Pretty unrealistic if you ask me.
Why Did Rhoda's Mom Live In The Bronx In The 70s
by Anonymous | reply 76 | December 2, 2020 12:49 AM |
Do you actually know anything about The Bronx? Have you ever been there?
by Anonymous | reply 2 | September 25, 2016 9:46 PM |
The Bronx is probably bigger than where OP lives.
by Anonymous | reply 3 | September 25, 2016 9:49 PM |
Ida Morgenstern developed an insatiable taste for BBC.
And she knew where to find it.
by Anonymous | reply 5 | September 25, 2016 9:53 PM |
Even though most of the Italians moved away years ago, Arthur Ave. is still Little Italy.
by Anonymous | reply 6 | September 25, 2016 9:56 PM |
So is South Bronx poor and North Bronx wealthier? Because North Bronx is getting near Westchester co., which I've heard is pretty wealthy.
by Anonymous | reply 7 | September 25, 2016 10:20 PM |
Yes r7. Parts of the Bronx are nice, Riverdale, Woodlawn, Throgs Neck, City Island.
by Anonymous | reply 8 | September 25, 2016 10:24 PM |
Because all the white people hadn't left yet OP
She was, IIRC, supposed to have lived in an area called The Grand Concourse which had been a middle class to upper middle class Jewish neighborhood in its day and had not totally deteriorated by the time Rhoda was shot. As in young families were not moving in but older couples were not moving out.
And as R8 mentions, Riverdale in particular is quite posh, with most homes in the Fieldston section going for well over $1M

"Just repeat to yourself, 'It's just a show, I should really just relax.'"
by Anonymous | reply 10 | September 25, 2016 10:35 PM |
Ida Morgenstern is one of my favorite fictional characters ever.
by Anonymous | reply 11 | September 26, 2016 1:10 AM |
where did Brenda and Rhoda live?
Their neighborhood must be pretty bad. Carlton is always dealing with criminals and such.
by Anonymous | reply 12 | September 26, 2016 1:18 AM |
Didn't the Costanzas live there in the '90s? Or were they in Queens?
by Anonymous | reply 13 | September 26, 2016 1:30 AM |
they were in Yonkers r13.
by Anonymous | reply 14 | September 26, 2016 1:38 AM |
Ida's not the only one who craved BBC.
by Anonymous | reply 15 | September 26, 2016 1:41 AM |
Why was Jo living in the Bronx in the 80s and it was OK?
by Anonymous | reply 16 | September 26, 2016 1:43 AM |
Not all of riverdale is posh and it certainly wasn't in the 70s. Plenty of Jews lived there, and still do.
by Anonymous | reply 17 | September 26, 2016 1:47 AM |
[bold]The Bronx is making a comeback![/bold]
"The poorest borough in New York is shaking off the embers of the 1970s, when arson was so rife that "The Bronx is burning" became a catch phrase. The South Bronx has been rebranded as "SoBro," featuring sushi bars, lofts and boutique hotels attracting European tourists."
"... [C]rime has plummeted, with only 95 homicides last year compared with 653 in 1990. More than 16,000 housing units are under construction, half of them subsidized. Mayor Bill de Blasio plans to create a 73-block swath of housing, shops, offices and schools along a stretch of Jerome Avenue served by the subway, a project that could change the way New Yorkers view the Bronx."
Move on up, Dataloungers, and enjoy what the Bronx has to offer!
by Anonymous | reply 18 | September 26, 2016 1:58 AM |
R9 The Grand Concourse was very upscale for decades, esp the area around Fordham Rd (near Fordham Univ).
When they built Co-Op City, further east in the Bronx, many of the GCs older Jews moved there. The GC then turned slummy & crime ridden.
Unfortunately, Co Op City is now a vertical slum. Its basically a housing project.
R8 Add Country Club, Morris Park, Edgewater & Pelham Bay to that list. For the most part, anyway
Fieldston has homes far in excess of $1M. Some above $3M
by Anonymous | reply 19 | September 26, 2016 2:12 AM |
Rhoda was shot?
by Anonymous | reply 20 | September 26, 2016 2:17 AM |
R20 I think the brain cancer killed her first.
by Anonymous | reply 21 | September 26, 2016 2:22 AM |
I believe Rhoada and Brenda lived at 332 West 64th Street. Not really sure if that's Hell's Kitchen or Upper West Side, but I don't think that area was good in the 1970s from what I've heard. (I was still in diapers during Rhoda and 150 miles away from that neighborhood.)
by Anonymous | reply 22 | September 26, 2016 2:37 AM |
[quote]but I don't think that area was good in the 1970s from what I've heard.
It had to better than living under the East River.
by Anonymous | reply 23 | September 26, 2016 5:16 AM |
Maybe she lived in the Villa Charlotte Brontë, a fabulous address then and now.
by Anonymous | reply 24 | September 26, 2016 7:06 AM |
Where are your from, Rhoda?
Guess.
Brooklyn?
Why does Manhattan never occur to anyone?
by Anonymous | reply 25 | September 26, 2016 7:15 AM |
R13 the Bunkers lived in Astoria Queens
by Anonymous | reply 26 | September 26, 2016 7:37 AM |
Sorry R13 the Cortanzas lived in Queens. Not sure what neighborhood.
by Anonymous | reply 27 | September 26, 2016 7:39 AM |
I don't think so r27. When that Janis girl from Friends played Elaine's friend and Elaine tried to fix him up with George, George was living at home with his parents in Yonkers.
by Anonymous | reply 28 | September 26, 2016 7:43 AM |
I met her once - very down-to-earth. Absolutely not pretentions or interested in show biz - but very proud of her daughter of course ...
by Anonymous | reply 29 | September 26, 2016 8:01 AM |
Who r29?
by Anonymous | reply 30 | September 26, 2016 8:06 AM |
R28 I just Googled it and it said that they lived in Kew Gardens Queens
by Anonymous | reply 31 | September 26, 2016 8:12 AM |
r31 oh well I googled it and it said they lived in Flushing.
I'm guessing that the references in the earlier episodes don't match up hence the Yonkers episode. Plus Yonkers was a funny word for the Janis from Friends actress to say.
Sort of like how Rhoda had a sister Debbie in the early MTM shows.
by Anonymous | reply 32 | September 26, 2016 8:16 AM |
r30 - pay attention ..
by Anonymous | reply 33 | September 26, 2016 8:20 AM |
No, r33: you're wrong, and he's right.
You could mean Nancy Walker or Valerie Harper.
Take responsibility for your posting--don't be a little cunt.

