What Are You Bingeing?
What shows are you bingeing on these days?
Just finished "Sneaky Pete" on Amazon, It was very good. Not stellar, but definitely very good and worth the time. Ribisi is great, ditto Martindale and Cranston.
What else is good, esp on Amazon, Hulu, Netflix, HBO, SHO?

I'm bingeing The Expanse again, as well as Stranger Things and, for some inane reason, Good Morning Kiss on Netflix. GMK's a Japanese teen show, very weird and very "Eh!?" inducing. For even more bonkers Japanese Netflix shows, try "Atelier". It's about making women's undies.
Yes. Really.

R15, I wasn't sure I'd like it at first, but it was really interesting once I became familiar with the main characters. The show is well written and filmed, and you learn a lot about the characters' psychology. We binged a 2-3 episodes a night over a couple of weeks, and since the story lines continue from one episode to the next, I found myself really wanting to immediately move on to each new episode. There's some frontal male nudity, but not porn-level sex. Some graphic scenes - stabbings, medical issues, etc. If you find the first few episodes interesting, keep going with the series. You won't be bored.

"Messy Marcella" was a train wreck I just couldn't take my eyes off of! I would think Dataloungers would be all over her husband.
These days I'm watching a Netflix series called CASE - who knew Iceland was so fucked up? Police show up to interview the villain in a later episode, who happens to be nekkid; pulls on his penis while answering their questions.
For those of you with Amazon Prime, I caught the first (of three) episodes of a French courtroom drama/mystery called Barbara's Law. So good I'm saving the other episodes as treats later!
Love Fleabag!

[quote] 'Hinterland.' I got halfway through S.2 and couldn't stay awake.
I commend you. I couldn't get through the first series. Not only was it boring and unoriginal in its plot, but the show was risably grim. After a while, I couldn't stop laughing at the deliberately morose facial expressions of everyone. It was like, "OK. These grim, gritty, crime dramas are all the rage on cable tv. Let's have everyone dress in dark colors and look unhappy and nihilistic. Let's make sure we get plenty of shots of crumbling infrastructure and old houses. Let's make it gray, Really gray. And....rain. Let's have it rain. Let's have our characters sadly stare off at nothing. At the void. Because death. Because the senselessness of it all."

Just finished Unforgotten series 2. Excellent show. I am planning on watching Apple Tree Yard soon but Mark Bonnar appears in both of the series and I want to wait a week or two so I don't compare the two characters he plays too much.
Also watched the Swedish show Modus a few weeks back and also River which was originally a BBC show. They were both extremely good but River was outstanding.
Finally, if you're up for a bit of period drama then The Halcyon is very good and its run will finish in a couple of weeks.

The Magicians----kind of silly at times but entertaining.
I'm watching The People vs OJ Simpson. The actors who play Johnny Cochran and Christopher Darden are excellent as well as Sarah Paulson but they really should have gotten unknowns to play the rest of the Dream Team. Travolta is great at being campy as Robert Shapiro but the eyebrows bothered me and seeing Nathan Lane as F. Lee Bailey? I kept seeing Nathan, the Drag Queen from The Birdcage and Ross from Friends as Robert Kardashian.

The Expanse, Season 2 is much better than Season 1. Adapted from a Sci-Fi-FI novel series (which makes for better tv). It's more like The Martian, more scientific and plausible than you usually Sci-Fi crap. Plus Stephen Strait is hot.

I have binge-watched a lot of TV in the last year, and for my money, the best show of all has been "The Bureau," the French spy show which has had two seasons so far, both available on Sundance Now streaming. Second season is even better than first. You can get it as an add-on on Amazon Prime. I got it free for 2 weeks I think and was able to watch the whole show in that time (it's so addicting you can't stop). Much better than similar shows--Homeland, MI-5. Great drama but much more realistic than Homeland (which has been been mostly bad since season 2). Subtitles are in yellow and very easy to see. Also recommend the French version of The Returned (Les Revenants) but it's not nearly as good as The Bureau.

Carl Pilkington's new travel series, 'The Moaning of Life' on Netfli.x The one about death customs in other countries was fascinating. The guy bitches and moans in a Cockney accent about every single adventure he goes on. He makes me feel quite optimistic and upbeat by comparison!!! The Australian show "Off Spring." It's Bridget Jones meets "Grey's Anatomy" with a little "Modern Family" thrown into the mix. If you have Hulu, Scott and Bailey is a great English cop show (set in Leeds I think--anyway in the north of England somewhere) with a pair of women cops as the leads, and they are both magnificent. It was created by Sally Wainright, who also created Happy Valley and Last Tango in Halifax. It has (IIRC) 5 shortish seasons. Really terrific show. Their boss is also a woman who is a fabulous, very forceful character (and the actress who plays her wrote a lot of the episodes.) It's a little less dark than Happy Valley but just as good.

