There must be quite a few celebs who have the houses, the cars, the fabulous clothes, the lifestyle, etc. to maintain an image of glamour and success but don't have the income to back it all up.
Which celebrities are living beyond their means?

Depp didn't actually give Vanessa all that's reported in cash on one lump sum. I believe he structured a settlement which calls for timed payments. Payments which are still depemdent on his future earning power or selling assets. Her willingness to protect his image was expected.

I don't think that Pete Burns ever made much money. A couple of hit singles in the 1980's isn't going to support you into your old age. He wasn't even that well paid (compared to others) for his reality show appearances.
Even his £450,000 settlement for botched surgery wouldn't buy a cupboard in central London and would quickly go in rent.

To answer above, the way these people screw up is they imagine the money's always going to be rolling in. by Anonymous | reply 88 | January 18, 2017 2:20 AM |
It's a shame. They are usually from families who have never had anything and are then plucked from high school and focus on nothing but sports for the duration of their adulthood. During the college years they're starving students while putting education on the back burner to keep up with the schedule of a college level athlete. Schools make millions off of them each year and they have no money left after dorms, tuition, and books. Once they get into the NBA everyone has a hand in their pocket. They're immature because they've never done anything adults have had to do. Eat, sleep, shit basketball.
by Anonymous | reply 89 | January 18, 2017 2:33 AM |
r89 the ones you describe are far from the starving students. No they can't go out to the Cheesecake Factory every week, but they get a very generous meal plan. Housing would also be taken care of unless they become to good for the dorm and try moving off campus. The rest seems about right.
by Anonymous | reply 90 | January 18, 2017 3:50 AM |
When I say starving student I didn't mean literally starving, I just meant no income. The top athletes do not have time for part-time jobs and it's illegal to take funds, even though the coach at my unversity routinely bought things like underwear and other essentials for some players. I was an athlete until the end of my freshman year, but I never had any intent on going pro. I also went to school in state so I always had left over funds after tuition costs.

Most former child TV and especially Disney stars (who don't go to college and miss out on that period of little income coming in) cannot adjust their expectations when their producers and agents no longer fork out for stylists and car service. The fortunate ones manage to luck into a movie franchise, some Oscar bait or get another series in early adulthood and can recalibrate their careers.
Social media whores like Bella Thorne and Zendaya should save for a rainy day lest they become another ill, broke and ripped-off by their stage mom former fashionista like Mischa Barton or have to work the yachts like Lindsay Lohan.

If you've ever seen "The Queen of Versaille" about the Siegel family (he made his fortune in Las Vegas and Florida timeshares), with the housing crash he almost went broke. He was raking in millions, but spending like a drunken sailor, building huge homes for himself he could never re-sell, paying huge staff, and he was addicted to cheap loans to expand his business. Nowhere in there did he set up passive income.
A relative married into a wealthy family but the truth is nobody knows the actual personal net worth of the in-laws, because their money comes from an extremely successful business and who knows if there's a real line of demarcation between what the business is worth and personal worth. She and her husband want to divorce, but his only income is a "stipend" from a trust fund. It's low six figures, but it's not even the income from the trust fund, it's a stipend from it. He gambles and does drugs and spends money on strippers. In their preliminary talks about separating, it's considered that she'll stay in their house (which neither owns - it's owned by the "trust") and he'll move elsewhere. Another wrinkle - he's coming into seven figures soon. She told me she is wary about staying in the house (they have a child) because she thinks he'll blow through those seven figures and *have* to move back in. I said - are you kidding me - why doesn't he set up passive income to supplement his trust stipend? He'll be in great shape. She said - nope, he'll spend it until it's gone. And she's probably right.
I don't get it either. Me at any opportunity to generate enough passive income so I was set for life no matter how un-lavish the lifestyle, I'd jump on it. People don't. People who win the lottery in the seven figures blow through the money. I heard a story from a guy whose daughter's boyfriend won the lottery. This guy is a security guard. The boyfriend gave his girlfriend 100k, even though they broke up shortly afterwards. What did the daughter do but buy thousand dollar purses and take lavish vacations. The dad was just shaking his head, but the daughter was all, "live for today, I deserve this." I dont get it at all.
by Anonymous | reply 119 | January 19, 2017 12:38 AM |
I bet the security guard doesn't know that when you give a gift over $14,000*, the giver, meaning "he", owes "gift taxes" on it.
*the limit changes every year. It's about $14,000 now.
I can't imagine what the tax is. It's not small.

