 AM |
I wouldn't put it past Cassidy to do "gay for pay" if he needed the money. He was a horndog and didn't give a damn. Kerouac had too many hangups and probably wouldn't.
by Anonymous | reply 64 | March 15, 2017 2:58 AM |
Neil Cassidy was best played by Thomas Jane. Gorgeous guy. Adrian Brody played Ginsberg.
by Anonymous | reply 65 | February 20, 2018 3:32 AM |
R42, let me educate you.
French Canadians left the barren farms of Quebec Province starting in the 1870s to work in the New England textile mills and other factories. They were close enough to their families in Quebec to move back and forth frequently. They clung to their language and customs as long as they could.
My FC family also lived in Lowell, Mass., and my parents were born the year after Kerouac. They heard French spoken at home, too. It was still heard when I was a kid. It was that way all over New England and the Upper Great Lakes.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | February 20, 2018 3:48 AM |
I had forgotten that he spoke French...although I remembered something about his Mom's attachment to Canada.
by Anonymous | reply 67 | February 20, 2018 3:55 AM |
I am surprised to learn, from the piece linked above) that he was politically conservative. I wonder if he voted for Nixon?
by Anonymous | reply 68 | February 20, 2018 3:57 AM |
French Canadians traditionally had big families to work the “ribbon farms” - narrow with river frontage - along the St. Lawrence. So when families moved to the U.S, some members stayed behind. Lots of moving back and forth and visiting.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | February 20, 2018 3:59 AM |
And, oddly, R68, they were often Republicans.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | February 20, 2018 4:01 AM |
He lived the last years of his life with his mother in St. Petersburg, Fla.
I can't imagine.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | February 20, 2018 4:05 AM |
He was hot, but I always get the impression he was riddled with STDs.
by Anonymous | reply 72 | February 20, 2018 4:23 AM |
He always told me his greatest fear was to have his picture posted on a gay website.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | February 20, 2018 5:46 AM |
R43, thanks for posting one of my favorite Kerouac lines.
Anyone who doesn't care for him is of course entitled to their opinion. Yet, some comments above read as if they were posted by someone who watched 'Sean Hannity Exp;ains The Beats."
by Anonymous | reply 74 | February 20, 2018 10:16 AM |
LOL r31 link
[quote](Gore Vidal, bottom, and Jack Kerouac, top, though Vidal claims it was the other way around )

R4 dabbled? For the 1940s and 1950s Kerouac and Neal Cassidy were basically out as bisexual, and it was very well known.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | November 13, 2018 1:47 AM |
R72 he had genital warts according to a biography I read, but Ginsberg who was a pedo had more.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | November 13, 2018 1:48 AM |
R63, so he dealt them drugs or helped them find drug dealers? Remember this was when smoking pot and taking benzedrine or speed, and other drugs were basically unknown to most people.
by Anonymous | reply 79 | November 13, 2018 1:51 AM |
R45 Kerouac was top for anal sex.
