Ricky Nelson was so purty

I can't stand his music, but he was just so goddamn cute. I've always loved his rather peculiar lips. It's too bad he was a druggie.

Ricky Nelson wasn't a druggie. You would have seen it in his looks and his career, and both help up beautifully until his early death in an airplane crash. He was gorgeous with a decent voice.

by Anonymousreply 6February 4, 2017 4:33 AM

When growing up, my family lived across the street from him during the last five years of his life. We'd see him come and go in his red Pantera or driving along Mulholland while we were out walking-jogging. (He'd purchased the old Errol Flynn "farm.") He was quite stunning.

by Anonymousreply 7February 4, 2017 4:41 AM

I read a fascinating book by a female groupie who knew a lot of rock stars, and Ricky was in her book. Despite his squeaky clean image he was a very sexual person and into sexual experimenting. One of his favorite things to do was mutual masturbation with another person, including males. He loved to masturbate one on one and then both of them have simultaneous orgasms, which is much easier to do with another male. He sounds like my kind of guy!

The dreary Ozzie and Harriet Show was running out of steam by the end of the 1950s (was it ever really funny?) when suddenly Ricky emerged from puberty as the hottest teen idol imaginable and gave the series a totally unexpected shot in the arm sending it to the top of the ratings. Every episode found an excuse for Rick (no longer Ricky) to strum his guitar and sing a song, many of which went to the Top Ten on the record charts. The show still stank but at least there was something to look at.

If only Desi and Lucy could have held on 10 years longer, who knows what little Richard Keith might have done for I Love Lucy?

by Anonymousreply 23February 4, 2017 12:32 PM

He was one of my mom's teen idols when she was growing up in the 50s. I still remember hearing about the plane crash that killed him when I was home during Xmas break on New Years Eve 1985. There were rumors in the media at the time that the fire that caused the crash was due to free-basing coke onboard but that was later dismissed although coke was found in his system.

They have a family tree chock full of A-list/B-list/C-list celebrities.

Ricky married Kristen Harmon, sister of Mark Harmon (NCIS, St. Elsewhere) and sister-in-law to Pam Dawber (Mork and Mindy, My Sister Sam). Plenty of bad blood there. After Ricky's death, Kristen married Mark Tinker, son of producer Grant Tinker, who was married to Mary Tyler Moore (needs no credits). Ricky and Kristen's daughter Tracy (Square Pegs, Father Dowling Mysteries) married William R. Moses (Falcon Crest), who is brothers with Rick Moses (General Hospital). Ricky and Kristen's sons Gunnar and Matthew formed the group Nelson, who had several hit records in the 90s. Ricky's brother Dave had a daughter Teri, who married Chuck Woolery (Love Connection, Wheel of Fortune), who was also married at one time to Jo Ann Pflug (M*A*S*H).

by Anonymousreply 28February 4, 2017 2:47 PM

To add to R26, Ricky's wife Kristen also had a sister Kelly, who was a marginally successful actress (Bay City Blues, and several guest appearances on CHiPs, Barnaby Jones, Battlestar Gallactica, etc.) Kelly was married to John DeLorean, who started the DeLorean Motor company, best known for the model of car used in Back to the Future. John's ex-wife was Christina Ferrare who until last year hosted Home and Family on the Hallmark channel. Prior to that, Christina hosted a morning show with... Chuck Woolery.

by Anonymousreply 30February 4, 2017 3:02 PM

His brother was a much better singer and actor but Ricky was better looking and not fat. The producers said, "We can't make a star out of his tubby lard ass." And David said "Ricky was always flaunting his good looks at me and calling me fat."

by Anonymousreply 31February 4, 2017 3:04 PM

[quote] He, like Justin Timberlake has a good and bad side.

R28 It's funny you mention Justin Timberlake, because he currently lives on the property where Ricky Nelson lived when he died. The old Errol Flynn (Mulholland Farm) house that Ricky occupied was eventually knocked down a few years after Ricky died, with the acreage subdivided. The house that Timberlake owns was built by Helen Hunt (who never occupied it), but it basically sits where Flynn's house was with the same street and private driveway access.

Ricky was always kind to people who stuck around to meet him as he was coming out backstage after a show. And yes, he was beautiful. Shy in person.

Interesting story.

Ricky Nelson married his wife when she was already pregnant with their first child, daughter Tracy. She was born approx 6 months after they married.

According to Tracy, the Nelsons had the doctor falsify her birth certificate and write her birth weight as much less than what it was; so they could publicly claim Tracy was a premature birth.....and Rick and his wife were not have premarital sex

by Anonymousreply 38February 4, 2017 8:55 PM

He had a kind of Chet Baker languidity about him...

by Anonymousreply 40February 4, 2017 9:00 PM

Rick was living in Mulholland Farms, the old Errol Flynn mansion and everyone who lived there said it was haunted. Tracey and the twins all said there was a ghost. Nelson would shut himself off in his bedroom upstairs with his girlfriend doing coke. He was drop dead gorgeous till the day he dropped dead.