Lana Wood said her sister Natalie was extremely wealthy at her death, having invested in lucrative properties like shopping centers. I think Natalie Wood's biggest extravagance was clothes, which, at her level, is not doing too badly. When she died I think her husband still had Hart to Hart. Even that yacht, Splendour, that they were on when she died doesn't look like a Hollywood yacht, but sort of a regular "We like boating" yacht.
I would bet Yoko Ono is in great shape. She's never moved from the Dakota and has never been known to spend up a storm.
I think Britney Spears' family stepping in and having the court set up a conservatorship when they did saved all of her assets. Her father still worked as a chef, but received "only" $2,500 a week as conservator, which considering the size of her interests and that he was on call 24/7, is a bargain arrangement. They gave her just enough rope. She could go into a store and drop 10k on clothes on impulse and that was ok, but she couldn't buy an island or yacht on impulse. Despite what some people think, I believe she likes to perform even though maybe she shouldn't, so when deals like X-Factor or Vegas came along, it was ok for her to sign up for it. It would produce income and give her an ego boost and something to do, and when she burned out on it or tired, no damage was done. I think her family did/does a good job.

R120, I wasn't clear. The dad was the security guard. He has a daughter. I don't know what the boyfriend did before he won the lottery. The security guard told the story of his kid getting 100k from the boyfriend, and as soon as she had it, she was just spending, spending, spending. He was appalled. Her attitude was she was entitled to these things, would never have an opportunity to get them, and she deserved it. There was no need to say anything to the security guard because he already knew.

My nephew is a minor celebrity and a doofus. I am sorry that I cannot name him because I do love him and won't do that. You might recognize the story, though, as I believe he publicly talked about it like it was a big joke, which it was not.
He won $300,000 gambling. He has a gambling problem. Then he gambled the money away. He failed to get evidence of the loss, so he owed income taxes on the $300,000; and lacked the write-off that would have erased the income tax as it would have reduced the income to $0. It took a long time before his Mom worked with the IRS to make it go away. I feel so bad for my sister, it must make her very sad that he is so incapable of living in society according to its rules and is do dependent on her.
He skipped his Grandfather's funeral and his 10 year-old cousin's funeral the following week. Later we learned he had travelled from hours away where he lived, to the nearby casino, during one (or both) of the funerals. He was 40 minutes away, at most, and didn't bother to stop by.
He never does anything for anyone, but (only occasionally) asks for favors, and then feels ashamed about being unaccomplished. I think he's a sociopath. I still love him, but know not to expect any kind of love or attention of any kind from him. I'm his favorite Uncle, too. I think he likes that I'm Gay and Out. But still, he's addicted to drama and a soul-sink.

Celebrity or not, many people are genetically wired to live beyond their means. I'm a mortgage underwriter for a major lender in a division that does not do sub-prime loans. The number of people with incomes of $50,000 a month or more who have credit scores too low to lend on is astounding. On the other hand you see the couple who are fruit packers in rural Oregon who make less than that in two years who somehow manage to maintain A+ credit for decades.

I've never understood how RIchard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor sustained the lifestyle they had when they got together. Elizabeth's record-setting salary for Cleopatra was one million. I don't think Richard Burton got paid that much ever. The Hope Diamond he purchased for her was supposedly much more than a million.
How did he keep her in yachts and diamonds when all of their joint movies flopped, and neither had a hit after they got together? Suppose they had inflated salaries for a couple of films each. There's the boat. The homes. The jewelry. The kids! She had four. He had two (overlapping one of hers, Liza). Jessica, his disabled daughter, was somebody he made financially independent when she needed lifetime care.
During the peak of Elizabeth Taylor's career - not her fame - her career - she was under studio contract. I don't believe she had a percentage of the box office.
Anyhow, a lot of kids, a lot of expenses, and for both, failing movie careers. How did they keep it afloat?
by Anonymous | reply 127 | January 19, 2017 4:28 AM |
Well Burton did tons of bad movies in his later years r127. It seemed like he needed to do a lot of stuff for the money. (Exorcist II supposedly nearly killed him he was drinking so much during it.)
Taylor had her perfumes and stuff which probably brought her in a lot of money. "These have always brought me luck comrade!!!!"

During her later years, LA society knew that the way to meet the legendary Liz Taylor was to buy her some new diamond jewelry. And not just some little thing from Kay's, or even the choicest brooch from Harry Winston, but ideally have a top jeweler send over a tray of fabulous things and let her pick out what she liked at your expense. A few hundred thou worth of exquisite jewels, and she was your best pal!
I have to admit, that's the single best retirement financial plan I've ever heard of.

Angelina Jolie hasn't earned much in recent years, she hasn't done many films and few of them have been successful. And now she's paying an army of lawyers and publicists to fuck over her ex-husband, so she's got to be spending more than she earns at the moment.
However, getting child support payments for six minor children of a very wealthy man has got to be worth a fortune, and if she didn't sign a prenup then her share of the Jolie-Pitt community property would be impressive. Pitt's starred in successful films and produced others while they've been married, she's entitled to community property shares of that she'll be able to keep herself in lawyers until all six kids are grandparents.

