Tyrone Power
I saw NIGHTMARE ALLEY yesterday. Such a great film. Directed by Edmund Goulding, who was a gay, of course. I've been reading Jeanine Basinger's "The Star Machine" (which has a picture of a young and gorgeous Tyrone on the cover) and she quotes a book that claims the film is the quintessential example of a b movie ruined by a movie production values. Wrong! I've never seen any of Tyrone's 1930s films and so I plan to go through them as soon as poss.
Looking at his wiki page, I was surprised to find absolutely no mention of his bisexuality. Surely it's a foregone conclusion at this point? I checked the discussion page and it seems it's been brought up several times, but it's quickly been nixed by some tedious hall monitor on there as being without foundation. He even uses the basically homophobic old canard about gay men wanting everyone who is good looking to be gay. Below is a passage from a post on Tyrone at the Gay Influence blog:
[quote]Reports of same sex relations continued. British comedian and actor Bob Monkhouse related in his 1994 autobiography [italic]Crying with Laughter[/italic] that he had rejected sexual advances from Power. The fashion critic Mr. Blackwell had romantic moments in Power’s dressing room, as detailed in his 1995 autobiography [italic]From Rags to Bitches[/italic]. In his book, [italic]Errol Flynn: The Untold Story[/italic], author Charles Higham reports that Power had a sexual relationship with Errol Flynn. According to William J. Mann, in his book [italic]Behind the Screen: How Gays and Lesbians Shaped Hollywood, 1910-1969[/italic], Power was involved in numerous same sex relationships. In his book, [italic]The Evening Crowd at Kirmser's: A Gay Life in the 1940s[/italic], Ricardo J. Brown confirms that Tyrone Power and Tallulah Bankhead were among thespians and movie stars who were bisexual. In [italic]Oops, I Lost My Sense of Humor[/italic], Lois M. Santalo writes that "many stars of the silver screen, dating back to Tyrone Power," had been gay or bisexual. In Robert Aldrich and Garry Wotherspoon's (both of Sydney University) [italic]Who's Who in Contemporary Gay and Lesbian History: From World War II to the Present Day[/italic], Power is listed among the "Top box office stars who were gay or bisexual". Your blogger has recently expanded this list of references for all those comments left by those who say I have no evidence, that I'm just repeating rumor. Read this post carefully -- I'm not saying Power was gay; I'm saying he was bisexual, engaging in sexual relations with both men and women.
Didn't Truman Capote also quote Marilyn Monroe as saying Tyrone was bisexual? I think that's also dismissed as *yet another* pathetic gay man fantasizing about Tyrone Power, who was ALL MAN!, etc etc....

Don't do this shit to us again, dude. You caused a hell of a ruckus trying to manipulate DLers into being your personal army over the Gary Cooper shit.
Enough already. Go to Wikipedia and edit yourself using a blog for a source. Leave us out of it.

That wasn't me, buttercup. I was merely interested in having a discussion here about Tyrone in general and, yes, how there is still resistance to the idea of him being bisexual. I couldn't care less about wikipedia, as it's the go-to source for morons, isn't it? I was just using it as an example of the aforementioned resistance. So, no need to panic x

Someone in an old Tyrone Power thread on here said that his great gay love affair was with a technician at Fox and it lasted decades. Does anyone know who that might be?

I remember reading a long time ago about his relationship with the very beautiful and gay Robin Thomas, John Barrymoree's step-son, a few years before he went to Hollywood.

I'm about to watch THE RAINS CAME (1939). It has an amazing credit sequence, where the words on each title card are caught by the rain and suddenly run down the screen. I would love to know how they did that. I just watched Tired Old Queen at the Movies video on the film (love him!):

He was dating the cherubic-faced Sonja Henie, the love of Liberace's life, for a while. But apparently they were actually into each other and were fucking around the 20th Century Fox studio lot like rabbits.

I always thought Tyrone Power was the most beautiful man who ever lived. I love Dana Andrews too. Look at the both of them, is that chemistry or what ???

In the late 1960's, my grandmother looked at me and said "Tyrone Power was such a pretty man, and you're going to be just like him when you grow up." And then she winked and smiled. I think I was about 7.

wow never heard of him being bi. Romina Power, his daughter; is a very famous Italian personality/singer who married one of the most famous singers from the 60's Albano Carrisi. Since I was a kid she was referred to as Tyrone Power's daughter, and in the past 30 years in Italian media, despite the huge buzz this family generated for decades nobody, even the most famous gay outlets; mentioned about him being bisexual. Romina has sued any publication that referred to his father being gay (bisexuality in Italy is still a metaphysical concept).
OT but his grand-daughter Ylenia went missing in the 90's in New Orleans, it's still one of the most famous unsolved mysteries in Italian crime.

