Millennial here and I just discovered kids in the hall on YouTube. Dave Foley and Scott Thompson were devastatingly handsome and we all know Scott is gay. Were any of the other cast members gay?
Any kids of the hall fans on here?
by Anonymous | reply 93 | March 18, 2020 11:41 AM |
I don't think any other members of Kids in the Hall are gay. I saw an interview or something where they were talking about how all the women always hit on Scott Thompson, even though he is gay, and all the men thought David Foley was gay (including me), and would hit on him all the time. If you haven't seen it, I would recommend checking out their movie Brain Candy, especially this part...

Bruce McDonald pinged the most to me, apart from Scott. But what do I know.
Was Gavin autistic? I wonder how some of these skits would play today.

You're doing a public service by reminding the DL about the brilliant KITH, OP. But now I'm about to ruin my budget for the month on the complete boxed set. :)

I used to know a KITH groupie who claimed Bruce was bi - at least when he was drunk. And yes, KITH groupies are a thing.

I always thought Mark was the most attractive. Ten year old me was secretly thrilled when he tipped Dave over to kiss him in a sketch on their first CBC special. Wore the VHS tape thin watching that bit over and over.

Mark is looking a bit....something these days.
Then again, I may just be annoyed by his Superstore character.

They were in my opinion. I love Dave's eyes and Scott had a very handsome face and nice body

I just saw a commercial for a show called "Nobodies" and almost fell off my chair when Bruce McCullouch popped onscreen. I've seen the other KITH members on TV in the last few years, but lost track of Bruce. Boy, it's weird seeing his younger self under the wrinkles - guess he'll always have that young/old face thing, like Michael J. Fox.

Looks like KITH is coming back for at least a short run.

I loved that show. I used to stay up late and watch it on HBO. My favorite was Bruce. Loved him. I about died when I saw him on Arrested Development. Always thought they would become bigger stars.

They failed at that task.

I was an extra in the Kids in the Hall movie - the opening scene at the concert. This was back in 1995.
I remember back in the early 2000s, I was working at a concert venue in Toronto and Dave Foley was picking up tickets... and my manager asked him for ID. I thought it was funny. I was like "That's Dave Foley!"

Chicken Lady is one of the weirdest, funniest skits of all time. Why are Canadians so much funnier than us Americans?

I know Dave Foley had a really ugly divorce years ago and couldn't pay child support. Feel bad for him. What a bitch ex-wife for expecting him to continue to pay as much as he was when he started to make less money.

Is she the one that had dated every other KITH but Scott?
by Anonymous | reply 61 | March 4, 2020 7:33 AM |
Kevin McDonald is extremely underrated, even in this thread. Without his nervy, crackling energy reacting to everything the other Kids throw out and boosting their characters many of the skits wouldn’t work.
He can sell pretty much any scenario or character and make it sympathetic; I remember thinking he played women better and more realistically than the other cast-members because he wasn’t going for drag and embodied the apathy of an average put-upon Frau wife or girlfriend.
One of my favorite characters of his was the earnest Depeche Mode fan who wants to “get into The Doors” with Bruce’s help. Everything from the way he is dressed to the way he speaks is a flawless interpretation of an insecure New Waver. “Steal a car-“ “I have a car-“ “STEAL A CAR” “Steal a car...”
by Anonymous | reply 63 | March 4, 2020 8:56 AM |
This talk given by Bruce is really good.
His speaking voice still sounds so bizarre, though.

by Anonymous | reply 65 | March 4, 2020 7:17 PM |
I found them unfunny with a dull Canadian wit. But I watched them as I found them cute to look at until I became a fan.
by Anonymous | reply 66 | March 4, 2020 7:17 PM |
Loved Mark McKinney in Superstore. He still had that aggravating (but appealing) natural voice, like his balls only dropped halfway. Dave Foley also had a good follow-up career. I thought they were all adorable and loved the fact they did the Monty Python-thing of playing women characters. Loved SCTV, too. Those Canadian troupes were way ahead of Americans - until SNL came along.

by Anonymous | reply 72 | March 5, 2020 1:43 AM |
R71 Of course, 100% of all men are gay. Cunt.
by Anonymous | reply 73 | March 5, 2020 6:08 AM |
R8, there’s also the Baroness Von Sketch Show. It probably wouldn’t appeal to a gay male audience, since it’s a female cast and female-centric humor. Quite a bit of lesbian content, which Americans are afraid to touch.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | March 5, 2020 8:35 AM |
I don’t know about gay, but it was known that as younger men Bruce & Dave had a tense dramatic love/hate working relationship where they often locked horns creatively. Sometimes that dynamic comes across as erotic when it’s anything but.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | March 5, 2020 10:16 AM |
I really liked the music played as their opening theme, the guitar piece.
by Anonymous | reply 76 | March 5, 2020 10:56 AM |
R63 He does my favorite bit. The King of Empty Promises.
I like KITH because it doesn't feel mass produced to appeal to the lower common denominator. It's just some guys having fun. America's answer to that was The Whitest Kids You Know which just was ridiculously absurdist humor and not as smart.
When KITH railed on the US, I used to have to turn it off. No one wants to be demoralized and shamed about how bad it is where they live. Years, later now I realize that was their catharsis for living in America's shadow and feeling bullied.
by Anonymous | reply 77 | March 5, 2020 11:35 AM |
All these years later, when I catch myself being overly fussy or anxious, I chide myself by repeating Fran's mantra when leaving the kitchen.
"The burners are off. Number one is off, number two is off, number three is off, number four is off. All the burners are off. Because number one is off, number two is off, number three is off, and number four is off."
I don't know why that cracks me up so much, but it does. So much of their comedy was like that; it caught you off-guard with its weird particularity.
by Anonymous | reply 78 | March 5, 2020 11:50 AM |
Everytime I watch Superstore, I hear Chicken Lady from Glenn.
So, this was a Lorne Michaels show. Bruce McCulloch wrote for SNL before KITH and Mark McKinney went on SNL after KITH. Mildly interesting.

My favorite was Girl Drink Drunk.
by Anonymous | reply 80 | March 5, 2020 12:41 PM |

Dave Foley is a balloon now.

My favorite skit. "I'm not gonna spread for no roses"!
by Anonymous | reply 84 | March 5, 2020 10:13 PM |
Thanks for the heads up SCOTT!
by Anonymous | reply 85 | March 6, 2020 5:49 AM |
It is amusing that Scott is the Out & proud gay man when he’s more butch (out of drag/Buddy) and straight-seeming than the others put together.
If I didn’t know of them, Mark is the one I would pick out first as the probable gay guy with Bruce as a questionable second. Kevin & Dave don’t ping much to me but they sure are the nerdiest femmey straights.
They’re all fantastic actors.
by Anonymous | reply 86 | March 6, 2020 7:19 AM |
R8 And while it's redneck humor, & geared toward a hetero audience, I've always liked "Red Green".

I feel like Dave & Bruce had that awkward sexual chemistry that straight Male friends sometimes accidentally develop much to their surprise.

I disagree R79. Bruce and Mark went to SNL via Lorne Michaels after the KITH series. I’ve read Bruces’ book, and Paul Meyers’ book on them.

I recently learned that Mark McKinney was one of the voice actors on the comedic dub of Dynaman. Anyone remember that? It used to be on late night cable tv. One of those so-stupid-it's-funny shows.
