Becoming a licensed, legit massage therapist in many states (such as NY) is not easy. The educational requirements are lengthy and expensive, and the licensing exam is intense. California and a few other states do not have strict licensing requirements so a lot of people there call themselves "massage therapists" who have nowhere near the background/training of therapists in other states. They may give a decent massage, however. Not many massage therapists go on to become physical therapists, as PT work now requires a doctorate degree. Quite a lot of massage therapists become certified trainers because then they can legally give strengthening and conditioning advice to their therapeutic massage clients. Hope this clarifies a bit.
