Hopefully there will be additional episodes with Tovah Feldshuh and Patt Lupone.
I hadn't heard of this show until I saw an older thread on here. I just finished watching the second episode of season 1. I have a few thoughts...Santino whatever his name is fucking adorable! I had seen photos of him before and never thought much about him, but, on camera, he is smoking hot. The lead is annoying as hell. She is so certifiable, and there aren't any moments when you think she is someone you might want to spend time with, that I don't know if I will watch any more episodes. I do love the acting of the rest of the cast and the songs are funny, but she is just too unpleasant and clueless to want to watch again. Does it get better? Does she calm the fuck down?

Show needs more shirtless David Hull.

Not that we should expect complete coherence in a sitcom, but there's a huge gaping plot hole in this show that bugs me. Josh lived in NYC for several years before he moved back to California. It portrays his girlfriend, Valencia, as being a serious gf who is jealous and won't let Josh be alone with other girls. There is no way they would have had a long-distance relationship, and it is obvious that the gf didn't live in NYC because of her yoga classes. I know it's dumb to let that bother me, but the writers could have had a more realistic or coherent set up.

He was in NYC for 8 months and they were a serious HS couple, he moved back for her.

I binge watched both seasons and really enjoyed it.
Not sure I'm going to enjoy Rebecca now (probably) hooking up with her new (asshole-ish) boss after two seasons of her chasing Josh.
But he's now pretty unredeemable ........... he should've just forced the issue regarding her previously unknown mental issues and stalking of her old professor.
But that wouldn't be dramatic enough.
Not sure if they'll bring back Rebecca's crazy 'ex-boyfreind' ........... he got a bit creepier (than Rebecca even) by the end.

I've watched the first 11 episodes or so. The first 5 all made me laugh really hard; the rest provoked a smirk at most. I'm still watching it because the characters are likable and the storyline is interesting.

Anybody been watching? The last few episodes have been terrific dealing with Rebecca’s mental illness.
Also, I have such a crush on Erick Lopez, who plays Hector. So cute!

Still must-see TV for me though the songs haven't been as funny as the prior seasons. I really hope it makes it through to the planned 4th and final season.
[quote] the gf didn't live in NYC because of her yoga classes.
She is so good at yoga I expect she could do both.

I didnt realize that the new season had started. I didn't love the previous seasons, but I kept watching, hoping it would get better. One show that I wish was renewed: Downward Dog. It's the best series Ive ever seen. It's a shame that it didn't find its audience.

I just watched the first show. I love everything about it...except the lead. I'm sure Rachel Bloom is a lovely person, but her character on the show is simply unwatchable. She's a horrible, psychotic, ridiculous character, which is a shame, because the other characters on the show are adorable and charming. She is the big black hole in the middle of a show.

Did you miss the show's title " Crazy Ex-Girlfriend"? Essentially her character is a musically hallucinating psychopath with double D cups.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | November 20, 2017 4:10 AM |
Ha, R14. Yes, she is the Crazy ex, but couldn't she show SOME sympathetic moments, to soften her a bit, to make us want to root for her just a little? There should be just enough kindness in her to make us feel terrible to think she's a crazy psycho, but, as it is, she is unequivocally awful.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | November 20, 2017 4:17 AM |
I think it’s a bold move to not make the female lead likable. And why not? Men have been doing it for years.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | November 20, 2017 11:41 AM |
Yes, they have, R16, but the difference is the men have done it in a Machiavellian way, and there is some tacit agreement that what they stand to gain by being unlikable is worth getting: Success. Freedom. Money. But in this case, what does she stand to gain? Not much, so her psychosis is harder to forgive. It's too bad, because, to me at least, it's a huge gap in an otherwise good show.

by Anonymous | reply 19 | November 20, 2017 2:40 PM |
I'd been waiting for a group of episodes to be available before starting to watch this season, but I think I'll get started this weekend. It's so hard to pick just one favorite from the past shows, but I think my number one has to be "Research Me Obsessively."

[quote]"When he decided that this show didn't work for his schedule, we took that Greg storyline and moved it all up," co-creator and showrunner Aline Brosh McKenna told press at the Television Critics Association press tour, coming just shy of saying whether or not they'd asked Fontana if he'd return. "In thinking about bringing him back, we reached out to let him know we were doing that."
So, did they ask Santino Fontana back or not? It sounds like there might be a little bad blood...
by Anonymous | reply 26 | August 9, 2018 5:07 PM |
Why did Santino leave anyway? I know he was doing Shades of Blue, but was able to do both shows for a while.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | August 9, 2018 6:08 PM |
I had no idea this show wasn't toast yet. I saw the first 2 seasons and thought they announced it was cancelled. Glad it's still kicking as long as it hasn't become a sad shell of its former self.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | August 9, 2018 6:15 PM |
The first 5 episodes made me laugh. Then it stopped being funny and the songs became cringy. I persisted because at least the characters were likable. But I could only watch until episode 11 or 12 of the first season.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | August 9, 2018 8:28 PM |
The previous Greg looked way too old to be part of the gang of friends, even with his augmented hair. Though I liked the actor, it makes more sense to recast with someone who looks younger.

