The best obscure Disco songs
Obscure is a relative term, I know. This is not the thread for mega disco hits that everyone knows -- no Last Dance, I Will Survive, Stayin' Alive, Le Freak etc. Instead, post somewhat lesser known disco gems that don't get played at every wedding or disco FM station.
I just discovered this gorgeous song in the first episode of the Netflix British drama 'River'. It's use so effectively in this show that it's hard for me to separate it from the emotional weight of that episode, but, it's still wonderful. What a great voice. I'd never even heard of Tina Charles until now.

Heyyyy! This is what's up. Until trolls descend.
Do the songs have to be specifically from the disco era per se? Sorry I still don't know how to provide a link yet. But I'm opinionated, does this count? :-)

R3 - well, preferably, yes, from the 70s or early 80s, but if you have something else that's very "disco" from another period, post it.

According to my mom this was the greatest hit of the summer of '86 in Yugoslav discotheques, though I doubt it was ever popular in the US (I believe real disco was long dead by then, but Italo disco kept on going well into the 90's).

you want obscure, check this out: from Wikipedia:
Madleen Kane (born 4 March 1958 in Malmö, Sweden), is a Swedish model and singer. A former Elite fashion model (height 180 cm / 5'11" - weight 47 kg / 103 lbs), she worked since age 17 for the German fashion magazine Burda Moden. Despite her slenderness, she was published semi-naked in two issues of Playboy magazine (in April 1978 for French edition and in April 1979 for Spanish edition). In addition, she had five Top 10 hits on the US Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart in the late 1970s and early 1980s.

Obscure??? so at reply 94 and this one has not come up yet? although obscure outside of gay clubs, I recently read a book on the history of disco and it is considered one the best disco tunes of all time, Cherchez La Femme, by Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band. I have to agree when it played way back in the 1970's WeHo it got all the gays were on the dance floor. I still love it!

Karen Young - Hot Shot.
This video is hysterical. Karen Young looks completely out of place, like a suburban mom who shops at Sears, took a wrong turn, and ended up at a disco. She looks terrified throughout most of this clip.
Then the queen in the white shirt who they probably recruited from the Arthur Murray Dance Studio next door and who tries to steal the spotlight at 1:19.

OMG, R202...Voulez-Vous was such a kick-ass fucking album. When I was a little boy I carried it around from room to room like a blankey. Until Xanadu came out and took its place. (Surprise! I turned out to be gay.)
So many good songs on that album: If It Wasn't For The Nights, Angel Eyes, Chiquitita, Does Your Mother Know, Gimmie! Gimmie! Gimmie! (A Man After Midnight)...the best ABBA album.
But one of my all-time faves from them that was never a single was "Kisses of Fire." Such amazing cheesy gay disco pop.

In my opinion, 1978 & 1979 were the absolute best years for disco. I'm less enamored with the early '80s Hi-NRG stuff (with a few exceptions, of course).

Do you guys realize that most disco occurred in the 1970s?
Half of these suggestions are from the '80s.
Disco may have carried on through the early '80s in Italy. But in America, there was a backlash and disco was out-of-fashion.

Camp aficionados will never forget 1980's THE APPLE, a science fiction musical about a "futuristic" show business dystopia where one, evil corporation controls all art in 1994.
It contains a very raunchy disco tune by Grace Kennedy that DOES NOT DO SUBTLETY. You won't believe the words you're hearing.
It rips off Donna Summer's "Wasted" and masters the art of the single entendre.

r290 is Hi-NRG, synth pop or New Wave.
Not disco.
Disco music means the R&B genre from the 1970s.
Not just dance music, or anything that ever played in a discotheque.
English speakers don't even call dance clubs "discos" anymore, because of the association with the 70s music and culture.

Disco was never well suited to such narrow definitions, r291 and r300. It gots its start in the early 70s as a very broad church of any music that would keep people dancing. Hence, soul, jazz-funk, African, Latin, funk, dub, and funky rock music all got played at the early discos. The mainstream came to understand disco as the formulaic genre that dominated the late 1970s, but anyone who actually spent time in clubs knows disco was a broad, diverse and ever-evolving style of music. After the disco demolition night at Comiskey Park, the major labels dropped disco and it went back underground into the clubs, evolving into boogie, hi-nrg, and then house music in the 1980s. This one's from 1982 and it sure sounds like disco to me...

r318 Italo is a particular strain of disco, 80s boogie is a particular strain of disco, early disco-rap is a particular strain of disco, noughties Norwegian space-disco is a particular strain of disco. My point was that disco is not suited to a narrow, specific genre definition - it's far more than just the classic vocal disco-soul of the mid-to-late 1970s. Walter Gibbons' playlists at Galaxy were much more wide-ranging than Saturday Night Fever and The BeeGees. I should confess, though, that my understanding of disco is informed by a long-time obsessive interest in all its forms.

"You Sexy Thing" and "Every1's a Winner" are songs you probably know from British R&B group Hot Chocolate (R.I.P., Errol Brown).
But their albums are always good from start to finish. If you get the chance, just play their entire discography -- there's never a bad song. And they do it all — funk, blues, jazz, soul and disco — competently!
Here's "You Could Have Been A Lady," originally a funk song that Hot Chocolate disco-fied in 1976:

I can't believe nobody has mentioned Teri Desario. This is the song I play most often on the way to work and gets me all happy. Produced by the Barry Gibb who also does back-up vocals.
Teri Desario - Ain't Nothin' Gonna Keep Me From You (1978). The single peaked at #43 on the Billboard Hot 100, so it didn't even hit Top 40.

And my second favourite Teri Desario song. Such a good song!!!!! I don't know why this wasn't a big hit.

I’m not sure if this one is obscure, but I do think it was one of the first dico songs, since it’s from 1973.

La Bamba by Antonia Rodriguez, 1978
I guess this came after the Richie Valens but before the Lou Diamond Phillips one from the movie

Back in 1979, Iris Chacón appropriated Antonia Rodriguez’s versión of La Bamba, and it was in her act for over a decade.

Not super obscure, but Barbara Mandrell's "Fooled By a Feeling" should be considered a disco song instead of Country.

How could anyone list Ring My Bell? That was one of the biggest hits of that late 70s/early 80s next to Take Your Time (Do It Right). It was so big, it even made it into Just Dance.

For some reason, this thread dropped off of my 'watched' list and I completely forgot that I'd started it until it happened to be near the top of the general feed this evening. MAN, you guys did not disappoint. I'm only up to R95 and I've already heard about a dozen fascinating osbscure disco-era gems.
The most interesting -- to me -- thus far have been Chilly's 'For Your Love' and Dr. Buzzard's Original Savannah Band's 'Cherchez la Femme / Se Si Bon' . That last one is really lovely. Who knew I needed some big band and swing-influenced disco in my life??
I'm going to be lost in this thread for days! Thanks, everyone!