r34 = twit
by Anonymous | reply 35 | September 26, 2016 9:26 AM |
r34 - don't be jealous - it's not becoming
by Anonymous | reply 36 | September 26, 2016 9:31 AM |
Hey OP, it was a TV show. These people aren't real. It was Nancy Walker who lived in Hollywood.
by Anonymous | reply 37 | September 26, 2016 9:32 AM |
r37 - thanks a lot for that - and thanking you in advance for any other really great posts !!
by Anonymous | reply 38 | September 26, 2016 9:40 AM |
What happened to Rhoda's brother Arnold? He was mentioned a few times.
by Anonymous | reply 39 | September 28, 2016 3:39 AM |
he went gay
by Anonymous | reply 40 | September 28, 2016 4:01 AM |
R39 Or her sister, Debbie, who actually appeared on MTM.

Another question - how did Mary afford all those designer clothes on her $75 per week Associate Producer salary?
Did she shoplift?
Escort on her time off from WJM?
by Anonymous | reply 43 | October 11, 2016 3:52 AM |
And where was Rhoda's bathroom in that one-room purple studio with the mannequin and the love beads in the doorway?
Her "apartment" was the size of a closet - no wonder she was always down at Mary's spacious apartment with the lovely views.
Even pushy Phyllis couldn't have gotten away with renting that dump as an apartment.

The Upper West Side begins at 59th Street, so that's where Rhoda and Brenda lived. The zip code was 10023. I lived on the 300 block of W. 75th beginning in 1975, right near Riverside Drive. In those days, Riverside started at 72nd Street. Now there's this Riverside Blvd thing in the W. 60s, but it wasn't there then. Anyway, I loved the neighborhood. Great shopping, even better sex opportunities.
by Anonymous | reply 45 | October 11, 2016 4:04 AM |
And I'm almost certain the Costanzas lived in Queens.
When did George and Jerry start hanging out together? Were they both from Queens?
by Anonymous | reply 46 | October 11, 2016 4:05 AM |

Rhoda was shot??!