NuGreg didn't really work--just too lightweight and not nearly as expressive a singer. It threw the last season off-balance--I think they kind of knew it, too--the character was kind of put off to the side. It's a real shame they couldn't get Fontana back. Wonder what went down because it seems like an otherwise happy cast and pretty much everyone got a moment to show what they could do. Fontana got some of the show's best songs and scenes.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | April 13, 2019 7:04 AM |
I really want to go to one of the concerts. The song special after the finale was wonderful.
One of my top three shows all time. I'm sad it's over, but they ended it so well. Bloom is so fucking talented it's scary.

I couldn't get used to the new Greg because Santino was just so fucking good. There was history between Santino's Greg and Rebecca but with the new Greg, it didn't feel the same. They should have offered him more money but I suspect there may have been bad blood. Too bad, Santino had such a gorgeous voice and sang one of the show's best songs.

Since the original Greg didn't come back, I was hoping she's end up with Nathaniel, played by the sexy hot Scott Michael Foster.

Or even with. Remember how Neil Patrick Harris couldn't recognize her even though she appeared on his show.

Most of the actors have good musical theatre credits--Santino and Donna Lynne Champlin have both starred on Broadway. Given the show's low ratings and the in-show jokes about the budget, I'm sure the pay's not great. Santino Fontana's been touring in Tootsie, which opened on Broadway a few weeks ago--so there were some legitimate conflicts, but if they'd really wanted him, more money probably would have brought him back.
He did come back in Season 2 to give the show a chance to close out his storyline--and they liked him well enough to write him some great music--but I'm sure there were issues. Reading between the lines of a NYT interviews, it sounds like he's played a lot of second leads (i.e. the Prince in Cinderella) Greg would have been one more of those. In Tootsie, he's the lead-lead.
From the NYT: The word “intense” came up a lot when colleagues discussed Mr. Fontana. Also: “Smart” and “passionate” and “focused.” Is someone so “focused” tough to work with? A lot of people will recognize Mr. Fontana from “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend,” a popular television comedy that he insisted on exiting, a possible red flag. (For the record: He says he left because he’d never intended to do an hourlong series, because his wife’s career is in New York, because he missed theater. TV can wait until he’s “tapped out,” he said. Skylar Astin now plays the role.) .....
But it's a damn shame, just looking back at clips, he was damned good as Greg--the voice, but also the layers he gave to the part--the anger, the hurt, the tenderness, the acid humor--it's all there. I think he might not have recognized what he had in the show--how unique it was. While it's television ratings sucked, it's survived because it's popular on streaming services--both in the U.S. and overseas. Also it had a creative team that really worked to showcase the performers. "It was a Shitshow" was written because Fontana wanted a Sinatra-style song.
I think the other performers figured out that they had a good, if low-paid, gig going. The kind you don't get very often.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | April 13, 2019 10:12 PM |
I was just as well pleased they got rid of Greg and saw no need at all to bring him back. The new guy replacement in the triangle worked just fine.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | April 13, 2019 10:29 PM |
The problem with bringing back Greg was that it was played by a totally different actor. It would have been better to bring back Santino and throw a lot of money at him or not bring back the character at all. With Skylar, even though he was an okay actor, it was like introducing a new character and he didn't have the depth that Santino had.
btw, now that it's playing on Netflix, maybe more people will discover it and ask for its return.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | April 14, 2019 12:34 AM |
Donna Lynne Champlin was the true MVP. I wish she would be recognized with an Emmy for the final season.
by Anonymous | reply 46 | April 14, 2019 12:38 AM |
Doubt that would happen R45. Rachel always planned for it to be 4 seasons.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | April 14, 2019 12:57 AM |
R44, I thought Nathaniel worked fine--and while I see why they felt the need to bring back the Greg character, if they couldn't get Fontana back, they'd have been better off without Greg instead of bringing in the Disney Prince version of Greg.
by Anonymous | reply 48 | April 14, 2019 3:32 AM |
I could see the show coming back in maybe 5 years for a season or two. I'm very happy with how it ended.
I agree on DLC. I really hope she finds something quick.

I suspect Rachel is worn out on this show. It had to be exhausting to write the number of songs she did in so many genres, and then do the dancing and acting on top of it.
by Anonymous | reply 51 | April 14, 2019 4:09 AM |
Rachel and the producer planned the ending from the beginning.
That is why they brought back a character and the actor who played him did not want to return, he got Tootsie.
She is doing concerts now, two sell outs at the London Palladium in June, rumor is that it will lead to an EU tour as she is more popular here than in the US.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | April 14, 2019 10:55 AM |
Is she doing the tour with her cast members?

No. Right now only two solo dates in London.
Rumor is that more EU dates are coming.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | April 14, 2019 4:46 PM |
Most of the cast has either moved on, or will move on, to other work so it's nearly impossible to tour together.

Santino Fontana, the original's Greg, has been nominated for a Tony award for Tootsie on Broadway. Maybe that's why he didn't return to the show.
I still wish he played Greg.
