Back in the day, Buicks were for old people. CADILLACS were the car of choice for blacks.

Buicks, Cadillacs, Pontiacs, Oldsmobiles are/were all brands manufactured by GM, headquartered in Detroit, MI. At one time these brands were off limits to blacks because GM wanted to maintain an image of prestige and exclusivity. By the Great Depression, the auto industry was in shambles and GM was about to shutter its luxury brands. One executive, however, observed that many well-heeled African Americans--boxers, musicians, doctors, and lawyers--were driving around in GM cars that they had white people front for them. So, GM brilliantly began targeting the African American market and they ate it up. From that point on, GM cars have been the car of choice for many upwardly mobile African Americans.

Oh, and black people in flashy Cadillacs have become a little too cliché, so many of them are opting for the less conspicuous, but still luxury Buicks.