More about Mulholland Farms:

When singer-song writer Ricky Nelson, who was a big fan of Flynn, bought the farm in 1980 the activity became even more pronounced. Nelson’s daughter Tracy experienced several unexplained events.

"Tracy often felt a presence in the house. One night when she arrived home late from work she spotted a male figure standing in the dining room. She thought it was her father until she realized that his car was not in the driveway. Another time she thought buglars had broken into the house. She heard people throwing things at the walls and breaking chairs and glass as she hid in her bedroom.

Surprised the next morning she found everything untouched except for one room which had been locked from the inside. When she spoke to her father about what she felt and heard he replied, “Oh, that’s only Errol.” Tracy moved out of the house after this."

Creepy Fact: Ricky and his band were on the last tour when one of their amplifiers blew up. Turned out a pet python had crawled into the amp at the house, was loaded onto the doomed plane, froze to death in the cargo hold, and was discovered when they took the amp apart.

by Anonymousreply 51February 4, 2017 10:24 PM

Travelin' Man was the first conceptual rock video (produced by Ozzie). As Seinfeld readily admits, The Adventures of Ozzie & Harriett was the original show about nothing, which was probably more novel than recycling vaudeville gags and radio scripts as many other early tv shows did.

The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriett never topped the ratings and Ozzie had one of those 15 year contracts that were given to successful radio stars by the tv networks. ABC was at a disadvantage relative to the other networks and so Ozzie did not have to produce the kind of ratings Jack Benny or the others did in order to stay on the air.

Rick Nelson was gorgeous.

Kristen, "Kris" on the show was exceptionally vapid in many eps. I wonder if it was her real personality? The episode about Ricky's painting he did of a former girlfriend comes to mind. David's wife was a Playboy playmate. The episodes would be a nightmare to syndicate. Music rights, royalties, sometimes great stretches of the show was plugging sponsors, Kodak, natural gas, milk....

by Anonymousreply 60February 5, 2017 1:15 AM

I saw him at a state fair when I was 16, about five years before his plane crash. It was up close when he was singing his old hits and some newer stuff. The bulge was hard to miss, and he was either sweating a lot from coke or the heat or both. I stared at him but he barely glanced in my direction. He was one of my first crushes along with Richard Chamberlain and Jan-Michael Vincent. Chamberlain at a political event that same year at least gave me a look back and a smile.

It also had a few out buildings like the one in the forefront of this photo, which was closest too Mulholland Drive. (The main house where Ricky lived is at the top of the photo.) After he died it remained vacant for awhile. We kids would sometimes sneak around at night. It was VERY spooky.

LOVE Rick Nelson. Poor guy...the dumbest thing he ever did was marry that fucking shrew Kris. I've often wondered if he didn't somehow commit suicide by using that plane. He was warned repeatedly that it was unsafe. I mean, he wouldn't have consciously put his girlfriend or his band mates in danger, but damn. Kris had made his life a living hell by that point, and maybe he just didn't see any other way out. His two sons wanted to go with him on that last tour, and initially he agreed to it, but changed his mind at the last minute. That's always stayed with me.

by Anonymousreply 74February 5, 2017 4:59 AM

Could someone share any stories about his wife? Why was she considered crazy?

by Anonymousreply 75February 5, 2017 5:01 AM

Kris was a batshit crazy whack job with alcohol and drug issues. She was a nightmare, and she continued to make Rick's life hell after the divorce. I believe all of her children were eventually estranged from her.

by Anonymousreply 76February 5, 2017 5:08 AM

Kris and brother Mark Harmon's father was Tom Harmon who was a big handsome football star (LA Rams), WWII military hero and one of the first athletes to move on to a successful career in sports broadcasting. When Kris and Rick married it was father Tom who was the celebrity connection for the American public.

by Anonymousreply 77February 5, 2017 1:56 PM

R56, there are some WML videos on YouTube that show just the Mystery Guest, or one standard segment.

Ricky certainly did have a purdy mouth.

by Anonymousreply 78February 5, 2017 2:08 PM

There was a lot of tabloid stuff about Mark Harmon trying to take custody of the youngest child, Sam, from Kris because of her drug consumption. Kris allegedly threatened to disclose dirt about Mark and Pam Dawber if they publicized her dirty laundry, so some of it was hushed up. I once saw a book of 'folk art' paintings by Kris, who claimed that she was selling her artwork for thousands of dollars a picture. Kris and Ricky and the children were all beautiful. I felt bad for Tracey when she was dumped by Billy Moses.

