Rumble Fish (1983)
Am i among the few who found this film noticeably overrared?
Mickey Rourke's character was annoying, because it didn't ring true and the movie tried to make him seem as misunderstood genius and hero. His father played by Dennis Hopper says in one scene about his son :'He's merely miscast in a play. He was born in the wrong era, on the wrong side of the river... With the ability to be able to do anything that he wants to do and... findin' nothin' that he wants to do. I mean nothing.'
Lol. That's utter crap. People like him cannot do anything they want.
Another ridiculous line uttered by Hopper in the film about Rourke's character is this: ' Every now and then, a person comes along, has a different view of the world than does the usual person. It doesn't make them crazy. I mean... an acute perception, man... that doesn't, that doesn't make you crazy.'
Yeah, right, acute perception MY ASS.
Mickey Rourke is also way to overrated as an actor. He looks phony most of the time. Matt Dillon was very convincing in his role, though. He is a very good actor, not only cute and handsome. I also liked Dennis Hopper's performance, but his 'good lines' were not as meaningful as they were supposed to be. Far from it. If you wonder about Diane Lane, she was natural and convincing. Nicolas Cage's was just convincing...

Don't be hesitant, or lazy, kittens.
Did you like the film?

Diana Scarwid had a part in it. I think she might be pretty good.

I liked Stewart Copeland's sound track.

I don't remember anything about it. I saw it because Matt Dillon was in it.

Another "must-see" movie I've never seen...

Loved it and love the soundtrack. Excellent cinematography.

Stewart Copeland should have gotten two Oscar nominations that year, for Best Score and Best Song ("Don't Box Me In").

Nah. The soundtrack was equally overrated, imo.

I remember loving the fuck out of this movie when it first came out. Of course I was stoned out of my mind at the time, and when I was stoned I loved EVERYTHING I watched, whether it be an Oscar winning film or Three's Company on TV.

OP is an idiot. Go back to sixth grade, and take your asshole's "LOL" with you.
Even her comments on her typos had typos. Please. Leave.

Agree with r8. I remember being told I would like it, that I should like it.
But I didn't. Just like the movie.

is this the one with Ponyboy or the other one?

If you meant over-rated, it was a box office and critical flop. How is that over-rated?
Are you Vegas Maid trying to impersonate White Belt Man? This thread seems like the kind of try-hard failure she would commit.
"How come and you didn't nag about it?"
Needy.

Ponyboy was The Outsiders R13 so this was the other one. But I see what you are getting at.

I am watching this now. There are lots of extras on the Criterion DVD. Rumble Fish is a great art movie, a bit pretentious but not at all cynical, and its very open to all ages and tastes. It's also good looking!

It's corny and deep and funny - like Wedekind's parodies of the Bildungsroman, which served of course as inspiration.

Wasn’t this movie in black and white except for the Siamese fighting fish? If you’re going to make a movie in black and there’s no apparent reason, then that would seem pretentious.

I think I saw it at the movies, as the poster above said, mainly for Matt Dillon. (And for Stewart's soundtrack- I was in love with him). It was a snoozefest and I don't remember anything about it, other than that Diane Lane scene.

He was making a French New Wave film with a Weimar expressionistic style.

The style overdose is like Bram Stoker's Dracula, another movie I love despite how crappy it can be.

Diana Scarwid was everything!
GREAT FILM!

I just watched this tonight for the first time. It has a great cast and solid performances. It's not one of Coppola's better-known or most lauded films, so I don't know if I'd classify it as overrated. Matt Dillon is so hot in it, it's absurd. Watching him run round in tight jeans and a wifebeater throughout was almost too distracting.
