What's your favorite gay themed movie?

For me, #1 is Brokeback Mountain. Beautiful cinematography with a very deep and well thought out exploration of the life of two closeted men in the 1960's. Probably the best gay-themed movie ever made.

#2 would be the Wedding Banquet. Another movie directed by Ang Lee that was very well done. A bit more sugary than BBM, but it was decent.

#3 for me would be Broken Hearts Club. I know that it was a silly little movie, but it felt like it had a lot of heart. I really liked the portrayal of some gay outsiders living life in a gay community. It was kind of a "feel good" movie for me.

Maurice gorgeous and wonderful

Beautiful Thing

by Anonymousreply 1February 11, 2017 2:31 PM

Maurice was too depressing.

I didn't get the Hugh Grant character at all. Do people really go through life like that, in such denial? That's so sad.

Exactly, R20.

There were two very different gay stories being told in Maurice.

Some just assume that the only gay person in that movie was Maurice.

Priscilla. Or, rather, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert. It was the first gay-orientated film I was allowed to watch (it's one of my mother's favourites, if only for the copious use of sarcasm and vicious, vicious putdowns), but it was one of *those* films, you know, the ones that demand a wide-screen and high definition for the sheer beauty of the Outback. Think "Mad Max" with a tranny, two drag queens and a dodgy old bus. Oh, and *this*.

"Big Eden." A lovely, sweet, affirming, non-tragic ending, I-wanna'-live-there film.

by Anonymousreply 58February 11, 2017 10:49 PM

[quote] are people so clueless about history that they don't understand things weren't all that hot for gay people around the 1910s?

People have some of the same pressures placed upon them today, that they did back then.

Sure, things are easier for gay people in 2017, socially. But the pressure is still the same if you come from a very conservative family, or if you come from one where you have an image to "protect."

For me, regardless of whether it was 1910 or 2017, INTERNALLY, I couldn't do it. Fine, if you don't want to be out and proud and holding hands in public, and engaging in a gay relationship, that's one thing.

But WHY MARRY A WOMAN? Why pretend that you're straight? Why go through the motions of being a straight person, when on the inside you know - to your core - that you're gay????

That's the part that bugs me.

I could never be untrue to myself. If I need to hide my sexuality, or if I need to keep it a secret, then that's one thing.

But putting on the FACADE of being straight, and marrying a woman, and having kids with that woman, and pretending that you are a heterosexual male - when you know full well that you are gay - that's an entirely different thing.

You're lying to yourself, you're lying to your partner, you're lying to your kids, and you're lying to everyone. Your entire life is a SHAM. That's the difference. That's why I don't like the Hugh Grant character in Maurice.

by Anonymousreply 59February 11, 2017 10:55 PM

Oh, let's just admit it: Muriel's Wedding is a gay classic. What's not to love? ABBA! Muriel/Mariel! Tim Sims! You're terrible, Muriel! And, by god, one of the funniest vengeance scenes on film!

Offsite Link
by Anonymousreply 60February 11, 2017 10:59 PM

There was nothing gay about Muriel's Wedding, aside from the music. And even that part is not necessarily gay. It's Australian.

Muriel's Wedding was a straight chick flick.

by Anonymousreply 61February 11, 2017 11:03 PM

Actually I think as someone has already mentioned Mountains of the Moon. A very underrated movie.about the explorer Richard Burton in the 19rh century trying to find the source of the Nile, in the meantime you see his ambivalent sexuality. The other explorer he is with and his repressed homosexuality and the tribes they meet along the way which some of them have gay sex in them. Patrick Bergman is Burton.

Get Real is a lovely English film of coming of age that was in the 90s at the same time Beautiful Thing was about .

One that brings back fond memories is 'Urbania'. Mostly because I think that Dan Futterman is adorable.

I also loved 'Parting Glances'. I'm not sure if it really counts as 'gay-themed' but I did adore "Liquid Sky", too.

John Water's seems to be ignored a bit on this thread. His best is, of course, "Female Trouble".

I like that one. It was so true to life.

by Anonymousreply 68February 11, 2017 11:17 PM

I should apologize. I shouldn't have said that John Waters was 'ignored a bit'. What I should have said was that he was COMPLETELY IGNORED. For shame! Sure I realize he didn't make A-list movies. But how many on here are? And how can you list over 100 movies, R45, and not give ONE shout out to John Waters. That's just wrong.

[quote]Another Gay Movie - if you like crying and tragic melodrama, this isn't the movie for you

You forgot: "And have the IQ of a dead flashlight battery."

by Anonymousreply 99April 10, 2017 5:53 AM

No, my IQ isn't deficient. It's probably higher than yours R99.

My subjective opinion prefers light, romantic comedies over tedious melodramas. A product of my times and era I suppose. I grew up in the 70's and the movies and times seemed to reflect an anti-hero, anti-establishment theme. I found it as depressing as the actual times themselves.

If I prefer laughing over angst and tears, that's MY choice. BITB was overly dramatic and sad. Making Love was a bit better (the actors were actually fuckable and hot) but again, unrealistic to a closeted teen like me at that time, struggling to come to terms with my own sexuality. These were the Reagan 80's, and AIDS was devastating the gay community to it's core. I'm all cried out 3 decades later.

I loved East Side Story - Steve Callahan was sooo hot. It was a light, refreshing comedy that helped me to escape from the reality of W. Bush in the White House, and 2 wars raging.

R59, you're looking at 1910 from your 2017 self.

If you did not marry a woman, you were likely rejected from society. It was difficult finding other gays and no one thought you could have a long term gay partner.

r110, it depended both on what strata of society you belonged to and how willing you were to "play the game." Some men found escape and cover by going into the British military and/or going off to build the empire: Lord Kitchener, Cecil Rhodes, Roger Casement, etc., etc. Some men were even courageous enough to acknowledge it all: Edward Carpenter.

Back in the time where Maurice takes place people were way more obsessed with keeping up their public appearance and holding on to their social status. Clive (Hugh Grant) was upper crust with obligations not only to his family but also as landlord having to be a well respected leader of his local community. Maurice's family was just middle class with him stepping into his father's footsteps as investment banker. Clive was so traumatized by how his friend was treated for being caught redhanded with another man that it made him not only physically sick but he distanced himself from Maurice (but later on it's clear that he doesn't want to let go of Maurice as a friend ... and potentially coming to a discreet arrangement? Which was foiled by Scudder?). In those times not just Clive, but his entire family would have been socially (and potentially financially) ruined by society and the common folk turning their backs on them if he had decided to come out as, what it was known back then, sodomite and live a life with Maurice as his boyfriend. One of the later editions of the book, the movie is based on, has an epiloge of Maurice and Scudder being lumberjacks away from people and cities.

Regarding r46's Killer Condom movie. The movie is based on a classic Ralf König comic book (yes, back then they still were called comic books, not graphic novels). Killer Condoms was about Ralf's loathing for condoms ruining the pleasurable sensation of getting fucked or fucking.

Before Killer Condom he agreed to let another comic book be adapted for filming, but that was turned into a silly rom-com starring Till Schweiger Katja Rieman (though the movie did kickstart German cinema in a big way in Germany). However König hated Der Bewegte Mann so much that he produced Killer Condom on his own.

The fun always ends whenever resident know-it-all Zelig (R45) shows up to dominate a thread. Why can't he follow the OP's guidelines and simply list a few favorites instead of pasting a Google search result? The lectures (and fabrications) are becoming tedious.

Sheesh!
