It's a bad reputation to shake off. Not just Auschwitz, but Chelmno, Sobibor, Treblinka, Majdanek, among others. These weren't labor camps, they were strictly industrial killing centers. Horrific. As much as I'd love to see some of Poland's royal history and palaces, the more recent events of last century overshadow it. Even the air that one breathes in Poland has the atoms of millions of dead Jews floating in it.
by Anonymous | reply 1 | February 13, 2017 5:04 PM |
A) Poland did not exterminate its Jewish population; Germany exterminated Poland's Jewish population.
B) Poland, with is borders constantly in flux between its mammoth neighbors Germany and Russia, never developed a cultural identity of international significance.
C) The cinema of Poland and the Lodz film school provided some of the most significant postwar European cinema of the 20th century.

There was so many concentration camps located in Poland because the Germans knew the local population wouldn't care. In fact, were delighted to have the Jews removed.
Antisemitism was rabid in Poland to prior to WW 2. In fact, there were pogroms in Poland as late as 1946.
Think of the beginning of Schindler's List -GOODBYE JEWS or the little girl watching the trains full of Jews go by and making a slitting neck gesture, to imagine what Polish people really thought of Jews.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | February 13, 2017 5:25 PM |
It's true. Some prisoners survived Auschwitz and wound up getting killed in pogroms. The smart ones left Eastern Europe completely. There was no future for them there. I can't imagine they really needed more signs to tell them to get out.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | February 13, 2017 5:36 PM |
OP, The very 1st thing the Nazis did when they conquered Poland is to round up and execute all of the authority figures, intellectuals, teachers, newspaper writers, societal leaders who might possibly have a differing opinion or level of influence.
Then they placed ads all over offering high paying jobs to young women. Their mothers were hysterical when they found out their Catholic daughters would be forced to service high quantities of Nazi soldiers. Those who got VD doing "the job" were shot. Whomever refused "the job" were sent to prison where TB was rampant. Their mothers were subject to arrest as well for their daughters disobedience to the Nazi regime. Many tried to leave the country and were caught. Only those young women who were already pregnant were allowed to go home safely.
Very few Polish survived from that generation once the Allies invaded. Then the Soviets took over.

R9, Those who didn't help Germany did not survive. Then again only the sheep were left after those with any real brains or power were immediately shot. All the men were drafted. All the young women were forced into slavery as whores and then shot when they inevitably got VD.
The older women were starving and sick trying to care for their young children and elderly relatives. There was no school. So perhaps the sheep were too traumatized to resist and stopped thinking on their own.

The Germans considered the entire Polish population inferior, not just the Jews. They systematically set about destroying all Polish culture and history.
Not sure what ethnicities were left after the war but they harbored anti-semitism and surviving Jews trying to return to Poland were in real danger of being killed.

I've visited Poland a couple of times and I really like the place and the people. I found them friendly, honest and willing to make visitors feel welcome- which is more than I can say for the inhabitants of Prague! Whilst it's true Polish cities were badly damaged in the war, from what I've seen so far they've been restored to their former glory. I'm looking forward to going back. The tragic history with the Jews isn't hidden either; far from it, the current generation seem to be very keen to ensure that the past isn't forgotten.

[quote] wasn't most, if not all, of Poland's heritage destroyed in WWII?
Of course not. Krakow has one of the largest preserved "old towns" in the world. Even its large Jewish district with its cemeteries and countless synagogues somehow managed to survive WWII. Warsaw, on the other hand, was completely razed during the war but the town centre was rebuilt after the war and you'd never guess everything is a replica nowadays.
My favorite Polish town is Zamosc with its magnificent town square. There are plenty of other cute towns, but unfortunately Polish people are very unfriendly and the weather mostly sucks. And don't even get me started on their awful cuisine.

Poland is an amazing country. The only reason there were so many Jews in Poland in the first place is because, in the Middle Ages and for centuries, the Polish kingdoms were tolerant and open to their presence when everyone else - except the Popes in Avignon - were expelling them. But for sure, the relationship with the Jews is ambiguous at best: some Poles died saving Jews, many others betrayed them. Like the French. Unlike the Danes. But after the Handicapped, and the Jews, the Nazis were coming for the üntermensch slavs. We forget 1.5 million of them died at the Germans' hands also. And Krakow is a beautiful city. And Chopin was Polish. And they saved Europe's ass God knows how many times - including the code breakers of WW2 and the Battle of Britain pilots of WW2 and the effective Resistance to the Communists from 1978-1989 - led by this man. We've a lot to thank the Poles for.