It is a gentle show, even though it is fiction, it felt like you were watching real people, rather than gag after gag. I’ve read Tracy no longer speaks to one of the twins other than to discuss business matters.

Kris was awful and took her anger on the twins (mostly Gunnar who developed some life long self esteem and mental health issues). Pam and mark stopped the custody proceedings because kris’ attorney was going to ask Pam about cocaine use. Mark never spoke to kris again and he did end up partially raising Sam.

When Rick and kris divorced she had bankrupted him and he went out on the road for moats of the year. Kris’ attorney sent rick a letter stating he was behind in support (he wasn’t) so he picked up a few dates including the one he lost his life on.

Kris showed up to the funeral late and was furious because Rick had changed his llife insurance policies and made his kids, not kris the beneficiaries. Kris was convinced that Tracy was behind it and physically attacked her right after the service.

by Anonymousreply 97April 17, 2019 12:04 PM

I had not heard of Hexum until after he died. I did not watch much TV until 1988. When I was cleaning out a friend's stuff after he died in 1992, I found a box that contained possibly every article that had ever been written about him, mostly pages of pictures. He certainly was hot.

Turned out he died before I was even friendly with this friend, so he was never even mentioned in conversation. My friend did not have any other stars collected like this.

TRULY TRULY STUNNING rick/ricky nelson was.. when younger the epitome of a "pretty boy" and then older the epitome of a gorgeous man... YOU KNOW a person is truly beautiful if they can go from a pretty boy "look" to a handsome manly look... very very few men can cover the various bases of male beauty throughout one lifetime... ricky/rick nelson, jon erik hexum, steve reeves are few of the gods of rare air who were great examples of being so handsome and beautiful "it hurt your eyes" to see them...

Was Ricky a homosexual?

by Anonymousreply 110April 17, 2019 6:19 PM

I think you mean Christopher Reeve.

"Gorgeous to look at but about as fascinating as a wooden plank."

So what? I sure as hell would have fucked him.

I didn't even realize Kris had died last year until I went to check her wiki page today. RIP you crazy, drugged-out nutso.

My friend who worked in the hotel business says Ricky liked the boys.

by Anonymousreply 115April 17, 2019 8:15 PM

Has homosexual Mark Harmon had 'work done'?

by Anonymousreply 116April 17, 2019 8:18 PM

Buster Posey bears a striking resemblance to dear dead Ricky (except he keeps his hair too short).

by Anonymousreply 117April 17, 2019 8:33 PM

Never did a thing for me. Talented singer and handsome. All the credit where it is due. But it was DAVID that got me all hot and bothered. Ricky was just too....."aw shucks" and seemed too naive and, yes, BORING. I always felt that David would have been a nasty, hot fu#*. Rick? Dullsville.

by Anonymousreply 118April 17, 2019 8:52 PM

There was once a black and white picture in the media of Ricky Nelson frolicking in the Harmon' s Bel Air pool at family event which included a young sooan to be famous Mark Harmon. Anyone remember this photo. # eyecandy!

by Anonymousreply 119April 17, 2019 9:03 PM

If I believed in ghosts, I'd ask why would Errol Flynn haunt a house he had not lived in for years by the time the Nelsons bought it? Paul Lynde was one of the post-Flynn owners.

by Anonymousreply 120April 17, 2019 10:17 PM

In the circus movie shot at R43, his brother is quite a bit more attractive than Ricky.

by Anonymousreply 121April 17, 2019 10:32 PM

Van Williams was as hot, maybe even hotter than Rick/Ricky and deserves his own thread.

by Anonymousreply 122April 17, 2019 10:36 PM

We've done Van Williams.

by Anonymousreply 123April 17, 2019 10:50 PM

#109 AND #111, steve reeves,,and that's who i meant... it was GEORGE reeves and CHRISTOPHER reeves who played superman....

NO RESPECTING HOMOSEXUAL COULD EVER NOT KNOW WHO THE ONE AND ONLY STEVE REEVES WAS! LOL!..... (and before anyone's time is no excuse either!)....

by Anonymousreply 124April 17, 2019 10:59 PM

He did nothing for me, r124. I see this bunch of pics, and I don't really recognize him. I guess I'm not as self-respecting a homosexual as you are. Or maybe it's that I'm not into Muscle Marys.

loved ricky. loved his music. he was beautiful. i think have a control freak father like Ozzie definitely screwed up the whole family.

i bought his ex's book years ago. she was an incredibly talent primitive artist and there are tons of her work in the big book + stories about her life. some thing it was too subjective. i did not. a great read and gorgeous artwork. i did not know she passed away...

she used her name kris harmon tinker on this book as she was still married to mark tinker who is an American television producer and director. Tinker was an executive producer and regular director on the HBO series Deadwood.

