What is so great about Oprah?
Even when she was the highest paid entertainer in the world, her attention seeking made me cringe. Great that a pudgy black woman made it so far in a world run by old white men squiring tanorexic Barbie wannabes awash with bleach, botox and implants, but all I want for Oprah is a fucktonne of therapy so she can stop wanting to impress everyone, and have a normal relationship with food and exercise.
And FFS, get rid of a magazine named after her which she features on the cover of every fucking month.
Can't someone just duct tape her into a wheelchair and deposit her in the offices of a really good shrink, on condition she doesn’t get re-released into the outside world until she can behave like a modest, humble adult?
WTF is so great about her?

She used to be here in Baltimore on people are talking with Richard sher, when she first got here, there was a big billboard that said What is an Oprah? I never dreamed she become what she did. Astonishing.

She was a pioneer for adjacent white guy standards.
That being said, I preferred hot silver daddy Phil Donahue. I miss him and Keith Olbermann. They'd rip a dumbass a new one.
Oprah? Uma? Both ladies fierce asskickers.

I never really liked her but the fact that she keeps putting herself, and only herself, on every single issue of a magazine with her name emblazoned in huge font on the cover is insane. I could see her not wanting it to be a different celebrity every month or not wanting it to look like People magazine or something but, fuck, just put a picture of a waterfall or a few trees or some damn windmills or something. Sick of her damn face.

Her Super Soul Sunday program is mindnumblingly boring. I canceled my subscription to OWN network 2 years ago.

Oprah got stinking rich from being a late 20th century incarnation of "Mammy", a plump, non-threatening black woman with no discernible sexuality, handing out advice to a mostly white female audience.
I'm not condemning Oprah for this, it was actually quite clever on her part.

Oprah WAS great until she got all new age and spiritual (see also Olivia Newton-John)
Kind of like when Louise Jefferson stopped pulling her hair back in a bun and went from the "down home" Wheezy to the coiffed "Help Center" Wheezy.

Agree with r17. I liked her 80s talk show, even if it was another clone of the Donahue Show. Back then, the show belonged to the audience, and most of the time was dedicated to audience member questions. But it morphed into Oprah asking all the questions, with the audience just observers there to applaud for the guest...and for Oprah. In the early 90s, she jumped on the trashy ambush-style talkshow bandwagon that made Rikki and Jerry successful. Then suddenly she realized she needed to be different. So she gave her little on-show speech on how she was above that style of talk show. I think that was around the time she decided to record herself singing her own theme song. WTF. Soon the show featured fewer and fewer experts, just Oprah interviewing people and preaching. I remember when one season ended with a cliffhanger "Will Oprah quit the show, or will she continue for another year." On the next season's premiere, Oprah speechified that she'd love to hang it up, but she had a responsibility to continue the show...for society. And worst of all, every episode, even those shows that featured guests with heart wrenching stories, began with Oprah making a grand entrance to a two-minute standing ovation. Why not edit out the standing ovation and give more time to the questions and the stories? Nope. Apparently, we...and Oprah...needed to see that two-minute standing ovation. Each and every day.

Cannot stand her but admire her ability to tap into other people's insecurities to her own advantage, peddle them a load of let's-join-hands-and-sing-Kumbya horseshit and make a gazillion bucks. As for her weight problems? Easily solved with a bowl of porridge each morning, a head collar with her tethered to the back of the car and made to run 10 miles each day.

Oprah Winfrey got her first break doing the local news over in Nashville TN. A local news man (a jack of all trades, if you will) by the name of Chris Clark got her that first break. A lot of bigots came after that fellow and he didn't let that stop him from having Oprah Winfrey on the news and all.
Chris has never or will ever ask Oprah Winfrey for shit and she knows that about him. But, even when he retired, she didn't even send him a card or anything even though her very own father told her about it.
Oh. Speaking of her "father" He isn't a bad man really. Oprah harbors resentment towards him for petty things even though that isn't even her biological father. Oprah didn't get into Fisk (a very highly regarded TN Hbcu) or Vanderbilt (sometimes called the Harvard of the South). But she did get into TSU (more humble than Fisk) and her dad paid for it 100% of the way.
I know that Oprah went through some hell here and there. But she is basically an ungrateful bitch with a thing or two. I'm sorry.

When she was at Tennessee State -- she dropped out after starting her TV news career -- she unsuccessfully rushed Delta Sigma Theta, a historically black sorority. Delta's national council later offered her honorary membership, which she grandly declined by saying something PC along the lines of "All black sororities are wonderful and I wouldn't want to appear to favor one over the other." Supposedly, though, she's always felt the TSU chapter didn't want her because she was too dark-skinned.

r23 that was one vindictive move to allow her stepmother's house to foreclose, buy it cheap, then bar her stepmother's grandchildren from returning. For those who didn't read the article, the home in question was paid in FULL, but O's stepmom foolishly mortgaged it in order to complete repairs on the barbershop owned by O's father. O refused to assist with the cost of the repairs of her father's 50 year old historic shop.

Didn't she have some DNA test done several years ago that determined which African tribe her ancestors belonged to? And she wasn't happy with the result and then paid somehow to have it changed to Zulu?

While I was on summer break between my first and second year of college, I took some classes at my local community college, Manchester Community Technical College (MCTC). I took a Sociology 101 class. The professor said it was common knowledge, in the circles she was part of in Connecticut, that Oprah and Gayle King were a couple. This was during the time Gayle was a local anchor at WFSB.
I'm still on the fence as to whether I believe it. It's kind of a stupid thing to lie about. The professor could have name dropped without making up the part about Oprah and Gayle being a couple.

She initially got rich with her book about how to lose weight. She made a fortune off of it and then gained all the weight back and more. But she was rich, very rich.
Her silence about Trump is cowardly and inexcusable. I have lost whatever respect I had left of her.

Read Part 2 of this article. Why would Barbara Winfrey suggest that she would still be in a relationship with O's father if O had tried to get to know her? She was in a relationship with the father not Oprah. This woman was a Vice Principal for 32 years?!? Some of her decisions don't make her look very bright.

She’s a chubby little black chick who started on junk tv. Nancy Glass is a tall Jewish girl who started on junk tv. Oprah went on to be a demigod (which baffles me as much as it does OP). Glass went on to be Linda Dano’s foil on Attitudes, and then she went on to be nothing.
So why did one 80s junk tv “reporter” with big feet go on to the galaxy, and the other go on to an office behind the Applebee’s in the business district of Bala Cynwyd, PA?

Why does any talk show host or talk show reach the stratosphere; while others fail? The work is not brain surgery. Millions of people adore Winfrey and find her to be engaging. Millions of people felt the same way about Johnny Carson and Ed McMahon. Why? Anyone could do what they did. Recite corny jokes written for them and chat with celebs. Millions of people adored Rosie O’Donnell. Millions of people adore Ellen Degeneres. Why?