Not really R24. They kept getting kicked out of areas further west, and moving east to lands decimated by plague and invasion, but somewhere, probably in Silesia was a catastrophe that caused a bottleneck in the Jewish population that they are still recovering from today.

by Anonymous | reply 28 | February 13, 2017 10:50 PM |
R26 He should have done more, for sure. Especially since 90% of the pedophile scandals were gay priests going after pubescent adolescents. The Catholic Church needs to get rid of its gay clergy. But what he really should have done is deposed the Bishops who moved the offenders around. But, as we're seeing in the UK: The BBC, the CofE, the Football Association, and local authorities ALL did the same blind-eye turning protect the institution response in the 1970s, 80s and even early 90s.

R30 Actually the Church claims to teach the truth about morality and is fully conscious that many members - in the past and in the present - have failed to live up to that standard. So I'm not surprised that the best and the worst of humanity are found in the Catholic Church.

The Germans reserved their greatest cruelty for Poland. They kicked the Polish Christians who then kicked the only people below them, the Polish Jews.
Helping Jews was punishable by death. There was no trial. You just got shot on the spot. But there are more Poles in the Righteous Gentiles section of Yad Vashem (the Israeli Shoah memorial) than any other nation.
Much of the Shoah was carried out in Poland because the Germans had occupied it since 1939 and because the Jews were already there. That's why more Polish Jews died--there were more of them and they had more time to kill them. A frequently willing local population helped too.
Prewar Poland was about 1/3 Jewish. That's roughly analogous to the Catholic population in the U.S. So imagine a war that wiped out all the Irish, Italians, French, Polish, Hungarians, Puerto Ricans, Cubans and Mexicans in America. That's what Poland lost. Many cities lost half their population.
Europe after WW 2 was a lawless place with millions of people trying to get home, find home, find their families. Many Jews returned to the places in Poland they came from in an attempt to find any family members who had survived.
There was an infamous pogrom in Kielce in 1946 where Poles killed 42 Jewish Shoah survivors (see link)
Britain did not want to let the Shoah survivors into Palestine and so they eventually made their way to Germany where they were held in DP (displaced person) camps from the middle/end of 1945 to 1948 or 49 when they immigrated to Israel or to the US, Canada, Argentina and Australia. (The movie "Exodus" is about trying to smuggle survivors into Palestine in 1947.)

Prussia was an ancient German homeland but when the maps were redrawn after WWII, it was far inside Poland. Germans there mostly left or were killed.
Gdansk in Poland was once named Danzig. Prior to WWII, it was a free city (not in Poland or Germany), though it was mostly populated by Germans. Hitler wanted a land corridor from Germany to Danzig, and didn't get it. It was one of the excuses for WWII.
by Anonymous | reply 35 | February 14, 2017 12:30 AM |
Correct R35. After WW2, the Allies basically picked Poland up and moved it to the west. So the area that was eastern Poland became part of the Soviet Union and in return, the Poles got a big chunk of eastern Prussia (aka Silesia)
The population transfer necessary to make that happen was massive--millions of people, and happened at around the same time a few hundred thousand Palestinians were booted out of Israel.

As others have already pointed out, Poland had a good/bad relationship with its Jews, as most countries did especially immediately before and during the Nazi Occupation. Also mentioned a couple of times was the Polish underground who not only smuggled Jews out of the country but also hid and cared for them when the smuggling became impossible. There is also the Polish armed forces, many of whom managed to flee and fought along side the Allies. I forget which Allied commander it was, but one of them praised the Underground, members of the Army and Navy, calling them some of the toughest fighters he had ever seen.

Poland had a strong cultural identity. It was a superpower for hundreds of years. Its nobility created a myth that they were descended from the Iranian Sarmatian peoples. It had the first written constitution in Europe. The Kingdom of Poland and Grand Duchy of Lithuania had 11 million people and it was the Poles under King John III Sobieski whose winged hussars broke the Turkish cavalry at Vienna in 1683 saving the Habsburg's asses.

Everyone knows that the Ashkenazi Jews have numerous diseases of inbreeding suggesting there was a "population bottleneck" where they were isolated from other communities somewhere 600-1,000 years ago. Nobody knows where exactly this isolation took place, it isn't mentioned in the historical record, but Poland is one possibility. And why isn't it mentioned, since it was historical time and records were kept everywhere they could have been.
