Are there any good sex scenes or is it all just implied?
by Anonymous | reply 1 | January 6, 2017 12:37 AM |
Yes. I'll watch season 2, but it was not the best.
I would have liked to hear more about the war with the Dutch, and less about the building of Versailles.
by Anonymous | reply 2 | January 6, 2017 12:40 AM |
Their special effects are a bit spotty. Sometimes, the palace is without wings. Sometimes, it looks complete when they drive away from the front.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | January 6, 2017 12:46 AM |
I thought it was a shit mess except for the Gay brother. The Prince. But Athelstan was completely miscast as Louis 14th, and the writing and directing was positively crap. And they were all flouncing around tossing their long curly locks for effect. I can't believe there will be a season 2, but I suppose if there is I'll have to watch it.
Has anyone here ever see Farewell My Queen? It was about Marie Antoinette and the end, and it was extremely well done., as seen through the eyes of her maid servant. The last days of Versailles.Diane Kruger played Marie perfectly and Lea Seydoux was perfect as the servant.
by Anonymous | reply 4 | January 6, 2017 12:56 AM |
There's a scene of the brother on his knees blowing his lover. A couple of others too
by Anonymous | reply 5 | January 6, 2017 1:07 AM |
The story line is all over the place. I got lost several times throughout Season one . It often felt like a sitcom where episodes are independent of one another.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | January 6, 2017 1:26 AM |
The writing on these shows is all over the place. They are mostly awful to watch.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | January 6, 2017 1:29 AM |
I watched a few episodes hoping to get sucked in (at least by the King's brother), but haven't felt compelled to continue.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | January 6, 2017 2:38 AM |
Season 2 is pretty crappy. SPOILERS:
Everyone is poisoning everyone else; Louis is paranoid he'll be next; Philippe got married and had to imagine big hot soldiers in order to get it up to screw his wife; Chevaliar is now a drunk, weepy mess, pining after his estranged boyfriend. It's tedious now - those guys are always fighting/making up every 3-4 episodes.
by Anonymous | reply 9 | May 7, 2017 11:48 PM |
Fuck, no!
by Anonymous | reply 10 | May 7, 2017 11:50 PM |
If that's what you want you might watch "Borgia".
by Anonymous | reply 11 | May 7, 2017 11:57 PM |
I enjoyed the second season more than the first. Both seasons together play out as the rise and fall of Louis' mistress.
They killed off the GRRRL power doctor character--which I thought was a good solution to what was a problematic "modern" character. They gave her death weight in a way that would have realistically changed one of the continuing characters had she been a real historical figure. (Plus, that actress was kind of mediocre).

Compare the facial expressions on Philippe's face to the King's (aka Alexander Vlahos and George Blagden). LOL.
by Anonymous | reply 13 | August 4, 2017 3:10 PM |
Last thing I watched on Netflix was Castlevania...
by Anonymous | reply 14 | August 4, 2017 3:13 PM |
Terrible show, abominable acting.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | August 4, 2017 3:16 PM |
Love it - almost binged s1 and s2 - just started with s3 episode 1. Enjoyed Philippe-Monchevy love dynamics, Louis-Philippe brotherly love & rivalry. Alex Vlahos has most fascinating eyes and is a great actor - just like all others - great cast. Love the way they modernized it but still kept it in the period.
by Anonymous | reply 16 | May 20, 2018 7:16 AM |
Vlahos looks more gay in interviews, tweets etc. than his character -but much more so in recent ones. Not saying he is - as he was engaged to an actress-model for few years. You may say it was beard but I guess not nevessarily - since he was an unknown actor then and it is an American phenomenon anyway. I think he might be bi.
Williams seems an interesting guy on IG but I just took a brief look . On Blagden's also who retweeted funny bits from the set . The cast had a fun there, they enjoyed it and it shows in their chemistry. Sorry they they wrapped it up with s3.
Smart that although it is French canal+ and Canadian coproduction they chose English.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | May 20, 2018 7:42 AM |
Watched a few episodes. I fell in love with the guy who plays Louis XIV, but think he's miscast too . There's loads of nudity and sex scenes including male and gay. Not well written though. But the gay characters in it seems to have been in real life. So nice to know they were not just added in for shock schtick.
Glad as I was to see Louis XIV nude in the 1st episode of series 2. He still looked like he had been to the Versailles gym too many times to be believable.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | May 20, 2018 10:11 AM |
Evan Williams is a great guy, very smart and eloquent. Just look at Vlahos reaction on his "Love is love" speech, it looks as if he was almost on the verge of tears.
Strange that a great gay love story like MonChevy on a big show like Versailles goes almost unnoticed and underappreciated on DL.