Prior to Deadwood, Tinker served as a director/producer on NYPD Blue, which was co-created by Deadwood writer David Milch

This is going back 20 years, but there was a poster on the old "Is He/She Gay" board who claimed personal knowledge that Ricky and his brother were sexual with each other growing up.

by Anonymousreply 130April 18, 2019 8:26 AM

Ozzie Nelson was rumored to be horse-hung.

by Anonymousreply 131April 18, 2019 8:36 AM

Ozzie was cute too when he was younger.

There seemed to have been no transitional look for Ricky on the Ozzie and Harriet show. He was forever a geeky young kid with braces and a bad crew cut and then suddenly after a particular summer hiatus (what year would that have been - 1959?) he returned a full-fledged rock n roll teen idol hunk.

And then suddenly the entire TV show revolved around the career of Rick and his band while Ozzie fumbled around in the back yard with Don de Fore and Lyle Talbot while Harriet secretly smoked cigarettes in her pantry.

by Anonymousreply 133April 18, 2019 1:33 PM

R133 The ratings were probably falling around that time they needed to bring in a new younger audience.

by Anonymousreply 134April 18, 2019 2:19 PM

I saw him at a state fair way back at the peak of his popularity. I was just a child but remember being absolutely gobsmacked at how beautiful he was. One of those things you just never forget.

by Anonymousreply 135April 18, 2019 2:38 PM

So he’s dead?

by Anonymousreply 136April 18, 2019 2:40 PM

Beautiful man at every age. Few so photogenic all their lives.

by Anonymousreply 137April 19, 2019 4:53 AM

Handsome always and nice to Everyone. Never saw a bad picture.

by Anonymousreply 138April 19, 2019 6:55 AM

He was very photogenic but he looked much better with his mouth closed. He looked a bit goofy with his mouth opened, almost like he was smelling something bad.

The mold was broken when Rick died.

NO make up or mirrors can match his masculine beauty which unfolded in front of the camera in Black and white television.

by Anonymousreply 141April 20, 2019 3:31 AM

BC will never match / touch his beauty or real humility. A REAL Star.

[quote]there was a poster on the old "Is He/She Gay" board who claimed personal knowledge that Ricky and his brother were sexual with each other growing up.

Any details?

by Anonymousreply 143April 20, 2019 4:34 AM

r143, I think the poster called himself Bradley, said he was an architect, and that he was a neighbor of the Nelsons as a teen. He claimed to have had sex with one or both of the brothers, maybe in a threesome, the details are hazy in my memory. May have been just a fantasy. Our internet b.s. detectors were not as finely tuned back then as nowadays

by Anonymousreply 145April 20, 2019 6:11 AM

by Anonymousreply 146April 20, 2019 11:46 AM

Bill Cosby?

by Anonymousreply 147April 20, 2019 11:55 AM

I don't know what Wedding Crashers is, so I will have to google it. Thanks for the non-answer, asshole.

Boyd McDonald preferred David Nelson. Here he explains why:

"In Cruising the Movies, small details open up worlds of fantasy and playful speculation. McDonald ends his essay on The Big Circus with twenty-four questions about David Nelson’s tights: “Where did he toss his tights after a day’s shooting? . . . Did he get a hard-on while dressing or undressing? . . . Did anyone in the crew whistle when he walked onto the set in his tights?” He also suggests scenes that should’ve been made but weren’t, imagines offscreen escapades that were for some reason never recorded, and poses questions that the oblivious journalists failed to ask at the time. When David Nelson is drafted into the army in Peyton Place, why don’t they show him getting his physical exam? In Love Me Tender, when Elvis Presley’s big brother comes back from four years away at war, why doesn’t he check out “the progress Elvis had made in growing a man-sized dick and pubic hairs”? When Elvis took David’s brother Ricky aside at a party to give him advice about show business, might they have unzipped each other’s pants and had a feel? Cruising the Movies deals with fantasy rather than fact, but it’s as devoted to the specifics as Straight to Hell — like the imagined smell of an extra’s hair tonic, or the condition of a star’s underpants after a day’s work."

[quote]I always said the 1980s belonged to you if you were good-looking, white, and named Rick.

[quote]I always thought Matt was the name.

If you consider Matt Dillon maybe but who else? But my point was that the other major Ricks of the 1980s - Schroder, Astley, Springfield, and Moranis - made it to the 1990s safe and sound.

by Anonymousreply 151April 21, 2019 12:07 AM

I was talking about non-famous guys, r151. It seemed for a while in the '80s and '90s that everyone I met named Matt was fuckworthy.