Ylenia's story might be the one thing that saves this doomed thread.

I remember watching "Cocoon" with my mother years ago, and when she saw Tyrone Power Jr., she said, "That HAS to be Tyrone Power's son. He's as gorgeous as his father!" She loved Tyrone Power.

I would love to know who that technician at Fox was. Or see a picture at least. His relationship with Cesar Romero seems to have been quite serious, too.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | February 25, 2018 1:20 PM

You could say that. Romero did the eulogy at the funeral. It was full of ' I love you beautiful man '. It seems Ty was so fucking gorgeous no one cared who he was fucking He didn't even bother to hide. I am half italiano. Romina is a enormous star in Italy and Europe. Was. But the italians are such Homophobic cunts, of course they would never aknowledge Ty's bisexuality. Strange for an entire nation of closeted queens.

Power's looks are enormously overrated. He was good looking but in no way in the league of Rock Hudson..Cary Grant...Tab Hunter...Guy Madison. ..Joel Mcrea etc

Tyrone Power is about 100 times hotter than Hudson, Hunter, Madison, these guys are beefecake pin-ups, zero class. R32. Zero class.

We used to have a wonderful poster here on DL called Susie Lee who had all kinds of gossip about Tyrone Power and his family. She grew up in Hollywood, the daughter of character actor and MGM contract player Kurt Kasznar.
I miss her and her informed posts.

I guess the technician would be Ty's best friend, Watty Webb. I've never heard if they were lovers or not.
There's no doubt that Ty was bi, but we need to stop crediting such disreputable sources as Mr Blackwell and Charles Higham when talking about the history of gay Hollywood.

I never got his appeal. Was pretty good in Nightmare Alley, but too pretty for me, and aged badly. Always felt he was "acting," unlike Dana Andrews or Richard Widmark, also at Fox.

Power was at his best and handsomest in his youngest years playing opposite Alice Faye in Fox musicals. His prettiness and lack of depth was well-employed there.
He's also watchable as Jesse James in the 1937 film of the same name. Seeing him in early hyper-real Technicolor opposite the equally gorgeous young Henry Fonda is a sight to behold.

Tyrone looked his best as the Swedish count in Marie Antoinette opposite Norma Shearer. The 18th century costumes with the lace and bows really suited him.
BTW, Tyrone is an Irish name, from an ancient Gaelic kingdom. It became popular among American blacks in the mid-20th century because of Power's handsome "dark" looks.

R43, I think you're right about MA. That was made at MGM, not his home studio, and so different techs. I think Shearer was infatuated with him and had just been widowed. Rooney claimed that he had a fling with NS during the filming.

It always seemed very odd to me that MGM borrowed Power for that role in Marie Antoinette when they had Bob Taylor right there on the lot.

Shearer had the hots for him and demanded him.

R45, good point. Possibly there was an MGM player "exchanged" to Fox, for Power. I guess everyone here knows that Olivia dH was responsible for a big change in Hollywood contracts, after filing a suit against Warners. Studios could no longer add on to 7 year contracts the number of months that an actor had gone on suspension, rather than take a part s/he deemed inferior. I think the court actually termed that as "peonage," thus illegal.
by Anonymous | reply 47 | February 26, 2018 9:18 PM

Marie Antoinette was produced in 1938, 2 years after Taylor successfully played Armand to Garbo's Margeurite Gautier in Camille.
Olivia's case against the studios was won in the early 1940s. Bette Davis tried the same thing in the late 1930s, even deserted Warners and Hollywood for a film in London, but was unsuccessful and forced contractually to come home. Jack Warner gave her Jezebel as a consolation prize.

As badly as Tyrone Power may have aged, he looked a hell of lot better than Robert Taylor when they both hit middle age in the 1950s.
I guess the only one of those male superstars of the 1930s who aged handsomely and elegantly was Cary Grant. And Cesar Romero if you're into that type (which I am!!).

You will never find gay or bisexual stuff on Wikipedia about any stars of the golden era (except for some severely qualified stuff about Cary Grant) for the simple reason such pages are patrolled by a pack of old homophobic geezers who immediately revert any insinuation, despite the fact movie luvvies are still luvvies who would whore themselves for a single closeup.
Power used to hang round with Big Girl’s Blouse Cesar Romero. There’s an old actress on YouTube who talked about them. If you hung with Romero you took the cock.