I keep meaning to try it out but I just can't with the shit writing that r18 mentions. There's so much better TV out there these days.
by Anonymous | reply 20 | May 20, 2018 5:39 PM |
R20 How can you know it is shit writing if you did not watch the whole show yourself? I think the writing is very good, often great. I like that dialogues are modernized just as necessary to resonate with us but still take us to late XVII century. Of course, there are better and worse bits but that is so with all scripts especially for long-lasting shows with many characters and complicated plots. Still all characters are very well written and performed, most exceptionally well. The gay love story is an important and compelling part of the show for world wide audience. And people root for them because we all need the magic of a deep love like the one Monseigneur and Chevalier have for one another. Louis has sequence of mistresses but with none has he such a deep connection that these two have and that grows stronger during the course of seasons. It is both great writing and performance that can make this love look compelling, true and obvious even when the two fight terribly and in spite of everything that breaks them apart (war, duty, conspiracies).

A beautiful thank-you tweet from Evan Williams. So sweet "especially..." to his boy.

I just read and loved this interview about Versailles and much more - Evan Williams is real gem.

One of the top 10 worst shows I have ever seen.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | May 21, 2018 1:20 PM |
R24 bet you haven't watched all seasons. Anyway, why?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | May 21, 2018 4:49 PM |
Chevalier talks Philippe out of bitter self-isolation to return back to Versailles and take his place in that center of the world.
According to couple of youtube comments, this scene was cut from American TV!? And not this scene only but many others. I had no idea that there is censorship in the USA. Also read in an article that some (many?) MonChevy scenes were cut from Russian TV. That is sad but believable. But in the States!? Mon Dieu!
by Anonymous | reply 26 | May 21, 2018 10:36 PM |
Out of numerous MonChevy tributes from fandom on youtube, many bits in this mix from season 1 may well illustrate Chevy's TLC effect on Philippe: he cheers him up, takes him out of somber mood, encourages him to find his strength, to see the bright side. MonChevy fans prefer only their tender moments in these tributes, but don't think it's all milk and honey between them. They are both complex characters, beautifully played by these two amazing actors.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | May 23, 2018 9:31 PM |
Versailles cancelled. Producers say the audience got bored with the sex scenes overkill.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | May 23, 2018 10:10 PM |
It was not meant to go beyond 3 seasons. The last episode in season 3 is named "The legacy". And it was never meant to be an American soap opera that drags on. Versailles was an incredibly expensive project of highest quality. So it can only end at its peak.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | May 23, 2018 10:18 PM |
Only with Philippe here, in his repentant moment, there is no trace of Chevy's flamboyant and cocky attitude. He opens up to Philippe, his remorse and fears. And his voice goes deeper, speaks his truth as well. Btw, Evan Williams has IRL quite different voice, very seductive, deep and sexy. For Chevy he opted for a higher pitch.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | May 23, 2018 10:26 PM |
In season 2, Chevy's insecurity breaks out his mask into unnecessary jealousy to Philippe's new wife No2. So he takes revenge in losing a third of Philippe's annual income gambling overnight. A rare but hilarious fight.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | May 23, 2018 10:46 PM |
Chevalier despairs that he lost Philippe's love in spite of Princess Palatinate's gently reassurance. So simple and yet so complicated at a beginning of their very French ménage à trois.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | May 23, 2018 11:03 PM |
After all jealousy, insecurity and emotional pain in season 2, Chevy ends as a hero saving Philippe's life. I cannot find on youtube just the very last MonChevy "I will always love you" moment before Philippe goes to war. All I can find is this awful American-style butchery of the final episode but you can jump to 9:00.
