I tried to watch this show because I like symphonies and love DL fave Bernal. But I just don't get it? Anyone else?
Bump

LOVE. Mostly because Bernal is so damn adorable. It is basically a soap orchestra/opera. Good but not life altering.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 12, 2017 11:33 PM |
I tried getting into it but couldn't. I don't think Amazon makes great tv. They don't really do visuals or special effects or anything to create drama and tension, it's all just very grown up chatter, people talking, driving around, going from here to there.

My boyfriend keeps suggesting this one, but the promos leave me cold.
What are the pros and cons of this show? I fear I may end up watching it and need to know what awaits.
On the plus side, I have always found Gael Garcia Bernal adorable and somewhat sexy.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 13, 2017 3:46 PM |
Somewhat sexy? Gurl, you need a eyes exam. Have you seen The Crimes of Padre Amaro or Y to Mama tambien?
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 13, 2017 3:49 PM |
I just got a review from a big west-coast paper that compared our stage comportment to this show, I laughed and took it as a compliment of sorts.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 13, 2017 3:52 PM |
There's a lot of swearing peppered into the scripts to try to make it edgy. But it doesn't really seem authentic to me. It's also clear the writers know very little about a world class symphony or music in general. It's a workplace dramedy with some big names in the cast. I enjoy Gael and the lady playing Haley as well as Debra monk. The rest is kind of underwhelming.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 13, 2017 3:54 PM |
Bernal is disgusting
by Anonymous | reply 9 | January 13, 2017 4:37 PM |
r6, I am breaking protocol by responding to "gurl," but yes, I would qualify his sexiness as "somewhat."
He was at his hottest in Y tu mamá también (a film ostensibly about sex but really about intimacy) and probably at his most winning in The Science of Sleep, but I don't see him as a tremendously sexy middle-aged man.
So I need more than GGB to get through what appears to be a melodrama.

I don't get it either, I don't have Amazon.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | January 13, 2017 4:43 PM |
I'm in the classical music business professionally and I can't get through an episode because it's so preposterously dumb and misguided. I don't think they have a single person on staff who has a clue about classical music. It's just embarrrassing. I guess this is what doctors and lawyers must feel like when they watch shows based around their profession.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 13, 2017 5:06 PM |
Bernal looks mentally handicapped in the online promos, a huge turnoff.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 13, 2017 5:09 PM |
I love this show. It was loosely based on a book written about life as a professional musician. The episodes are short at just over 20 minutes each. It is about a New York symphony that involves all aspects--budgets, sucking up to donors, musician issues. In the 1st season Bernal was brought in as a young creative conductor to attract more audiences and donors. It gets a bit surreal in some episodes. The second season begins in Italy while the symphony is on strike. Monica Bellucci plays a Diva in several episodes.
I understand R12's point and don't usually watch law or medical dramas. But this is new ground for most viewers. I like the cast that includes Bernadette Peters, Malcolm McDowell, Saffron Burrows and some character actors. I try to ration my episodes but I find myself binge watching the whole season because the episodes are so short. It is a comedy/farce and a bit quirky but it hits my quirky sweet spot.

Bernal's attempts at miming conducting are... hilarious at best.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 13, 2017 5:27 PM |
Bernal sucks ass and is a communist supporting former soap opera turned pretentious actor twat.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 13, 2017 5:52 PM |
R14 look an Amazon worker assigned to spread good word of mouth of their shitty shows.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | January 13, 2017 5:53 PM |
R16 Since when is sucking ass a bad thing around here?
by Anonymous | reply 18 | January 14, 2017 12:48 AM |
The Japanese episodes were good this season but the rest have been awful. Haley looks to be a genuinely awful conductor so I don’t get why the show seems to present her as someone talented.
Bernal is adorable but the role has run its course.
At least the appearances of those two horribly cutesy old musicians were kept to a minimum this season.
by Anonymous | reply 19 | March 26, 2018 9:57 PM |
I thought the whole Venice/diva plot was great as well as her Amy Fisher aria. And the season before (Messiaen in prison) had great moments too.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | March 26, 2018 10:05 PM |
The returns diminished with each new season, and by the time Haley was making her really improbable ascent to the conductor's podium....well. There hasn't been any indication that the most recent season was the series finale, but they certainly wrapped it up that way, and I can't imagine where they would go from here. Bernal=delicious. Bernadette should slug the camera person; she looked positively decrepit.

Malcolm McDowell was unbearable this past season, his character was so fucking obnoxious.

DL fave Cole Escola prances around in Series 4 as Lola Kirke's roommate.
The show is just as silly and gimmicky as ever.

Saffron Burrows can't act. And don't start me on those cheeks...
Bernal was cute fifteen years ago.

Who’s the cute Aussie who played the other roommate?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | March 27, 2018 2:37 PM |
I just started watching yesterday. I'm four episodes in. They featured Mahler's 8th, a positive sign IYM. GGB is sexy, but he is so actory, it's like watching a cute, 28" waisted Vincent D'Onofrio.
by Anonymous | reply 26 | March 27, 2018 3:04 PM |
I must be in the minority that loves it. It’s is quirky and surreal, not to be taken seriously, but that’s the appeal. Plus beautiful music and of course Bernal.

[quote]Bernal sucks ass and is a communist
2 things I find incredibly desirable in a man.
I am certainly not in the classical music business, so I can't speak to that.
What I do like the most is the parties. I love how various people just pick up instruments they come across and begin making beautiful music.

Well, fuck the shit out of Jennifer Salke. Use Trump's dick.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | April 7, 2018 3:24 AM |
R34 That's a typical move for a new boss at a network. They want to mark their territory by putting fear into people and cancelling a bunch of shows.
R33 Y Tu Mama Tambien which is on Netflix. He and Diego Luna play friends who jerk off together then finally fuck.

I think it's a fantastic series, and I'm thoroughly bummed about cancellation. A stellar cast, focused on the arts and beauty, and really funny as well. What's not to like?

Not going to watch anything after new seasons of Bosch and Goliath. Then, cancellation of Prime. Fuck you in the ass, Salke.

Couldn't get through even one episode of the self conscious over-acting and Gael's ridiculously cringey ponytail.
by Anonymous | reply 42 | April 7, 2018 7:46 AM |
Any hope another streaming service will continue the series? Honestly, we get Roseanne and other boring reboots but lose this gem.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | April 7, 2018 8:34 AM |
I thought they tied up all the loose ends pretty neatly, and had been wondering where they'd go with another season. It was fun while it lasted, though....
by Anonymous | reply 44 | April 7, 2018 12:50 PM |
I doubt it will get picked up by another network. As much as I liked it I think the storylines went as far as they could. The season finale worked as a series finale for me.
Bernal’s character didn’t have a ponytail, just a really annoying hair extension at the back.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | April 7, 2018 12:51 PM |

r47 Very cringeworthy. Couldn't get past the second episode myself, despite the fact that Gael has the most perfect nose ever sculpted by the gods. I just can't with aspies and all that straight drama anymore.

So, in Mexico, the young conductor was having trouble with his hearing, and was diagnosed with a condition that prevented him from hearing accurate pitch.
How was that healed? Did it have to do with him thinking a curse had been placed on him?

Bernal = ugly annoying dwarf
by Anonymous | reply 50 | December 4, 2018 10:16 AM |
Well, they give his character more time that necessary.
I skip through his solo scenes, usually (the ones with Mozart, etc.).

Bernal had a nervous breakdown on the set of Bad Education caused by Almodovar's dictatorial style. But it's a fucking great movie.