A Place to Call Home has one of the best casts ever assembled, gorgeous scenery and production values and attention to detail...and an amazing, compelling storyline. I think the creator is gay. He is a genius. Everyone I know who has seen this show, straight or gay, loves it. The plight of gays in the early 50s; women's changing roles; marriages of convenience, ethnic Italians vs. the gentry; the horrible treatment of Jews in WW II and how even the survivors of that still are faced with prejudice; marital jealousy; love blooming at young/middle/elderly stages of life; the meanest bitch to ever grace your television!; some very, very hot gay male characters--the farmhand and the Sydney doctor are fapworthy; a hilarious gossippy woman who knows everything about everyone; handsome men also in straigh roles--and two of the strongest, most independent female characters to ever grace your screen. I love this show and can't wait for season five, which is now filming. Rarely if ever has an American tv drama been this fantastic.
also loving Orphan Black, some great gays, hunks, and the amazing Tatiana Maslany playing a dozen characters.

A Place to Call Home. Gorgeously produced Australian soap (now with gays!). But, man, the actress playing the rigid, class-obsessed grandmother needs to dial it down and stop playing to the back of the balcony at the opera house.

Wentworth. Almost half way through series 5. I was uncommitted to this latest series, because of the death of a major character last season, but it has revitalized the show and made it fun to watch again... Loving Sigrid Thornton as the creepy Sonia.

DYNASTY. I wanted to watch the last ep of the first season and the first few of the second to see the cliffhanger and Alexis' courtroom appearance. I got hooked and am now midway through the final, reinvigorated season. I'll go back and watch the first which I've always found dull. Maybe my opinion will change, maybe not.
One question--did Linda Evans have a nose job after the first couple of seasons? Her nose appears to have shrunk. And it no longer matches her face.
by Anonymous | reply 277 | April 29, 2017 9:04 AM
|
^ I don't know about the nose job but there is a huge difference in the shows lighting (which gets progressively more harsh) from season two onwards. I found her to be truly breathtaking in season 1, but is noticeably harder looking during the court scene in 2. I think she had some kind of dermal resurfacing treatment done in between seasons.

Line of Duty is a Brit cop show you have to buy on Amazon, but it is so worth it---especially from Season 2 on.

In the US Line of Duty is on Hulu. I think I watched the first season on Amazon Prime or Netflix and seasons 2 and 3 (or whatever was available) on Hulu. It's a pretty good show. I assume there is another season 2 over in the UK. I'll have to check.
I keep reading about the ITV (or BBC?) show "The Unforgotten" with the great Nicola Walker, but for some reason it has never been available in the US. Can't figure out why--it's been in Australia and I think Canada, just not here. It looks like my thing (love British cop shows).

I've been watching the Turkish police show, R309. It's interesting, but at times it's heavy going so I don't watch very long at one time. The love story is clumsy, awkward and unnecessary. At times I've had trouble keeping track of the characters.
I enjoyed Lava Fields and Case and enjoyed both of them.
Dicte was far more interesting than Rita. Nothing wrong with Rita, but I admit I got tired of her flippancy and fucking every man she met for no discernible reason.

On HULU; CSI, CSI: MIAMI, SEINFELD, ITS ALWAYS SUNNY IN PHILADELPHIA.
It's evident to me that the original CSI deteriorated with each major casting change. And SEINFELD had as many bad episodes as it had good, and the series finale was majorly disappointing. And the acting on ITS ALWAYS SUNNY sucks.

We have the same taste, R315. Did you watch Nobel? I thought that was intense. Reminded me very much of a movie I saw... the Danish film A War. Similar plots.

I know, I know, I'm very late to the game but just finished "London Spy" and loved it. One of the only shows where being gay just isn't a character description but being gay is integral to the story, as is gay relationships, being in the closet and even gay anal sex is pivotal to the story arch.
And it doesn't hurt that both leads are very hot and best of all, Charlotte Rampling is in it.