What about actors who have say, one popular tv show that runs for a couple of seasons. How do they get by after the show ends? How long do the residuals last, can they renegotiate their contract if the show becomes a hit.
by Anonymous | reply 131 | January 19, 2017 9:09 AM |
I remember Jason Alexander talking about the salary he and the rest of the cast of Seinfeld were earning. He said "This is it. This is the window. Most actors don't get a hit show, most don't have another one before or after their hit show." Based on that, I'm presuming he invested his Seinfeld money. Surely he also gets residuals, although I don't know what the percentage would be.
I don't think Alec Baldwin is living above his means. He has a home in the Hamptons and an apartment in Manhattan. He had three kids very quickly with his yoga teacher spouse. She's a publicity whore but she's not a big spender. She doesn't go around the city buying up a storm. She doesn't spend a lot on clothes or jewelry. I think his family probably has had its hand out a lot over the years. He also has a voiceover career.
Rappers. I'm a Cesar Millan fan, and I was always curious how come for so long his dog Daddy (now deceased) was described as being co-owned by rapper Redman. Redman was on the radio talking about it, saw it on youtube. He got Daddy as a puppy sort of impulsively, and then parked the dog with Cesar when he was too busy. I thought 'touring' but Redman was very vague about what he was too busy doing all those years. Then it seems to me that as his career sort of waned and Millan's profile went up and he got a TV show, Redman kept the dog figuring he could extract a lot of $$$ from Cesar Millan for full ownership of the dog. Redman went on and on about how Daddy "made" Cesar Millan, how the dog was the reason Cesar Millan got famous, and how one day Cesar's people went to Redman with documents and said "it's time to sign over the dog." Redman did it because if he insisted he was still the owner, he'd owe Cesar Millan a ton of money for Daddy's vet bills, boarding and other care. He hadn't paid a dime in years. He sounded a little begrudging about it all, still thinking Cesar Millan should have given him money for all Daddy did for Cesar Millan's career. but I guess Millan finally called his bluff.
Liz Taylor - even with her habit of extorting jewelry from her neighbors, in the 1960s the Burtons had a yacht. She was dripping with jewelry. They went around with an entourage of animals, children, and staff.
I really doubt Angelina Jolie lacks a pre-nup. I suspect they got married in order to get a divorce, and Pitt wasn't going to leave his entire income vulnerable to her. But the two of them with two nannies per kid, private jets everywhere. Over the years staff members have spilled stuff about them, such as Brad Pitt buying so much art he just stashes it in closets sometimes. I'd imagine the kids each have a trust fund set up - or they should. When people like the two of them are riding high it appears that the money could sustain entire countries, but I guess when you spend like that it runs out.

R132, thanks for the story on Redman and Milan. I would've never guessed that they had a connection. Redman had to have made more money than Milan at that time. He must've gone broke if he was worried about that. There were tons of endorsement deals, movies, tv, music. Sad(Donald voice).

Joan Collins has seemed to have lived a pretty thrifty existence, despite all the glamour and prestige. She had some pretty lean times in the 70's and seemed consciousness that the money from Dynasty would not last forever unless she diversified. She had a fondness for costume jewelry even when she could afford the real thing, claiming she could never tell the difference anyway (of course she wore the real thing as well). Joan was such a penny pincher she was even reluctant to turn on her air conditioning or heating unless she really felt she had to.

I suspect almost all of them do, and have for centuries. Actors' memoirs from 100 years ago or more told how they'd go out in a fur coats looking like a million bucks even if they lived in an unheated closet, because they had to keep up a "front", to look as impressive as possible if they wanted to dork. Nobody would hire them if they looked failing or desperate, and I suspect it's the same.today.

Because if there was ever a performer who'd spend her last dime on looking good, in the belief that living and looking like a celebrity is what brings in the next offer, it'd be Jennifer Lopez.

Olivia Newton-John done some major downsizing in recent years and has/had a residency show in Vegas and regularly tours the casino circuit. She didn't write her music and her last top 10 hit was in early 1984. She sold her home in Palm Beach and moved into a relatively modest condo on Juniper Island. She's not broke by any means, but between a few bad business ventures, a divorce, and supporting a high maintenance adult daughter she doesn't have the fortune that people think she has. Plus the fiancee that faked his death may have fleeced her for quite a bit of money.
A lot of older performers that are on the casino/smaller venue circuit have to work to support/keep up with their lifestyle, as well as supporting first, second and sometimes third families.

R131, actors don't get to negotiate until after season 4, and as we know, most shows don't make it that far. About a decade ago, an entry level salary for a full time cast member on a network show was around 20k-30k/episode. Once you take off taxes and agent and etc, it's good money, but not retirement money. There was a good article recently that discussed how, particularly with streaming services, salaries have been dropping unless you're already a huge name.
I think of somebody like Rachel Bloom who is ridiculously creative, and is shooting her entire creative wad on Crazy Ex Girlfriend, but it probably only bring in 30k an episode. Over 13 episodes, that ain't much.