Well what do you expect when someone is running around NYC in wedding dress and on the subway in it.
I guess we should be thankful she wasn't in her blue jeans
by Anonymous | reply 50 | October 23, 2016 7:19 PM |
r46
Yes they did, except for one episode, so they could have a joke about Yonkers

According to Ted, her clothes were all reversible.
by Anonymous | reply 52 | October 23, 2016 7:20 PM |
I think one-ep Debbie was morphed into the more interesting and funny Brenda. Unless there was ever any mention of her having two sisters. I didn't know about a brother. Brenda as the Rhoda before picture made sense for the show, so they forgot about other siblings.
by Anonymous | reply 53 | October 23, 2016 7:29 PM |
Rhoda's husband was one hunk.
by Anonymous | reply 54 | October 23, 2016 7:37 PM |
Marrying a hunk should've been saved for the final episode. That was her happy ending, and there was nowhere (funny) to go from there.

Despite playing two of the most identifiably Jewish characters on TV, neither Valerie Harper nor Nancy Walker was Jewish.

Rhoda mentioned him a few times and so did Ida. He went to live with Chuck Cunningham.
by Anonymous | reply 59 | October 25, 2016 3:18 AM |
Both George and Elaine had siblings you never really heard about other than in passing
by Anonymous | reply 60 | October 25, 2016 3:19 AM |
That's shameful that they would deny work to Jewish actors. They couldn't get a break!
by Anonymous | reply 61 | October 25, 2016 4:07 AM |
I bet Rhoda and her mom would be Trump supporters
by Anonymous | reply 62 | November 8, 2016 3:16 AM |
Where did Ann Marie live?
by Anonymous | reply 63 | November 8, 2016 3:51 AM |
r62
I bet they're celebrating tonight
by Anonymous | reply 64 | November 10, 2016 5:59 PM |
Ann Marie lived in Manhattan. In Ann's time an apartment like hers, 1 bedroom, decent size, nice building and neighborhood could be had for about $125.00 a month. What couldn't be had was her huge wardrobe. Especially since her paychecks were sporadic.
In 1970 I had a friend who got a nice 1 bedroom half a block from CPW in the low 70s for $145.00. It was a walk-up but he only lived on the second floor. I had another who had a 1 bedroom also close to CPW and paid $115. It was a walk-up and after first having to walk up a huge flight of steps just to get into the building you had to climb up 5 more flights to get to his apartment. Even the young and healthy pretty much needed oxygen by the time they got up there. Needless to say most of us stopped visiting him after a while.

Sounds like "Barefoot in the Park."

Was Rhoda a gang banger? Is that why she wore a bandana?
by Anonymous | reply 68 | April 12, 2020 11:35 PM |
R11 too bad Angela Petrillo is one of my least favorite characters ever.
by Anonymous | reply 69 | April 12, 2020 11:53 PM |
There's no such person, R69.
by Anonymous | reply 70 | April 12, 2020 11:55 PM |
Even in the 90s, there were still sizable Jewish communities near Montefiore. If the Morgensterns lived in Riverdale, we would have been told they lived in Riverdale, which is pretty separate from the rest of the Bronx. More likely the far North Bronx--near Montefiore or in Co-op City.
by Anonymous | reply 71 | April 13, 2020 12:07 AM |
Bronx was a hole in the 70s.
by Anonymous | reply 74 | December 1, 2020 10:47 PM |
R73 or R74, why did you bump both Rhoda's Mom threads at the same time? In one thread you bumped it by saying it was a duplicate thread. You knew it was a duplicate because you bumped them both.
by Anonymous | reply 75 | December 1, 2020 10:57 PM |
It’s so weird to me that people would think the Bronx, either today or back in the 1970s, would be all one thing. All poor or all rich, all ghetto or all suburban. The Bronx, if it were an independent city, would be the 6th or 7th largest by population in the US. That means the Bronx has a larger population than all of these cities: San Francisco, Austin, Charlotte, San Diego, Dallas, Indianapolis, Fort Worth, and San José. But no one would ever question why a given tv character would be living in any of those cities based on income or economic class. Of course they wouldn’t, because cities that large are pretty damn diverse. It’s as if some people on here learned all they know about the Bronx from watching the movie Fort Apache.