Shetland on Netflix. It's a crime procedural series set in, well, Shetland. Not as dark as Scandinavian crime stories but stunning, isolated, water logged landscapes and isolation. Ideal to watch in the summer heat because all the characters are tromping around the bogs in wool sweaters and you can imagine the chill. The Scottish lilt is heavy but not so much that I've had to resort to captions.

Season 4 of Line of Duty was great - as suspenseful and gripping as the previous seasons. Thandie Newton is fantastic...between this and Westworld she should be bringing in heaps of awards this year.
For lighter fare, I recommend Casual, Rosehaven (Australia) and Season 3 of The Syndicate (a show about lottery winners in the U.K...each season is inclusive so you don't have to have watched the previous seasons. Season has hot-as-fuck British actor Richard Rankin.)

Love 'Shetland', especially Season 3 in which there was an ongoing story arc, as opposed to the episodic mysteries in Seasons 1 and 2. I have a crush on the lead, Douglas Henshall, who is one sexy daddy. I wish there were more scenes with Mark Bonnar- the two of them almost come across as estranged domestic partners (Bonnar plays his ex-wife's hubby).
Adapted from the mystery novels of Ann Cleaves. So is 'Vera', but I like 'Shetland' a lot more.

I love 12 MONKEYS, the underrated Sy-Fy series based on Terry Gilliam's movie.
It came out almost three years ago and is currently racing through Season 3 (all seasons are available on Netflix). I came for my straight-crush Aaron Stanford (he looks like a cute andro-lesbian in it) and stayed for the surprisingly complex and pacey plot (think Walking Dead meets 24 meets Quantum Leap).
Trust me that even if the pilot episodes put you off, you will not regret sticking with it - it is cheaply produced and a little hokey in places, but the series is surprisingly original, entertaining & charming.

I've watched a few episodes of Orphan Black series 1 with the clones. Thought it was a British show even though the accent of the lead seemed slurry but it turns out it's Canadian. It's interesting so far but has the potential to fall completely apart.
Also on Amazon Prime I watched something called "Facing The Fat" about a guy who decided to fast for 40 days subsisting on vitamin water. There was something about how ridiculous this was ( like the fact that he chose 40 days because of some biblical reference, that he had some crucifix to help him through, that he couldn't find a doctor to agree to monitor him until he ended up at some weird spa that had him doing colonics, that he had very unhelpful friends who made him barbecue the hot dogs he couldn't eat & that the names of Bill Clinton & Al Gore was invoked as politicians who avoided talking to him about American's being fat. Not sure if he was implying that Democrats make you fat but it's possible) that I had to complete it.
In the end he fasted for 55 days to try to break a world's record but Guinness refused to put him in their books as they didn't want to encourage people. He started at 315 pounds and lost 44 pounds. But they didn't do follow up so I googled the guy who had actually regained the weight and then some. The movie actually took place 10 years ago and at the beginning of this year he was 475 pounds but he's now on a healthier diet & excercise program that he documents on youtube and has lost about 100 pounds so far.
Lesson learned--there's a lot of weird documentaries out there that should have disclaimers like don't ever try this and fasting is not a good diet option.

r386, I hope you enjoy Midsomer Murders. A lot of people don't like it, but I really enjoyed them. I liked the scenery and the small town scenery. Yes, they can get a bit long, but I didn't mind. I'm currently bingeing Father Brown and then I'll be on to George Gently.

I find Midsomer Murders rather enjoyable and since the episodes are very long, if I watch before bed, they are better than a sleeping pill. There is no real need to get involved with the plot since nothing happens except random murders of people you have no interest in, so you can just let them lull you to sleep. And I don't mean this in a completely negative way. They are archetypal binge material, especially since there are so many seasons.
I've started recently on Doc Martin, but it is less sleep-inducing than MM, maybe because it's occasionally funny and Clunes has a lot of energy as a performer, still...there are a lot of seasons and nothing really exciting happens....so maybe take it with your sleeping pill rather than instead of.
As far as great TV that does the opposite of put you to sleep, The Bureau (Le Bureau des Legendes) is absolutely the best TV series in any language that I've watched in the last 3 years (and I watch a lot of TV these days). Just an incredibly written, acted and directed show and worth the money to subscribe to Sundance Now streaming. There are only two more episodes left in Season 3, so wait 'til it's over and then binge all three seasons. Don't worry about the subtitles. They're well done and easy to see. And if you have trouble with the first episode, don't give up--you'll be hooked soon if you have any interest in spy stories at all. It's been the most awarded series in French TV history by the way. If you become addicted as I have, come back here and say so.

