Nino Castelnuovo

Just watched The Umbrellas of Cherbourg, and he was so beautiful. He and Catherine Deneuve rank alongside Montgomery Clift and Liz Taylor as most gorgeous screen couple.

Deneuve has the nose of a couchon and bland coloring. She was never the great beauty that Elizabeth Taylor was. (briefly)

[quote]Deneuve has the nose of a couchon

What the hell is a couchon?

by Anonymousreply 2December 4, 2016 5:18 AM

Deneuve was stunning and kept her looks for far longer.

by Anonymousreply 3December 4, 2016 5:20 AM

I remember jacking off to some pictures of a naked Nino in "Camille 2000" from one of those Playboy "Sex in the Cinema" articles.

by Anonymousreply 4December 4, 2016 5:21 AM

R1, I think you mean "cochon." "Couchon" is Picard spelling.

Nino in Umbrellas has been a huge crush of mine ever since I saw the film in its first big re-release years ago at Film Forum.

Do not, I repeat do not look up what he looks like today.

I understand he got a huge swelled head after the success of Umbrellas. Too bad because I would have loved to have seen him in Girls of Rochefort which he was supposed to do.

by Anonymousreply 7July 10, 2018 12:18 PM

Yes indeedy: I watched Umbrellas recently and was entranced.

by Anonymousreply 8July 10, 2018 12:36 PM

Nino was stunning in it. And in the story his character ended up happier than Deneuve’s.

by Anonymousreply 9July 10, 2018 12:40 PM

I know there are youngsters who've never this wonderful movie. Please, find a little time to fill this into your schedule. It's a sustaining work of art.

Nino was super hot when young. Too bad he never became a super star. I also think he was one of the many pretty boys who slept with Visconti (and maybe others) at the beginning of his career. Today he's disabled, blind and poor. His wife gave an interview a few months ago asking for help. Sad.

by Anonymousreply 11July 10, 2018 1:04 PM

I love Umbrellas but there are many who cannot abide it.

My parents saw it when it first came out and thought it was another French romantic movie. They were surprised it was a completely sung through musical and they said there were a lot of walk outs.

by Anonymousreply 12July 10, 2018 1:11 PM

fun fact: Umbrellas was barely released in Italy, and it was a huge flop. It did nothing for Nino's fame in his own country. I'm wondering if Nino slept with Demi as well. Demi was cute too.

by Anonymousreply 13July 10, 2018 1:22 PM

"Do not look up what he looks like today."

NOW he tells me!

by Anonymousreply 14July 10, 2018 1:23 PM

Demy died od AIDS.

by Anonymousreply 15July 10, 2018 1:24 PM

You should have told me you were going to do it 6 months ago. I would have prevented you at all costs.

by Anonymousreply 16July 10, 2018 1:28 PM

The ending at the Esso station is one of the saddest and most hopeful in a movie. Stunning.

by Anonymousreply 17July 10, 2018 1:33 PM

i always loved this pic form the shooting. They look so gorgeous and cool!

The very beautiful elegant Anne Vernon who plays Deneuve's mother in the film is still alive in her 90s.

by Anonymousreply 19July 10, 2018 1:40 PM

The film had a huge impact on those of us who were young in the mid-60s. And how has no one mentioned the importance of the gorgeous Legrand music? Makes me teary whenever I hear the soundtrack.

by Anonymousreply 20July 10, 2018 2:45 PM

^really? a HUGE impact?? Bitch please. And i love Demi!

by Anonymousreply 21July 10, 2018 2:46 PM

Nino taking a dive in 1982

For years he did commercials for Olio Cuore.

He was sort of the Florence Henderson of Italy.

A stunning movie. Never have Esso gas stations looked so glamorous.

by Anonymousreply 24July 10, 2018 3:20 PM

I don't know if Demy had a relative who worked at one but the memory of a gas station was a nostalgic one of his youth and he put it in the film.

Something about the smell of gasoline and eating a freshly baked croissant. Really.

by Anonymousreply 25July 10, 2018 3:26 PM

Demy's father owned a garage, R25

by Anonymousreply 26July 10, 2018 3:32 PM

Oh, well I guess that will do it.

by Anonymousreply 27July 10, 2018 3:36 PM

A couple of years ago, my partner and I went to see this movie at the TIFF Lightbox here in Toronto. My umpteenth time seeing it, he was an Umbrellas "virgin" (he loved it BTW.) Overheard from a conversation between two millennial girls while leaving the theatre: "Wow... I feel, from this point on, I should talk to people only by singing in French!"

by Anonymousreply 28July 10, 2018 3:37 PM

The man who dubbed his voice in the film looked more like Bob Hoskins than Nino Castelnuovo.

by Anonymousreply 29July 10, 2018 3:42 PM

R5 un couchon c'est un cochon qui couche, non?

by Anonymousreply 30July 10, 2018 3:44 PM

What does he look like now?

by Anonymousreply 31July 10, 2018 3:51 PM

He sure was hot in Camille 2000.

by Anonymousreply 32July 10, 2018 3:53 PM

R31 you don't want to know but I'm sure someone will post it. Avert your eyes.

by Anonymousreply 33July 10, 2018 3:54 PM

Umbrellas of Cherbourg was a wonderful movie. The story and the music. I didn't think I would like the movie dialogue being sung but it was not bothersome at all. "If it takes forever..."

by Anonymousreply 34July 10, 2018 3:59 PM

Nude.

R31's google is on strike.

Nino had a wonderful ass: he was a dancer in his youth.

by Anonymousreply 36July 10, 2018 4:44 PM

He's 81, r33 you asshole. What do YOU look like? When did you ever look as good as he did?

by Anonymousreply 37July 10, 2018 6:14 PM

he's also very ill, so excuse him if he doesn't look like a model

by Anonymousreply 38July 10, 2018 6:23 PM

Gotta laugh at the DL trolls like r33.

Does anyone remember the troll under the bridge in "The Three Billy Goats Gruff"? Ladies and ladies, I give you r33.

by Anonymousreply 39July 10, 2018 6:26 PM

This is how remember him. I’m much younger than the movie but from the first time I saw it and every time since then I always fall in love with his character and his looks.

There are a number of distinguished looking 81 year olds.

R33 and R39 need to stop hanging out with 12 year old boys.

by Anonymousreply 41July 10, 2018 7:28 PM

r41 should not be giving lessons in standards.

by Anonymousreply 42July 10, 2018 7:32 PM

r39 is defending Nino, r41, you idiot.

by Anonymousreply 43July 10, 2018 7:34 PM

He and Franco Nero were responsible for my lifelong attraction to Italian men.

by Anonymousreply 44July 10, 2018 9:32 PM

I like UMBRELLAS but it's such a rip...uh, 'hommage' of Pagnol's FANNY/MARIUS/CESAR Trilogy in its melodramatic plot elements.

by Anonymousreply 45July 10, 2018 9:50 PM

R30, Formidiable!

And I'm guessing that Pagnol took the stories from somewhere else. It was hardly original with him.

R50 It's the moustache.

Nino romantic and sexy on TV singing live. Very Italian.

He's petite and lithe. Cute then handsome but really its a dime a dozen gorgeousness in many latin countries.

by Anonymousreply 55July 11, 2018 8:58 AM

R55 True. He looked like a handsome Italian waiter.

by Anonymousreply 56July 11, 2018 11:37 AM

by Anonymousreply 57July 12, 2018 3:26 AM

So gorgeous.

by Anonymousreply 58May 26, 2019 6:29 PM

Umbrellas is a classic. The Legrand score is one of the best of all time.

He was gorgeous.