So what next for these two in season 3? Philippe will return triumphant from the war and Chevalier can finally relax knowing that Philippe will always love him. Evan hinted something on 6:00 about Chevy's awakening in season 3.
by Anonymous | reply 33 | May 24, 2018 12:39 AM |
I find parts of it fun. Alex V is very good (great voice), but as many people said, the King is not that good and is boring. I guess I have to wait until Netflix has season 3 since it is very edited on American TV.
by Anonymous | reply 34 | May 24, 2018 12:57 AM |
So it is true that the show is edited on American TV. How dare they!? Don't watch it since it is not Versailles as the world knows it.
I liked Blagden as the King.. I admit that unlike for all others, it took me a bit to get used to him as the King, but now I couldn't imagine anyone else. He is mysterious and whimsical, does not give away much, self-centered of course, as he was brought up that way. Philippe is much better person as he was spared the same upbringing as Louis. The relationship between the brothers is complicated but they have strong bond based on love, no matter how different they are. I think the only mercy that Louis shows is when he pardons Chevalier because his death would devastate Philippe. Blagden has something mysterious in eyes and smile, a mild facade hinting whatnot behind.
The whole cast is unbelievable, so many great roles, both male and female (no wonder for a French show).
by Anonymous | reply 35 | May 24, 2018 1:26 AM |
Bits and pieces (some scenes are chopped severely) of Louis vs Philippe turbulent story from season 1. Philippe is much more likeable character (not just for being gay) and people take his side naturally. But Blagden did a very good job with Louis and is certainly not boring.
by Anonymous | reply 36 | May 24, 2018 3:59 AM |
Adding one of these very mishmash fan tributes to compelling Louis & Philippe relationship from season 1, just because they included few shots I like and the dialog is not completely covered with music.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | May 24, 2018 5:29 AM |
This one is better. Versailles has some skillful fans. There is much more tributes from/to Versailles family but I should really stop now.
by Anonymous | reply 38 | May 24, 2018 5:34 AM |
I managed to get through season 1 before quitting.
Telenovela writing and acting for days.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | May 24, 2018 5:55 AM |
Versailles has really talented fans. So I had to share this one as well. Hope you'd also like Versailles version of "Gay or European?".
by Anonymous | reply 40 | May 24, 2018 6:00 AM |
Just to clarify the point, Versailles is censored on Netflix ? or is it cut back on another outlet like Sundance? Is a non-rental complete version available for the US?
by Anonymous | reply 41 | May 24, 2018 7:50 AM |
I don't know for Netflix in the USA but I guess/hope not. I first saw few episodes from season 1 on my local cable, not censored of course as nothing is in Europe. I am shocked to learn they do it in the USA. My DVDs are bought in France, every FNAC store has it. DVDs have both original and French dubbed version. (I don't understand dubbing in some European countries. Not to hear the actual actors' voices is a huge loss and it is not the same show then.) I guess my DVDs are the same as on Amazon store where season 3 has been announced for mid August, probably after it completes emitting on BBC. And it has just been premiered there.

Happy Pride message from Versailles' Evan Williams IG. He is straight in RL btw. In an interview, he said that he loved and enjoyed playing a gay character and changed personally by the experience. Never heard any straight actor say anything similar before.
by Anonymous | reply 43 | June 9, 2018 6:40 AM |
Sweet that both straight actors so much loved and enjoyed playing their gay characters. Didn't know that there was this MonChevy sticker.
Can't wait to see season 3. From previews it seems that Philippe will be preoccupied with the man in the iron mask mystery. Still hope that Chevy won't be neglected.
by Anonymous | reply 44 | June 18, 2018 6:32 AM |
I wasn't crazy about Season 1 but stuck with it. Season 2 was a huge improvement and now I'm sorry to see it end. The actor who plays Louis is in the gender bending revival of Company singing Another Hundred People. He's a cutie out of his Louis drag.