Fleabag lovers are shit! I couldn't stand the main actress and her lame attempt to copy Miranda and Olivia Coleman (brilliant int the show even tho she's a bitch)

I'm a big Olivia Colman fan. Right now I'm making my way through Peep Show.
I had mixed feelings about Fleabag. I sort of liked the character's quirky nature, but at the same time the story really didn't seem to go anywhere. The main actress was also in "The Cafe" playing a ditzy hairdresser. I like "The Cafe" better because it created a really nice mood. Even though there's not a lot of plot in the show, the characters are all people I'd like to meet.

I just binged "Prime Suspect." Dame Helen Mirren had a different lover in every season. 7 seasons, 6 different lovers (they didn't give her a lover in season 7 because she was menopausal by that time). Girlfriend was a slut.
Ralph Fiennes shows up in Season 1 as a suspect. And the guy who plays Bates on Downton Abbey shows up, sans gimp, in the last season as her boss.

Must have spent around 20 hours over the last week watching HATFIELDS & McCOYS (3 or 4x over).
I came for Matt Barr's lusciousness, then stayed for that & everything else. I'm not even a fan of Costner but I have to take my hat (hah) off to the man, he has impressed me with this. Under Kevin's hand a soapy backwoods 'Dallas'-esque tale becomes something haunting & engrossing, and he has the wisdom to leave room for his crew & co-actors give their best while he takes a side role (for the most part).
Can Powers Boothe run for President? He has the perfect name & voice, plus all that gravitas.

Perry Mason. The TV show, not the TV movies. Started with season one. I like mysteries. Not a fan of shows with a lot of back story on the characters. For example I like the original Law and Order, but not so found of the others.
One thing I noticed is product placement. Not during the actual show, but the credits. Bottom right side of screen will be an image for product while the credits roll by. Dutch cleanser for example.

Recently finished Sensitive Skin ( we want more of Kim Cattrall) and Merlin--both on Netflix. Great casts and photography on both. Storylines on both generally great. Shows were cancelled too soon.
Started Sneaky Pete on Amazon. It seems like an interesting show. Finished Fleabag on Amazon. It was amusing but it started very engaging and funny, finishing with a desperate, "sweaty", dramatic storyline. Next season is due in 2019...not sure if I want to move on with it or not. I want to laugh...

Grace & Frankie. They just need to dial back on the kids. Theyre not interesting. And Tomlin outshines Fonda by a mile. Love the gay storyline, but I think Sheen & Waterston are miscast & have no chemistry.
Santa Clarita Diet. Laugh out loud funny black comedy about the undead. Doesnt hurt that Timothy Olyphant is in it.
Episodes. Matt LeBlanc is really good in this. The actress who plays Carol steals the show, whenever she appears. Funny, scathing send up of Hollywood.
I tried Girlfriends Guide to Divorce. After one episode, I wanted the whole cast to die, by flamethrower. Esp Lisa Edelstein. Shes horrendous.

I have watched a lot of streaming TV in the last year or so due to knee arthritis and then recovery from knee replacement. My favorite series in all that time has been "The Bureau," which was worth subscribing to Sundance Now for. It's a French spy series (their version of MI6 or the CIA) and extremely well-written and very authentic (unlike the ridiculous Homeland). I think the first 2 seasons are on Netflix (or Amazon Prime). There has been a third season which might require subscribing to Sundance Now--you can probably get a month or two weeks free and watch it all for free though. The subtitles are in yellow and very easy to read BTW.

Speaking of Danish series, Rita, which had a fourth season earlier this year, is really funny and addicting. I think the episodes are short IIRC, so you'll go through this in less than a week. A good antidote to all the depressing and stressful news out there. Also, "Catastrophe" on Amazon Prime (where Carrie Fisher plays the American husband's mother) is a hoot and also way to short (half-hour episodes and 6 episode seasons). Also another anti-depressant.

r508: I watched Marcella Season 1 but sort of had to drag through it--I agree, she is not an appealing character nor was anyone else in the series (and I got really sick of her fur collared jacket). Is Season 2 any better?

