I do. "Can't Slow Down" from 1984.
Do you ever lie around and listen to Angela Bofill?

She was beautiful, dat Angela. Sexy, too.
I'm not much into this kind of music, though.

I do like Angela Bofill's music a lot. I'm listening to her now in my playlist.

I have several of her CDs. Fell in love with her in high school when Too Tough came out. As I got older, I came to appreciate her earlier jazz fusion stuff. Definitely one of the better voices from the 70s!

Well, I don't necessarily lie around and listen to her, but I do listen...
I Wanna Love Somebody, from 1993:

Here's another favorite, All She Wants Is Love:

Whoops, I meant r7. I'm r6.
Have another one - Gotta Make It Up To You, from 1983:

R9 that is one of my faves!!! Beautiful quiet storm ballad.

I also love this song. I had a mad crush on a boy in school and this song reminds me of him:

And of course the all-time Angela classic, I Try. Can't believe she was a teenager when she wrote it.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | January 6, 2017 12:14 PM |
r11, do you do drag?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | January 6, 2017 12:14 PM |
She suffered a major stroke, but bless her - she refuses to stop.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | January 6, 2017 1:23 PM |
I think she was a very naturally pretty lady. She had great composition skills as well.
She competed with Phyllis Hyman (a naturally beautiful lady, rest in peace ) but I don't know how serious that was. Phyllis Hyman even did Broadway.
One thing I know for sure is that the onset of Whitney Houston's career screwed things up for Angela and Phyllis.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | January 6, 2017 5:54 PM |
Could you expand on that, r16?
i think that a big factor for both Angela and Phyllis was that while both were highly regarded in the black/R&B world, neither ever crossed over into more mainstream success.

R17 I know in regards to Phyllis Hyman, in particular, she was signed with Arista in the early 80s and was set to be their darling black Barbie R&B who would crossover. But She and Clive Davis would knock heads, she wanted to take the reigns of what she recorded while Clive had other ideas for her to incorporate more "mainstream" material into her records. NO ONE tells Phyllis what to do and so I guess, that was that. Around this time, Clive discovered Whitney, a younger, more "manageable" (some would say manipulable) artist. Whitney's mainstream success gave Clive more influence at Arista and attention was transferred to Whitney while Phyllis was pushed aside.
In the end, Phyllis blamed Clive and Whitney for her failures but, in fact, she had herself to blame, in my humblest of opinions. She needed to sell those records and make ARISTA some money WHILE doing her thing. She could've compromised with Clive and added a couple mainstream pop stuff on her album to drive its sales while still having her material (which is overly dreary and melancholic after listening to it for an hour or so, if you ask me). I imagined Angela would fall into that same trap, although, I believe Angela had more hits than Phyllis but did not crossover far enough - she was still generally R&B and Jazz

I do occasionally lie around and listen to Angie. This is one of my favorites -"Tonight I Give In" - such a romantic lyric.

Check out her "Unsung" Documentary

I've Played Too Tough 5,000 times.

Love her. Hope she's happy and healthy, wherever she may be. Her and Phyllis deserved better. Pushed aside for Whitney, one killed herself, the other lost her ability to sing after two strokes. But Angela's a survivor...

I prefer her recordings from the 70s, made with real instruments.
I can't deal with the cheesy 80s synthesizers. Which is one reason I can't listen to early Madonna.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | February 20, 2018 2:05 AM |
cheese synths are in, fool. you old turd.

My parents used to play her records all the time. I forgot how much i loved this song until today. She did those high notes before Mariah.

No, no I don't.

Angela’s “I Try” is my favorite too
by Anonymous | reply 32 | May 3, 2018 1:57 AM |
Wow, haven't heard that name in years. This song puts a lump in my throat because my dad used to listen to this all the time during his "jazz nights". He loved her voice along with Phyllis Hyman and Randy Rnady Crawford.
Thanks for the memories, OP.

Old? I'm probably at least 30 years younger than you, crone.
Cheese [sic] synths are not in, you idiot. Retro is, but done with better technology.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | May 3, 2018 2:27 AM |
well, r37, i doubt you're 30 years younger than me. That would make you 10 years old. You're so bitter and shitty.

"Im On Your Side" is her best song, huuuuuge on NYC black radio when it came out, and still a quiet storm staple.
