Sexual reputation of being a ladies man? Check.
Republican? Check.
Never married? Check.
Lots of handsome male "friends?" Check.
He was quite a looker.

Swigert playing "dress up" with his male friends...
by Anonymous | reply 1 | December 26, 2016 11:19 PM |
Wow, he was a good looking guy. I had not paid attention to him before. Interesting that he didn't feel the need to get married, but was still elected to congress.

The local Colorado write up of his funeral.

Why are all astronauts republicans? I don't get it.

I'd have taken off on his rocket!

r7, John Glenn was a Democrat.
He even ran for President in 1984.
Obviously he didn't win.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | December 26, 2016 11:35 PM |
Swigert was a bit light in the loafers. And I'm not talking about outer space!

51? So young!

From the Beaver Colorado Times.
[quote] To loyal friends Jack Swigert is America. Indeed if Jack had married the girl next door he would have been the All American boy. He was a boy scout, held two paper routes, was a spelling ace, played youth football, had a matchbook collection and loved his grandmother's black walnut pound cake.
[quote] Today Swigert remains devoted to his mother, a bight active woman who lives alone in a southeast Denver condominium. Still a bachelor Jack does not rule out marriage, but says there is "no one special" now

That write-up at R14 is the TEMPLATE for Hollywood "bachelors" who are over 40 and still single.
Swigert had to have been gay.
by Anonymous | reply 18 | December 26, 2016 11:50 PM |
He only dated in space.

r21, something tells me that it wasn't a stretch for Jason Bateman to play gay in that clip...

He found his love on Uranus.

A gay face that can be seen from outer space.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | December 28, 2016 2:54 PM |
We had a thread on gay astronauts and someone posted that he had gone out with him.
by Anonymous | reply 29 | December 28, 2016 3:28 PM |
Interesting, OP.
My dad was career USAF and met Swigert once in Colorado. We watched Apollo 13 together and he made no comment either way on the way Swigert was portrayed as a dedicated womanizer, but to say if a guy really was that way, NASA would have wanted him to be a married man and at least give lip service to the notion of all American family manhood.
They touch on the subject of how the astronauts were held up to the public as these paragons of 50s virtue and their families were constantly in LIFE magazine (the movie The Right Stuff goes more in depth on it and what a media creation that image was) but in reality only Glenn really was that way. Al Shepherd, the first American in space, really was a man whore, and I think he stayed married to the same woman all hislife.
R15 touches on something that I've often thought, there's a certain type of gay stereotype that doesn't ping to straights, of the conservative, traditional often married closet case that is common with gay military men, and Swigert for that to a tee. They're the ones that straights get all huffy if you speculate on their sexuality but if you are one it's easy to spot another one.
by Anonymous | reply 30 | December 28, 2016 3:44 PM |
r14 the phrase "devoted to his mother" was basically a euphemism for homosexual back in the old days.
by Anonymous | reply 31 | December 28, 2016 4:15 PM |
Yeah but he wasn't "flamboyant," R31.

Diagnosed with cancer during his 1982 campaign and dead by the end of the year.
Could he have had AIDS?
by Anonymous | reply 33 | December 28, 2016 4:41 PM |
He had nasal cancer.
Van Allen Belts?
by Anonymous | reply 34 | December 28, 2016 4:45 PM |
He does have gayface. Never heard of that "Best Little Boy" syndrome, does shed light on a few things ~
by Anonymous | reply 35 | December 28, 2016 4:53 PM |
I know Jim Lovell and he told me that Swigert seldom put the make on his fellow astronauts. "We're all so busy in space and our suits are not designed for conjugal hookups" he swore. That's good enough for me. Did Swigert subconsciously have desires for the 'pink lizard,' who knows. Most men love their own equipment several times a day weather permitting, so having a little broader scope of desire wouldn't be much of a stretch.

R34 - Because no one ever lied about having AIDS
by Anonymous | reply 37 | December 28, 2016 5:14 PM |
Interesting article on Swigert from someone who knew him, setting straight the record on what seems to have been a fictionalized portrayal of him in Apollo 13. Lots of subtext to speculate on. If Swigert was gay as OP has made a pretty good case he was, he would have been extremely discreet about it.
Fur lounge chair, though. ....

R33 it may have been exposure to high levels of radiation in space. At that time we knew very little about what being in outer space does to the body.
by Anonymous | reply 40 | December 28, 2016 6:29 PM |
I also wondered if the quick cancer death was tied to AIDS but who knows
by Anonymous | reply 41 | December 28, 2016 6:44 PM |
[quote]At that time we knew very little about what being in outer space does to the body.
We still don't. Human beings have never traveled even 500 miles off the surface of the earth. Radiation makes it impossible. The Apollo Mission was staged to make Americans feel good about their country while we were fighting a heinous war in Vietnam. The Apollo Hoax was also a Cold War stunt and a multi-billion dollar boondoggle. The more you research the Apollo Mission, the more ridiculous it becomes. Mankind is earthbound.

Certainly a possibility. Most of the early 80s AIDS deaths were publicly attributed to cancer.

I think more of the women astronauts were gay, like Sally

Maybe because being an astronaut is discipline, self-sacrifice, and hard work; and mathematics doesn't lend itself to cultural relativism? Hardly everybody's cup of hot chocolate.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | January 1, 2018 2:17 AM |
R54, maybe you haven't heard of Democrat John Glenn. And since when are Republicans good at math, or anything that involves education? They think homosexuality can be cured through prayer.
by Anonymous | reply 55 | January 1, 2018 2:36 AM |
Why all the 'fuss' about his good looks? I must be missing something, don't think he's good looking at all. John Glenn certainly was!

R54, you can talk about the GOP being good with math, after, presumably, you've read about the new tax bill?