Yes r490, Evil Genius! Quite shocking in that first episode.
Everyone must watch, "Killing Eve". Much better than that "Fleabag" series that Phoebe wrote. Pure campy thrilling fun.
"La Mante" is sort of the French version of "Silence of the Lambs", but with a female antagonist.
"Call my Agent" (Dix Pour Cent) is a very funny take on the entertainment world in Paris, "A Very Secret Service" (Au Service de la France) is a farce in the classic 60's spy bureau theme.
There is the very under appreciated and unfortunately titled "Frankenstein Chronicles" staring Sean Bean, who has a very clever jab at the Sean Bean trope/meme. It runs in the "Penny Dreadful" vein, but a tad more realistic.
And the excellent, "Tabula Rasa" and "Hotel Beau Sejour", both slightly supernatural thrillers.

Babylon Berlin.
It was slow at first and took me a while to get interested but after the 3rd episode, it's pretty addicting. It's fascinating how they recreated that period so well, it looks so much like a late 1920 movie. It helps that Europe still has really old buildings. They would use CGI in regular Hollywood movies.

Interestingly enough, “The Mist” (which got terrible reviews) was brought to the screen by the same guy who created “Rita”, which was critically praised and has been often mentioned in this thread.

Rita's lead actress, Mille Diinesen (from memory so not completely sure of spelling) is a treasure--funny, sexy and a terrific actress. Rita is a mostly comic "dramedy." Isn't the Mist sci-fi/horror? Two completely different genres, no. Maybe the guy is better at comedy.

I just finished watching S1 of Stranger Things and don't understand all of the hoopla. Such a derivative series that unashamedly steals from much better shows and movies! And so many of the actors were so downright irritating, you wanted to punch them out. Add in a storyline that makes no sense whatsoever. I can't imagine watching S2.

I love Shetland and wouldn’t say it was particularly dreary considering the genre. But if it wasn’t to your liking for that reason, you should definitely avoid the Swedish and Danish detective dramas.

Finally gave in and started One Day at a Time. Had no idea it was a sitcom with a laugh track, not that I'm bothered by that. The first episode was a bit cringy, trying to appeal to everyone, but I got hooked by the second episode. The writing is so tight and it's incredible to me that a sitcom is dealing with all these woke themes. I wish more people watched it because I can only imagine it's not getting anything near Roseanne's (eugh) ratings.

[quote] Anyone know if there are going to be any more episodes of "Doc Martin" or "Last Tango?"
2018 is a hiatus year for Doc Martin. They will film one more season in 2019 and then they will call it quits.
Last Tango finished with the two part Christmas episode. I haven't heard they were going to do anymore. But all the actors have plenty of work to do. Nicola Walker is playing a divorce lawyer on "The Split." Sarah Lancashire did a mini-series called "Kiri" and is expected to film Season 3 of "Happy Valley" in 2019 if they can get time on James Norton's busy filming schedule and get Sally Wainwright focused enough to write Season 3. Anne Reid was the best thing about Alison Steadman and John Cleese's snoozer sitcom "Hold The Sunset." They should have made Anne the lead character and Alison/John supporting. Derek Jacobi was just in the starry Branagh "Murder On The Orient Express" and has several projects in the hopper.

I agree, and it really had some moments of sloppy writing. It walked a fine line between drama and soap opera. And I always wondered who the farm woman was friends with because in Season 2 every episode opens with a shot of her. Ha! If I were Samantha Bond, I would have been really pissed about that.
But when it was good, it was great. Spoiler alert, do not read any more of this paragraph if you haven't seen Season 2. When the blonde telephone operator joined the women's army and she was communicating over the radio with the airline pilot who she suddenly lost contact with...that was one of the most brilliant moments on the show. It was so well played and it made me choke up which I rarely ever do.

Anyone who is enjoying either Ellen Dorrit Petersen or Tobias Santelmann in Netflix BORDERLINER/Grenseland might also want to check out another great Norwegian drama which features them both in key supporting roles: Frikjent/AQUITTED. It's two seasons across 16 episodes.
It's filmed in a stunning Norwegian hamlet/fjord town and locales. Has a hot looking pocket silver Daddy type (Norwegian actor Nicolai Cleve-Bloch whose character is midlife - has an Asian wife who is a piece of work!); several really interesting family dynamics; a wonderful Norman Bates type dynamic with a mentally troubled older mother character; political-financial intrigue around international (Chinese Malaysian) ownership of a local Tech industry; and the whole storyline is built around an unsolved crime from more than a decade previously, of which our main character hot pocket silver fox Daddy was prime ('acquiitted') key suspect. Tobias Santelmann plays his younger brother.
I'm bingeing S2 now - Another one for fans of top notch Nordic family/crime drama.
